Jefferson, 29, also fell in love with space at an early age.It started with a spaceship toy his mother gave him when he was a kid.Today he's a mission operations engineer at NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab. Jefferson, who lives in California, and Jerry, who lives in Florida, meet up a few times a year, and their conversations are always about their shared love for space. “What kind of planet would you live on?” Jerry asked his uncle at StoryCorps. “Of course everybody's going to say Mars, right? Are you gonna say Mars?” Jefferson replied. No, Jerry wants to live much farther from Mars: on an exoplanet (a planet beyond the solar system) called Kepler452b.NASA announced its discovery of the Earthlike planet in 2015. “There're a lot of stars and a lot of exoplanets that we got to find, and so we need people like you to keep doing what you're doing,” Jefferson told Jerry. Jefferson wants his nephew to not only hold on to his curiosity but also share what he learns with others. And Jerry has already gotten the chance to do that.As a kindergartner last year, he taught a lesson to the fifth graders in his school about the planets of the solar system. “It was a big opportunity for me,” Jerry said.“I feel so proud.” Jerry said he learns about space from his uncle.“I learned from you a lot, like more than I could imagine,” Jerry said. “You're learning so much by yourself, too, that you're teaching me as well,” Jefferson said.“And that's really cool. The more you learn, the more you realise the little things in life we take for granted are the very things that make life possible. So when I look up in the stars, I think about that.” 24.What made Jerry Morrison and Joey Jefferson meet now and then?( ) A.A short distance. 27.Which word can best describe Jefferson according to the last paragraph? ( ) A.Generous. B.Humorous. C.Modest. D.Hardworking. C With greater climate catastrophe (气候突变) on Earth, it is natural for us to make every effort to stop the potential floods, snowstorms, and alarming reports from scientists. For many of us (myself included), part of that means running out to buy reusable straws, organic cleaners, and packagingfree products. However, before you are delighted at “green” purchases, take a second to consider the results of a new study from Arizona University.By comparing the shopping habits, mental health and environmental impact of young people, the researchers reconfirmed a principle: Buying less beats buying “green” stuff without effort. And that is true whether you are looking at the impact that your purchases have on the Earth or on your own happiness. It should not come as a shock that simply consuming less is better for the planet. After all, every new item a factory yields requires some resources to produce.Take plastic bag bans for instance. If your city is getting rid of singleuse shopping bags, it can be attractive to pay for a fashionable organic cotton bag hanging in the checkout line of your local supermarket. However, experts insist that growing cotton is actually no better for the Earth than producing the conventional plastic bags. Then what is your best bet for carrying your groceries if you care about sustainability? Any bag you already own. It is not just the Earth that will be happier if you buy less. You will feel more contented too, according to the new study.“People believe that they might well be selfsatisfied about becoming environmentally conscious through ‘green’ buying patterns, but it doesn't seem to be that way,” said the lead researcher Sabrina Helm.“Reduced consumption has effects on increased happiness, but we don't see that with ‘green’ consumption.” “Owning every new ‘green’ product on the market might make you feel contented, but if you relieve yourself of that burden of ownership, most people report feeling a lot better,” said Helm. 28.Why does the author mention “green” shopping habits?( ) A.To call on a green lifestyle. B.To present a half true “green” truth. C.To introduce a social trend. D.To praise people's green efforts. 29.What's the main idea of paragraph 3?( ) A.Growing cotton is far worse for the Earth. B.Reduced consumption is better for the Earth. C.Using any bag you have is the best bet. D.The plastic bag bans are of no effect. 根据第三段内容,尤其是“It should not come as a shock that simply consuming less is better for the planet.” 30.What does the underlined word “contented” in paragraph 4 refer to?( ) A.The sense of achievement. B.The sense of relief. C.The sense of happiness. D.The sense of security. 根据第四段中的“It is not just the Earth that will be happier if you buy less.”和“Reduced consumption has effects on increased happiness”可知,此处指减少消费会让你幸福,所以contented意为“幸福的”。 31.What might be the best title for the passage?