Even when Kevin Kovacs was a toddler(蹒跚学步的孩子),his mother recognized his
artistic talent.At 2,he'd paint with his parents,both keen photographers,and,by 5,
he'd started drawing.During family trips to coastal towns across South West England,he
would draw inspiration from the scenery and buildings he encountered, which, over time,
his mother collected and shared online. Now,at only 8 years old,Kevin has staged his
first solo()exhibition at the Tacchi-Morris Arts Center in Taunton,England,
after gaining the attention of gallery staff over social media.
"For an 8-year-old boy doing that now, what might he be doing in the future?"Andy
Pulleyn, the director of the Tacchi-Morris Arts Center, said. The exhibition contains
several of Kevin's watercolor paintings, most of which describe boats leisurely moving
around in water. Each composition showcases a remarkable control over the medium in
an almost Impressionist style."I was very impressed with the work that he did for his
age,"Angela Harding,the exhibition's coordinator,adds."The more I saw,the more I
could tell that it was a constant talent rather than just a one-off.
Kevin's mother,Natalia,recalls that during the exhibition's opening night,even
some collectors had expressed interest in purchasing featured watercolors."You can see
that he's now really into boats, and he tells me it comes very easily to him,"the proud
mother told the SWNS news agency."I remember being told by other artists boats are
very hard to do-but for him,it's easy!"
Kevin offered a similarly optimistic view of the exhibition:"I am happy that people
can see my art on the walls and I hope for another exhibition in London.Kevin's solo
exhibition is currently open to the public,at the Tacchi-Morris Arts Center in Taunton,
England.

The early civilization of Mesopotamia consisted of fairly small farming communities.
A common theory is that they may have originally come together in order to integrate the
need for irrigation ()systems;the Tigris and Euphrates rivers are known for flooding
unpredictably,so it took a lot of human effort to create the canals necessary to shift
floodwaters and irrigate the farmlands near the rivers.Recent archaeological evidence
suggests other motives, however, including the need for protection from opposing groups
and access to natural resources that were concentrated in a specific area.
Of the areas in which agriculture developed, the Fertile Crescent enjoyed significant
advantages. Many nutritious crops like wheat and barley grew naturally in the region.
Several of the key animal species that were first domesticated by humans were also native
to the region, including goats, sheep, and cows. The region was also much more mild and
productive than it is today, and the change from hunting and gathering to large-scale
farming was possible in Mesopotamia in a way that it was not in most other regions of the
ancient world.
The food surplus ()that agriculture made possible in the Fertile Crescent eventually
led to the emergence of the first large settlements. Some of the earliest that were large enough
to qualify as towns or even small cities were Jericho in Palestine, which existed by about 8000
BCE,and Catal Huyuk in Turkey, which existed by about 7500 BCE.
From their remains it becomes possible to piece together certain facts about ancient
societies on the tip of civilization.First,it is clear that the earliest settlements had significant
social divisions. One of the features of civilization is the increasing complexity of social
divisions,and with them,of social grade.In Catal Huyuk,tombs()have revealed that
some people were buried with jewelry and wealth, while others were buried with practically

Dogs do more than people think. They comfort patients in hospitals and students on
campuses, find out bombs at airports and stadiums, and even help scientists track endangered
species. Now,these multi-skilling dogs are being used to help rewild an urban nature reserve in
England. All they have to do is walk around while wearing special holey backpacks filled
with seeds.
The pilot project is underway at a 25-acre park in Lewes,a small town in East Sussex,
England, roughly 50 miles south of London. The protected area includes wet woodlands,
ponds, floodplains, and so on.The park gets a lot of foot traffic from both humans and
dogs, which has caused some areas to become degraded.Park managers learned about an
innovative rewilding project in Chile:After wildfires in 2017,three border dogs wearing
seed-filled backpacks helped restore the landscape.
Inspired by this, the managers recruited (ten pet dogs, outfitted them with
special backpacks, and sent them to a wooded area that had lost most of its ground vegetation,
including grasses and wildflowers. The backpacks were filled with seeds of 23 plants, including
foxgloves, bluebells, and orchids.Sand was mixed in to track the dogs'movements. Some
trees were cut back to let in more sunlight.
Dogs, like wolves, were well-suited for spreading seeds as they explore areas humans
don't usually go.They mimicked the behavior of wolves, which once wandered long
distances sowing seeds in their fur.The project leader,Dylan Walker, noted that rewilding
often involved reintroducing large herbivores(食草动物),which was impractical in an urban
reserve.

