I am an old street lamp that has stood at the quiet corner of Maple Street for many years. I have watched cars pass by and people walk in a hurry, but I always felt lonely because no one ever paid attention to me. My metal pole (金属杆) was covered in heavy rust (锈) , my glass cover was broken, and my light was so weak that it could hardly brighten the corner at night. I thought that I would be forgotten forever as a useless and shabby (破旧的) old lamp.
One cold evening, a little girl called Lily walked past with her mother. When she noticed that my light was still trying to shine though I was broken, she stopped at once and looked at me carefully. She told her mother that I looked cold and lonely, and that I needed warmth and care from others.
The next day, Lily returned with a toolbox, some blue paint and a new bulb, which her father had prepared for her. She cleaned my rust (锈) gently and fixed my broken glass, while her father helped me get my bright light back. For the first time in years, I shone so brightly that I could hardly believe myself.
Soon, the corner where I stood became warm and lively. Kids drew beautiful pictures on me, an old man put a bench nearby, and birds loved to sing on me. I was no longer lonely or useless.
I finally realized that everything in the world has its own value, and that a little kindness can make the most common things special and warm the whole community.

In the past, many Europeans were afraid of a beautiful red fruit—the tomato. They called it the “poison apple” and believed it could cause illness or even death. This belief was so strong that for nearly 200 years, the tomato was grown only as a decorative (装饰性的) garden plant. Later, brave farmers and cooks discovered its juicy, tasty flesh was perfectly safe. Thanks to explorers and traders, the tomato finally traveled across the world and became a kitchen favorite.
But why was it once considered poisonous (有毒的)? Like apples, the tomato has a secret defense system. Tomatoes belong to the plant family Solanaceae, which also includes potatoes, eggplants, and peppers. Some plants in this family produce a natural chemical called solanine (龙葵素). In tomatoes, solanine is found mainly in the leaves, stems, and green unripe (不成熟的) fruit—not in the ripe red tomato we eat. If eaten in large amounts, solanine can cause headaches or stomach problems. Still, you’d have to eat a whole bowl of green leaves to feel any effect.
Why does the tomato plant produce solanine? Nature designed it for protection! When insects or animals try to eat its leaves, the bitter taste and mild toxicity (毒性) teach them to stay away. That way, the plant can grow healthily and produce more bright red tomatoes.
Don’t worry—the ripe tomato fruit is not only safe but also nutritious. It’s sweet, juicy, and full of vitamins. People now use tomatoes in salads, soups, sauces, and even drinks. It’s one of the most popular fruits in the world today (yes, it’s scientifically a fruit).
So, next time you enjoy ketchup (番茄酱) or a fresh tomato salad, remember: its journey to your table wasn’t always easy. But today, this once “dangerous” fruit has become a delicious and healthy friend.
28. What does the underlined word “defense” mean?
A. The way to grow.
B. The protection from attack.
C. The help from other plants.
29. What can we learn from Paragraph 3?
A. Solanine makes tomatoes taste sweeter to attract animals.
B. Tomato plants use solanine to defend themselves from insects.
C. Humans can safely eat large amounts of solanine.
30. What does the example of ketchup in the last paragraph mainly try to tell us?
A. Eating ketchup is the best way to enjoy tomatoes.
B. Tomatoes can be made into different kinds of food.
C. People have totally changed their ideas about tomatoes.
31. What does the text mainly tell us?
A. A history of European farming practices.
B. Why tomatoes were once feared but are now loved worldwide.
C. The health benefits of eating ripe tomatoes.

24. Why did the street lamp feel lonely at first?
A. It was broken and hardly noticed.
B. It had no light to brighten the street.
C It stood too far from the neighborhood.
25. Why did Lily stop and notice the old lamp?
A. She planned to clean the rust off it.
B. She was touched by its weak but brave light.
C. She wanted to draw pictures on it.
26. What does the underlined word “me” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. The bench. B. The street lamp. C. The picture.
27. What is the writer’s main purpose of writing the passage?
A. To show us how to make a warm community.
B. To encourage us to repair old things by ourselves.
C. To tell us that kindness can make small things valuable.
C
