(Text 1)
W:I don’t understand how you got a ticket. I thought you were a careful driver.
M:I usually am, but I thought I could get through the crossing before the lights turned red. I was driving too fast so I hit a car.
(Text 2)
W:Can you tell me how much it costs to repair the TV set?
M:Well, the set is very old. It’ll cost about 100 pounds. However, a new one may cost you 120 pounds more or less. So it’s not worth repairing.
(Text 3)
W:How many people are they interviewing?
M:They interviewed sixteen the first time, and now four of us were chosen to go back for the second interview.
W:I hope it goes well. Good luck. I hope you can get the job.
(Text 4)
M:The guests are leaving for New York today on the 11 o’clock flight. It’s too late. So there will be no bus then. We need someone to get them to the airport on time.
W:I’d be happy to, but my car is under repair now.
M:In that case, we have to call a taxi.
(Text 5)
W:Mary and I are going to the concert. Do you want to come, too?
M:Sorry, but I’m meeting Jane. She’s writing an article and she has asked me to help collect materials for it.
W:An article? About what?
M:Oh, just old churches. Anyway, I’ll see her at the library at half past two.
(Text 6)
W:Sunshine Hotel, may I help you?
M:Yes, I’m phoning up because I have booked a room for an overseas visitor who won’t be able to come now and so I’ll have to cancel it, I’m afraid.
W:What is the name, please?
M:It was a double room booked in the name of Dr. R. Sun from January 14th, for a week.
W:Ah, yes, I’ve got it. And now you want to change the booking, do you?
M:I wish I could, but it now appears that he won’t be able to come at all.
W:Well, sir, I’ll cancel it then. I hope we can help you some other time.
(Text 7)
W:Dr. Carter’s Office.
M:I’d like to make an appointment with Dr. Carter, please.
W:Okay. Could I have your name please?
M:Yes. My name is Ronald Schuller.
W:And may I ask who referred you to our office?
M:Uh, I drove past your office yesterday and I saw your number.
W:Okay. How about the day after tomorrow on Wednesday at 4 o’clock?
M:Uh. Do you happen to have an opening in the morning? I usually pick up my kids from school around that time.
W:Okay. How about Tuesday or Thursday at 8:00 am?
M:Can it be earlier, like 7:30?
W:No. I’m sorry.
M:Well, in that case, Thursday would be fine.
(Text 8)
W:Look! Here is the information about the evening courses.
M:Flower arranging. That’s a real course. Why would someone want to do that?
W:You watch TV for 3 hours every Saturday and many people find that boring too.
M:OK, relax. Let’s see what else is there.
W:Photography. That looks interesting.
M:But look at the price. I don’t think I can afford it. Web design is pretty cheap. What do you think?
W:I don’t want to work on the computer in the evening.
M:Hey, look, how about Indian cooking? It starts this week. A little bit expensive.
W:You know how much I love Indian food. I’ll call them tomorrow to see if they want new students.
M:OK.
(Text 9)
W:Hey, Jack. Are you going to the party in town tonight?
M:No, I’d better stay at home.
W:Why? It is your favourite.
M:Well ... no.
W:Jack, are you yourself? What has happened? Are you having a fever?
M:Not really. It’s all because of my professor. We were asked to turn in a paper on Friday morning, but I haven’t started writing even a single word.
W:Why didn’t you write it?
M:I was very busy these days. I had been preparing for my English exam all the time, so I had no time.
W:Oh, come on. I think you should have a good rest. Let’s enjoy this free Wednesday night.
M:Anne, listen, I really can’t.
W:Are you serious?
M:Yes, you know it means a lot to me.
W:OK, I understand. I will go by myself. Could you lend me your car, please?
M:But you don’t have a driver’s license.
W:Who cares?
M:Well, well, Anne. I am going to drive you there and you can call a taxi when the party is over.
W:All right.
(Text 10)
What would your life be like if you were Albert Einstein? What clothes would be in your wardrobe if you were Madonna? Well now you can discover the answer to all these questions at the Fame Hotel in California.
When you enter the room, you enter the life of a famous person. The owner of the hotel has tried to fill the room with objects, clothes, even food that he thinks the stars would have liked. Madonna’s wardrobe is full of beautiful white dresses; Albert Einstein doesn’t have any socks in his wardrobe because he never wore them! I spoke to one guest staying in the Elvis Presley room. “I love this hotel,” he said to me. “I wanted to know what Elvis Presley would eat for breakfast and now I know.” That guest eats pancakes and strawberry ice cream every morning, just as Elvis liked to do. On the next table, the Einstein room’s guest is eating cabbage soup! The company plans to open another Fame Hotel in New York next year and there are plans to expand into Europe too. I look forward to staying in the Winston Churchill suite in London!

