In 1987, educational theorist Neil Fleming set out to help students adapt their practices to better help them keep new information. And so, he created the VARK learning styles: Visual, Auditory, Read/Write, and Kinaesthetic.
Visual
● Images, graphics and visuals
● Mindmaps and diagrams
● Animation
● Colour based
Auditory
● Listening and speaking
● Verbal repetition
● Verbal discussion
● Sound recordings and mnemonic devices
Read/write
● Reading and writing
● Note taking
●Information in written word
Kinaesthetic
● Tactile learning
●Physical activity and movement
●Models and 3D objects
Although the VARK learning styles have been widely regarded as helpful for students who have a better understanding of themselves and how to direct their studying, it has its disadvantages. Despite one learning style making it easier for you to study, it can in some ways be a barrier (阻碍). What if you struggle to learn a particular subject using a specific learning style? It can often lead you to feel as though you’ll never be able to understand the information — rather than thinking another method might work better. It’s common for learners to benefit from more than one learning style; e.g. watching a video of someone putting together furniture (kinaesthetic) and then following the diagram themselves (visual).
So, although the VARK learning styles may be a great way to better understand how best you learn, it’s important to play around with different study methods to see which works best for you, especially when approaching different subjects. Kinaesthetic learning might be great for helping you understand how gravity works, but it might not be so helpful for poetry analysis.
Trying a combination of different learning styles won’t only help you improve your concentration and study motivation, but you’ll also become a more effective learner, spending time on the activities that are going to help you achieve the most effect.
1. Why did Neil Fleming create the VARK learning styles?
A To help students learn better. B. To form a new educational theory.
C. To improve learners’ visual memory. D. To replace traditional learning methods.
2. Which activity best fits the Auditory learning style?
A. Build a 3D model of a cell structure. B. Write summaries of a science textbook.
C. Draw mindmaps for a history lesson. D. Listen to the radio and repeat key points.
3. What advice is given to be a more effective learner?
A. Keep focused on one learning style. B. Identify a specific learning style.
C. Experiment with mixed learning styles. D. Apply the VARK learning styles.

American actor Marc Herrmann says he’s finally able to call himself a full-time working actor — thanks to Chinese micro dramas. He’s one of many Hollywood professionals finding opportunity as China’s short drama platforms gain popularity in the U.S. and reshape the global streaming (流媒体) market.
Behind the boom is the fact that China’s mini-drama industry has developed a complete ecosystem, reshaping the viewer market in film and TV with its “short, fast, and catchy” features. According to the 2024 White Paper on the Development of China’s Short Drama Industry, the American micro-short drama market reached 50.4 billion yuan (about $7.03 billion) last year, beating box office income for the first time. The success of Chinese short dramas overseas is not about spreading domestic (国内的) content, but about localized reinvention in themes and visual language for the overseas market.
Xu Wensong, an associate professor at the School of Cultural Industry Management at the Communication University of China, told us that Chinese short dramas are characterized by appealing storylines, an ability to deliver high emotional value and instant entertainment. With improving production quality, these short dramas hold a certain competitive edge in international markets. “Chinese platforms are good at adjusting content to local tastes”, Xu said.
Micro drama production has restructured the traditional logic of the film and television industry. A Hollywood film editor said that an increasing number of micro dramas funded by Chinese companies, developed by Chinese creative teams, and starring Hollywood actors are being produced in Los Angeles. This, he said, has “rescued” many Hollywood professionals who were on the brink of unemployment.
Sun Jiashan, an associate researcher at the Central Academy of Culture and Tourism Administration, noted that the overseas development of Chinese micro dramas symbolizes a significant practice of “cultural output in the digital age”. Sun believes that micro dramas may become an important tool for China’s cultural soft power, carving out a different path in the global streaming competition.
4. Why are Chinese short dramas successful overseas?
A. Because they meet local tastes.
B. Because they display domestic content.
C. Because they reshape the global streaming market.
D. Because they have developed a complete ecosystem.
5. According to Xu Wensong, which of the following is the characteristic of Chinese short drama?
A. Classic roles. B. Plain stories.
C. Emotional value. D. Localized settings.
6. What does the underlined phrase “on the brink of” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Close to. B. Aware of. C. Confused about. D. Terrified of.
7. What might Sun Jiashan probably agree with about Chinese short dramas?
A. They have promoted economy in USA.
B. They can serve as a cultural messenger.
C. They have revived the Hollywood industry.
D. They can stand for the Chinese streaming soft power.

