In 1872, a 12-year-old Chinese boy boarded a ship heading for the USA. He would be away from his parents for the next nine years. This young boy was Zhan Tianyou, who was destined to play a major role in the development of China rail’s roads. Zhan was one of the first 30 boys chosen for the Chinese Educational Mission (CEM), founded by the Qing government to help China develop through education.
Recruiting these boys was not easy. The CEM’s original plan required parents to part with their sons for 15 years—a huge risk when few Chinese had traveled abroad, and many feared foreigners. A friend persuaded Zhan’s father to let him take the CEM test, and Zhan finally joined the group sailing to the USA.
After reaching the US west coast, Zhan and the others traveled by train to east coast schools. On the way, he was amazed by American industrial civilisation, especially the railroads and trains. In Connecticut, he studied at the Seaside Institute for Boys, where he became close to the headmaster’s family. Mrs Northrop, the headmaster’s wife, noticed his talent for maths and encouraged him to study science and engineering—a suggestion that shaped his future.
Zhan did not ignore his studies in the US. He expanded his knowledge of science, took part in research, and graduated top of his class. In high school, he was impressed by the new American railroad system and saddened by China’s limited displays (mostly tea and silk) at a US exposition. Thus, he longed to rid China of the tough situation. These experiences led him to choose civil engineering (focused on railroads) at Yale University. He graduated first in 1881, but the Qing government recalled all CEM students that summer—only Zhan and one other finished college.
Zhan returned to China eager to build railroads. In 1888, he began his work, and later became famous for the Beijing-Zhangjiakou Railway (built across difficult and complex region). Known as “the Father of China’s Railroad,” he served his country for 31 years, improving millions of lives.
24. Why was it hard to recruit boys for the CEM?
A. The trip to the US was too expensive.
B. Parents were unwilling to separate from their sons for long.
C. The Qing government did not support the mission.
D. Boys were not interested in studying abroad.
25. What influenced Zhan to choose civil engineering as his major?
A. His interest in American railroads and desire to help China.
B. Mrs Northrop’s suggestion to study science.
C. His excellent performance in maths at the Seaside Institute.
D. The limited displays of Chinese products at the US exposition.
26. What can we learn about Zhan from the text?
A. He spent 15 years in the US as planned.
B. He was the only CEM student to finish college.
C. He built the Beijing-Zhangjiakou Railway in 1888.
D. He made great contributions to China’s railroad development.
27. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To explain the role of the CEM in China’s development.
B. To describe Zhan Tianyou’s experiences and achievements.
C. To compare American and Chinese railroads in the 1800s.
D. To introduce the history of China’s first railroad.

AI has made its way into almost every field, and according to Abta’s latest Holiday Habits report, the travel industry is no exception. The rate of people using AI to get some travel ideas has doubled in the past 12 months, up to 8 percent from 4 percent.
The survey of 2,001 people also showed that younger generations are leading the way in using AI. The largest age group is 25- to 34-year-olds, with 18 percent looking for travel ideas through AI. That number drops to 13 percent for 18-to 24-year-olds. And only 3 percent of 55-to 64-year-olds are using AI for holiday tips.
However, AI has not taken over just yet when it comes to researching trips, as Internet searches (48 percent) and recommendations from friends and family (41 percent) still remain the most common ways to choose where to go. In fact, people taking more traditional routes, such as looking through holiday brochures (手册), still take up 25 percent.
Abta says that AI will continue to grow when it comes to trip planning. Holidaymakers have already shown a level of trust in AI for making travel decisions. 43 percent people in the survey said they would be confident to some degree in letting an AI tool plan their holiday, with this number dropping to just 38 percent letting the tool book their trip for them.
Travel industry leaders state that AI will continue to be a big part of what customers do before they make a travel decision. According to them, AI will greatly influence the travel industry, but travellers still want to communicate with a travel company before booking trips. Travel companies will not vanish anytime soon, because of that group of customers who think it’s necessary to go in and look someone in the eye when they’re booking something.
28. How does the author develop paragraph 2?
A. By using examples. B. By comparing AI tools.
C. By explaining rules. D. By presenting numbers.
29. What is the most common way for people to make travel plans?
A. Depending on AI tools. B. Searching the Internet.
C. Asking for others’ advice. D. Reading the holiday advertisements.
30. What does the underlined word “vanish” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Enlarge. B. Disappear. C. Succeed. D. Recover.
31. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. The rising role of AI in travel planning.
B. The rapid development of AI tools.
C. The younger generations’ preference for AI.
D. The great challenges faced by travel companies.