I have been playing basketball since I was in 6th grade. I first started out in the summer before 6th grade when I played for the Park District Traveling Basketball Team. This is where I first learned how to play basketball and found out I wasn’t very good at it. This is the main reason why I liked football more than basketball, because I was naturally good at football and didn’t have to work as hard. But because of the way I was brought up — always being encouraged to never give up, I kept at it and kept working on my basketball skills so I could be good enough to play for my high school basketball team. I played for my high school basketball team during my junior and senior years of high school.
During those years in high school, I really began to practice hard on improving my basketball skills. My main goal was to get an athletics scholarship to college and get a free education. I indeed achieved this goal and was awarded a two-year basketball scholarship at Parkland Junior College. There in my two years I was truly better than I was when I first started out playing basketball, which I know was because of the hard work I put into improving my skills all throughout my life.
After having two good seasons at Parkland on and off the court (球场) I graduated. The final step I had in mind was to come to Northern Illinois University and make the basketball team. Many doubted me and said I wasn’t good enough to make the team, but instead of listening to them, giving up or stopping working hard like I’ve been doing all my life, I worked the hardest I’ve worked over the summer. And all the hard work paid off, and I am now a member of the Northern Illinois University Basketball Team.

C.The author’s former team.
D.The author’s family.

26.How did the author develop the passage?( )
A.By making comparisons.
B.By giving examples.
C.By following the order of time.
D.By describing the changes in space order.

D.Where there is a will, there is a way.

Businesses are finding more uses for virtual reality (VR) as the technology develops.
VR is no longer only for gaming or enjoyment. An American company called Blue Goji is using VR to improve one’s health by making exercise more fun.
Blue Goji has offices in Austin, the capital of Texas. The company showed its workout machine called the Infinity treadmill (跑步机) at the South by Southwest festival. A person using the treadmill wears a virtual reality headset when exercising. Before starting, the user is connected to a belt to prevent falls. Then, the user plays a VR game while running on the machine. The game can transport the user into the virtual world, where he or she can be racing against virtual people.
The cost of the hardware and the computer software program is $12,000. That is a lot of money for most people. But Kyra Constam of Blue Goji says the virtual reality treadmill is ideal for 2 places where people go to exercise, like high-end gyms or recreation centers.
Recently, Leonardo Mattiazzi tested the Infinity treadmill. Mattiazzi said he had a strong feeling to actually get running and do something that pushed his limits. He said the experience was more interesting than running inside the gym without actually going anywhere.
Constam noted that a lot of VR experiences cause motion sickness (晕动病) because people are in motion during the game, but not moving in real life. But when the user is moving on the treadmill and in the game, the chances of motion sickness are reduced. She said there is generally a learning curve for VR. The first time users feel lost, but the more you do it, the more you get used to it.
After carefully studying the users’ experiences, Blue Goji plans to begin selling the Infinity treadmill to the public.

29.What do we know about the Infinity treadmill?( )
A.Users can not run on it.
B.It is too expensive for most people.
C.Users can race against anyone.
D.It can be bought in high-end gyms.
The cost of the ...for most people.
30.How did Leonardo Mattiazzi feel about the Infinity treadmill?( )
A.Content. B.Disappointed.
C.Doubtful. D.Indifferent.

