A
Over the centuries, we have discovered more about our world, and think that everything that could be discovered already has been. But the truth is that the world holds many more secrets waiting to be revealed. Here are four places that have yet to be opened up completely.
The Mariana Trench
The deepest and darkest place in the ocean is the 11,000-meter-deep Mariana Trench. Due to cold temperatures and huge water pressure, the deep ocean is totally unfriendly to humans. Although technological advances have led to the discovery of many new varieties of deep-sea animals on the ocean floor, there is a lot more to be learned.
The Amazon rainforest
The Amazon rainforest is said to make up around 50% of all of the rainforests in the world. Interest in its climate and resources has resulted in certain explorations. However, due to the extreme difficulty in getting to and entering the region, full exploration of it has been almost impossible. Up to now, 2.5 million insect species and 400,000 plant species have been officially documented.
Greenland
About 81% of Greenland is covered in ice, so it is almost completely unpopulated. Greenland has only been explored to a limited extent, as the climate is quite unsuitable for human life. Although research explorations are currently being carried out, the most interesting research in Greenland might tell us more about the past than the present.
Deserts
It is almost impossible to survive long periods of time in the desert. Thus, desert explorations have frequently had terrible results — many people are known to have died on such explorations. It is unclear whether anything of particular interest would be uncovered by further research into deserts, although there are animal and plant species there which are special.
21.Why is the Amazon rainforest not fully explored?
A.Unclear research results.
B.Difficulty in reaching the region.
C.The unwelcoming environments.
D.Lack of interest in its climate and resources.
22.Which of the four locations may provide more information of the past?
A.The Mariana Trench. B.The Amazon rainforest.
C.Deserts. D.Greenland.
23.Where is the text probably taken from?
A.A news report. B.A club poster.
C.A book review. D.A science magazine.

The Eaton Fire was one of the wildfires causing destruction in Los Angeles County, in California. Avery Colvert, 14, created Altadena Girls, a recovery fund for teens affected by the fire. Avery never thought the fund would spread rapidly online. But less than 24 hours after its creation, it did just that. Celebrities (名人) started posting about Altadena Girls on social media. The donations started coming in by the truckload. “Oh, my God.” Avery told TIME in an email on January 11. “It’s crazy here.”
Avery’s family home survived the Eaton Fire, but most of her friends lost everything. “There’s maybe a small handful of people I know whose houses are spared,” she said, during a FaceTime call.
Many of Avery’s friends had to evacuate (撤离) in the middle of the night with only the clothes on their backs: pajamas. “I imagine my own bedroom, and I am thinking about how my clothes, makeup, and shoe — everything is my identity and it’s my sense of self,” she said. “It’s the same thing for all of my friends.”
Avery knew her friends would be given necessities, such as food and water. She decided to collect and hand out items that would help girls “get their confidence back.” On January 10, Avery and her stepdad designed a logo and started an Instagram account. The next day, Avery posted about the project. The page took off. Trucks loaded with donations arrived at the place where Avery and her family were staying until air quality improved. Volunteers showed up, ready to work. By the end of the day, several clothing brands had reached out to help.
“When I had this idea, I couldn’t even think about how big this would be,” Avery said. “While I’m taking donations, organizing items, my phone is just completely blowing up.” Truly, this young person’s kind heart sparked a powerful wave of help for those in need.

26.Which of the following can best describe Avery?
A.Caring and thoughtful. B.Honest and responsible.

27.What can we learn from Avery’s story?

It was 3:30 in the morning. I was holding my baby, scrolling through eBay and feeling groggy(昏昏沉沉的). I had a brief out-of-body experience, seeing myself as an outsider. There was my baby, gazing up at me, and there was me, looking down at my phone. I was horrified. It was then that I decided to “break up” with my phone and set better boundaries.
Our most time-sucking apps are designed to grab our attention because that’s how their creators make money. These apps are part of the “attention economy”, where our attention and data are sold. We are not the customers of these apps; advertisers are. We are the product, tricked into giving our most valuable asset(资产)—our attention—away for free.
We only experience what we pay attention to; we only remember what we pay attention to. Sure, there are many reasons to pay attention to our phones. But like time, our attention is limited: Every minute spent scrolling is a minute not spent on something else.
App makers use psychological tricks from gambling. These tricks control the release of dopamine(多巴胺), a chemical that motivates us to repeat behaviors. This system doesn’t distinguish between good and bad behaviors—it just encourages repetition. Phones and apps are packed with dopamine triggers. Bright colors, novelty, unpredictability, and rewards like social approval are all dopamine triggers. This is why social media, news, email, games and shopping apps are so addictive.
If we don’t recognize what is happening and fight back, we risk becoming like lab rats trained to press a lever(控制杆) for food. One of the first steps I took was to minimize my exposure to dopamine triggers by turning off most notifications(通知), hiding or deleting my most time-sucking apps, and turning my phone’s screen to black and white. I also banned my phone from my bedroom and the dining table and charged it in a closet at night.
My relationship with my phone still isn’t perfect—no relationship ever is. But it has improved in ways I never would have anticipated.
28.Why did the author decide to “break up” with her phone?
A.She needed more sleep.
B.She found apps too boring.
C.She wanted to reduce her spending on eBay.
D.She realized her attention was being guided unfairly.
29.Who are the real customers of apps in the “attention economy” according to the author?
A.Phone users. B.Advertisers.
C.App creators. D.Data analysts.
30.How do app makers make their apps addictive?
A.By limiting user choices.
B.By targeting dopamine triggers.
C.By providing useful content.
D.By offering various rewards.
31.What does the author want to convey in this article?
A.Breaking up with your phone is easy.
B.Phones are designed to be addictive.
C.Don’t let your phone steal your attention.
D.More time should be devoted to family.