Sunscreen (防晒霜) is important for keeping skin safe from sun damage and preventing skin cancer. The chemicals in many sunscreens, however, can be harmful for sea life. This has inspired scientists to develop a new kind of sunscreen made from flower pollen (花粉).
Sunscreen works by using special chemicals that block ultraviolet (UV) light from the Sun’s rays, and people often apply it to their skin before going into the ocean or other natural waterways. But the chemicals are washed off by the water and spread into it, affecting the wildlife that lives there. This is especially harmful for coral reefs (珊瑚礁), which support a wide variety of fish, plants, and other underwater life.
To find an alternative, scientists from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore turned to pollen, which is known to be resistant to UV light. The team prepared water-based gels (凝胶) made from pollen of camellia flowers and sunflowers. Then they tested how well those gels blocked UV light, including both UVA and UVB-wavelengths of UV light -produced by the Sun and tanning beds, that damage skin. Both gels took in UV rays, the team found, but the camellia gel took in more UVB rays, shorter wavelength rays mainly responsible for causing sunburn and skin cancers, than the sunflower gel did. When tested on mice, both gels prevented skin damage when the mice were put in UV light for a few minutes per day. Mice that didn’t receive sunscreen had thinner skin after the same UV experience. The team also put samples of the gels in saltwater tanks containing coral, which still appeared healthy after two months.
“What they’re doing are first steps, but they’re really important first steps,” said Craig Downs, the executive director of Haereticus Environmental Laboratory, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving ecosystems. Some of the next steps might be to assess whether the pollen-based sunscreen is harmful to other wildlife in natural environments, then clear safety tests in humans. “But if they are successful,” Downs added, “in five to eight years, this might be a marketable product.”
8. Why did scientists develop pollen-based sunscreen?
A. For low costs. B. For skin safety.
C. For sea reservation. D. For economic benefits.
9. What can we infer from paragraph 3?
A. Sunflower gel takes in most of the UVB rays.
B. Sunflower gel is responsible for causing skin damage.
C. Camellia gel left the mice with thinner skin than regular sunscreen.
D. Camellia gel is more effective in UV protection than sunflower one.
10. What did Craig Downs think of the pollen-based sunscreen?
A. Profitable. B. Dangerous. C. Demanding. D. Alarming.
11. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the passage?
A. The History of Sunscreen Development.
B. Pollen-Based Sunscreen: A Safe Choice.
C. UV Light: The Main Cause of Skin Damage.
D. The preservation of Coral Reefs from Sunscreen.

Scientists discovered the reason why China’s Terracotta Army’s weapons remained so well preserved for over 2,000 years: a combination of bronze, and the soil the army was buried in.
Qinshihuang, the first emperor of a unified China, was buried with an army of terracotta warriors in a mausoleum in Xi’An, a World Heritage UNESCO site. No two faces of these warriors are alike, but what’s fascinated archaeologists is just how these warriors’ weapons have been preserved over the centuries.
When archaeologists uncovered this army in the 1970s, some fans of “ancient lost technologies” believed these weapons had survived the test of time due to some lost technology ancestors used. Another theory suggested that these weapons had been treated with anti-rust chemicals like chromium (铬), so it was believed that people had treated these weapons with a sort of chromium coating.
However the authors of a recent study believe the two theories should “be given up.” Firstly, chromium was found on only 37 of the 464 weapons examined, mostly on areas like handles and triggers. These parts were wooden and would have been coated with lacquer (漆), which contained chromium at that time. Secondly, the best-preserved weapons weren’t the ones that had much chromium coating, so this theory couldn’t stand on its own two feet.
Simply put, the preservation was managed thanks to a combination of the higher tin content in the bronze, as well as the specific soil the army was buried in. When the scientists looked into the soil, it showed a slightly alkaline (碱性的) chemical composition and had small particles that would have prevented natural acids and organic matter from rusting through the metals.
It would have been cool to claim the ancient Terracotta Army’s weapon preservation was linked to some long-lost technology. However, it’s even cooler that scientists are able to figure out the long-standing mystery.
12. What is the main purpose of the article?
A. To show new weapon preservation findings.
B. To compare weapon preservation technologies.
C. To investigate earlier metal preservation chemicals.
D. To introduce theories about preservation technology.
13. What led to the good preservation of the Terracotta Army’s weapons?
A. The specific chemicals in soil.
B. The chromium coating on weapons.
C. The use of lost anti-rust technology.
D. The mixture of bronze and specific soil.
14. What does the author mean by saying the underlined sentence in paragraph 4?
A. The theory was logically sound.
B. The theory failed to prove itself.
C. The theory missed the key points.
D. The theory shall stand the test of time.
15. What is the author’s attitude towards the discovery?
A. Confident. B. Admiring. C. Doubtful. D. Unconcerned.

