Long before I had studied a second language,I had an absolute romance with my first language-
English. When I was a boy,I realized that by applying certain linguistic rules,I could coin
words that could be entirely understood. If something that qualifies has qualification,I thought something
that terrifies ought to have terrification. This way of thinking opened up a whole world of creativity to me
that had never existed before.
However,when I started studying other languages,I lost this fascination.The more I've interacted
with other masters of many languages, the more this seems like an almost universally shared experience:
as one falls in love with other languages and digs into other forms of communication, one starts to lose an
appreciation of his or her native tongue. This is perfectly natural. As we begin to expand our views in new
and exciting ways through foreign languages, our native language begins to seem uninteresting, and even
annoying by comparison.

But then something happened that completely refueled the love I had for my mother tongue:I
encountered that same creative passion I once felt in somebody else's work. One of my favorite books as a
child was Through the Looking-Glass by Lewis Carroll.Reading this book over again as an adult,I was
just as allured by it as when I was a kid.
Some words in this book either aren't real words,or weren't real words at the time that the book was
written. But they feel like specific types of words that you associate with a certain sort of feeling. The
linguistic differences that went into every non-content word were absolutely fascinating, and the more I
read and recited poems in this book, the more I felt the familiar warm passion for English.I decided to
take some focus away from foreign languages for a while just to focus on and properly appreciate my first
language.

WWF,in collaboration with the Pacific Coast Food Waste Commitment (PCFWC),Afresh, and Shelf

per store on average.
The AI technology was able to reduce waste by increasing the accuracy of ordering and stock (
requirements, leading to more precise ordering and stocking, and higher sales. While traditionally these
tasks have been left to human perception and calculation,AI handles enormous amounts of historical and
real-time data to better match ordering with demand, which greatly benefits consumers. While the biggest
waste reductions may be seen in early stages, the AI technology only gets better at predicting customer
behavior over time, which can then help to reduce waste of seasonal items (for example, holiday baking
items)that may only be in demand once a year.
Grocery retail is responsible for more than 10 percent of the kind of extra food that leads to waste in
the US,so the implications of using AI to further reduce grocery retail waste are considerable. It's a
relatively easy-to-implement solution once the AI providers map retailers'data and clarify the
relations between them.It more than covers its costs once it's in place. The AI solutions also increase
labor efficiency by up to 20 percent per store through automating stock tracking and reducing the amount
of time spent on ordering and restocking shelves.
The pilot success has led Afresh to move beyond fresh produce and expand to meat, seafood.and
other categories in grocery retail, enabling it to better serve its customers and create greater impacts.Shelf
Engine is already working in categories beyond produce as well.WWF estimated that if the results from
the pilot were copied in these other departments across the retail industry,an estimated 1.1 million tons of
food waste could be avoided.
28.How does the author introduce the topic of the text?
A.By offering statistics.
B.By making a contrast.
C.By giving an example.
D.By defining a concept.
29.Why does the AI technology benefit consumers?
A.It shortens the delivery time.
B.It decreases packaging costs.
C.It controls unplanned purchases.
D.It satisfies their needs precisely.
30.What helps the AI technology become a practical solution?
A.Automating stock management.
B.Increasing total store sales.
C.Predicting seasonal purchases.
D.Identifying relations within figures.
31.What does the last paragraph mainly focus on about the AI technology?
'A.Its huge innovation.

Contextualism(语境主义)has a long history in historiography(历史编纂学),dating back to the
work of historians such as Leopold von Ranke in the 19th century. His emphasis on understanding
historical events as they actually were laid the groundwork for the development of contextualist approaches
to historical interpretation. In the 20th century, historians such as Quentin Skinner and J.G.A.Pocock
further developed contextualist approaches, emphasizing the importance of understanding historical texts
and events within their specific linguistic and cultural contexts.
A contextualist approach to historical interpretation requires a deep understanding of the cultural,
social, and time context in which historical events occurred. This involves considering factors such as the
cultural standards and values of the time, the social structures and institutions that shaped historical
events, and the time context, including the specific historical period and any relevant events or trends.
One of the key challenges of historical interpretation is avoiding anachronism(时代错位)and
presentism.Anachronism involves putting modern concepts, values,or beliefs onto historical figures or
events, while presentism involves judging historical events by modern standards.A contextualist approach
helps historians avoid these errors by emphasizing the importance of understanding historical events within
their specific context. For example,it would be anachronistic to put modern ideas of human rights onto
historical figures such as Thomas Jefferson, who owned slaves yet became the leading author of the United
States Declaration of Independence.Instead, historians must consider Jefferson's actions within the
context of his time, taking into account the popular attitudes towards slavery and human rights.
While contextualism is a powerful approach to historical interpretation,it is not without its challenges
and limitations. Some of the key challenges include:the complexity of reconstructing historical context,
which can be incomplete;the risk of cultural and historical relativism, which can make it difficult to
evaluate certain historical events critically;the challenge of balancing contextual understanding with the
need to draw broader conclusions and lessons from historical events.
32.What did Skinner and Pocock contribute to contextualism?
A.They clarified its definition.
B.They demonstrated its logic.
C.They expanded its applications.
D.They emphasized its objectives.
33.Which factor may belong to the social context?
A.Strict laws and regulations.
B.Unusual customs and fashions.
C.Social values and judgments.
D.Linguistic symbols and habits.

