The purpose of World Book Day is to encourage people to enjoy reading and there’s no doubt that a book’s ending is usually a big part of that joy. Even so, there are plenty of stories that don’t finish on a happy note. What do you think? Should books always have a happy ending? Part of the reason we read in the first place is that reading makes us happy. We read to get away from troubles and worries in real life. If your reading experiences are full of sadness or other negative feelings, you may give up reading. If your experiences of reading are connected to positive feelings, you could be encouraged to carry on reading. It doesn’t mean stories with happy endings cannot make you enjoy reading. (定位到第1小题) They can also include surprises, which make the stories quite dramatic and exciting, even if you know everything’s going to end well. (定位到第2小题)Exploring love into the characters’ lives is equally as satisfying. In real life, the story doesn’t stop at the “happy ending”. It doesn’t end. It keeps going past that happy moment to a lifetime of more moments both good and bad. Books with unhappy endings are useful because they show you the true feelings such as sadness but in a controlled way. (定位到第3小题) They can help you deal with these feelings in your life. The stories explore the painful side of love and the topic of heartbreak. Reading about these kinds of things in stories can help make us feel like we’ re not alone in our personal experiences. Some experts say that experiencing negative feelings can make you better at understanding how other people are feeling. (定位到第4小题)This ability, known as empathy, helps you to connect with people and support them through hard times. (定位到第5小题)It’s the “unhappy” endings that have the greatest influence. Should books always have a happy ending? YES ◆Stories with happy endings bring good feelings. They help people forget troubles and worries. ◆Stories with happy endings encourage reading. Experiences of reading may influence people’s ___1___. 由画线句子可知,阅读体验可能影响人们的阅读行为或阅读习惯 ◆Stories with happy endings also make people enjoy reading. There can also be ___2___ in them. NO ◆Stories with unhappy endings are useful for managing difficult feelings. They present ___3___ in a certain way. ◆Stories with unhappy endings make people ___4___ connected. They explore the painful side of love and the topic of heartbreak. ◆ Stories with unhappy endings help ___5___ empathy. They shape people’s ideas. Imagine mountains wrapped (裹) in silver water, shining in the spring sun. Summer sees the mountains turn bright green with growing rice. During autumn, they become gold, and in winter they are covered with white frost (霜). These are the colors of the Longji Rice Terraces. These terraces were built by the local Zhuang and Yao people, to whom Guangxi is home. Starting in the Yuan Dynasty, work on the terraces took hundreds of years until its completion in the early Qing Dynasty. Reaching as far as the eye can see, these terraces cover tall mountains, from the bottom to the top. So why did these people turn mountains into terraces? Firstly, there are few large, flat areas of land for growing rice. Building the terraces can solve the problem. Secondly, although there’s plenty of rain, the mountains and the soil there are not right for growing rice. The flat terraces catch the rainwater and prevent the soil from being washed away. But what’s more important is how people have worked in harmony (和谐) with nature to create the terraces. The design is clever: ①Hundreds of waterways are connected with each other. When it rains, rainwater runs along these waterways down the mountains and into the terraces. ②The sun heats the water and turns it into vapor. ③The vapor forms clouds. ④Rain from these clouds falls down onto the mountain terraces again. The terraces also provide a perfect environment for birds and fish. Some of them feed on insects that can harm the rice crops. Besides growing rice, what other valuable things do the Longji Rice Terraces offer locals? Families pass down farming knowledge so that ancient ways can still be used to care for the terraces. They draw thousands of visitors to admire this great wonder created by people and nature working together. A great wonder ----the Longji Rice Terraces Their colors They can be silver, bright green, gold and white in different 1 . Their history They were started in the Yuan Dynasty and 2 in the early Qing Dynasty. Reasons for building them ▲To 3 for growing rice. ▲To catch rainwater and stop the soil from being washed away. In families Keeping the tradition. In tourism Drawing tourists. (1) What do you do when you come across a problem while doing your homework? Andy would take out his smartphone, open an app and search for the problem. Answers would soon appear on the screen. Nowadays, many students do homework with the help of the Internet like Andy. They search for information online, use apps or discuss homework through social networks like WeChat. “It’s convenient. You don’t have to wait or get a tutor (家庭教师) beside you,” Andy said. “You also learn by seeing how others work out problems.” “It also improves our abilities,” said John, another student. He said it especially works for new types of homework. John’s Chinese teacher often asks students to give speeches on great writers. When it comes to John’s turn, he usually searches online, picks out certain stories and makes PowerPoint presentations (演示). “I’ve become skilled at finding information online and using Microsoft Office,” John said. However, many students think this trend (趋势) also brings