( ) A.Less Is More B.The Greener, The Happier C.Happiness Guarantee D.What Are Green Products? 通读全文,尤其是根据第二段内容和第三段中的“It should not come as a shock that simply consuming less is better for the planet.” D Chinese scientists have created starch (淀粉), a type of complex carbohydrate found in plants, using carbon dioxide, hydrogen and electricity. Experts say if such technique can be scaledup (大规模) to the level of industrialization, it may revolutionize how this key nutrient and industrial ingredient is made, since it does not require farming and processing a large quantity of starchy crops such as sweet potatoes and corn, thus saving more water, fertilizer, and arable land. It may also be used to recycle carbon dioxide into a consumable product. This will help reduce carbon emissions and fight climate change, especially if the electricity used is from renewable sources like solar and wind. In space exploration it may provide a sustainable food source for astronauts as they travel long distances in space and try to colonize other planets where growing food is impossible.Future space travelers may simply turn the carbon dioxide they breathe out into food they eat. Ma Yanhe, the director of the Tianjin Institute of Industrial Biotechnology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, says starch and other complex carbohydrates make up 60 to 80 percent of the human diet. “Our breakthrough demonstrates that creating a complex compound like starch is achievable in a lab, and there are many industries that can benefit from this technology,” he says. Plants create carbohydrates like starch through photosynthesis (光合作用), which is an extremely complex process, says Ma, adding that it will take a plant about 60 steps to turn carbon dioxide, water and sunlight into starch. Cai Tao, one of the first authors of the study, says for six years, his team has been focusing on a single project: how to make starch, but do it at a higher speed. He says their method involves first converting carbon dioxide and hydrogen gas into methanol (甲醇).Scientists then piece these singlecarbon molecules like a puzzle into bigger and more complex molecules via enzymatic (酶的) processes. With the help of supercomputing, Chinese scientists have simplified the natural starch making process from about 60 into 11 steps and produced starch. The lab made starch is chemically identical to starch in nature. 32.Which is NOT a potential benefit if the technique can be used on an industrial level?( ) A.It will have a positive influence on climate change. B.It will help produce renewable resources such as solar and wind. C.It will offer a practical food solution for astronauts. D.It will help save several sources from water to farming land. 根据第三段中的“This will help reduce carbon emissions...like solar and wind.” 33.Which might be the biggest difficulty in creating the labmade starch?( ) A.Making starch faster. B.Collecting enough raw materials. C.Repeating the photosynthesis of plants. D.Involving methanol in the making process. 根据倒数第二段中的“Cai Tao, one of the first authors of the study...but do it at a higher speed.”和最后一段中的“With the help of supercomputing...about 60 into 11 steps and produced starch.” 34.What's the best title for the passage?( ) A.Starch, an Important Complex Carbohydrate B.The Great Benefits of Starch C.Chinese Scientists Successfully Turn Carbon Dioxide into Starch D.Chinese Scientists Make Contributions to Climate Change C 35.In which part of a newspaper could you most probably read the passage?( ) A.Science. B.Lifestyle. C.Environment. D.Health. As the season of celebrations begins, many of us find it difficult to let go of the pressure to pause what we are doing.36.________They think the holidays often feel like a chain of fakecelebrations, full of forced gratitude, capturing pictureperfect moments for our carefullyplanned lives on social media.37.________ Thanksgiving Day is meant to reflect gratitude and connection.Yet, for many, these ideals can feel out of reach, especially when they spend long hours with family members they rarely see or don't feel close to.38.________ Friendsgiving Day, a modern alternative to the traditional familycentered Thanksgiving Day gathering, has been gaining popularity since the early 2000s, officially making its way into Urban Dictionary in 2009.The new holiday offers flexibility and creativity.39.________Inviting friends often reduces the stress and performative nature of traditional holidays, creating an environment free from the risk of family disagreements. Traveling for Thanksgiving Day can be exhausting, inconvenient, and expensive. 40.