Ma Junhe, a 14-year-old student from Zhengzhou,
Henan Province, recently made a telescope. Although the
telescope only cost 70 yuan to make, it helped him to
see the craters(坑洞) on the moon.
His interest in physics and space inspired him to create this telescope.
After learning about Newtonian Reflector Telescopes (牛顿式反射望远镜)
in physics class, he decided to make one himself.#2
Passage 4[2025高新一中四模]
a telescope
16
He didn't have a lot of money to put his idea into practice, so he
felt a little sad. But he didn't give up. He thought to himself, “If I am
creative enough, I can find the materials.” He bought lenses online, and
used recycled materials for the rest. “I used an old plastic pipe(管) for
the lens cone, and it was held by my drum stand,” Ma said.
Ma faced many challenges along the way. First, he used cardboard
to make a lens cone, as taught in class, but it didn't work well. At that
time, he was even disappointed with himself. With his teacher's advice
17
and help, he used a plastic pipe instead. When he set up the eyepiece,
which was much smaller than the pipe's opening, he had to try many
times to make sure it fit and could be changed easily.
After failing 10 times, Ma finally succeeded. His telescope can magnify
90 times, allowing him to see the moon's craters. This is more powerful
than many commonly used telescopes, which usually have a magnification
of 20 to 50 times.
“Seeing the moon's craters through my telescope made me feel so
excited and proud,” said Ma. “With enough effort, even with little money,
anyone can create something amazing.”#6

Passage 5
Many kids don't like to eat vegetables. What is the best way to get
kids to eat vegetables? Well, a school in California has found the answer:
Start a programme to make them grow their own vegetables at school.
The Edible Schoolyard(可食校园) at the Martin Luther King Junior Middle
School in Berkeley has been a place for students to enjoy growing, cooking
and eating vegetables since the programme was started.#1
21
Alice Waters came up with the programme. She hoped to develop a
new way to teach children about healthy eating. “We have a huge problem
of bad eating habits in the United States, and teaching about healthy
eating cannot just be left to parents,” Waters said.
She tells us how it works. “In the Edible Schoolyard, there is a garden
and a kitchen classroom. Students are the keepers of the garden. They
plant and care for the garden. In the kitchen classroom, they learn to cook
and eat what they have grown themselves.”#1.1.1
22
Over their three years, a student will have 60 classes in the programme.
The students come to the garden with their science teacher and they are
brought to the kitchen by their humanities(人文学科) teacher.
“If your kids always complain about eating carrots, they may feel
different after picking some carrots from the ground with their own hands.
Some personal participation(参与) might make them love vegetables,” said
Waters.#1.1.3

Passage 6
When it comes to warm-weather activities that are good for your health,
you probably think of walking, hiking or running. But there's another beloved
activity—gardening.
A busy day in the garden can be a good form of exercise. It is
helpful for your physical health. People breathe deeper when they are
outside. As people breathe deeper, the oxygen(氧气) level in their blood
slowly increases, making them feel refreshed.
27
Spending time outdoors has been shown to help lift spirits and lower
levels of stress(压力). For example, I would spend an hour or so in my
garden after a working day in the hospital. I find that pulling weeds(杂草)
can calm me down after a long day. It provides me with the chance to
slow down, plan or work out a problem in my mind.
Gardening can also bring people together and make social connections
stronger. The gardening community is rich with people willing to share
their knowledge, time and sometimes plants with new
gardeners. Many gardening friendships begin with celebrating a success or
regretting a gardening mistake. The friendships that I've made have been
the best gift that gardening has given me. During the spring, my friends
and neighbors plan our vegetable gardens together. We discuss what works
well or needs to be improved from last year. In summer, we share flowers
with each other. In fall, we host a big party to enjoy the fruits or vegetables
together. These activities improve the joy we get out of the garden and
bring us closer together.#1.3