If you take a walk through a Pittsburgh city park, you might come across a group of goats eating poison ivy, one type of plants harmful to the ecosystem. It is part of an experiment.
By eating a lot of plants, goats greatly cut down the plants that need to be treated with herbicides (除草剂). Herbicides are traditionally used to clear out unwanted plants, but some substance in it is reported to lead to cancer — a serious illness. Herbicides can remain in the soil and on plants, and during rain, they are washed into streams and rivers, further polluting the ecosystem.
There’s a need for goats all across the U.S., including California and New Mexico, where they help in wildfire prevention. Goats are sure-footed, and they enjoy climbing up and getting to the plants that are difficult for humans to clear away. They prefer woody plants, soft shoots and bushes (灌木丛) compared with other plant-eaters, such as cows, who are happy with grasses and low-lying plants. This makes goats perfect for clearing areas of high-growing woody plants that strengthen wildfires.
However, there are challenges in using goats. Their hairs are thin, which means they couldn’t work outside in cold winter. Goats can break seeds of harmful plants down in their stomachs, so they don’t spread the plants they’re eating, but this also makes them easy to suffer from stomach illnesses.
But when you think about the bigger picture, these problems are just small. One good thing that came from Pittsburgh’s goat experiment was the public interest it received. After the experiment finished, many other cities wanted to know how they could start a similar project. People, it turns out, also like goats. Park visitors love seeing the goats at work. Their presence brings a lot of joy and adds to the park experience!
32. Why are goats used in some city parks in the U.S.?
A. To study their eating habits. B. To cut down the costs on herbicides.
C. To clear harmful plants in a natural way. D. To attract more tourists to visit the parks.
33. What can we infer about goats from paragraph 3?
A. They are no better at climbing than cows.
B. They prefer low-lying plants to woody bushes.
C. They are mainly raised in California and New Mexico.
D. They help prevent wildfires by eating specific plants.
34. What is the public’s attitude towards the goat project?
A. Positive. B. Worried. C. Uncaring. D. Unclear.
35. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A. The Disadvantages of Using Herbicides in Parks
B. Different Ways to Prevent Wildfires Across the U.S.
C. How Goats Help Protect the Ecosystem in the U.S.
D. How Pittsburgh’s Park Experiment Was Carried Out

Your bedroom should feel like a place for rest and relaxation. But if it often stresses you out, disorder and unnecessary messes might be the reason. Changing your habits to keep your bedroom tidier may seem challenging. _____36_____
Make tidying part of your daily routine.
You probably have a nightly routine that includes skincare and brushing your teeth. So, why not add a little tidying to it? Start and end your day with this increased habit. When you get out of bed, spend five minutes picking up things from the floor. ____37____ Put the things where they should be.
____38____
Make your bed each morning at once for a tidier bedroom. But too much bedding and accessories (配饰) can make the task feel like more of a chore. If you’re not a fan of using a top sheet, set it aside. Then, give up extra pillows that end up on the floor and add to messes.
Plan your cleaning periods.
It’s true that we all have busy schedules. ____39____ So, you need a plan. First, for smaller tasks like tidying up the table at your bedside, which just takes a few minutes, you can do them as soon as you get up. For larger organizing tasks, though, like sorting out your dresser, it’s better to spare some time on the weekend.
Stop piling (堆) clothes on the floor.
Do you have piles of clothing on your bedroom floor or a chair instead of being put away in your closet or drawers? This not only looks messy but also makes your space feel more uncomfortable. ____40____ Simply having a special place for dirty clothes can make a great difference.
A. Practice different skills.
B. Cut down on your bedding.
C. But it’s actually easier than you think.
D. Do the same before going to bed in the night.

