(2025·湖北实验高级中学期中)I look forward to my half hour train ride to work every morning.I can look out of the window as it twists and turns itself through neighborhoods with the sun casting its strong lighting on the floor of the train car.I sometimes get lost in thought while following the light. But the reason I love this ride is that it’s a reminder of how neighborhoods can change from block to block.
For almost a year now I have been riding this train as I head into the office where I work as a reporter for a local magazine.I am one of 13 journalists who help report community news in areas that are often forgotten. And for me, that means covering areas like the one I grew up in.
Last week, as I was on the way to my office, I started wondering how neighborhoods have changed since the 2008 housing crisis.I searched addresses on the city’s southwest side, a neighborhood that has seen a significant number of residential homes pulled down.I scanned the street views recorded on my phone and saw how the neighborhood looked in 2007.Then I set out to visit the city block, and that’s when I met 3-year-old Harmony.
Harmony loved collecting rocks for me to hold as I walked down the street with her mother, Marquita.I already knew what the neighborhood looked like in the past, but Marquita shared more details of the people who once lived on her block, who were really friendly to each other. However, people today in the neighborhood are busy with life and seldom say hello to each other.Marquita has lived on this block her entire life, and Harmony has for most of her short life as well. But the neighborhood that Marquita grew up in will be one obviously different than the one Harmony will grow to know.
In the end, they smiled at my camera. And then I got back on the train and headed back to the office to tell their stories.

Susan had worked for the same company for a long time. She was smart, worked hard and was good at mentoring (指导) others to help them develop their skills and careers. Then, she was unexpectedly restructured into a different job.Susan reached out to me a few weeks into her new role as she wrestled with the change. She was worried that she wasn’t learning the new skills needed fast enough and that she was letting her team down, to the point where she feared her role could be at risk.
Given Susan’s fears, we decided we needed to start big and tackle her fear head-on with new exposure opportunities. So we set Susan a huge challenge to deliberately (故意地) step out of her comfort zone and embrace a beginner’s mindset. This meant finding new hobbies outside of work that she wasn’t confident she would be able to master and stick with.
Susan took up sewing. She was a novice (新手) and had to watch plenty of videos online to figure out how to do anything.Taking on a beginner’s mindset helped her to enjoy what it feels like to learn, rather than fall into frustration (受挫).She also practised how it feels to accept mistakes. It hasn’t been a smooth path — Susan recalled with humour the times that she wanted to throw a tantrum as it all felt too hard.To her credit though, she continues to sew.
My next experiment was to see how she might take this mindset into her new role. For this, I coached Susan to let her colleagues know she was feeling anxious about her performance and ask for feedback.Collecting quality feedback from her colleagues helped Susan to take baby steps and progress, while easing her fears of losing her job any time soon.
At our last conversation, Susan described herself as a beginner’s mind “novice”; learning still isn’t comfortable for her but it is helping her understand that she can take a different approach. Most importantly, she’s more open than ever towards trying new things.
5.What happened to Susan when she contacted the author?( )
A.She entered a new company.
B.She worked hard to adapt to her new job.
C.There was a tension between her and her team.
D.There would be a structural change in her company.

C.Introduce her to new things. D.Improve her work efficiency.
7.What does the underlined part “throw a tantrum” in paragraph 3 most probably mean?( )
A.Work out details. B.Ask for feedback.
C.Raise questions. D.Get angry.
8.Which of the following was Susan’s change after the author’s “next experiment”?( )
A.She became faster at learning new skills.
B.She became less worried about losing her job.
C.She became more unwilling to take on challenges.
D.She became skilled at practising her beginner’s mind.

(2025·湖南师大附中期中)Today’s journalists face modern challenges.Online media platforms are springing up.And the lowly newspaper and its reporters are fighting money, tech, and distrust issues.Journalism students and teachers must emphasize new skills to keep their profession alive.
A trustworthy press helps inform people and monitor all levels of government. That is essential to a nation.Yet this useful establishment is growing increasingly unpopular.According to the University of North Carolina (UNC), newsroom jobs across the country are fewer than half what they were 10 years ago.And on many college campuses, the news about the news is bleak too.
Take the Syracuse, New York, student-run newspaper The Daily Orange: It isn’t daily anymore. The paper prints just three times each week.Next year, The Diamondback of the University of Maryland will be online only.Half the newspapers that still exist on paper say they don’t print as many copies. And UNC’s The Daily Tar Heel has cut staff pay and rented cheaper offices to make its budget.
Considering the problems in journalism, it’s surprising that the enrollment (注册人数) in college journalism programs is up.The Daily Orange managing editor Catherine Leffert calls the layoffs and cutbacks disheartening.“But what keeps me wanting to be a journalist is seeing the effect that The Daily Orange has,” she says.
But journalism educators wonder, “Are we preparing young people for a dying industry?” Years ago, journalism graduates took low-level reporter jobs at newspapers or television stations. That still happens. But today’s jobs more often involve digital editing, social media production, and video streaming. Some universities are taking action. The University of Florida offers a sports media program.Several schools highlight statistics-driven data journalism.
The news isn’t all bad.Journalism professor Kathleen Culver says, “When I look at 18-and 20-year-olds in journalism and see what they want to do, I’m optimistic.” Maddy Arrowood is the student editor of The Daily Tar Heel. She says her experience makes her more interested in a journalism career, not less. Her optimism “comes from knowing that people still need news. They still need information.”
9.What mainly contributes to the challenges for today’s journalists?( )
A.More printed newspapers are in great need.
B.The newsroom jobs are decreasing worldwide.
C.Online newspapers take the place of printed ones.
D.Online media platforms are developing quickly.
10.What does the underlined word “bleak” in paragraph 2 mean?( )
A.Depressing. B.Interesting.
C.Useless. D.Encouraging.
11.How do some universities respond to today’s journalism?( )
A.They reduce student enrollment.
B.They offer students specialized programs.
C.They prepare students for low-level reporter jobs.
D.They encourage students to run their own newspaper.
12.Why is Maddy Arrowood mentioned in the last paragraph?( )
A.To show people’s positive attitudes to journalists.
B.To prove the potential of a career in journalism.
C.To show the popularity of The Daily Tar Heel.
D.To prove people’s thirst for the latest news.
