Squeaky wasn’t expected to do much around the house, but she was responsible for looking after her sister Louise, who was intellectually disabled. People in their Harlem neighborhood often made fun of Louise, but Squeaky didn’t hesitate to stand up for her. As Squeaky was an incredibly fast runner, she could just run away if things got too heated. In fact, Squeak y won many races she competed in, sometimes losing to her classmate and friend, Gretchen. These days, Squeaky and Gretchen were talking about who of them would win in the coming May Day race.
Squeaky often ran around the neighborhood, training for races and performing breathing exercises, and Louise usually went together. Louise often caused trouble in public, drawing the anger of neighbors to whom Squeaky must apologize. But Squeaky didn’t mind as long as Louise didn’t interfere (干扰) with her training.
Presently, Squeaky was practicing running in the neighborhood with Louise when she spotted Gretchen running towards them. When they came close, they all stopped. Gretchen looked at Louise in curiosity, which was taken as a provocation by Squeaky, who stepped forward in defense. Gretchen stepped back and smiled kindly.Relieved, Squeaky introduced Louise to Gretchen and explained why she was defensive.
Gretchen laughed, saying she was curious because she was surprised that Louise should be able to run as fast as Squeaky. “Is she also training for the May Day race?” Gretchen asked.
Squeaky’s eyes lit up. “Why haven’t I ever thought of this?” she thought. Gretchen’s words reminded her of an idea she had never thought of. “I decide to quit running and coach Louise instead. I have many awards, but Louise has nothing,” she told Gretchen. Gretchen was almost touched to tears by Squeaky’s consideration for her sister. “Can I work together with you?” Gretchen asked with enthusiasm. The two friends looked at each other in agreement.

Passage 1

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was a sunny autumn morning during the break at Sunshine High School. The passages were filled with sounds of the students chatting and laughing cheerfully. In a classroom on the first floor, some of the freshmen were catching up on their homework, while others were sharing stories about their weekends.
Among them were Alex, a tall and well-built boy crazy about fitness. He was tidying up the teacher’s desk in the front of the classroom. Alex was a popular fellow, always wearing a big smile on his face and ready to help others. Alex’s deskmate Ben was busy preparing for his favourite literature class to be given by their headteacher Ms Eyre. Ben was a newcomer who had just joined the class a week before. He had suffered from a rare condition that led to his extremely limited physical strength, a thin body and reliance on a wheelchair for mobility. Ben usually left his wheelchair outside classrooms during school due to the restricted room capacity. Despite his disability, his friendly nature and optimistic attitude to life quickly endeared him to his new classmates.
Every student was enjoying their brief break when suddenly the ground started to shake violently, sending almost all the books and learning tools flying off the desks. Next, the familiar sound of earthquake alarms rang loudly throughout the school. “Earthquake! Take cover under the desks!” shouted Alex. Thanks to the regular emergency drills (演练) by the school, the students didn’t panic but immediately sprang into action. They quickly pushed away their chairs and hid under the desks, just as they had been taught and practiced many times.
However, Ben, who had never experienced such a disaster, was terribly frightened and at a loss what to do. Seated on his chair and holding on to the edge of his desk, he was trembling along with the ground, his face turning deadly pale. Aware of Ben’s situation, Alex, rose to his feet from under the teacher’s desk.

Passage 2
(24-25高二下·山东潍坊·期中)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Charlie became a street boy after his parents died in an accident. When I found him, he was 13, living in a large box on the roadside. He was hungry, dirty, full of fear and caution towards strangers. The only belongings he had was a piece of worn-out cover of The Sorcerer’s Stone. “You into Harry Potter?” I asked. “I have the entire book at home”, I added, hoping he’d understand my meaning. Instead he looked at me doubtfully. I told him that I was a lawyer and I just wanted to help. Maybe he’d like somewhere warm to stay, at least for a couple of days. He kept silent. Finally, after a full minute or so, he nodded.
My wife Bev was a lawyer too and she couldn’t have kids. When she saw the poor child, she frowned and gave Charlie a mother-like care. She filled his hungry stomach, led him to the bathroom with her nephew’s clothes for him to change into, and washed his clothes while he was getting cleaned up. I put the The Sorcerer’s Stone on the table in the living room, but Charlie was so tired that he went to sleep after the bath.
The next morning, I found he was reading The Sorcerer’s Stone in the living room. After breakfast, he said he would leave for his aunt in Denver. Looking at him, I really didn’t believe there was an aunt. Why was he so anxious to get back on the road? Whatever his motivation, he needed supplies.
So we took out a hiking backpack. Bev included another of her nephew’s clothes, a hat and a pair of ski gloves. I gave him two of my Harry Potter books: The Sorcerer’s Stone and The Chamber Of Secrets. “And now for the best part,” I said, handing Charlie an envelope. “There’s eight-hundred dollars in there.” His head suddenly raised up and he stared at me, wide-eyed. “That should get you to wherever you need to go,” I said. Once he got over his initial shock, he nodded and said to me in a quiet voice, “Thanks.” Though refused at first, I drove him to the bus station and bought the ticket for him.

Passage 3
(24-25高二下·山东临沂·期中)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was so caught up in my busy work life that I only focused on my own routines. Every day, I was trapped in a self-centered bubble, rushing from one task to another, completely unaware of the beauty that could exist between people.
That fateful day at the supermarket changed everything. I stood there, mortified, as the clerk informed me that I was $ 12 over what I had on me. Panic started to set in as I realized I might have to leave some of the essential items behind. I began to remove items from the bags, feeling embarrassed and a bit flustered.
Just then, another shopper, a middle-aged man with kind eyes, stepped forward and handed me a $20 bill. “Please don’t put yourself out, ” I told him, trying to decline his generous offer. “Let me tell you a story, ” he said, his voice soft yet carrying a weight of emotion. “My mother is in the hospital with cancer. I visit her every day and bring her flowers. I went this morning, and she got mad at me for spending my money on more flowers. She demanded that I do something else with that money. So, here, please accept this. It is my mother’s flowers. ”
I was stunned by his kindness and the depth of his story. I stared at him in disbelief for a moment. Then I thanked him profusely and accepted the money, feeling a mix of gratitude and guilt.
As I left the store, I couldn’t stop thinking about the man and his mother. I thought about the selflessness of his act, sacrificing his intended gift for his sick mother to help a stranger in need. I’ve always believed in helping others, and this moment reminded me why it’s so important. It wasn’t just about the money; it was about the connection.
The next day, I went to the hospital where the man’s mother was staying. I brought a small bouquet of flowers and asked the receptionist for her room number. When I entered the room, I saw an elderly woman lying in bed, her face pale but her eyes full of warmth. I introduced myself and told her about her son’s act of kindness.