When I was twelve, my grandfather gave me a small, unimpressive-looking seed. “Plant it,” he said, “but know that it will take years to grow into what it is meant to be.” I was ___41___ at first, expecting quick results like the sunflowers I’d grown the summer before. I planted it in a corner of the garden and ___42___ it daily.
Weeks passed, then months. Nothing appeared above the soil. I began to feel ___43___. “Maybe it’s dead,” I told my grandfather. He simply smiled and said, “Some things require faith and ___44___.” Unwillingly, I continued to water the empty patch of earth.
A year later, a tiny green shoot finally appeared. It grew slowly — painfully slowly. During my high school years, that plant became a ___45___ of my own growth. There were times I wanted to give up on both the plant and myself, especially when ___46___ seemed overwhelming. But remembering my grandfather’s words, I insist on overcoming them.
Five years after planting, it finally bloomed. The sight took my breath away: a magnificent tree peony(牡丹)with flowers as large as dinner plates, strikingly brilliant in color. All those years of ___47___ were rewarded in that spectacular display.
My grandfather passed away the following spring, but he left me with more than just a beautiful plant. True growth happens unseen, beneath the surface, where roots grow deep and strong.
Today, whenever I face challenges that test my patience, I remember that ___50___. The lesson wasn’t really about gardening; it was about learning to trust the process, to value slow development, and to understand that some of life’s most beautiful ___51___ come not from instant pleasure, but from patient nurturing(培养).
The peony still blooms every spring, a living ___52___ of my grandfather’s wisdom. And now, when my own children become ___53___ with their own slow progress, I tell them the story of the seed. I see the same feeling in their eyes that I once had — the___54___for quick results. But I also see understanding and acceptance begin to ___55___ as they learn that some things are worth waiting for.

Benjamin was a high school student who lived with his grandma. His dad had to travel a lot for work, so he was rarely at home. Grandma was the one who woke Benjamin up every morning, made his favorite breakfast, and listened to him talk about school life after dinner. Benjamin loved Grandma very much, and she was his most important person.
One morning during the summer vacation, Grandma suddenly felt very weak. She tried to stand up but fell back on the sofa. Benjamin was scared. He quickly called his dad. When his dad arrived, he carried Grandma to the car and rushed to the hospital. The doctor said Grandma needed to stay in the hospital for a few days to get better. His dad filled out all the hospital forms and stayed with them until evening.
Just then, his dad’s phone rang. It was his boss. The boss said there was an important project to discuss, and his dad had to go to another city right away. His dad looked at Grandma in the hospital bed, then at Benjamin. He frowned (皱眉) and said, “I don’t know what to do. I need to take care of your grandma, but I can’t lose my job either.” Benjamin saw the worry in his dad’s eyes. He took a deep breath and said, “Dad, let me take care of Grandma. I can bring her meals, help her walk, and call the nurse if she needs anything. I’ll also read some books in the hospital.”
At first, his dad didn’t agree. He said, “You’ re still in high school. It’s too hard for you.” But Benjamin kept trying to persuade him. “Dad, I’m not a little kid anymore. I can do this. And if there’s a problem, I’ll call you right away,” After talking for a long time, his dad finally nodded. He patted Benjamin’s shoulder and said, “Okay, but you must tell me everything every day.”