A problem had been upsetting me for days — I just couldn’t solve it, and it was driving me crazy. But then I went for a walk and suddenly came up with the answer. It’s a great feeling — and this link between exercise and creativity has been studied by scientists around the world.
Dr Chong Chen and his team are from Japan’s Yamaguchi University. To find out how different types of physical activity can help us solve problems and think creatively, they referred to 21 past studies from places including the US, the UK, Spain, Sweden, China, India and Japan. The studied exercises included walking, running, cycling, dance and yoga. However, the hardest exercise actually didn’t give the best results.
In fact, Chen and his team found that it was natural walking that almost always had a positive effect on people’s creativity — even if it was just walking inside a room or going up and down some stairs, for as little as three to four minutes. Dance is also good. Most of the studies conducted by Chen’s team found that dance helps significantly with creativity — particularly among adults. However, the results for yoga were unclear. And low-intensity aerobic (有氧的) exercise like cycling was not found to have an effect.
There were some benefits from moderate (适度的) and intense aerobic exercise. But “maximal effort” exercise seemed to have a mostly negative effect. So completely wearing yourself out probably won’t help your creativity!
Chen wrote that his team’s findings could be used in schools and businesses by including short periods of physical activity during the day to encourage creative thinking. It’s not even about keeping fit, Chen says — you just have to move!
“Knowing that just a few minutes of walking, or other low-intensity physical activity, can improve creative thinking should make getting up to move seem more worthwhile, ” he said in an interview.
32.How does the author start the text?( )
A.By quoting theories.
B.By making comparisons.
C.By linking the past and the present.
D.By referring to his own experience.
A problem had ...with the answer.
33.What is paragraph 2 mainly about?( )
A.How the study was conducted.
B.Why the study was carried out.
C.The results of the study on creativity.
D.The types of physical activities in the study.
根据第二段中的Dr Chong Chen ...India and Japan.
34.According to the study, which of the following exercises are more efficient than the others?( )
A.Walking and running. B.Yoga and cycling.
C.Walking and dance. D.Dance and yoga.
In fact, Chen ...to four minutes.和Most of the ...particularly among adults.
35.What is the main purpose of the text?( )
A.To report a science study.
B.To teach people how to exercise.
C.To show the importance of creativity.
D.To clarify some misconceptions about walking.

It can be tough to find the motivation to do an outdoor workout once winter strikes with low temperatures, wind chill, rain and dark nights. However, don’t let the cold weather prevent you from accomplishing your fitness goals. 36.( ).
Dress for the weather.
37.( ). Wind chills can easily go through thinner items of clothes. If your clothes are wet on a rainy day, you’ll have no protection from the icy temperature. So it is crucial to wear a windproof or water-resistant outer layer.
Protect your head and hands.
While only about 10 per cent of your body heat escapes from your head, as opposed to 70 per cent as previously believed, wearing a hat in cold weather is still important. 38.( ). Choose a pair with touchscreen fingers to avoid frequently taking them off and on.
Stay hydrated (含水的).
You may feel like you sweat less in cold weather, but don’t be fooled. You still need to drink up. 39.( ). Stay hydrated by drinking room temperature water before, during and after your workout.
40.( ).
“Imagine a rubber band ... it’s flexible, bendy (易弯曲的) and pulls right back to its shape. Now imagine that same rubber band, but frozen. If you try to pull too hard before it’s unfrozen, it’ll break suddenly,” explains trainer Ashley Wilking. Your muscles are like rubber bands, you need to gradually wake them up to prevent injury. Start to heat up your large muscles with light stretching, jumping jacks and lunges indoors before heading outside.
A.Do active warm-ups
B.Exercise like a bendy rubber band
C.Follow our expert tips to stay fit, warm and motivated this winter
D.Your workout wear should be soft and flexible for you to stretch and exercise
E.Wind chill and rain are key elements to consider for outdoor workouts in winter
F.Your hands are another body part that are likely to feel the chill, so gloves are a must
G.Losing much water increases your risk of injury and will slow down your performance

Protect your head and hands.

