The first night was very hard for the players. When it was their turn to
rest, they were too excited to fall asleep at once. After sleeping for a
short time, they had to play again. On the second night, they fell asleep
as soon as they stopped. Some of them had trouble with their feet and
hands, but the only serious problem was the mental one. Each boy was
thinking: Why am I doing this? How can I play any longer? After the
third night, the players knew they could finish the 90 hours. The
basketball on the fourth night was very slow. But in the final hours, the
players got better. For the last few minutes, the players looked as fresh
as when they started.

(2025·云南楚雄高一下期中)A recent study says volunteering can
be good for your health.Could it offer a way through the youth mental
health crisis (危机)?
Kids and teenagers who volunteer aren’t just helping their
community. They might also be helping themselves. That’s according to
new research published in JAMA Network Open in May.It found that
volunteering through school or community groups is connected with better
happiness among teens.
目 录
英语·必修第三册(WY)
Kids who took part in community service were 34% more likely to be
in very good physical health than those who didn’t, the study
found. And those who volunteered were 66% more likely to be considered
doing well in general.Kids aged 12 and older who volunteered were 25%
less likely to have anxiety than those who didn’t.The findings come from
the study data provided by the parents of some 50,000 kids in the United
States aged 6 to 17.About half of those parents reported that their kids did
volunteer work.
目 录
英语·必修第三册(WY)
Parents answered questions about their kids’ health and community-
service activities. But a parent might not know if their child experienced
anxiety. This type of data also can’t prove cause and effect. It can only
uncover links. So it’s not possible to say for sure that volunteering leads
to better mental and physical health. It could be that people in good health
are more likely to have the energy or desire to volunteer.
目 录
英语·必修第三册(WY)
But the data comes at an important time for youth mental health. In
recent years, rates of feeling anxious have risen among young
people.More than 40% of high school students reported experiencing
feelings of sadness or hopelessness. There’s a clear need for effective
mental health resources (资源).Giving back to the community may be
one such resource.
Previous research has also found links between volunteering and
happiness among adults.Serving the community seems to help people feel
a sense of purpose. It makes them feel connected to those around them.