Emma stood frozen in front of the broken terrarium (生物育养箱), her hands shaking uncontrollably. The once-perfect setup for her bean plant experiment now lay in chaos. That was what she was going to exhibit at the school science fair next week.
For weeks, she had closely observed her bean plants in natural light, carefully noting how their leaves reached for the sun and their stems gradually bent towards the warmth. She filled her notebook with details of the bean plants’ growth and daily weather impacts. She also took many pictures to show their growth process.
The disaster struck during her evening check. As she reached to adjust one bean plant which was leaning to one side, her elbow hit the glass wall. Suddenly, the terrarium tipped over. Soil and equipment fell to the floor. “Only ten days left for the science fair! The time is killing me. There’s no way I can finish this in such a short time!” she murmured in a desperate tonc, with tears welling up in her eyes.
The next day, Emma came to school early and sat sobbing (啜泣) softly in the classroom. That’s where her best friend Lily found her. Hearing what happened, she hugged Emma and comforted her. “We’ll fix this,” she said firmly, wiping away Emma’s tears. “Remember in bio class when we learned red light can speed up plant growth? Let’s try that!”
Just then, Mr. Carter, their biology teacher, walked into the classroom and overheard their conversation. “You’re right,” he said, joining them. “Red light can accelerate growth, but it needs constant monitoring. I’ve got extra grow lamps in the storage room. I’ll bring them to help.” He brought over lamps together with a new terrarium and give them detailed instructions on setup. “Check the plants daily for the soil conditions and signs of growth. If you have any issues, let me know right away. Good luck!” Mr. Carter added before leaving.

It was a bright and sunny morning at Greenfield High School, and the annual sports day was in full swing. The atmosphere was electric, with students cheering, banners waving, and the smell of popcorn filling the air. But all eyes were on the final event of the day — the 400-meter race.
Among the participants was Mia, a quiet but determined girl from Class 10B.Mia wasn’t the fastest runner in school, nor was she the most athletic. In fact, she only joined the track team a few months ago after her best friend, Emma, convinced her to give it a try. “You’ve got heart, Mia,” Emma had said. “That’s all you need.”
As Mia stood at the starting line, her heart pounded. She glanced at her competitors — tall, confident, and experienced runners who had won countless medals. Mia tightened her shoelaces and took a deep breath. She reminded herself of the hours she had spent training, the early mornings, and the blisters (水疱) on her feet. She wasn’t here to win; she was here to prove to herself that she could finish the race.
The starting gun fired, and the runners shot off like arrows. Mia started strong but soon found herself lagging behind. By the halfway mark, she was in last place. Mia felt as if a heavy weight had settled on her shoulders. She couldn’t bring himself to look at the crowd. As cheers began to fade, doubt crept into her mind. “Maybe I should just stop, No one will notice.” she thought.

Sally’s birthday was approaching, and the excitement that usually filled her heart was now replaced with disappointment and stress. Turning eleven was a big deal, and she had always celebrated it with a grand party surrounded by her friends. However, this year was different. The burden of excessive homework and her parents’ struggling business weighed heavily on her, forcing Sally to make the difficult decision of not having a birthday party, even though it was an event she enjoyed dearly every year.
One day, during break, her best friend, Jane, with a curious look in her eyes, approached. “Are you going to have a birthday party this year?” Jane asked, sensing Sally’s sadness.
“No,” Sally sighed and replied sadly, “There’s just too much going on and my parents are going through financial difficulties.”
She smiled weakly, trying to conceal her immense disappointment and stress, but Jane saw through her pretence (假装) easily. Jane nodded thoughtfully and did not say anything. After the break, Sally saw her talking to one of their classmates, Sarah, secretively. Curious, Sally went over to them, but as soon as Jane saw her, she quickly walked away. Sally was startled by Jane’s strange actions and turned towards Sarah.
“What did she say?” Sally asked.
However, Sarah simply shrugged (耸肩) and walked away with Jane, leaving Sally standing there, feeling left out and anxious.
“What is happening?” Sally wondered anxiously, “Are they keeping something from me?”
As Sally’s birthday drew nearer, Jane was often found chatting softly with her other classmates. Whenever Sally went over to them, they would just walk away or tell her that they were talking about a secret which Sally was not allowed to know. “Jane has never kept secrets from me before.” Sally thought. Her heart sank. Even her friends were distancing themselves from her! She swung between confusion and sadness with each passing moment, desperately trying to figure out what was happening. Why were her friends distancing themselves from her? And what were they hiding?

When my thirteenth birthday came around, I didn’t tell it to anyone and made no plans. “What do you want to do for your birthday?” my mother asked. “Nothing,” I said. My mother then asked whether I wanted to invite any friends over. I shook my head and explained I hadn’t made any friends in the new town. My family had just moved to the new town and I had studied in a new school there for several weeks. I didn’t have much expectation for my thirteenth birthday.
Finally, this day came. That evening, my mother, who worked hard in a supermarket, bought me a big birthday cake and a present. The present was inside one big golden box. The card read “Love from Mom and Dad”, but I knew my dad had nothing to do with it. In fact, he was hardly ever home. Like most nights, he was still working at the hospital.
I reached over for the big box on the kitchen table, and when I shook it, I knew there were clothes inside. My mom looked at me excitedly, wanting to give me a surprise. I thought to myself, “Maybe this birthday won’t be so bad.” I hoped that this package would contain some wonderful clothes to help me fit in at the new school. I opened the box and pulled out a pair of orange pants and a matching orange shirt. Right away, I was upset! I thought the color was unattractive. I had never owned anything orange in my life and wasn’t about to start then.
I smiled weakly. “Wow, Mom!” I faked (假装) a happy smile. But my mother found I was faking a smile. “You don’t like them,” she said. I lied, “No, I do. I really like the clothes.” But actually I didn’t want to try them on at all. I had never received a gift so unattractive. “If you don’t like them, I’ll take them back,” she said a little angrily.

