If you need to write down information quickly, it is important that you make your notes as brief as possible. You can: use abbreviations and contractions; Abbreviations: “IT” for information technology; “Dr” for doctor; “ICU” for Intensive Care Unit; Contraction: “it’s” for it is; “haven’t” for have not; “doesn’t” for does not; Abbreviations ad = advertisement bio = biology cf. = compare Co. = company edu = education esp. = especially etc. = and so on e.g. = for example i.e. = that is info = information intro = introduction wk = week ICU= Intensive Care Unit max = maximum min = minimum para. = paragraph Dr = doctor St = street Rd = road vs = versus/against hr = hour IT = information technology write down only the keywords; use symbols. Symbol can be a number, a letter or a sign used to represent something. For example, the sign “O2” can stand for the oxygen; “$” stands for the dollar. Keyword is a word that tells you about the main idea or subject of something, like the word that you type into a search engine so that it will search for information related to the word on the Internet. & =and @ = at + = plus > = greater than < = smaller than ↗ = increase ↘ = decrease → = lead to/result in ← = result from ( ) = between, among $ = dollar £= pound ♂= male ♀= female × = multiply, multiplied (by) ÷ = divide, divided (by) O = oxygen Let's summarize what to do by writing down the key words. One word for the task: Two words for the festival: Three words for each of the events: Three words for one of the events: festival theme; events lecture, workshop, fair lecture: lecturer, time, place workshop: experiment, equipment, fair: material suggestion, activity, decoration PART THREE Reading and thinking 12 Theme Events Space Dr Li gave a lecture about whether life can exist on other planets. Students tried different experiments in the Science Workshop. The most popular experiment was “Planets in a bottle”. At the Science Fair, every class decorated their classroom and designed activities according to the theme of space. One class decorated their classroom as a space station and another class designed a “Big Bang” activity. Science Festival goes off with a bang! Read and fill in the table Bang! go off with a bang show off creative talent outer space with great interest get a taste of ... the standout activity a real team effort Key Expressions 突然炸裂 展现创造天赋 外太空 非常感兴趣地 尝试一下 突出的活动 团队合作的成果 PART FOUR Critical thinking 15 China launched its Chang’e-6 lunar probe. China’s space science and technology has entered a world-leading era with breakthroughs in lunar exploration, deep space missions, space science satellites, reusable rockets, and cislunar infrastructure—all achieved through independent innovation. China’s science and technology have developed rapidly in recent years. Can you share some tech news with the whole class? Free talk Lunar Exploration: World-First Milestones Chang’e-6 (June 2024) World’s first lunar far-side sample return: Returned 1,935.3 grams of lunar regolith from the South Pole–Aitken Basin. Key scientific findings: Basalt dated to 2.823 billion years ago, supporting the lunar magma ocean hypothesis. Lunar mantle in the landing zone is ultra-reduced and cooler than the near side. First detection of hematite and maghemite in lunar soil, rewriting lunar water and oxidation theories. Samples shared with global scientists for collaborative research. Are you interested in science and technology? What aspects in particular? Science & Technology Space Biotechnology & medicine Agriculture Renewable sources AI Material physics computer science I focus especially on artificial intelligence, computer science, and information technology—like how large language models work, machine learning, algorithm design, and data processing. knowledgeable inspiring famous successful humorous innovative professional insightful patient interesting popular trendy appealing engaging entertaining stimulating If you are going to invite a person to give a lecture, what kind of person is he or she? What is a good topic of the lecture? lecturer topic Lecturer and topic Discussion Which theme do you choose? And why? Theme: Materials physics Materials physics is closely related to our daily life. Think about smartphone touchscreens and the fibre optics used in telecommunications. In fact, we use these every day, and they were made real thanks to breakthroughs in materials physics. Theme An example Every class will prepare a display on the new materials students have created. Every class will decorate their classroom with their new materials. Science Fair and decorations What kind of Science Fair activities and decorations would you suggest? An example PART FIVE Writing 22 Write a plan for the school Science Festival. D A plan is a detailed proposal for doing something. It can offer the reader a better understanding of a certain project or activity. Events: 1. A lecture by Professor Wang On Monday morning, Professor Wang will give a lecture about chemically strengthened glass, which is used as a cover for many portable devices. The lecture will be held in the school hall. Sample 2. Science Workshop There will be a Science Workshop on Tuesday. Students can try to make their own materials in our laboratories. We will provide many raw materials and lots of different equipment. Students will be able to find out what new materials they can make and what features their materials will have. 3. Science Fair The Science Fair will be on Wednesday. Every class will prepare a display on the new materials students have created. Students should think of how their new materials can be used and how they can change people’s lives. This event will encourage them to be bold and creative. Homework Polish your report after class (less than 150 words). Give at least three reasons. In 17th-century Europe, it was unheard for women to travel alone. She was on a bold mission to be the first person to travel abroad to study and paint insects directly from nature. Merian’s pictures were very beautiful and provided a lot of information about unusual insects. Reading Read the magazine article about the great naturalist and painter Maria Sibylla Merian and answer the question below. A: It’s obvious that Merian was very brave. She travelled across the world to study unusual insects. B: I agree. Back then, it was very dangerous and difficult to travel abroad, but she still did it. She must have been a calm and confident person. A: That’s right. And her drawings are so beautiful! She was clearly a very talented woman. B: Yes, and she definitely knew what she was doing. She also had a clear goal in life—she worked really hard on learning how to draw living insects. This was something that nobody else had done before. A: Yes. It’s a very interesting topic. I think one of her talents was being able to see the beauty in everyday life. B: Good point. I also think she must have been very patient. Imagine how difficult it is to find those strange insects in the world. And then painted them! A2 Speaking Maria Sibylla Merian made great contributions to both the study of insects and the art of painting. In pairs, discuss what qualities she had and how those qualities led to her success. Write an article about the scientist’s personal life, research area and achievement. She was born in Warsaw in 1867. she moved to Paris to continue her studies and there she met Pierre Curie, her husband. She did most of her scientific work in France. She died in 1934. Together with Pierre, she made several important scientific discoveries: she discovered radium and polonium, and she developed the theory of radioactivity. They were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903. After her husband’s death in 1906, she continued their work and discovered that radium could be used to treat illness. I think that is her greatest contribution to science. In 1911, Marie received her second Nobel Prize—this time in chemistry. To this day, no one else has received two Nobel Prizes in different sciences. Marie Curie also did a lot for other people. She helped injured soldiers during the First World War. She also founded the Curie Institutes in Paris and in Warsaw, which are still major centres of medical research today. The reason I admire Marie Curie is that she showed the world that women can make important contributions to science. I hope that one day I can become a scientist like her. 103995.805 93153.93 98378.93 $