What is art? Cave paintings are often called the first art ever made. However, it’s possible the people who created the paintings thought of them as mysterious and powerful, quite different from art as we think of it today.
In 13th-and 14th-century Europe, people usually thought of artists like workers or craftspeople because they used their hands to make things. It wasn’t until the 15th and 16th centuries, known as the Renaissance in Europe, that artists began to see themselves as creators, not just craftsmen. A big change happened in 1436 when a man named Leon Battista Alberti wrote a famous book called On Painting, which claimed that art was just as important as poetry and science. People started to think more about artists as special individuals.
Art began to be divided into two groups. The first was called the “fine arts”, which included painting, sculpture and drawing. These were seen as more important because they expressed big ideas and emotions. The second group was called the “decorative arts”, like glass-making, wood-carving and book decorations. These were thought to be less important because they were more about looking nice or being useful.
In the late 19th century, people started to like the decorative arts more, because artists wanted to focus on handmade things instead of factory-made items. But painting was still seen as an important kind of art. Then, in 1914, a French artist named Marcel Duchamp changed how people thought about art.
He started using everyday objects and turning them into art just by choosing them and signing them. His most famous art was called Fountain—it was actually a type of toilet that he signed with a fake name, “R. Mutt”, and tried to put in an art show in New York in 1917. Duchamp said that picking an ordinary object and calling it art was enough to make it art, because the artist made the choice. Duchamp helped change art by showing that it isn’t just about painting or making statues—it’s also about ideas.
32.What was the significance of On Painting?
A.It gave painting a new direction. B.It introduced a new form of poetry.
C.It enhanced the status of artists. D.It made Battista Alberti well-known.
33.What happened in the late 19th century?
A.The value of fine arts declined.
B.The enthusiasm for painting faded.
C.Factory-made items had no market.
D.Decorative arts became fashionable.
34.Why was Fountain considered an art piece according to Duchamp?
A.It was pretty and useful. B.It was a handmade object.
C.It had an artistic appearance. D.It was chosen by the artist.
35.What is the text centered on?
A.The thinking about art. B.The classification of artworks.
C.The impact of masterpieces. D.The source of artist’s inspiration.
As university doors opened in September for a new year, an estimated six million people across the world took to the streets in a historic week of climate action. The power of this youth-led campaign reflected the urgency for action on the environment. So what now? 36 Here are some ideas about how you can be sustainable as a student.
What you put on your plate matters: nearly a quarter of all greenhouse gases come from agriculture, and most of those are from meat and dairy. Meat and dairy consumption results in excessive (过度的) land use, industrial emissions, methane, water use and deforestation. 37 A meat-free diet has been recommended as the single-biggest way an individual can reduce their effect on the planet.
Forget fast fashion: keeping your clothes for as long as possible has much more than just monetary value. In the UK, clothing has the fourth-largest environmental effect after housing, transport and food. 38
For some freshers, this will be your first time living alone, which means doing your own washing, cooking and cleaning. 39 Wash your clothes at a lower temperature, and choose a bamboo toothbrush or more eco-friendly sanitary (卫生的) products. When shopping, see if there's a zero-waste shop nearby, where all products are free from plastic packaging. Just turn up with your own container. If you're planning a weekend away with new friends, try to travel by train or bus.
40 But campaigning is important too. University campuses can be the perfect place for this. If you don't know where and how to start, see if there are any societies at your university like Student Climate Network. Students using fossil fuels in 76 universities have now committed to it.
A.So recycle your clothes or mend them.
B.Meat consumption delays industrial development.
C.And clothing has a bigger impact on environment than food.
D.Cutting out meat is an easy way to reduce your carbon footprint.
E.There are simple ways you can change your habits to live more sustainably.
F.Individual actions matter, as they provide an alternative to how we can live.
G.For freshers starting a new chapter at university, deciding how to live your life is vital.