I had appendicitis (阑尾炎) when I was twelve. It ended up getting serious, and I was in the hospital for the better part of the summer. For the first week or so, I was so miserable that I didn’t really do anything but sleep, but as I started feeling better, I wanted to keep occupied. I read too quickly for my mom to keep me in books and wasn’t really interested in television even then, so my mom was desperate.
This being the early 2000s, she eventually hit on one of the most popular trends of the time: bead (珠子) keychains. She bought me some threads, a bag of beads in every color of the rainbow and a book that taught me how to make all different types of animals. I mastered the making process of it pretty quickly, and it kept me happily engaged in between books.
One day, one of the nurses came in and saw me working on one and exclaimed over how cute it was. She was one of my favorite nurses, so I immediately offered her one, and she immediately attached it to her ID badge (徽章). A nursing assistant asked for one, so I gave him one too, and then my doctor… and then it seemed like everyone wanted one!
I started spending most of my time making lizards (蜥蜴), snakes, and a turtle in the color combinations requested. My mom said she felt bad that it was turning from a hobby into a chore, but I genuinely enjoyed it and wanted to make something for everybody who’d been so nice to me when I was sick.
What I didn’t find out until some time later was that one of the officers supervising the hospital saw one of my nurses and criticized her for the lizard hanging on her badge and the officer said that the lizard was“ out of uniform” and therefore against regulations.

Jessica walked in her new university, watching the leaves dancing in the autumn wind. The falling leaves reminded her that she failed to be admitted into her dream university. Jessica felt a heaviness in her heart. She had been struggling with the new college life. The unfamiliar campus layout always made her get lost on the way to classes. Worse still, she found it hard to engage with the professors’ lectures and often felt left behind in class discussions. The cafeteria food was unappetizing, and the noisy dormitory environment at night prevented her from getting a good sleep. She often questioned whether she could truly fit in and find her place in this new college environment.
To seek comfort, she decided to visit her grandmother today, hoping to find answers in her calm presence. Jessica’s grandmother, with gentle wisdom, always seemed to have a great understanding of things that Jessica struggled to grasp.
As Jessica entered her grandmother’s warm living room, she found her sitting in her favorite armchair, knitting (编织) a scarf. The rhythmic click of the needles created a comforting tune that filled the room. Her grandmother looked up, her eyes shining with warmth and understanding.
“Jessica, my dear,” she greeted in a soft voice. “What brings you here today?”
Jessica hesitated, struggling to find the right words. “Grandma, I’ve been thinking a lot about my failure to get the offer to my dream university. I feel lost, like I’m just floating without purpose. I am puzzled about the meaning of life.”
Her grandmother paused her knitting, the needles held steady in mid-air, and gave Jessica a thoughtful smile. “Ah, the age-old question,” she said. “Look at my process of knitting with this yarn (纱线) and needles. It starts with a simple string of cotton, but with time and effort, it becomes beautiful and unique fabrics.”
Interested, Jessica settled into the chair opposite her grandmother. She watched as grandma continued her knitting, each movement intentional and purposeful. The scarf grew longer.
“Every movement seems in chaos, but step back, and you’ll see the pattern,” her grandmother added.

Passage 1
(24-25高二下·山东省部分学校联考·期中)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When my brother Jake left for college, gone was the laughter that once filled our home. Jake wasn’t just my brother — he was my best friend and the one who always knew how to pull me out of my darkest moods. His absence left a huge hole in my life, and no amount of video calls or texts could fill it. Then came the news: Marco, an exchange student from Italy, would be staying in Jake’s room.
“Marco? In Jake’s room?” I asked, my voice trembling. “But that’s his space.” My mom, trying to comfort me, said, “Marco’s excited to be here. You might even learn something new.” I wasn’t convinced. The idea felt like a betrayal (背叛), as if we were replacing Jake.
When Marco arrived, he was nothing like I had expected. He was tall, with dark curly hair and a confident smile that seemed to light up the room. He greeted me with a cheerful “Hello!” and immediately started unpacking his things. I stood awkwardly in the doorway, watching as he transformed Jake’s room into his own space. Overwhelmed (不知所措的), I whispered a quick “Hi” and returned to my room.
The first few days were tense. Marco, chatting with my parents about Naples, tried to include me, but I kept my distance. One evening, I overheard him talking about how much he missed playing soccer with his friends back home. “It’s not just a game,” he said. “It’s a way of life.” I rolled my eyes.
Then, one Saturday afternoon, everything changed. My parents had to attend a wedding out of town, leaving Marco and me in the house. I busied myself with my own things in my room, trying to avoid any interaction. But around midday, Marco knocked on my door. “Hey, I’m going to play some soccer in the backyard. Want to join me?” he asked. I hesitated. Soccer had never been my thing — I was more of a basketball person. But the thought of sitting alone in my room all day didn’t sound appealing either.

