At first, Morse Code was 19 used with telegraph (电报) machines. People would send messages with dots and dashes, and skilled operators translated these signals into words. Over time, Morse Code found its way into different forms of communication, including radio signals, flashing lights, and even communication under the sea.

You probably remember looking at the paper, feeling you didn’t know any of the answers. Your heart was beating fast...
Not 45 , you think that experience made you feel upset and nervous.
But maybe it didn’t have to be that way. A paper in Nature reports that a one-time online mindset exercise improved the way young people thought about stressful events and their uncomfortable responses. The exercise is based on two mindsets: First, ability is not fixed but can be improved with effort and support; second, body responses to stress can be 46 . As students work through the exercise themselves, they read information about how the brain builds on experience and how the body makes use of stress, for example, a fast-beating heart tends to send more blood to the brain to help you think. The exercise also 47 ways to succeed in stressful situations, and it asks students to write about what they might do differently next time.
Researchers invited thousands of high school and college students to take the exercise. The findings show that this exercise appears to be able to change our understanding of the world around us and our responses to it. Compared with those who didn’t take the exercise, students who took part thought about stress differently, turning it into a way of energizing the motivation to achieve their goal. 48 , the exercise changed their body responses for the better, preparing the body to respond to events as a challenge rather than a threat.
“Difficulty and struggle are your friends,” says Christopher Bryan, a social psychologist and one of the researchers.
Those experiences don’t feel good in the moment, but it’s the path anyone who became truly excellent at anything had to travel.
The exercise could be put into further 49 . It could be specially made for athletes or office workers in the future.
Once it has been fully 50 , the exercise could be ready for use in high schools and colleges nationwide.
The researchers don’t just want young people to rethink stress; they want adults to rethink young people.
“Our studies advise that we should not teach young people that they are too weak to get over difficulties, but that we should, instead, provide them with resources and guidance so that young people can show their skills and creativity in dealing with big problems,” they write in the paper.

Jacob Stone, Media Director
The end of screen
All types of technology will use v 51 to control. That is to say, you talk to your device and it will follow your instructions. Therefore, screens won’t be important. Wanting the 1 52 smartphones with bigger and better screens will be a thing of the past. Instead, we will see holograms (全息影像)-pictures in the real world. They will look amazingly real. Nowadays we chat with friends and look at their face on our phone or computer. In 20 years, we’ll be able to see them sitting next to us, looking very much like a real person.
Alyssa Tyrone, Creative Manager
Connected to everything and everyone
I think we will definitely have an electronic device inside our body which will connect us to everything around us. We will be connected to the m 53 in our homes and places of work, like our cookers and calculators. Well be connected to the Internet, too. In this way. we can find information just by thinking about it. And, of course, we will be connected to each other. It will be possible to share our thoughts and feelings with each other d 54 , even when we’re in different parts of the world.
Dev Khan, Digital Product Developer
New ways to communicate with friends
At the moment, I keep in touch with my friends on social media by liking posts, w 55 reviews and uploading (上传) photos. In 20 years, I think I will disconnect from all these. I’ll put on a pair of s 56 glasses, which will enable me to meet my friends in virtual (虚拟的) worlds. It will be possible to choose the place, from a beach in Spain to a cafe in London. I’ll bring together people from my real life and my online fiends to have social time together. Even though we’ll all be in different places, we’ll chat and share jokes, and the e 57 will be completely real.
D. Answer the questions (根据短文内容回答问题) (12 分)
Once there was a king who offered a prize to the artist who would paint the best picture of peace. Many artists tried. The king looked at all the pictures. But there were only two he really liked and he had to choose between them. One picture was of a calm lake. The lake was a perfect mirror for peaceful towering mountains all around it. Overhead was a blue sky with fluffy white clouds. All those who saw this picture thought that it was a perfect picture of peace.
The other picture had mountains, too. But these were rugged (崎岖的) and bare (光秃的). Above was an angry sky, from which rain fell and in which lightning played. Down the side of the mountain was a big waterfall. This did not look peaceful at all.
But when the king looked closely, he saw behind the waterfall a tiny bush growing in a crack (裂缝) in the rock. In the bush a mother bird had built her nest. There, in the midst of the rush of angry water, sat the mother bird on her nest—in perfect peace.
Which picture do you think won the prize? The king chose the second picture. Do you know why?
“Because,” explained the king, “peace does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble, or hard work. Peace means to be in the midst of all those things and still be calm in your heart. That is the real meaning of peace.”

As students work through the exercise themselves, they read information about how the brain builds on experience and how the body makes use of stress, for example, a fast-beating heart tends to send more blood to the brain to help you think.

We will be connected to the m 53 in our homes and places of work, like our cookers and calculators. Well be connected to the Internet, too. In this way. we can find information just by thinking about it. And, of course, we will be connected to each other.
58.The king offered a prize for the best picture of peace, didn’t he?
,
59.Of all the pictures, how many did the king truly like?
60.How would you describe the lake in the first picture?
It was and .
61.What was there in both pictures?
There were .
62.Where was the bush where the mother bird built its nest?
63.Do you agree with the king’s choice? Why or why not?
【答案】58. Yes he did 59.He liked two pictures/Two. 60. calm peaceful 61.mountains in both pictures 62.It was in a crack in the rock behind the waterfall. 63.I agree with his choice. Because peace means being calm in your heart when there is noise, trouble and hard work around you. The second picture is a good example.
【导语】本文是记叙文,讲述国王悬赏征集最能体现和平的画作,在两幅他喜欢的画中,最终选择了一幅看似不平静但在瀑布后鸟巢中有平静母鸟的画,并揭示了和平的真正含义。

60.根据文章第1段“One picture was of a calm lake. The lake was a perfect mirror for peaceful towering mountains all around it.”可推知,第一幅画里的湖是平静的、安宁的,故填calm;peaceful。
61.根据文章第1段“One picture was of a calm lake. The lake was a perfect mirror for peaceful towering mountains all around it.”和第2段“The other picture had mountains, too.”可推知,两幅画里都有山 ,故填mountains in both pictures。

63.答案不唯一,言之有理即可。比如“我同意他的选择。因为和平意味着当你周围有喧嚣、麻烦和辛苦的工作时,你的内心依然能保持平静。第二幅画就是一个很好的例子。”,故填I agree with his choice. Because peace means being calm in your heart when there is noise, trouble and hard work around you. The second picture is a good example.