problems. Some students just copy the answers online without thinking. They become lazy. A head teacher in Andy and John’s school said that knowing how to use the Internet is important. The key is to have good self-control (自制力). No matter how difficult the problem is, think about it independently (独立地) first, or you won’t make progress. If you don’t have confidence in your self-control, ask your parents for help. Getting Help on the Screen The phenomenon (现象) Many students do homework with the help of the Internet. They use apps or social networks. Opinions from students on this phenomenon ※Some think it is convenient and 1 students’ abilities. ※Many think it makes students 2 when they just copy the answers. Opinions from teachers ※Having good self-control is the 3 . ※No 4 will be made unless students understand the reasons behind the answers. ※If students aren’t 5 about their self-control, they should turn to their parents for help. In England, 26 students at a school tried this challenge. They took part in an experiment to find out what life is like when a phone is not around. The volunteers were all 8th graders from a school. They agreed to lock their phones in a box for three weeks. Researchers from the University of York watched their daily life during this time. The experiment was filmed for a TV documentary to help the students give up their phones. Professor Henderson from the university said this experiment was special because it let students go without smartphones for a longer time than other tests. After three weeks, the researchers found many good changes for the students. They went to bed 50 minutes earlier and fell asleep 20 minutes faster each night — this helped with their mood, focus and health. Their sleep was tracked with special devices. The students felt less worried and less sad, and they spent more time with family and friends. Teachers also noticed the students were more active in class. The study only saw a small rise in the students’ working memory, and their long-term focus did not get better. But the researchers thought three weeks might be too short to see big changes in these skills. Overall, the study showed that no smartphones may have a good effect on sleep and mood for students under 14 years old. It tells us that taking a break from phones can bring real advantages to young people. A(n) 1 — life without phonesThe 2 and the researchers*26 students and researchers from the University of York. The purpose * To see what life is like when a phone is not around. 3 * 26 eighth graders took part. * Their phones were locked in a box for 3 weeks. * Their daily life was watched. The 4 for the students * They got better sleep, felt less worried and less sad, spent more time with family and friends and were more active in class. * They improved a little in their 5 .The conclusion * Being away from phones can bring real advantages to young people. The theme, “Galloping Steed, Onward Unstoppable”, promises a show full of cultural energy and strong hopes for the future. The theme’s main idea “Qi Ji” is an ancient term in Chinese culture which means a “thousand-mile steed”—a fast and fine horse. This term reflects the Chinese nation’s spirit of pioneering and making continuous effort that lies deep in Chinese culture. Interestingly, “Qi Ji” sounds quite similar to the Chinese word for “miracle” (奇迹). This adds a special meaning to the term, showing a strong will to create new wonders and great confidence in achieving national goals. The theme itself also matches the beginning of the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-2030). The inspiration (灵感) comes from a famous sentence in “Li Sao”, an ancient poem written by Qu Yuan. This sentence mainly describes a hero riding a great horse, encouraging us to take the lead and create new paths (道路). The gala’s logo is a modern design. It creatively mixes traditional Chinese cloud patterns (known as “yunwen”), thunder patterns (“leiwen”) with interlocking square patterns (“huiwen”) to show four horses running together. The logo can be further extended (延展) to create a scene of ten thousand horses racing forward with unstoppable power. While the logo shows traditional beauty, it also carries the energy of our fast-changing times. Together, the theme and logo hope to gather Chinese people worldwide to celebrate this special night. (4) Language is more than just a way to communicate—it’s a fun and creative playground for the mind. English, in particular, has a large and colorful vocabulary because it borrows words from many languages. This makes it a great language for humor and creativity. One of the funniest ways to play with words is through puns (双关). A pun is a word game in which a word is used in a way that makes you think of more than one meaning, or when two words that sound the same have different meanings. There are different types of puns. Homophonic puns are when two words sound alike but have different meanings, like the joke: “A bicycle can’t stand on its own because it’s two-tired.” Here, “two-tired” sounds like “too tired,” making the joke funny. Homographic puns use words that are spelled the same but have different meanings. For example, “I can’t bear the weight of that bear”—in this case, “bear” refers both to the animal and to carrying a heavy weight. Compound puns mix both homophonic and homographic puns for more fun, like the joke, “Why did the math book look sad? Because it had too many problems.” This one uses “problems” in two ways, as in math exercises and worries that make people sad. Puns have been around for a