About three years ago, something terrible happened to me. That was the day when it took only six hours to break my body and soul. You think I am a very old man — but I am not.
One day, my two brothers and I were coming back from the islands where we often 16 going to get more fish than others. All at once, the sky was 17 with dark clouds and in less than a minute we were in a 18 storm. My younger brother fell into the sea. My elder brother cried out “A big whirlpool (漩涡)!” The moment I heard the word I became 19 .
With the wind and waves, we were going in the direction of the whirlpool. We were 20 . Nothing could save us. I felt sick, 21 I was falling from a mountain top in a dream. We went nearer and nearer to the 22 of the whirlpool. It may 23 strange, but at that moment, when we were on the edge of the whirlpool, I felt calmer than when we were moving towards it. I began to think how 24 a thing it was to die in such a way, and how 25 the power of nature is. Suddenly, we went over the edge. I thought my life was over. But moment after moment 26 , and I was still safe.
The boat was going round in circles at great speed. I saw clearly that there were other objects (物品) in the whirlpool. After a while, I became 27 about the whirlpool itself. I then made three important 28 . The first, the larger the bodies were, the more rapidly they fell; the second, between two objects of equal extent, round objects fell down more rapidly; and the third, between two objects of the same size, objects 29 like a tube fell down more slowly. So I tied myself to a barrel (木桶) to help me 30 . I tried to make my brother understand, but he was 31 frightened and stayed in the boat.
I made the right decision. The boat was 32 into the bottom of the whirlpool. Soon after that, the whirlpool became less 33 . The waves soon carried me to an area where the other fishermen were. 34 , a boat 35 me up. When I told them my story, they did not believe it. Now I have told you, and I cannot expect you to believe me any more than the fishermen did.

The first results of a groundbreaking (开创性的) music project working with deaf children in Dundee will be announced (宣布) next week with the aim of rolling it out across Scotland in the future.
In a project developed through his ongoing partnership with the National Youth Choir (合唱团) of Scotland (NYCOS), musician and educator Paul Whittaker has been spending time since February with groups of deaf and hearing-impaired (听力受损的) children at three Dundee primary schools — Claypotts, Craigiebarns and Tayview — as well as with pupils from a handful of other schools in the area.
“What we wanted to do was find out whether deaf children can sing, and how well they can pick up pitch (高音),” said Mr Whittaker. “What we’re doing on Monday is presenting some of the work that we have been doing.”
What gives the project its strength is that Mr Whittaker has been deaf since birth. “Because I’m deaf myself, I don’t like to put any barriers in the way of deaf children,” he said. “What’s important as well is that the children realise I’m the same as them. I can say: ‘Look at me. I’ve got hearing aids (助听器). I can sign’. It plants the idea in a child that if he can do it, I can do it too.”
Given time and funding (资金) problems, the project hasn’t achieved everything it set out to achieve. “But what has been lovely has been seeing how all of the pupils, from being quite shy and quiet at the start of the project, has really grown up. Some of them can sing really well. They pick up things quite easily,” said Mr Whittaker.
To date, there has been little research done into the connection between deafness, singing and signing. Now, following a smaller pilot project carried out last year in the Highlands with participation from pupils at Stonehaven Academy, the hope is the project can show the benefits of such an approach. It may then be rolled out more widely across Scotland.
41.What makes the music project special?
A.It aims to train world-famous musicians.
B.It introduces new approaches to improve hearing.
C.It teams up with primary schools across Scotland.
D.It focuses on supporting students with hearing problems.
42.What part does Whittaker play in the project?
A.He is a health educator. B.He is a peacekeeper.
C.He is a role model. D.He is a caregiver.
43.In what way is Whittaker happy about the project?
A.It has achieved all of its goals.
B.It enjoys plentiful funding support.
C.It has received international recognition.
D.It sees the students’ impressive learning abilities.
44.What is the expectation for the project in the future?
A.To cooperate with the government.
B.To make it available in more places of Scotland.
C.To seek for more funding for better development.
D.To figure out the connection between deafness and singing.
45.What is the text mainly about?
A.A pioneering project by a deaf musician.
B.A large project for unlocking musical talents.
C.A national project to teach music to children.
D.A unique project studying the impact of music.