The old workshop door creaked open. Clara walked in quietly. Her shoes stepped on wood shavings (刨花) that sparkled in the sunlight. Through the dusty windows, the morning light shone on Grandfather’s rough hands. He was gluing a maple chair leg.
The wall calendar still showed January. Its yellowed pages were curling, just like dry leaves. An open order book lay on the desk. February’s page was empty. There had been no new orders since mid-January. Clara held her breath and recorded Grandfather with her phone. She focused on his quick hands as he measured angles with a metal ruler. “This might help him,” she thought, eager to show how skilled he was.
However, when she posted the video online, negative comments flooded in. “Old ways for a dying business!” “No wonder the business is failing!” Saddened, Clara deleted the video quickly. A spider crawled over the empty order book. Its blank pages showed not many people wanted handmade things these days.
“Want to see my treasure?” Grandpa’ s voice broke the silence. He opened a leather album filled with pencil sketches (草图) like library chairs from 1958 and park benches from 1962. A faded photo slipped out: a smiling boy missing two teeth was grinning at the camera, holding a curved (弯曲的) spoon proudly.
“Timmy, my former student,” Grandfather smiled, touching the curve of the spoon in the photo. “Now he designs furniture for tall buildings. Last month’s newspaper had an article about his curved stairs. It was inspired by this very spoon.” He tapped the photo, adding, “Machines make things fast, but hands remember stories.”
Clara looked at the photo — the curved spoon, Timmy’s smile, and Grandpa’s young handwriting on the back: Timmy’s first repair, age 7. Beside her, fresh wood shavings were shining. “Stories must be told,” Clara murmured, taking out her phone again. This time, she aimed to share not just the work, but the story behind it.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Mia and Ben became friends when they were in the school band of Westwood High. Mia was crazy about classical music while Ben regarded hip-hop as his favourite. In spite of their different tastes, their mutual adoration for music gradually built a strong bond that brought them together. After school, they usually practiced music in Ben’s garage, where Mia played music on her cello (大提琴) and Ben beat out rhythms on his laptop.
One day, their school made an announcement about a music competition. The winner would have an opportunity to perform at the city’s renowned music festival. Hearing the news, Mia and Ben were over the moon. Without hesitation, they decided to form a team. However, when it’s time to choose a performance style, a fierce conflict of ideas erupted.
Mia firmly believed a Mozart piece would be the perfect choice to display their combined talents. “The melody and emotion of classical music will surely amaze the judges and the audience,” she exclaimed. However, Ben was convinced hip-hop would be far more fascinating. “Hip-hop is what the young loves. It’s full of life and can really get the crowd going,” he argued.
Quickly the argument was out of control. Mia was boiled with anger as Ben seemed to brush aside everything she held dear. “How can he be so dismissive?” She murmured to herself, full of frustration. Ben started to have second thoughts under Mia’ s sharp criticism, but his deep-rooted love for hip-hop refused to give way. “I don’t want to lose our friendship, but why can’t she understand my passion?” he thought.
In the days that followed, neither of them was ready to back down. Their close friendship was on the edge of breaking apart. One evening, when Mia came to the garage, coincidentally, Ben was also there. They still didn’t talk to each other. The atmosphere became so tense that it was almost suffocating (窒息的).

Passage 1
(24-25高二下·山东菏泽·期中)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My job in the hospital was to provide comfort to those nearing the end of their lives. The people I cared for became like family to me. One woman, Mrs. Wiggins, in particular, became a dear friend. Her children rarely visited, especially toward the end. At first, she seldom spoke, just lying still. But over time, we became close as I learned more about her.
She had three children, and her husband had passed away many years earlier. Her children were too busy to visit her, leaving her feeling very lonely. I tried to make her feel loved, as if the hospital were her home. She shared stories from her past until my shift (轮班) ended, often repeating them during my next shift.
One night, I took an early shift and went to sit beside her. She whispered that her time was near. I left to call her children so they could come quickly. When I returned to her room, she was sleeping. I leaned close to her and asked if she had dreamed of anything. She smiled gently and said she had dreamt of raspberries (覆盆子) and cream.
I must have looked surprised at such a strange answer. Mrs. Wiggins softly laughed and said she would explain. “When I was a little girl, my aunt would take me out for lunch and let me order anything I wanted. For dessert, we’d share a bowl of raspberries and cream. I loved the special taste—it was so smooth, rich, and pure. However, as I grew older and had my own children, I had to spend all my savings to support them. I couldn’t afford to spend money on something like raspberries and cream.”
She continued, “I just didn’t think I deserved it. But promise me you’ll fill your life with raspberries and cream!” Tears streamed down my face as I smiled and held her hand tightly. Then I gently kissed her on the cheek, my voice trembling as I begged her to hold on.

Passage 2
(24-25高二下·山东省临沂市河东区、费县联考·期中)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
In September, 17-year-old Adam Golebiewski’s life went off course when a car crash left him a double amputee (截肢者) below the knees. The accident, which injured three others and resulted in charges against a 19-year-old driver, destroyed the young goalkeeper’s dreams of a professional football career — a path once shining with “extraordinary potential,” as his coach famously remarked.
Over four hard months at Aberdeen’s Woodend Hospital, Adam faced unending physical treatment. Each session tested his resolve: learning to balance on prosthetic (假肢) limbs, battling great pain, and mastering movements most take for granted. On his 18th birthday, instead of blowing out candles at a party, he stood trembling in his hospital room, sweat dripping as he took his first independent steps. “My goal was to be home by Christmas — and I did it,” he told the media, his voice trembling with pride. His physiotherapist, Owen Cairns, marveled: “I’ve never seen such perseverance. His spirit doesn’t bend, let alone break.”
Adam’s parents, Joanne and Adam Sr., transformed their home to welcome him. They removed doors for wheelchair access, installed ramps (斜坡), and turned the living room into his rehabilitation (康复) space. “They still see me as the same person. I’m just… legless now,” Adam joked during a family dinner, though his red eyes betrayed lasting pain. Nights were toughest. Alone in the dark, questions like “Why me?” echoed in his mind. Yet dawn always brought renewed determination. By 6 a.m., he’d be lifting weights in the garage-turned-gym, muscles training as he rebuilt his athletic frame.
As Christmas approached, Adam embraced small victories. He baked gingerbread cookies with his brothers and sisters, laughing as flour dusted his wheelchair. He visited his 91-year-old grandmother, who tearfully hugged him and slid a tin of his favorite apple pie into his lap. But beneath the cheer hid anxiety about the unknowns ahead.
On Christmas Eve, surrounded by twinkling lights and his family’s laughter, Adam nervously adjusted his prosthetics. His father handed him a small box tied with a red ribbon. Inside could be ski lesson vouchers (代金券) — a nod to his love of sports — or information about prosthetic athletic leagues. Outside, snowflakes drifted silently, sheltering the scars of the past. For Adam, this moment wasn’t an ending. It was the first step onto a new kind of field — one where courage and struggle would forever dance together, creating a story far bigger than a football experience ever could.