35.Why is contextualism an imperfect approach?
A.It may reach a narrow conclusion.
B.It infers with second-hand records.
C.It digs into some pointless elements.
D.It may find excuses for subjectivity.

Singapore has no natural freshwater resources and has been ranked among the most water-stressed
countries in the world.36 Thus, after gaining independence in 1965,Singapore realized that it had to
take its water future into its own hands and developed a comprehensive water management plan.
Singapore has developed four pillars(支柱)of water supply:imported water, desalinated(谈化的)
water, local water storage and recycled water. To secure water supplies,it has entered into agreements
with Malaysia, which supplies half of the total water needs. However,Singapore is projected to stop
importing water by 2061.37
Today,Singapore has five desalination plants, which provide 25%0 of the island nation's total water
supply. These plants function as water purification facilities.38 It is no wonder they fit into the city's
contemporary landscape naturally.Singapore's goal is to increase its desalination capacity to meet 30%of
its water needs by 2060.
39 Rooftop water is channeled through pipes into a network of rivers, canals and reservoirs(
)The Marina Barrage, covering 10,000 hm2,not only collects fresh water but also acts as a flood
protection structure.
Singapore also excels at treating wastewater. At a cost of up to $10 billion, the island nation has
built a modern, centralized wastewater treatment system and efficiently reused wastewater."All
wastewater is collected, treated and reused as much as possible,"said Jon Church of UN Water.40
The government plans to increase this recycling proportion to 55%by 2060,with the aim of improving the
quality of life for its citizens.

第四部分写作
第一节
Dear fellow students,
I understand the convenience brought by AI tools, yet Chinese courses go far beyond language com-
munication.
Some students believe AI tools are so useful that Chinese courses are unnecessary. However,I believe
that the courses are quite valuable.First of all, while Al tools can translate words, they can't fully convey
cultural meanings.Apart from it,language courses let you communicate naturally.Talking with native
speakers face-to-face feels warmer than the cold translation tools.
Join the Chinese courses-you might discover a whole new world!
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
When the students started drawing,Ben noticed something amazing.Instead of focusing on copying
every detail, they leaned in,their eyes lighting up as they watched the leaves dancing in the wind. One
girl's pencil moved quickly, capturing how sunlight fell on the grass like golden coins.A boy laughed as he
drew a squirrel, adding a shaky line to show its rush.Even the old tree in their sketches seemed to
breathe-some drew its branches bending gently, others added musical notes for the birds singing above.
The park wasn't just shapes anymore, but was full of life.
After the class, many students merrily walked to Ben."Mr.Ben,look!"a girl held up her sketch-
book,where a butterfly's wings were pink and orange,as if still fluttering."I didn't just draw it-I re-
membered how it felt when it landed on my hand for a second,"she said.A boy showed his drawing of the
pond, with small water waves from a jumping fish.Ben nodded with his heart warm.He knew now that
art wasn't about perfect lines. It was about catching the spark of life that made the world feel real. And
today, his students had finally found it.

of the building fall and heard a boy crying from the ground-floor window.
W:What did you do then?
M:I instantly asked a nearby stranger to call the emergency rescue team. Then,I found it too dangerous
to rush into the building directly or use the damaged stairs,so I climbed over the broken walls to reach
the child.I finally managed to get us both out safely.
W:I bet his parents were relieved to see their son, safe and sound.
M:Absolutely! When they saw their son, they hugged him tightly and kept thanking me.