Boomerang (回旋镖) children who return to live with their parents after university can be good for families, leading to closer, more supportive relationships and increased contact between the generations, a study has found.
The findings contradict research published earlier this year showing that returning adult children trigger a significant decline in their parents’ quality of life and well-being.
The young adults taking part in the study were “more positive than might have been expected” about moving back home — the shame is reduced as so many of their peers are in the same position, and they acknowledged the benefits of parents’ financial and emotional support. Daughters were happier than sons, often slipping back easily into teenage patterns of behaviour, the study found.
Parents on the whole were more uncertain, expressing concern about the likely duration of the arrangement and how to manage it. But they acknowledged that things were different for graduates today, who leave university with huge debts and fewer job opportunities.
The families featured in the study were middle-class and tended to view the achievement of adult independence for their children as a “family project”. Parents accepted that their children required supports as university students and then as graduates returning home, as they tried to find jobs paying enough to enable them to move out and get on the housing ladder.
“However,” the study says, “day-to-day tensions about the prospects of achieving different dimensions of independence, which in a few extreme cases came close to conflict, characterised the experience of a majority of parents and a little over half the graduates.”
Areas of disagreement included chores, money and social life. While parents were keen to help, they also wanted different relationships from those they had with their own parents, and continuing to support their adult children allowed them to remain close.
46.What is the finding of the previous research?
A.The parents’ quality of life became worse than before.
B.Boomerang children made their parents even happier than before.
C.Boomerang children never did any housework.
D.The parents were looking forward to their children’s return.
47.The underlined word “trigger” in Paragraph 2 may be best replaced by ______.
A.benefit B.defeat
C.cause D.allow
48.What is the attitude of the college graduates towards returning home?
A.They are ashamed of turning to their parents for help.
B.They are proud to be independent from the family.
C.They are doubtful about whether they should return.
D.They are glad that they could come back.
49.What can be inferred as the reason for the “boomerang children” phenomenon?
A.It is harder for the children to secure a satisfying job.
B.The parents are willing to provide support to their children.
C.The children want to keep in closer touch with their parents.
D.There is more house work needed to be done by the children.
50.What is the side effect of the “boomerang children” phenomenon?
A.Both parents and children enjoy a more harmonious relationship.
B.Neither parents nor children want to do the chores at home.
C.There are occasional quarrels between parents and children.
D.Not only parents but also children want to be independent eagerly.

