M:Here is the news from Dallas.
Walmart posted its worst monthly sales results in history, declaring a large decrease in April.
Monthly sales measure sales gains or losses at stores open for at least a year. They are an obvious sign of the returns a supermarket earns, and thus an influence on the amount of profit it makes. Most US supermarkets are reporting their April results on Thursday.
Walmart’s 5% drop in the four-week period fell below its earlier forecast of “flat” sales of a 2% to 3% decrease. In a recorded phone message Thursday, Walmart blamed bad weather last month in most US areas.
Walmart’s chief financial officer warned a month ago that the company’s earlier goal of earnings for its latest quarter would be “a challenge” to achieve, considering what the company foresaw as a difficult April. The company didn’t provide an update. It did, however, predict a sales gain for this month of a small decrease.Walmart will report its results for its first quarter on Tuesday.

(2025·济宁高一检测)There comes a time for every family when the tables turn and the parent has to answer to the child.Mine came recently when my wife and I stayed with our son in Los Angeles — our first visit in several years and the longest since he moved west in 2014.A whole week under his roof!
“Dad, don’t leave the water running when you brush your teeth,” Nathaniel warned on our first night.“Don’t pull extra paper towels to wipe the kitchen appliances!” I was instructed to use the dishcloth, which didn’t seem clean.More rules followed. Not to leave shoes sitting out.Don’t wear a neck warmer when walking the dog in the morning — it will warm up when we get to the park.Don’t drink too much juice.
At first I wondered how I’d raised such a tyrant. Then I remembered how often I threw the golden rule of parenting at Nathaniel when he was young.“Don’t drink cold water! Clean your bedroom!” I shouted.“Someday, you’ll have a home of your own and can live however you want!” Now it was payback time.So I smilingly followed Nathaniel’s family rules.
In the next few days, he cleaned the dishes after dinner, assuming he would do a better job than my wife and me.He also planned our daily outings, including an inspired trip to the Autry Museum. And he willingly drove everywhere, sparing me the trouble of Los Angeles traffic.
We were walking along El Matador Beach on our last afternoon and hit an extended range of rocks.I suggested stopping there, because it’s too hard for me to mount the rocks.Nathaniel wouldn’t hear of it and encouraged me across one large stone to the next, patiently telling me where to place my feet and hands as ocean waves came close.I was terrified, but after a couple hundred yards we made it to a fresh sandy stretch.“You did it! I’m really proud,” he said, smiling, as if I’d just learned to ride a bike.It was then that I knew for sure that the son had taken on the role of a father.

Chandra Suda, a Bentonville teen, has developed a phone app that can tell whether a person has tuberculosis (肺结核) by the person coughing into the phone.
Suda was named one of 100 Rise Global Scholars. He wants to use artificial intelligence (AI) to make health care accessible for everyone, especially for patients in rural (乡村的) areas.
The Rise Challenge each year recognises talented teens, aged 15 to 17, working to solve the world’s problems, as the organisation’s website states. The program offers a lifetime of benefits, including scholarships, mentorship, access to career development opportunities and funding, “as they work on humanity’s most pressing problems,” the website states.

Suda noted present methods for diagnosis (诊断) of tuberculosis are slow and can be hard to access, especially in rural areas where tuberculosis is most common.
He developed a fast, low-cost app that uses the sound of a patient’s cough through a smartphone’s microphone to diagnose tuberculosis.
Suda has been working to broaden his research with Donald Catanzaro, a University of Arkansas researcher of tuberculosis diagnostics. The team hopes to apply for support for a research study next year, Catanzaro said.
“Chandra is one of the most successful students I teach and is one of the most helpful students I know for both his classmates and the community as a whole,” said one of Suda’s teachers, Robert Owen Bell.“He is also willing to try almost any project we are offering.”

(2025·济南高一检测)We can see the moon every day, but in fact, humans have not been able to see the true face of the moon. For example, we all view the same side of it — the near side.So why don’t we ever see the far side of the moon?
The secret behind this fascinating mystery is “tidal locking (潮汐锁定)”.To better understand it, let’s imagine two friends holding hands and turning around. As they turn, they always face each other because they’re locked in position by their hands.Similarly, the moon is locked to Earth by tidal force, which means it takes just as long for the moon to turn about its axis (轴) as it does to go around Earth. As a result, we always see the same side of the moon from our position on Earth, while the opposite side, known as the far side or the dark side, remains hidden from view.
Now, you might be wondering why people use the term “dark side” when referring to the far side of the moon.Contrary to popular belief, the far side isn’t always in darkness.Like the near side, it experiences day and night. However, since we can’t observe it from Earth, it often lies in mystery, and thus it gets this name.
Although we’ll never see the far side of the moon directly from Earth, humanity has found ways to explore it.Several spacecraft have taken photos which furthered our understanding of the lunar far side.In June 2024, China’s Chang’e 6 made a soft landing on the far side of the moon and sent back more close-up photos. It brought back soil and rocks collected from there, opening a new chapter in lunar exploration and enabling scientists to discover what they didn’t know about the moon.
There is still so much more to explore on the lunar far side. For example, the far side of the moon is a rare and quiet place free from radio signals reflecting from our planet, which allows scientists to study space phenomena with greater clarity, making it a perfect location for studying space using radio waves.