It was early morning on Dec.4. Harrison Bentzen, a student at the University of Central Lancashire, had been working on her final exam in the library and was ready to go back home for a good sleep. As she reached the bus stop, she found her bank card was missing. She searched her bag, only to find she was out of cash. It was still dark and rather cold. Her home was 20 miles away and it was impossible for her to walk home. Tired and cold, she had no idea how she was going back home.
At that time, a nearby homeless old man noticed what happened to her and was concerned for her safety. He approached Harrison with $3 in his hand, “Miss, this is all I’ve got. Take it! Get a cab!” Harrison was deeply moved. She was deeply grateful for his kindness, but she would not accept the homeless man’s last bit of money.
Harrison declined the offer, but his act of kindness stayed in her mind and heart the following weeks, and finally she decided to try and find him again so that she could somehow repay his kindness. While searching, she learned that the old man’s name was Robbie and he was always kind to people around. The more people she spoke with, the more good deeds she learned about him, such as returning wallets untouched to pedestrians.
Harrison eventually found the man and was able to thank him, and she also learned about his situation. He had been homeless for 7 months and needed to get back on his feet but could not get work due to his old age. She decided to help him get off the streets and into a flat.

“The only failure is the one that I haven’t tried.” This saying always stays with me. Encouraged by my parents, I have always considered exercise as a part of my life.
In my primary school years, I regarded exercise as a source of fun. I often jogged in the park with my family and played sports like badminton and football. I loved competing and showing my endurance and skills. As I entered my secondary school years, exercise started to be more than mere enjoyment. I started learning Muay Thai (泰拳) at a gym near my school.
My trainer, Mr. Smith, was a seasoned Muay Thai fighter. From the very first day of training, he guided me patiently. During warm-ups, he would correct my stance (站姿), ensuring I had a solid base for all the moves. In the early days of training, he taught me the basic kicks and punches (重拳猛击), demonstrating each move with precision.
Exercising through Muay Thai became the relaxation I would always look forward to in the stressful days. Since I trained regularly, the tiring hours of fighting with sandbags and practicing against others improved my mood and regulated the happy chemicals in my brain, so that I would not experience anxiety and stress.
A particular experience at the Muay Thai gym one day, however, made me realise exercise is very important to my life, not just fun and relaxation. It was nearing the exam season, and many students were studying hard for exams. There was an air of tension, anxiety and desperation. I was particularly upset that my recent maths revision was not going well, as I was getting many questions wrong in the practice papers. I started feeling that I was not improving, and that I was bound to fail. One day, I decided to practice Muay Thai to refresh myself, but I hadn’t been to the gym for two weeks.

Sandro was born and grew up in Milan. Until he was 13 years old, he never wanted to leave his hometown. But last year, Sandro’s father’s investment went bad, wiping out the family and sending his parents to prison. As a teenager under 16 years old, Sandro was forced to go to Newcastle in the northeast of England to stay with his uncle Lawrence.
Sandro had a lot of difficulties in the new environment. He didn’t like the food in England. Nobody could forecast the weather in Newcastle. He had to start learning the second foreign language in his new school. Pocket money was not enough as usual. Almost every subject was a challenge for him. Most importantly, he had no friends. It seemed nobody knew him and he knew nobody in the school.
On an early summer evening, when Sandro was going home alone from school as usual, a man called him from behind. Sandro turned around and saw Eddie, his PE teacher, standing in front of him.
“You know, the school will have a swimming competition next month. There will be all kinds of races. Will you participate?” Eddie asked.
Sandro took a look at Eddie with doubt and answered, “You sure? Me? No. I won’t. I can swim, but I’m slower than a snail.”
Eddie smiled and then said, “Yes. Indeed. You are, in breaststroke(蛙泳), in backstroke, and in butterfly, but not in freestyle. So join the freestyle race! 200-meter freestyle is the game suitable for you.”
Sandro was speechless at that moment. He had never known someone in the school was observing him and caring for him.
“I don’t think I can win anything,” Sandro was still a little puzzled.
“But you may get more recognition and consequently you can make some friends. That is more important than prizes,” Eddie responded immediately.
Having hesitated for a while, Sandro agreed to have a try.

Last year, 28-year-old Jane Bell moved to a suburb of Philadelphia for her newly found job and rent a house with a big yard in a village.
Jane had the habit of rising early for exercise. One cold morning, she was jogging through the nearby park when she spotted a weak husky lying by the path, seeming to have been deserted. She approached and checked it, only to find one of the dog’s legs severely broken. The pitiful dog looked at her with its sad blue eyes as if asking her for help. Blaming the dog’s previous owner for the selfish and irresponsible action, Jane, without hesitation, bent down and carried the dog home. Then she drove the dog to an animal clinic for a checkup and treatment, where a doctor told Jane it would take about 3 months before the dog got well.
Jane returned home with the dog, which she called Kobe. She made a comfortable den (窝) in the front yard and took great trouble to look after it. With time going on, Kobe gradually recovered and was able to get around with her. Every morning, Jane would take Kobe for a run. Every evening Jane came home from work, Kobe would welcome her, excitedly wagging (摇) its tail at her. Kobe kept Jane company and became her inseparable and loyal friend.
Jane’s furry companion was usually gentle and quiet. But one dawn Jane was woken up by Kobe’s loud barking and the constant noise of its pawing (用爪子抓) at the door. The moment she opened the door, Kobe pulled on her clothes with its mouth, attempting to lead her away from the yard. Initially dismissing it as typical dog behavior, Jane patted Kobe on the head to quiet it, saying firmly, “No, Kobe! Good boy, calm down!” However, the dog didn’t stop behaving strangely. It arched its back, its nose moving against a piece of ground in the yard anxiously. Jane was surprised and confused.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

The coaching was no easy job. Gretchen played the role of the referee who fired the gun. Squeaky ran together with Louise. To make the race like a real one, Gretchen even asked some of her friends to cheer them on the way and some others to play the role of other runners. The training became an uplifting scene in the neighborhood. Now even the neighbors who used to get annoyed by Louise were excited to join the cheering crowd. Louise’s progress was evident and she ran even faster than Squeaky and she learned to run without Squeaky’s company.
May Day finally arrived. Louise was standing at the starting line of the 50-yard dash with other runners. The gun went off, and Louise started to run. She ran really fast like an arrow that leaves the string. With more and more people joining the cheering crowd, the race became the most attractive event of the May Day celebrations. Louise won the race as expected. She was awarded a medal and Squeaky had never seen her happier. Squeaky and Gretchen threw themselves to Louise feeling proud that they had discovered her running potential.