In Colombia, an environmental group is leading a project to save the wild areas in the San Lucas Mountains, with the invaluable assistance of local coffee growers. Since 2016, the areas around San Lucas have been in danger because gold miners and coca planters make more money than coffee farmers. To help out, a group called WebConserva has started a project to establish connections between local coffee farmers and a network of buyers across the nation. This plan is designed to not only enhance the market reach for the farmers’ produce but also to significantly increase their earnings. By doing this, WebConserva is creating a way for farmers to keep growing coffee, which in turn serves as a protective boundary around the forests, ensuring the preservation (保护) of the area’s rich biodiversity (生物多样性).
At present, 10 families are part of the project, growing coffee on 400 hectares (公顷) of land. WebConserva hopes that eventually, this number will grow to 200 families. If that happens, they could help save 20,000 hectares of forest that hasn’t been touched by humans. The families have promised not to cut down any trees to make more space for their crops or to hunt the animals that live there. In return, they get paid $300 when they sell 125 kilograms of coffee.
Arcadio Barajas is a testament (证明) to the project’s impact. His coffee farm sets up a barrier between cattle farms and forests where wild animals live, thus reducing the possibility of conflict between cattle farmers and wild animals. “Cutting down the forest to plant coca and killing wildlife were against my faith, and now I feel that growing coffee lets me be a good guardian of the land,” he said.
Amnobis Romero, once a coca grower and miner, has turned a new leaf. “Many families depended on illegal activities to support their children years ago. Now, we feel it a duty to look after this biodiversity and leave it for future generations,” he said.
People who care about nature want to make San Lucas a national park to keep it safe. But it’s taking a long time to make this happen. Carlos Valderrama, the person in charge of WebConserva, believes that their project can create a way of farming that will work well for many years to come. He said, “This project helps to keep the forests, all the different kinds of plants and animals, and the environment healthy, while also making life better for the people who grow coffee.”
51.What does the WebConserva project aim to achieve in the San Lucas Mountains?
A.To encourage hunting to support local farmers.
B.To increase the mining and coca farming industries.
C.To link local coffee growers with buyers nationwide.
D.To promote cutting down trees for coffee farming space.
52.What is a requirement for coffee growers to earn money from the WebConserva project?
A.Stopping cattle farming near forests. B.Preventing wildlife harm and tree cutting.
C.Changing to organic coffee within one year. D.Donating 10% of their land to national parks.
53.How does WebConserva protect wild areas in San Lucas?
A.By expanding cattle farms. B.By replacing forests with coffee farms.
C.By building physical fences around forests. D.By supporting coffee farming as a protection tool.
54.Why does the author mention Arcadio Barajas and Arnobis Romero?
A.To explain the government’s slow action.
B.To show coffee farming is more profitable than coca.
C.To prove all farmers have abandoned illegal activities.
D.To illustrate how the project transformed farmers’ attitudes.
55.What can we conclude from the passage?
A.Families protecting wildlife will get very rich.
B.WebConserva benefits ecosystems and local people’s life.
C.Gold mining and coca farming have been replaced rapidly.
D.San Lucas will develop into a national park in the near future.
第二部分:写作(共两节,满分35分)
第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,并根据短文内容完成下列各题。
Luke has always been my closest companion these past five years. As you already know, there have been a lot of forest fires during the summer season. Many forests are badly damaged by fire each year. Not far from our shelter, a forest caught fire during this hot summer. We are on July, a heat wave which has been going on for three days.
Luke rushed towards the forest where flames send out a fierce heat. There’s no longer any hope at the moment to wait for Luke to come back to the shelter. In fact, I was waiting for the fire brigade(消防队) to announce me his death in the forest. Suddenly, a fireman burst into my office and informed me that my dog Luke succeeded to save four kittens who were trapped by the flames. According to the fireman, Luke seized the kittens, one by one moving them to a safe place.
I immediately accompanied the fireman to the forest to pick up the rescued kittens. Once on the scene of the incident, Luke was not there. Then we heard the sound of a dog came from the forest barking. I recognized the sound of my dog Luke. The firemen followed the tracks of the dog until they found him barking loudly by the side of an injured fireman who was lying on the ground and desperately waiting for rescue.
Thanks to Luke, four kittens and a fireman were saved. That day, I was very proud of Luke for his two heroic actions. Luke showed much compassion for both animals like him and for a human being who was trying to put out the fire with his colleagues. Truth to tell, my happiness is great and immeasurable.
I paid a visit to the fireman in his house accompanied with my lovely Luke. What a memorable scene when the fireman hugged Luke tightly to his chest! “One thousand thanks, Luke, for saving my life,” the fireman said.
This true story of love and compassion shows us that pets are loving, caring and compassionate. We should love and protect them. Don’t belittle them. Little animals can make enormous things for humans.

49.推理判断题。根据第四段“But they acknowledged that things were different for graduates today, who leave university with huge debts and fewer job opportunities.(但他们承认,如今的毕业生情况有所不同,他们毕业时背负着巨额债务,工作机会也更少)”可推知,孩子们很难找到一份满意的工作是“回巢族”现象的原因。故选A。
50.细节理解题。根据倒数第二段““However,” the study says, “day-to-day tensions about the prospects of achieving different dimensions of independence, which in a few extreme cases came close to conflict, characterised the experience of a majority of parents and a little over half the graduates.”(“然而,”该研究称,“实现不同层面独立前景的日常紧张关系,在一些极端情况下接近冲突,是大多数父母和略高于一半的毕业生的经历。”)” 及第最后一段“Areas of disagreement included chores, money and social life.(分歧领域包括家务、金钱和社交生活)”可知,在少数极端情况下,这种紧张情绪接近冲突。由此可知,“回巢族”现象的副作用是在少数情况下,紧张情绪会导致父母和孩子之间偶尔发生争吵。故选D。

As the president of the Students’ Union, I am writing to call on everyone to join in our environmental campaign “Practice Low-Carbon Living, Build a Better Home.”
Global warming has led to severe consequences, including extreme weather, rising sea levels, and loss of biodiversity. These threats remind us that immediate action is crucial.
To live a low-carbon life, we can start with small steps: reduce electricity usage by turning off unused devices, choose public transport or cycling, avoid single-use plastics, recycle waste, and plant trees. Every effort counts!