第四部分 写作
小作文:(15分)
It’s well-known to us that the electric bike is becoming more and more popular with/among people, but at the same time a lot of problems appear with it.
Some people are in favor of it. The reasons are as follows. First of all, riding electric bike is not only energy-saving but also environmental friendly. Besides, it is very economical and convenient for people to use, but not as expensive as a motor bike or car. However/On the contrary, other people hold different idea. They think that the electric bike is dangerous, for there is no traffic limitation on it in our country. What’s worse/ On the other hand, many people ride it too fast and don’t follow the traffic rules, which leads to terrible accidents sometimes.
As far as I am concerned, I agree with the second/latter opinion. Although the electric bike is fast and convenient, it’s not safe, especially for us senior students to go to school by it.
读后续写:(25分)
Then, Benjamin looked after his grandma with great care. He bought fresh milk from the shop near the hospital, and then took it to Grandma. He helped Grandma sit up and fed her slowly. When Grandma felt bored, he read storybooks to her —— they were the same books. Grandma used to read to him when he was little. In the afternoon, he read his books on the chair next to the bed. Whenever Grandma wanted to walk around, he held her arm carefully to keep her steady. The nurses all praised Benjamin for being a good boy.
After seven days, Grandma felt much better, and dad came back to the hospital. When dad saw Grandma smiling and Benjamin helping her fold clothes, a warm current welled up in his heart and his eyes grew misty. He walked over and hugged Benjamin tightly. “Thank you, my boy. You did such a great job.” With a big smile spreading across his face, Benjamin said softly ,“It’s what I should do. Grandma takes care of me every day, so I want to take care of her too.” That week, Benjamin learned that being brave isn’t about not being scared; it’s about doing what needs to be done even when it’s hard.
读后续写分析:

2. M: Your husband likes watching soccer so much that he’s almost like a lover of it.

3. W: Did you hear that Helen got that modeling job? She’s going to be walking down the catwalk.
M: Wow, that’s great. All that walking practice really paid off. And for once, she won’t be complaining about being so tall.
4. M: I threw out the cake that was on the table. You shouldn’t leave food out for so long. It was green.
W: Oh, no, you shouldn’t have thrown that out. Ask me next time, it wasn’t bad. It was a vegetable cake.
5. W: I’m sorry, but I need to return this hamburger. It’s totally raw in the middle.
M: Oh, I do apologize, madam. I’ll have the cooks make you a new one right away.

M: How about cha-cha?
W: To tell the truth, I don’t like it.
M: Really? You must like tango, right?
W: Oh, it’s really beautiful, but I just can’t dance it well.
M: Don’t be so modest. I’m sure you can dance it very well. Let’s dance it now.
W: OK, I’ll have a try.
M: Oh, you dance it so well.

In 1872,a 12-year-old Chinese boy boarded a ship heading for the USA.He would be away from his parents for the
next nine years. This young boy was Zhan Tianyou, who was destined to play a major role in the development of China
rail's roads.Zhan was one of the first 30 boys chosen for the Chinese Educational Mission (CEM),founded by the Qing
government to help China develop through education.
Recruiting these boys was not easy. The CEM's original plan required parents to part with their sons for 15 years-a
huge risk when few Chinese had traveled abroad, and many feared foreigners.A friend persuaded Zhan's father to let him
take the CEM test, and Zhan finally joined the group sailing to the USA.
After reaching the US west coast,Zhan and the others traveled by train to east coast schools. On the way,he was
amazed by American industrial civilisation, especially the railroads and trains. In Connecticut,he studied at the Seaside
Institute for Boys,where he became close to the headmaster's family.Mrs Northrop,the headmaster's wife,noticed his
talent for maths and encouraged him to study science and engineering-a suggestion that shaped his future.
Zhan did not ignore his studies in the US.He expanded his knowledge of science, took part in research, and graduated
top of his class. In high school,he was impressed by the new American railroad system and saddened by China's limited
displays (mostly tea and silk)at a US exposition. Thus,he longed to rid China of the tough situation. These experiences led
him to choose civil engineering (focused on railroads)at Yale University. He graduated first in 1881,but the Qing
government recalled all CEM students that summer-only Zhan and one other finished college.
Zhan returned to China eager to build railroads. In 1888,he began his work, and later became famous for the
Beijing-Zhangjiakou Railway (built across difficult and complex region).Known as "the Father of China's Railroad,"he
served his country for 31 years, improving millions of lives.
24.Why was it hard to recruit boys for the CEM?