My sons, aged 12 and 14, are lucky enough to have been skiing in the French Alps most years since they were young. And if you asked them, or my husband and I, for that 41 , we’d all say these winter trips have been our most 42 times as a family.
It didn’t start 43 , however. When we first put the eldest on skis, on a 44 slope (坡道) in Chamonix when he was three or four, I had to 45 him with pieces of chocolate between each run as his skis “felt funny” on his feet. We 46 it a few years, and tried again when his younger brother was old enough to join in, choosing resorts (胜地) with great 47 for family skiing. Under the guidance of super-friendly ski instructors and thanks to the dog-themed forest fun parks, they both completely 48 the mountains, and we’ve been 49 magical Alpine moments together ever since.
As they’ve got older and gained more confidence in their skiing and 50 in their legs, we’ve loved introducing them to the 51 ski resorts and steeper terrain (地形) at Les Arcs, where they also took great 52 in beating us both on the ski-cross course.

It was another competition day.
A tall official was checking all the athletes. “Number Three. John Fisher.” John nodded while a ripple of goosebumps (一阵鸡皮疙瘩) shot up his backbone. He should be calm as he had trained pretty hard for the race. However, he had a headache and a sense of imbalance from his poor sleep the night before. Scenes of the last competition filled his head, when he had put in a good effort, doing what he thought was enough only to see another man beat him. The bitter taste of loss spread slowly in his mouth even now.
Suddenly, John felt a “man” in black standing beside him, who looked quite familiar. He looked at John and sneered (讥笑), “Hey. You are not good enough. You’re going to fail like in the last competition!” How dare he say that? John angrily punched (拳打) him, who, however, disappeared into thin air. John remembered the early mornings when he was the first to arrive at the training ground, pushing himself through one more set of exercises each time. Determined not to let this negative voice affect him, he took a deep breath and looked ahead.
“Now, everyone, follow me,” the official said and led the group into the arena (运动场). John looked over at the other competitors, each dressed in a similar uniform, well-trained and prepared. John knew he had a tough race ahead of him. The “man” appeared and sneered again “Good luck. You’re going to need it!”
Ignoring the “man” and the competitors, John placed his fingers against the starting line and put his body in position. “What should I do first?” he wondered, All the strategies he had planned the night before were gone. He could feel the eye of the crowd on him and he wasn’t ready.
Bang! John dashed out, but his foot almost slipped.
The “man” in black appeared and congratulated him, too.
Bang! John dashed out, but his foot almost slipped. He quickly regained his balance, his heart pounding in his chest. The adrenaline surged through him, pushing him forward. He focused on the track ahead, blocking out the cheers and jeers of the crowd. His muscles worked in perfect harmony, each stride bringing him closer to the finish line. As he rounded the final bend, he saw the leaders just ahead. With a final burst of speed, he sprinted towards them, his lungs burning and his legs screaming in protest. But he didn’t let up, his determination propelling him forward. To his surprise, he crossed the finish line in second place, just inches behind the winner.
The “man” in black appeared and congratulated him, too. “Well done, John,” he said, his tone no longer sneering but genuinely impressed. “You’ve come a long way. Remember, it’s not about winning every time, it’s about pushing yourself to be better, about facing your fears and rising above them.” John stared at the “man”, realizing he was a figment of his own doubts and insecurities. “Thanks,” he muttered, feeling a sense of relief wash over him. He turned to his coach and teammates, who were cheering him on. For the first time, he felt like he truly belonged. He knew he still had a lot to learn and many more races to run, but today, he had proven to himself that he could compete with the best. And that, he thought, was victory enough.