Brian was a funny student who loved watching comedies best and hoped to become a comedy actor one day. He often made his classmates laugh with jokes during breaks, and even his teachers would laugh at his funny remarks in class.
When Brian heard about the school’s upcoming talent show, he immediately decided to participate — though he’d never acted on stage before, the thought of sharing laughter with the whole school filled him with excitement. However, some classmates doubted in public. “You? On stage? You’re not funny.” Ken, a boy, said to him. “No one will like your terrible performance. You will embarrass yourself.” another classmate shouted, making Brian’s cheeks burn with embarrassment.
Confused by their words. Brian seriously considered giving up. But then, he recalled how his close friends had always begged him to tell more jokes during lunch breaks, and his drama teacher had once praised his natural sense of humor. He decided to ignore the doubters and focus on preparing the best performance he could. He spent every evening practicing his lines, practicing his gestures, and even asking his little sister to be his audience.
On the day of the show, Brian stepped onto the stage with a deep breath. His performance — filled with funny stories about school life and exaggerated (夸张的) expressions — had the audience laughing loudly. When the results were announced, he won first prize! His friends cheered loudly, and his teachers patted him proudly on the back. Even so, Ken told Brian that he was not funny at all, and that he would not be successful. Brian didn’t understand why Ken said so, but he realized that it had nothing to do with himself. He confidently continued to work toward his goal.

W: Recycling is good for the environment. It can also benefit a community in surprising ways.Mateo Lange, 15,knows this well. On weekends, you'll find him sorting through glass and plastic bottles in his hometown of Indian River, Michigan, where he leads a community recycling program.
Mateo started the program in 2020. He was 11 and in the sixth grade, playing baseball with the Northern Michigan Cyclones. The team was new and needed money to travel to competitions. Mateo got a plan.
"There were always cans and bottles on the road," he told TIME for Kids. In Michigan, these can be collected and “become” cash. With his father's help, Mateo started a bottle and can drive. It raised $7,500.“We built up so much money in just a few weeks," he said. “So I said,'Why don't we keep this going as long as we can?'” Since then, his recycling effort has raised $350,000 and helped at least 50 local youth groups.
In 2023,Mateo was awarded a Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes. The award honors kids and teens who are working to help others and protect the planet. Mateo believes everyone can-and should-be of service."Just do a little bit to help make the world a better place," he said.“Be creative, have an idea and build on it.”

根据第一段“It was 3:30 in the morning. I was holding my baby, scrolling through eBay and feeling groggy. I had a brief out-of-body experience, seeing myself as an outsider. There was my baby, gazing up at me, and there was me, looking down at my phone. I was horrified. It was then that I decided to “break up” with my phone and set better boundaries.( 当时是凌晨三点三十分。我抱着我的宝宝,一边浏览着易贝网站,一边感到昏昏欲睡。我有过一次短暂的“灵魂出窍”的体验,感觉自己仿佛置身事外。画面中是我的宝宝,正抬头望着我,而我则低头看着手机。我感到非常震惊。就在那时,我决定“与手机断绝关系”,并设定更好的界限。)”以及第二段中“Our most time-sucking apps are designed to grab our attention because that’s how their creators make money.( 那些最耗费我们时间的应用程序之所以设计得能吸引我们的注意力,是因为这是其开发者赚钱的方式。)”

This is why social media, news, email, games and shopping apps are so addictive.( 手机和应用程序中充斥着能刺激多巴胺分泌的元素。
根据文章大意以及第五段中“If we don’t recognize what is happening and fight back, we risk becoming like lab rats trained to press a lever(控制杆) for food.( 如果我们不意识到正在发生的事情并加以抵制,我们就有可能变得像那些被训练去按控制杆获取食物的实验鼠一样。)”

通读全文,尤其是第二段“In 13th-and 14th-century Europe, people usually thought of artists like workers or craftspeople because they used their hands to make things. It wasn’t until the 15th and 16th centuries, known as the Renaissance in Europe, that artists began to see themselves as creators, not just craftsmen.(在 13 世纪和 14 世纪的欧洲,人们通常认为艺术家就像工人或工匠那样,因为他们是通过双手来制作物品的。直到 15 世纪和 16 世纪(即欧洲的文艺复兴时期),艺术家们才开始将自己视为创造者,而不仅仅是工匠。)”,第三段“Art began to be divided into two groups.(艺术开始被分为两个类别。)”和倒数第二段“In the late 19th century, people started to like the decorative arts more, because artists wanted to focus on handmade things instead of factory-made items.(在 19 世纪末期,人们开始更青睐装饰艺术,因为艺术家们希望将精力集中在手工制品上,而非工厂生产的物品上。)” 故选A。

The experience in the talent show became a turning point for Brian. Instead of letting Ken’s words discourage him, he used them as fuel to work even harder. He joined the school drama club, where he started performing in short plays. His popularity grew, and soon he was invited to perform at local youth events. Whenever he felt nervous before a performance, he would recall the laughter from that talent show and the pride of winning first prize. Brian always made sure to prepare diligently, and with each performance, he gained more confidence and improved his skills.
Years later, Brian’s efforts paid off. He became a well-known comedy actor. One day, he happened to meet Ken, who was now working as an event organizer. Ken finally admitted, “I was wrong back then. I wanted to be on stage too, but I was afraid of failing. I was just jealous.” Brian smiled and replied, “Thank you. Your criticism actually helped me grow stronger.” He realized that staying true to oneself and working hard is the real key to success.
