Are you a curious person?
If you often want to learn more about something, then you probably are. But as American researcher Perry Zurn points out, not all curious minds are cut from the same cloth. There are at least three styles of curiosity (好奇心): “busybodies”, “hunters” and “dancers”.
“Busybodies” like to collect lots of information on all kinds of topics. They’re not looking for any certain goal. Rather, they’re just interested in the world around them. “Hunters,” by contrast, go after detailed answers. They follow a clear path to reach their goals. “Dancers” jump at new ideas or mix old ones in new ways. They prefer to take the road less traveled.
Zurn and his team went on to see how these curiosity styles play in real life. They focused on readers of the online encyclopedia Wikipedia (维基百科). Their research included 482, 000 people from 50 countries. For each person, the team looked at how many different topics he or she read about and how closely those topics were connected.
The results showed that all three types of curious minds are among today’s internet users. “Busybodies” read widely, but they especially liked sports, food and the arts. “Hunters” cared more about science and technology. Interestingly, they were more likely to feel stressed than the other two types after their curious hunt. That’s probably because they had a stronger drive to fill in the blanks in their knowledge.
Zurn says we are each born with a natural curiosity style. However, our style isn’t set in stone. We can develop the other two styles by spending time with teachers or friends who think differently. That’s good news. After all, curiosity works best when all three styles are in one mind.

A. The topics that people read about.
B. The large number of Wikipedia users.
C. The time that people spend online.

In the eyes of many foreigners, Chinese are the best hosts (主人) and the worst guests in the world. And Western hosts sometimes look impolite in the eyes of Chinese guests. It is because the guest-host relationship in China is quite different from that in some Western countries.
In China, guests are almost like gods. Whenever I enter a Chinese friend’s home, there is always fruit on the table for me, and someone is quick to bring me a cup of tea or water. In the West, generally the guest is not a god. Acting according to the host’s way of doing things is a usual behavior for a guest.
My wife’s mother, a very kind Chinese lady, doesn’t smoke. When I see some of her guests smoking in her house, as a non-smoker, I feel unhappy. Usually, I want to stop them directly, but I realize that in China, to be a good host, she must not let me do that.
In most North American homes, if you are a guest, and the hosts are not smokers, you should not smoke in their house. At least, you should ask, “Is it OK if I smoke?” But don’t be astonished if they say, “No, you can’t smoke.” In my culture, if you smoke in their house, you are a bad guest, but if they don’t allow you to smoke in their house, they are not impolite hosts.
In a word, no matter where you are, the best way to be a good guest is to adapt to (适应) the habits of your hosts.
11. How do Chinese hosts usually treat their guests?
A. They ask guests to follow their house rules.
B. They prepare fruit and drinks for guests.
C. They let guests help with housework.
D. They refuse guests’ requests directly.
12. What will the writer probably say if a guest wants to smoke in his house?
A. Let’s smoke together.
B. Sorry, you can’t smoke here.
C. Smoking is a bad habit.
D. It’s OK if you smoke here.
13. What does the underlined word “astonished” mean in Paragraph 4?
A. Popular. B. Important. C. Surprised. D. Happy.
14. Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?
A. When a guest smokes, the writer’s wife feels unhappy.
B. The hosts are impolite if they don’t allow people to smoke in their house.
C. All over the world, guests are just like gods to the hosts.
D. Guests should act according to the host’s way of doing things in the West.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Best Hosts and the Best Guests
B. Smoking Habits in China and America
C. The Secret to Being a Perfect Host
D. Different Guest-Host Relationships in Different Cultures
【答案】11. B 12. B 13. C 14. D 15. D
【解析】

【11题详解】
第二段指出:“there is always fruit on the table for me, and someone is quick to bring me a cup of tea or water. ”,这直接说明中国主人通常会客人准备水果和饮品。
【12题详解】
第四段“In most North American homes, if you are a guest, and the hosts are not smokers, you should not smoke in their house.…if you smoke in their house, you are a bad guest, but if they don’t allow you to smoke in their house, they are not impolite hosts.”
第二段指出:“In the West, generally the guest is not a god. Acting according to the host’s way of doing things is a usual behavior for a guest.”,在西方,按照主人的方式行事是客人的常规做法。

In the Western Han Dynasty, there was a boy called Kuang Heng. He was born in a poor family and couldn’t go to school. Luckily, one of his relatives taught him to read and he became very interested in reading.
At that time, books were expensive. Kuang Heng couldn’t afford books, so he decided to borrow some. He worked for a rich man without getting paid. The rich man asked, “Why don’t you want the money?” Kuang Heng said, “I like reading. You only need to lend me some books.” The rich man was surprised at his diligence (勤奋) and agreed to lend him books.
In the daytime, Kuang Heng had to work, so he could only read in the night. However, he was too poor to buy even a candle. How could he read in the dark night? He found that his neighbor lit (点燃) candles in the house, and he had a good idea. He dug a small hole on the wall so that he could use the light to read books.

A. Let’s smoke together.
B. Sorry, you can’t smoke here.
C. Smoking is a bad habit.
D. It’s OK if you smoke here.
13 What does the underlined word “astonished” mean in Paragraph 4?
A. Popular. B. Important. C. Surprised. D. Happy.