He made his way to Ben, saying firmly, “Don’t panic! We’ll get out safe.” Ben, his eyes wide with fear, nodded with a forced smile. The second the ground stopped shaking, the students didn’t hesitate to come out from under the desks and make for the exit in an orderly fashion, following the route they were familiar with from the drills. Alex quickly lifted Ben out of his chair, carried him in his strong arms and made his way out of the classroom. He put Ben into his wheelchair outside and pushed it forward quickly. They succeeded in escaping from the teaching building to the open ground.
As Ms Eyre made it to her classroom, she found nobody left behind. Relieved, she quickly reached the playground where her class gathered. When she scanned the crowd and finally spotted Ben, she hurried over, patting him on the shoulder and saying, “Thank goodness, Ben. You’re here.” “Alex helped me out,” Ben responded with gratitude. “You did a great job.” Ms Eyre praised Alex, who just shrugged, saying smilingly, “We’re all here. That’s what matters.” Everyone clapped. The students’ unity and courage made this earthquake an unforgettable experience, strengthening their bond and deepening their understanding of how vital it was to look out for each other.

Charlie stood before me, his eyes clouded with hesitation. He just shifted his weight from one foot to the other. “I... I don’t know how to thank you,” he finally managed to choke out. I patted him on the shoulder gently. “Just take care of yourself,” I said. “I think I’m going to miss having you around,” I added. He lifted his eyes to mine. I could see both his surprise and gratefulness. But before either of us could say anything, a voice came over the loudspeaker calling for passengers to board the bus for Denver. He got on the bus and waved goodbye to me. I watched until the bus was out of sight, hoping this journey would lead him to a better life.
The next morning, while Bev and I were having breakfast, the doorbell rang. As I opened the door, it was Charlie. “I never made it to Denver,” he said, standing there with the hat in hand. Before I could ask him what had happened, he said to me, “Do you think I could read the rest of your Harry Potter books?” I felt my chest swell. “Sure, why not?” I said, motioning for him to come inside. As Charlie stepped through the door, a ray of sunlight streamed in, lighting up the hope in his eyes and quietly sealing the unspoken promise of a new family, where the power of love and acceptance would create a story more wonderful than any magic story.

She listened absorbedly, a proud smile spreading across her face. Tears welled up in her eyes as I described how her son had come to my aid without hesitation. She reached out and gently held my hand, expressing how deeply moved she was by his kindness. I could see the love between them, even in that brief moment. She told me how difficult it had been for her recently, but that her son's compassion gave her strength and hope. I stayed with her for a while, chatting and sharing small laughs. Before I left, I promised to visit again. That day, I realized the power of human connection — it can bring light into the darkest times and heal hearts in unexpected ways.
Some time later, I received a letter of gratitude from the man. In the letter, he thanked me for visiting his mother and said that she had cherished the flowers and the conversation. He wrote that seeing her smile that day meant more to him than words could express. He also shared how inspired he felt by my gesture, and that it reminded him not to lose faith in the goodness of strangers. Enclosed in the letter was the $20 bill again, with a note saying, “Pass it on.” I smiled, realizing that kindness truly has a ripple effect — one small act can spark a chain of warmth and hope.

Immediately, the two girls began their new experiment. They carefully replanted the surviving bean sprouts in the new terrarium, positioning the red grow lamps precisely according to Mr. Carter’s instructions. Lily helped record data while Emma adjusted the light exposure duration daily. Though anxious, they maintained strict schedules, even staying after school to monitor soil moisture. To their relief, tiny leaves started unfurling faster than expected by the fifth day. “Look! The stems are bending toward the light again!” Emma exclaimed, comparing current growth photos with earlier records. Their teamwork transformed despair into determination, with progress visible each morning.
Finally, the day for the science fair arrived. Emma’s display showcased her original research notes alongside dramatic before-and-after photos of the revived plants. The terrarium now held vigorous bean plants with pronounced phototropic curves. Visitors marveled at her detailed documentation of accelerated growth under red light. When judges praised her scientific approach in overcoming accidents, Emma gratefully acknowledged Lily and Mr. Carter’s assistance. Though her experiment had taken an unexpected turn, it ultimately demonstrated both plant resilience and the power of collaborative problem-solving.

But then, she heard a familiar voice, “Go, Mia! You can do it!” It was Emma. Mia turned her head slightly and saw her best friend waving a big banner enthusiastically. The encouragement was like a spark that reignited the fire in her heart. She clenched her fists and summoned up all her remaining strength. Ignoring the pain in her legs and the shortness of breath, she quickened her pace. With every step, she felt more determined.
With just 50 meters to go, she could barely breathe. Her legs were heavy, but her mind was clear. She was so close to the finish line. The image of her family and friends waiting for her at the end spurred her on. Summoning every bit of strength left in her body, she dashed forward. As she crossed the finish line, the crowd erupted in cheers. Mia was tired but overjoyed. She had achieved what she set out to do, and that was more precious than any medal.

