One warm afternoon last spring, I was walking in a park.
Near a grassy area, a group of women around 50 years old
caught my eye. They had plastic bags in their hands and
walked slowly through the grass, searching for something. “What
are they doing?” I thought.

Curious, I walked over for a closer look. One woman
looked up and laughed, “See? Wild shepherd’s purse(荠菜)!”
“Shepherd’s purse? Here in the park?” I asked, looking around
in surprise. “Ah, you young guys know nothing about this,” the
woman replied. Then, she moved to a small plant with toothed
leaves just behind me. I looked at the plant and scratched(挠)
my head. Maybe she was right: Young people don’t know much
about any of these plants.
For years, every spring, people have talked a lot on the
Internet about looking for wild plants to eat. Isn’t this a
common thing? But many of us still don’t really know these
plants. Take shepherd’s purse for example. I eat it almost every
spring as wonton fillings(馄饨馅). But without much cooking
or food-shopping experience, how would I know what it looks
like before it’s cut up and cooked?
We’re not robots, and eating shouldn’t feel like just filling
our stomachs without thinking. To make eating a real human
experience, we should sometimes try things ourselves. Instead of
buying pre-made dumplings, we could get meat, shepherd’s
purse, and dumpling wrappers, and then learn to make them by
hand. What about digging for wild plants? It might be fun, but