Being an information technology, or IT, worker is not a job I envy. They are the ones expected to instantly fix a projector that stops working, even right in the middle of a critical meeting. They have to tolerate the bad mood of colleagues who are upset after calling the help desk repeatedly for the same issue. They also know there are better, more reliable and faster systems available, but their employer simply will not provide the funds to buy them.
According to a recent survey, employees reliant on IT support often consider it a major source of job dissatisfaction. Through no fault of their own, they can suddenly find their productivity deteriorating (退化) or quality control non-existent. And there’s little they can do about it.
The experience of using IT affects almost every aspect of the workplace. It has become a crucial part of employees’ overall work experience. When IT is operating as it should, employee self-confidence increases.
Their job satisfaction, too, can surge when well-functioning machines relieve them of dull tasks or repetitive processes. But if there’s one thing that triggers widespread frustration, it’s a failed IT transformation project. In such cases, high expectations are dashed, and a long list of promised efficiencies fails to materialize. This occurs when business leaders implement IT initiatives with little consideration of how those changes will impact the end user.
This is why managers should appreciate how influential the IT user experience is, and make a substantial effort to ensure their IT team fixes programming errors and application crashes. Adequate and timely IT support should also be available to help users resolve technological issues at work. More importantly, IT practitioners need to understand how employees feel when they use IT.
Therefore businesses need to design their IT infrastructure (基础设施) to fit their employees’ work, rather than force employees to work around the company’s IT limitations.
16. What makes the author say IT work is not a job he envies?
A. Fixing unexpected project problems.
B. Upgrading the present systems repeatedly.
C. Resolving tensions among unhappy colleagues.
D. Handling high-pressure tasks with poor support.
17. What is said about Information Technology’s influence on employees?
A. It mainly helps the tech-skilled.
B. Its negatives may outweigh positives.
C. It can hurt or improve work and well-being.
D. It often lowers productivity and satisfaction.
18. What should managers and businesses do to improve the IT experience?
A. Make IT training available to staff.
B. Tailor technology to fit human work patterns.
C. Upgrade systems regardless of cost for efficiency.
D. Focus first on solving urgent technical breakdowns.
19. Which would be the best title for the text?
A. Employee Training in the Digital Age
B. The Rising Cost of Business Technology
C. Why IT Departments Need More Funding
D. Human-Centered IT: A Key to Productivity

A. To help students learn better.
【答案】1. A 2. D 3. C

7 What might Sun Jiashan probably agree with about Chinese short dramas?
A. They have promoted economy in USA.
B. They can serve as a cultural messenger.
C. They have revived the Hollywood industry.
D. They can stand for the Chinese streaming soft power.
【答案】4. A 5. C 6. A 7. B

【答案】8. C 9. D 10. A 11. B

However, the authors of a recent study believe the two theories should “be given up.” Firstly, chromium was found on only 37 of the 464 weapons examined, mostly on areas like handles and triggers.
【答案】12. A 13. D 14. B 15. B

推理判断题。根据文章第一段中“Scientists discovered the reason why China's Terracotta Army's weapons remained so well preserved for over 2,000 years: a combination of bronze, and the soil the army was buried in.(科学家发现了中国兵马俑的武器为何能保存超过2000年如此完好的原因:是青铜和埋葬军队的土壤的共同作用。)”以及文章最后一段中“However, it‘s even cooler that scientists are able to figure out the long-standing mystery.(然而,更酷的是科学家们能够解开这个长期存在的谜团。)”可知,文章的核心是呈现一项科学研究的新发现与新结论,即解开了兵马俑武器保存完好的谜团。故选A。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第五段中“Simply put, the preservation was managed thanks to a combination of the higher tin content in the bronze, as well as the specific soil the army was buried in.(简而言之,保存得以实现是由于青铜中较高的锡含量以及军队被埋葬的特定土壤的结合。)”可知,武器保存完好的直接原因是青铜和特定土壤的共同作用。故选D。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据前文“Secondly, the best-preserved weapons weren't the ones that had much chromium coating(其次,保存最完好的武器并不是那些有大量铬涂层的武器)”可知,关键事实与铬涂层防腐的理论预期相悖,从而削弱了该理论的基础。因此,划线部分意为“该理论无法独立成立/站不住脚”。选项B“The theory failed to prove itself.(该理论未能证明自己。)”符合此意。故选B。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“It would have been cool to claim the ancient Terracotta Army’s weapon preservation was linked to some long-lost technology. However, it’s even cooler that scientists are able to figure out the long-standing mystery.(如果声称古代兵马俑的武器保存与某些失传的技术有关,那本来会很酷。然而,更酷的是科学家们能够解开这个长期存在的谜团。)”作者通过“would have been cool”与“it’s even cooler”的完整对比,明确表达了对“科学家最终查明真相”这一事实持有比“拥有失传技术”更加强烈的欣赏与赞叹之情。因此,作者的态度是钦佩的。选项B“Admiring.(钦佩的)”正确。故选B。

Therefore, businesses need to design their IT infrastructure (基础设施) to fit their employees’ work, rather than force employees to work around the company’s IT limitations.
【答案】16. D 17. C 18. B 19. D

【答案】 Guardians of the Blue Planet: Our Shared Responsibility
Dear fellow freshmen,
Imagine Earth as a fragile blue marble floating in space — our only home. Yet, deforestation, pollution, and climate change threaten its survival. It’s time we act as guardians, not bystanders.
Why protect Earth? Simple: without clean air, water, or fertile soil, life ceases. Every plastic bottle discarded, every tree felled, and every carbon emission accelerates irreversible damage. But hope lies in collective action. Start small: recycle waste, switch off lights, plant a sapling, or walk instead of driving. These choices ripple into global change.
Let’s pledge today to be Earth’s stewards.
Thank you!