On the day of Sally’s birthday, she went to school and found her classroom in total darkness. A wave of confusion washed over her as she stepped hesitantly into the room, her heart pounding. She reached for the light switch, but before her hand could find it, a chorus of voices broke the silence. “Surprise!”, her classmates, led by Jane, jumped out from all sorts of hiding places. As the room flooded with light, Sally’s eyes widened in surprise and disbelief. The classroom was decorated with balloons and streamers, a beautiful cake sat on the teacher’s desk, and in the corner, a pile of presents waited to be unwrapped.
The unexpected surprise brought tears to Sally’s eyes. She turned towards Jane, who was grinning from ear to ear. “We knew you couldn’t have a party this year, so we decided to bring the party to you,” Jane said, her eyes twinkling with mischief. The cloud of confusion lifted from Sally’s mind as she realized that her friends hadn’t been distancing themselves from her, they were planning this surprise all along. The sadness that had been looming over her birthday disappeared, replaced with joy and gratitude. As she cut the cake and opened her presents, Sally realized that this was indeed a grand birthday party, just like the ones she used to have.

To my surprise, without thinking, I replied, “Fine, take them back!” My mother was angrier and more upset. “How ungrateful! I have tried to make this evening special, and this is the kind of thanks I got?” she said and immediately turned around, walking into her bedroom. I placed the clothes inside the box. The birthday cake wasn’t touched. Knowing I had ruined my birthday, I walked to my bedroom. Finally realizing how hard my parents worked for the family, I regretted what I had said. The next morning, the golden box was still sitting on the kitchen table.
I pulled out the orange clothes, and put them on, looking at myself in the mirror. I found I actually looked great in orange. I was more regretful for my behavior of last evening. My mom came downstairs to the kitchen. She looked at me and was surprised that I had worn the orange clothes. “I’m sorry about yesterday,” she said. “I’m sorry too, Mom,” I said. “Can we start over with the birthday?” we said together. And then we both laughed.

Apparently, several nurses had received criticism. They all felt very upset until one of them, or possibly one of my doctors, explained to the officer that the small animals were gifts from a very sick child- patient and that it not only made the patient smile to see them proudly wearing them on their badges, but it made the other patients smile as well. It was eventually decided that they could keep them hanging on their badges when they interacted with child- patients.
After that, I continued to make different animals with beads. And more nurses and doctors asked for the lovely presents. They kept hanging them on their badges when I saw them, which made the hospital full of smile. Soon I got recovered from the disease. I thought the story ended as I got released from the hospital but it turned out to be beyond my imagination. When I was visiting someone in the hospital about six months later, I was moved to see all of the nurses still had the bead animals hanging on their badges.

Observing her grandmother knit the scarf, Jessica absorbed her grandmother’s wisdom. Jessica noticed that every movement of knitting contributed to the overall beauty of the scarf. Life is like this yarn, and life experiences and challenges are like needles. Life is not about the answers but about the joys and the connections we make along the way. Jessica realized that her experiences — both successes and failures — were weaving together to create a unique pattern. As Jessica rose to leave, her grandmother passed the scarf to her, “Try it on”. Jessica held onto the scarf, feeling the warmth. It was more than a scarf; it was a symbol of love, patience, and the knitting of life’s moments.
Jessica left her grandmother’s home, relieving herself of heaviness in her heart. The fallen leaves in the autumn wind, once a reminder of her disappointment, now carried a sense of possibility. Jessica thought about the scarf, and understood each movement was essential to its completion. She decided to approach her new university life with the same patience and purpose her grandmother had shown with her knitting. The unfamiliar campus, challenging lectures, and noisy dormitory no longer felt like barriers but opportunities to grow. As she walked back, Jessica smiled, feeling the weight lifted and knowing that her life, like the scarf, was still being woven into something beautiful.

Finally, I followed Marco into the backyard. The moment I stepped onto the grass, Marco tossed me a soccer ball with an encouraging grin. “Just try kicking it around,” he said. To my surprise, his enthusiasm was contagious. Though my first attempts were clumsy, Marco patiently showed me basic techniques, laughing when I tripped over my own feet. His lightheartedness eased my tension, and soon, I found myself actually enjoying the game. As we played, he shared stories about his hometown. For the first time, I saw Marco not as an intruder in Jake’s space, but as someone who, like me, was just trying to find his footing in a new place.
That day marked a turning point in my relationship with Marco. Soccer became our shared language. We started practicing regularly, and I even taught him some basketball moves in return. Slowly, the awkwardness between us faded. One evening, while watching a game together, Marco admitted, “I was nervous about coming here too. But having you as a friend made it easier.” His honesty struck me. I realized that while no one could replace Jake, Marco had carved out his own place in our home — and in my life.

The next morning, Clara uploaded a new video. This time, her camera swept across the leather album’s sketches of Timmy’s curved spoon and lingered on a yellowed newspaper clipping featuring his iconic stairs. As Grandfather narrated their story, she zoomed in on his hands — wrinkled yet steady — shaping a piece of wood into art. The video ended with his voice, “Hands remember stories machines forget.” By noon, comments exploded, “Hands of a legend!” “Need this magic in my home!” Shares of the video skyrocketed. Amid the flood of praise, Clara spotted a message, “I’m coming to see you soon, Master-back to where the magic began!” Her eyes widened at Timmy’s profile picture which just matched the same grin from that faded photo.
A week later, Timmy, now a famous furniture designer, walked in the workshop. He embraced Grandfather, tears glistening. “Your spoon taught me curves have souls,” he said, placing the curved spoon on the desk. Together, they designed a signature chair — Timmy sketching modern lines on his tablet while Grandfather penciling his classic curves. Clara captured the moment: their four hands shaping a maple chair leg together, mirroring the one Grandfather had glued a week before. When Timmy posted the video, orders poured in: new chairs with curved legs, and even wooden benches for the town park. Wood shavings danced in the sunlight as the workshop came back to life, the order book’s empty February page now filled with March’s growing demands.