B.Parents were unwilling to separate from their sons for long.
C.The Qing government did not support the mission.

B.Mrs Northrop's suggestion to study science.

D.The limited displays of Chinese products at the US exposition.
26.What can we learn about Zhan from the text?

B.He was the only CEM student to finish college.
C.He built the Beijing-Zhangjiakou Railway in 1888

AI has made its way into almost every field, and according to abta's latest Holiday Habits report, the travel industry is
no exception. The rate of people using AI to get some travel ideas has doubled in the past 12 months,up to 8 percent from 4
percent.
The survey of 2,001 people also showed that younger generations are leading the way in using AI.The largest age
group is 25-to 34-year-olds,with 18 percent looking for travel ideas through AI.That number drops to 13 percent for 18-to
24-year-olds.And only 3 percent of 55-to 64-year-olds are using AI for holiday tips.
However,AI has not taken over just yet when it comes to researching trips,as Internet searches (48 percent)and
recommendations from friends and family (41 percent)still remain the most common ways to choose where to go.In fact,
people taking more traditional routes, such as looking through holiday brochures(),still take up 25 percent.
Abta says that AI will continue to grow when it comes to trip planning.Holidaymakers have already shown a level of
trust in AI for making travel decisions.43 percent people in the survey said they would be confident to some degree in
letting an AI tool plan their holiday, with this number dropping to just 38 percent letting the tool book their trip for them
Travel industry leaders state that al will continue to be a big part of what customers do before they make a travel
decision.According to them,AI will greatly influence the travel industry, but travellers still want to communicate with a
travel company before booking trips.Travel companies will not vanish anytime soon, because of that group of customers
who think it's necessary to go in and look someone in the eye when they're booking something.

B.By comparing AI tools.
C.By explaining rules.

30.What does the underlined word"vanish"in the last paragraph probably mean?
A.Enlarge.
B.Disappear.
C.Succeed.
D.Recover.
31.What does the text mainly talk about?

If you take a walk through a Pittsburgh city park, you might come across a group of goats eating poison ivy,one type
of plants harmful to the ecosystem. It is part of an experiment.
By eating a lot of plants, goats greatly cut down the plants that need to be treated with herbicides ()Herbicides
are traditionally used to clear out unwanted plants, but some substance in it is reported to lead to cancer-a serious illness.
Herbicides can remain in the soil and on plants, and during rain, they are washed into streams and rivers, further polluting
the ecosy stem.
There's a need for goats all across the U.S.,including California and New Mexico, where they help in wildfire
prevention.Goats are sure-footed,and they enjoy climbing up and getting to the plants that are difficult for humans to clear
away. They prefer woody plants, soft shoots and bushes (compared with other plant-eaters,such as cows, who are
happy with grasses and low-lying plants. This makes goats perfect for clearing areas of high-growing woody plants that
strengthen wildfires.
However, there are challenges in using goats.Their hairs are thin, which means they couldn't work outside in cold
winter.Goats can break seeds of harmful plants down in their stomachs,so they don't spread the plants they're eating, but
this also makes them easy to suffer from stomach illnesses.
But when you think about the bigger picture, these problems are just small. One good thing that came from
Pittsburgh's goat experiment was the public interest it received. After the experiment finished, many other cities wanted to
know how they could start a similar project.People,it turns out, also like goats.Park visitors love seeing the goats at work.
Their presence brings a lot of joy and adds to the park experience!
32.Why are goats used in some city parks in the U.S.?
A.To study their eating habits.
B.To cut down the costs on herbicides
C.To clear harmful plants in a natural way.
D.To attract more tourists to visit the parks.