The dogs didn't seem to mind the backpacks. Some plants have already started growing,
and park managers expect more flowers next spring. The project is also engaging the public in
ecological conservation and changing the view of dogs, often seen as a hateful animal by
conservationists.Walker suggests reimagining dogs and their owners as heroes for nature.

A.Comfort visitors in the urban nature reserve.
B.Move about carrying packs with seeds inside.
C.Find out harmful objects in the 25-acre park.
D.Track endangered species in the protected area.
13.Why did the park managers cut back some trees?
A.To clear paths for dogs.
B.To make room for new plants.

D.To increase natural light exposure.
14.What does the underlined word "mimicked"in Paragraph 4 mean?

第二节(共10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15分)
阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
If you've ever visited a temple fair or been to a food or night market in China, then
bets are you've probably seen sugar paintings or sugar figurines being sold off to 36
(long)passers-by.Both are a form of Chinese sugar art,a traditional Chinese folk art
with a long history 37(date)back hundreds of years.
Sugar painting was part of popular street culture back in the older days.Although
much less common nowadays, you'll still find them at temple 38 (fair)during
Chinese New Year,39 sale in some parks and at a few shops in Beijing.
These edible(可食用的)“paintings'”40(make)from boiling saccharose and
maltose, and 41 first key thing to making these intricate shapes is to control the
temperature 42 (proper). If the temperature is too high, the syrup will be too watery
to shape;if the temperature is too low,the syrup will become hard and difficult to
stretch..The hot sugar syrup is dropped onto a marble slab(大理石板)in the43(design)
pattern and then becomes solid as the temperature cools,44 means that another key
part of making a perfect sugar painting is speed!Sugar painting should be done smoothly
in one continuous stream,45 there can't be any breaks in the painting process.Sugar
painters don't use stencils ()and instead rely on images they've memorized in their
minds.

I love Jersey tomatoes. Not only for their exceptional flavor, but for their distinct
taste and practicality. The tomato is truly the Swiss Army knife of vegetables-they have
a wide range of uses in cooking and diet:they can be eaten raw or cooked and are very
flexible ingredients in the kitchen.
After a multi-year rest,last summer I proudly reestablished myself as a vegetable
gardener.I enlisted the help of a carpenter friend,who constructed a 20-foot-by-30-foot
raised-bed backyard garden, completely encased in wire on four sides and top,to prevent
animals from breaking in.
One Sunday,I carefully selected the finest vegetable and tomato shoots I could find.
I industriously planned to allow enough room for various kinds of tomatoes:Big Boy,
Beefsteak,Early Girl,Celebrity and Fourth of July tomatoes.Given my enthusiasm to
include as many varieties as possible,I changed my original planting design to narrow the
distance between the shoots. To further accommodate my master plan, huge clay
containers were added within the garden's aisles ()I was determined to maximize
my production.Seeing those containers,my neighbors were full of praise for this idea.
My tiny farm was carefully nurtured as the days grew warmer and longer.By June,
the tomato plants were heavy with green fruits. To prevent their branches breaking,I
found some strings and long poles to give them support.Feeling interesting,David, the
son of Mrs.Henderson who lived next door to me,volunteered to help me to stick the
poles into the earth and I tied the tomato vines to them.By July, the early-variety
tomatoes began to ripen. To fertilize ()I added coffee grounds to the soil, which
further sped their growth.
By August, the garden was going at its fullest. My prized tomatoes began climbing
up the side walls, mere inches away from the ceiling wire and giving 20 pounds of produce
a week.My wife and I were forced to consume tomatoes at every meal,in every way
imaginable. My freezer were packed with tomatoes.A good tomato harvest seemed to
have brought us a sweet burden.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
One day,my wife said to me,"Why don't we share these delicious tomatoes with
others?”
Some neighbors would come to our backyard, admiring the tomatoes while
discussing tomato recipes.