________ You can celebrate locally or plan your travels for a less hectic (繁忙的), nonpeak time. Most importantly, Friendsgiving Day allows us to express gratitude for the people who truly enrich our lives—the ones who are kind, accepting, and supportive in our daytoday lives.Sometimes, that's not family by blood but by choice. So, skip the pressure of a fine feast, grab some board games, order some pizza, and create your own version of holiday joy. A.Thus, a new holiday, Friendsgiving Day, came into being. B.However, Friendsgiving Day provides a flexible alternative. C.It's a good way to celebrate Thanksgiving Day with our beloved ones. D.For the people who dislike the holiday traditions, those can be disturbing. E.They have a strong feeling to express their gratitude to their friends or family members. F.It allows for new traditions, flexible time, unique divisions of labor and creative decorations. G.Also, they come at a high cost to our wallets as well as our physical and mental wellbeing. 37.G 解析:根据上文“They think the holidays often feel like...for our carefullyplanned lives on social media.” 39.F 解析:根据上文“The new holiday offers flexibility and creativity.”和下文“Inviting friends often reduces the stress...the risk of family disagreements.” 40.B 解析:根据上文“Traveling for Thanksgiving Day can be exhausting, inconvenient, and expensive.” Dear Seth, You are only three years old, and at this point in your life you are not able to understand this letter. But some day when you __41__, I hope you will find something __42__ in what I am going to share with you. There were many embarrassing times and situations when I was in primary school.I vividly remember a moment that I still regret to this day. During my childhood, an important part of my time was spent on my collection of National Geographic magazines. Each year on my birthday, my mother would gift me a new magazine to add to my growing collection, which I treasured very much. One day, when I was seven, I ran across a picture of a bologna tree. However, I didn't actually read the article about the tree.I just thought I discovered the source of bologna sandwiches! Little did I know that this newfound knowledge would come back to trouble me in the future. Not long after, I found an opportunity to show my rich knowledge and prove to my classmates that I was indeed a smart kid.During a classroom discussion about unusual things, I took the moment to confidently stand up in front of the whole class. With an air of authority, I declared, “It is a wellknown fact that bologna sandwiches come from the bologna tree.” I deeply believed that the delicious sandwiches I had tasted during a family vacation to Italy grew on trees. This extremely silly opinion was a source of both embarrassment and frustration for me.However, my teacher Ms Murphy at this moment was kind enough to smile and tell me that my misconception (错误想法) was “quite imaginative”.Unfortunately, my classmates didn't have the same opinion, as they laughed loudly and declared that my belief was “the stupidest thing they had ever heard”.It was a moment that made me feel foolish and ashamed. For a while after that incident, I was filled with feelings of selfdoubt and insecurity.I was ashamed of my inability to distinguish (辨别) fact from imagination.I felt like a clown (小丑), thinking that my classmates would never let me forget my foolish mistake. For the next couple of weeks, I was determined to avoid any further embarrassment. _______________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________ I began to share information with my classmates again and became more careful about the information.______________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________ One possible version: For the next couple of weeks I was determined to avoid any further embarrassment.I refused to open the magazines and kept my mouth shut during classes.I felt like I was walking on eggshells, constantly worried that I might say something foolish.I was afraid to share my opinions or ask questions. As a result, I became increasingly isolated.I didn't participate in any activities that might show my ignorance until Ms Murphy talked with me, enlightening me patiently. My spirits lifted, and I felt cheerful once more. I began to share information with my classmates again and became more careful about the information.I started to doublecheck my sources and read articles in their entirety before sharing any information with others, unwilling to make the same mistake twice. It was a lesson learned the hard way, but it made me realize the importance of confirming information before presenting it to others. And while my bologna tree story might have been a bit embarrassing at the time, it ultimately taught me an important lesson that has stayed with me throughout my life. Text one, why did you come home so early?