When Mia turned away, Ben broke the silence. “Wait!” his voice cracked, “What if we mix them?” Mia paused, her hand frozen on the garage door handle. Ben hurriedly tapped his laptop keyboard, blending Mozart’s delicate melody with lively electronic beats. The garage erupted with a sound like moonlight dancing through city streets. Mia turned around, eyes widening. Without a word, she picked up her cello and began improvising. Their eyes met across the garage, instruments singing a language beyond styles. In the following days, they composed together and crafted a symphony where classical precision met hip-hop’s raw energy.
Finally, the day of the competition arrived. The auditorium buzzed with whispers when it was their turn. On the stage, Ben’s fingers flew across his laptop keyboard while Mia’s bow danced, transforming Mozart’s melodies into something entirely new. The audience clapped along, and even the judges tapped their feet. As the last note faded, cheers filled the hall. When announced as winners, they hugged together, tears in their eyes. Holding the trophy, Ben said, “Classical music and hip-hop work perfectly!” Mia nodded, “So do we.” True connection lies not in identical interests, but in mutual respect for each other’s passions.

I ran as fast as I could to the nearest corner store and bought some raspberries and cream. When I returned to her room, she watched me with a smile as I prepared two bowls of raspberries and cream. We enjoyed the treat together until there was nothing left. And then I kissed her hand and held it tightly. On her face was a glow that showed no pain or fear. It was a bittersweet moment, for she knew that this simple pleasure had been denied to her for so long.
Her children came the next day to discuss the final arrangements. As they sat by her bedside, tears streamed down their faces. I shared the story of the raspberries and cream, revealing how much their mother had longed for that little delight. They listened closely, their faces showing a mix of regret and gratitude. A few days later, she passed away peacefully in her sleep. Just as Mrs. Wiggins wished, I promised to enjoy “raspberries and cream” in my life, cherishing every moment and making the most of my time with loved ones

Adam lifted the box lid, holding his breath. What an exciting moment! Inside were black ski gloves with rough palms, just like his old soccer gloves. A bright red note said: “Snow Camp Starts January 5!” Tears filled his eyes as Dad explained, “This is your new game field.” Greatly encouraged by his father’s words, he knew he was on his new way. Outside, dancing snowflakes covered the window, turning the muddy road where he had his accident into a clean white world of hope.
March sun painted the mountain golden. Adam fastened his new legs into skis, metal parts shining. “Bend low!” Coach shouted, showing the same move from soccer practice. Pushing forward, cold wind rushed past like cheering fans. At the finish line, Mom laughed while melting snow flowed nearby. His brother kicked snow, shouting “GOAL!” in letters that sparkled under sunlight smelling of spring success. “Never never never give up”, the words had been carved into his mind.

She shared the story online and launched a donation to help Robbie. With the story going viral online, a large number of people were touched by how kind Robbie had been to Harrison. Donation started to pour in and the funds were increasing day by day. A hotel manager even called Harrison, offering free accommodation for Robbie. Harrison was excited about people’s positive response, which was beyond her expectation. Within days, she ended up raising far enough money to pay for a flat. Harrison couldn’t wait to give Robbie the funds.
The donation really took Robbie by surprise. Moved to tears, he thanked Harrison for what she had done for him but refused to accept funds, saying that he had never expected anything in return. Harrison told Robbie it was his act of kindness that brought out the best of people and he deserved it. Hearing that, Robbie decided to give the money to a charity which could provide him with housing and then could use the excess funds to help other homeless people in their community who were in his same situation.

At first, I was slow and awkward. My body seemed to have forgotten the smooth movements I’d practiced so hard. I struggled to throw punches and missed my target several times. Frustration welled up inside me, and I was on the verge of giving up. Mr. Smith, noticing my distress, approached me. “Don’t be too hard on yourself,” he said calmly. “Remember, every great fighter stumbles. It’s not about how you start, but how you keep going.” He then demonstrated the moves again, step by step, and encouraged me to focus on the basics.
Listening to Mr Smith, I was deeply impressed by his words. It dawned on me that the same principle applied to my studies. Just like in Muay Thai, setbacks in learning were normal, and I shouldn’t let a few wrong answers discourage me. I realised that perseverance and a positive attitude were the keys to overcoming difficulties. From that day on, I approached both my Muay Thai training and my studies with a new mindset. I kept practicing Muay Thai regularly, using it as a way to relieve stress and build mental toughness.

One possible version:
Every afternoon for the next month, Sandro trained really hard. Starting position, starting dive, turning, pushing off, touching the timing pad, all details, he practiced them over and over. Whenever he was exhausted, Eddie’s words echoed in his mind and supplied extra energy to him. “Maybe I can’t be the champion of the game, but I can be the champion for myself.” He spoke in a low mumble to himself after he finished the last training. Finally, the day of competition arrived. With the sound of the starting gun piercing through the air, the race began as expected.
Sandro dived into the pool confidently like other competitors. He swam as freely as a fish. 150 meters covered, he was left behind by 2 competitors. In the last 50 meters, Sandro swam magnificently, with his arms pushing forward fast, his legs hitting the water hard. Finally, the championship was still out of his reach. When the result was announced that Sandro won third place, however, other players congratulated him, the audience in the stadium bursting into thunderous applause. As teacher Eddie said, he won the recognition and respect from others with his effort.

Good boy, ca lm down!” However, the dog didn’t stop behaving strangely. It arched its back, its nose moving against a piece of ground in the yard anxiously. Jane was surprised and confused.

Then Kobe began to dig the ground with its paws. Before long, it dug a sizable hole in the yard. As the hole expanded, an old gas pipe appeared at the bottom, which concerned her. Given Kobe’s normally well-behaved nature, Jane suddenly realized that its unusual actions might mean a warning of danger. “Dogs usually have sharp noses and can accurately sense the presence of gas while we humans can’t. Something must have gone wrong with the pipe,” Jane thought to herself, nervous and scared. The next minute, she raced into the house and immediately contacted the local gas management department.
Soon gas workers came. Without delay, they got down to detection. Sure enough, there was gas leaking from the aging pipe. It was so dangerous that all the villagers were urged to leave right away. Meanwhile, repair operations were conducted. The workers worked tirelessly for hours to replace the broken pipe. When everything returned to normal, the villagers couldn’t thank Kobe enough. But for its timely warning, an explosion could have easily happened and left the whole village in ruins. As the saying goes, one good deed deserves another. Jane’s kindness brought safety to herself and even the whole neighborhood.