A.There lives unknown life.
B.It shouldn’t be disturbed.
C.It is visible from Earth.
D.There is no sunlight.
34.Why is Chang’e 6 mentioned in paragraph 4?( )
A.To share a well-known legend.
B.To explain its working principle.
C.To promote an advanced technology.
D.To show efforts of lunar exploration.

故填a。
故填was launched。
60.It 此处是固定句型:it was the first step to do sth其中, it作形式主语,真正的主语为后文的不定式。故填It。
61.with 固定短语with the aim of意为“以……为目的”。故填with。
62.have been carried 结合句中since the 1960s可知,此处要用现在完成时;句中主语More than 40 Mars missions与动词短语carry out为动宾关系。故填have been carried。
64.whether 分析可知, there is or was life on Mars在句中为宾语从句,句子不缺少成分,意义上缺少“是否”含义。故填whether。

Exploring Space, Yes or No?
Exploring Space, Yes or No?
Last Friday witnessed a heated discussion in the English class about whether it is necessary to carry out outer space exploration.Opinions vary from person to person.
Some are in favor of space exploration, as it is of benefit to many fields concerned, including farming, technology and medicine. However, others argue that the success of space exploration is achieved at the expense of time, money and lives.
From my point of view, despite the cost, space exploration has brought us more benefits and solutions, which are far beyond our imagination. Therefore, exploring space should not be a choice but a mission for humans.
(2025·湖北部分省级示范高中高一检测)School was over, the day was fading and it started to rain.I stood at the school gate, with a loaded backpack on my shoulders. It was Friday again — a weekend of joy with unlimited sleeping hours and dinner courses specially made to my taste.I waved goodbye to my friends as they jumped into their fathers’ warm and comfortable cars.Curiously, this gave rise to a disturbing feeling in me.It was not exactly what they called jealousy, but something like inferiority.I knew all I could expect was an old bike Mom would ride along on, with the badly-oiled chain creaking against the wheel to announce her arrival.
Every Friday when Mom came to pick me up, it was a moment full of great expectation and great unease.I always felt my face burning as we rode our way in and out of the cars and saw my friends’ faces through the car windows. It was like stepping into a ballroom with beautifully dressed ladies and finding yourself in a smelly T-shirt.
To tell you the truth, Mom is quite a headache occasionally. She looks like a homely middle-aged housewife. She knits most of my sweaters, chiefly in old styles.Whenever caught by some curious classmates asking what brand my sweaters are, I’d force a smile and reply in a half-joking manner: homemade. She simply doesn’t seem to understand what’s in fashion; Chanel or Gucci means nothing to her.
I couldn’t remember when I started to find her such an embarrassment. As a little boy, I relied on her so much. She had been working at home, cooking in the kitchen, knitting by the lamp, or riding across town to buy me a book I badly needed. It had always been fun riding with her.I had enjoyed watching our shadows growing longer and shorter in an alternate fashion by the light of the streetlamps along the road.Just now there seemed to be something standing between us, something that made her so strange to me and me to her.
注意:(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
Today Mom showed up in a raincoat.
Mom tried to cover me with the back of the raincoat again as a storm set in.
Today Mom showed up in a raincoat. When I saw her, I felt full of great expectation, but great unease. It seemed so unfair that my classmates sat in their parents’ cars, but I just sat on an old badly-oiled chain-creaking bike. Why did I have to hide from the rain under the ugly raincoat? I was full of complaints about all of these.I was sick of these. How I wished I could also have a rich parents like my classmates.Thinking about these things, I was quite dissatisfied with my mother.I even didn’t want her to pick me up.So I didn’t say a word with her and sat on the bike silently.
Mom tried to cover me with the back of the raincoat again as a storm set in.She also didn’t say a word with me.She just wanted to make sure that I didn’t get wet.She seemed to know what I felt.So she just wanted to comfort me and gave me the warmth and love she could give me.Thinking about these, my eyes were filled with tears.I didn’t feel uneased, but was full of greatness for the best she tried to give me.
