Every Sunday, I hear the same sound from the kitchen: thump, thump, thump. It is my grandma. She is cutting vegetables to make soup. She always makes the same soup. I thought it was just her habit.
Last Sunday, I watched her more carefully. She never reads a book to cook. She opened a small box and looked inside. I saw many old photos and a little notebook. The notebook had old writing. One line said, “More ginger (姜) for cold days.” Another said, “He loves this.”
“That is your grandpa’s writing,” Grandma said softly. She smiled. “He liked to help me remember.” I understood then. This was not just soup.
The next Sunday, I went into the kitchen. “Can I help, grandma?” I asked.
She looked happy. She gave me a carrot and a knife. My thump was slow at first. But Grandma showed me how. We worked together. The kitchen smelled of vegetables and something warm and good.
Now, the thump, thump, thump has two sounds. Mine is still a little slow, but it is there. We don’t talk much. Sometimes, she tells me a little story about the old photos. In modern China, people celebrate January 1st as “Yuan Dan”. The name has a special meaning. “Yuan” means “the start”, and “Dan” means “morning”. The Chinese character “Dan” looks like the sun coming up above the line where the earth meets the sky. So, “Yuan Dan” can be described as “the first sunrise of the year”.
But long ago, this name did not mean January 1st. For thousands of years, it meant the first day of the Lunar New Year. The exact day often changed when a new emperor (皇帝) ruled. For example, the Xia, Shang, and Zhou dynasties (朝代) each started their new year in a different month. It was not until the Han Dynasty that the day was set as the beginning of spring in the lunar calendar.
Today’s meaning came about in the 20th century. In 1912, China began using the Western solar calendar (Gregorian calendar) to be like the rest of the world. Later, in 1949, the government made the two holidays different: January 1st became “Yuan Dan,” and the traditional lunar new year was called “Spring Festival”.
It is interesting that the date January 1st comes from ancient Rome. In 46 B.C., Julius Caesar chose this day to honor Janus. Janus had two faces—one looking back at the past and one looking forward to the future, making this date a perfect symbol for the start of a new year. Today, China’s Yuan Dan blends this worldwide tradition with its own rich culture, looking forward with hope just as the sun rises on a new morning.
13. Which picture best shows the meaning of the Chinese character “Dan”?
A. B. C. D.
14. What did “Yuan Dan” mean in ancient China for a long time?
A. The first sunrise of the solar year.
B. The first day of the Lunar New Year.
C. The start of spring in the Han Dynasty.
D. The first spring day in the lunar calendar.
15. How is the passage mainly organized?
A. By time order. B. By place change.
C. By people’s stories. D. By different ideas.
16. What is the best title for the passage?
A. China and Rome: Two Traditions.
B. The importance of Spring Festival.
C. The use of the Chinese solar calendar
D. The story of Yuan Dan: Past and Present.
D

“We want to make learning feel like an adventure—not just reading from books, but really experiencing the story.” said the museum’s manager Yu Heng.
17. Why is Mohe believed one of the best places in China to see the northern lights?
A. Because it has a new museum about the aurora.