long time in English literature. They appeared in old texts to help writers play with language and add deep meaning. And they were often used in Shakespeare’s plays for humorous purposes. In the Victorian era, puns became more popular because they allowed people to make remarks on serious topics in a playful way without being too direct. Today, puns are everywhere—in ads, on TV, and all over social media where people can quickly turn their attention toward them. People have had different opinions about puns over time. They used to be seen as clever, but later on, some people thought they were low-level humor—fewer people used them in many situations. Now, thanks to the internet, puns are making a big comeback. It makes it easy to share and enjoy puns quickly. These show how language can change and develop over time. Puns DefinitionA wordplay — a creative and humorous 1 of words with different meanings or similar sounds. Types Homophonic Puns: Sound the same but have different meanings. Homographic Puns: Have the same 2 but different meanings. Compound Puns: Mix both puns above. HistoryEarly age: Added depth and 3 to works. Public opinions Puns were once seen as smart humor and then considered low-quality, but are now widely enjoyed. Conclusion The rise and fall in the 5 of puns show how language, culture, and humor change over time. CHINA TO THE RESCUE! The China International Search and Rescue Team (CISAR) was set up in 2001 and is now made up of several hundred rescue workers and about 20 trained dogs. The team brings help and hope to those poor people after a storm, flood, earthquake, or any other natural disaster. Some even lost their homes and families. After years of strict and careful training, the team took on its first international rescue tasks in 2003. That year, the Chinese team helped save lives after earthquakes in Algeria and Iran. It was the first time that a Chinese team worked abroad, and the team won high praise for their bravery and professional skills. Since then, the CISAR has finished many tasks. The list of people to whom help has been given is long. The team treated more than 3,000 injured (受伤的) people in the 2006 earthquake in Indonesia, and spent several months giving help to over 25,000 people of the 2010 floods in Pakistan. Being a rescue worker isn’t easy. They need to learn how to find trapped people, treat injuries and give out food, water and other supplies. They have to work in dangerous and difficult conditions: after a disaster, there’s often no electricity or clean water, and diseases and accidents may break out. Rescuers fight to save lives, but they also have to face the danger of death. So they need to be strong both in body and mind. Rescue workers also need to be kind-hearted. It takes a lot of love and courage to risk your own life to save others. The members of CISAR have plenty of both, and they’ re always ready to go wherever they’ re needed. CHINA TO THE RESCUE! Its earliest common use dates from the Han Dynasty. The term “pingfeng” means protection from wind, showing its purpose at the very beginning. As time passes, it has been made into different sizes with colourful paintings. On screens, a dragon usually appears. It’s a symbol of light, growth and life-giving water. It also stands for nobility (高贵) and power. The peacock, a beautiful bird, can be seen on screens too. It’s a symbol of everlasting life. Beautiful flowers, which mean wealth and good luck, are also chosen as a popular design (设计) of the pingfeng. All the designs carry people’s beautiful wishes. Behind the pingfeng lies an interesting story. In the past, the unmarried daughter of a rich family was not supposed to see or be seen by men except her father, brothers or very close male cousins. When an admirer paid a visit, however, she might take a secret look at him from a screen behind which she would be completely hidden. Her father would discuss poems with the young man and ask him to create one. If the daughter and her father were satisfied with the young man’s poem and his looks, she might agree to take him as a husband. Today the pingfeng is back in fashion for its beauty and its practical (实际的) use as furniture. Acting as a moving wall or divider, it can be the perfect match for modern sofas and walls, which adds style to them. Everyone always gets their own menu and orders their own food. And, since the tables are usually small, it is quite difficult to talk to or even see more than a few people during the meal. While in modern China there are many Western-style restaurants, the traditional Chinese restaurant experience is quite different from that in the West. Usually, everyone sits at large round tables where it is easy to see and talk with each other, even if it is a rather large group. One person considers the likes and dislikes of the other people in the group and orders the food for everyone. When the food comes, all of it is put in the middle of the table. Everyone then serves themselves by taking a small bit of food and putting it on their own plates. Just as in the West, people can choose what they want to eat, but it is a shared experience. In China, importance is placed on sharing and community. However, in the West, importance is placed on the individual and having one’s own preferences. Finally, since people are seated at a round table, everyone is treated equally. No one person is given greater importance over another. However, respect is still shown to older people or people of higher status, as they always sit at the far end of the room facing the door. Differences that Shape Dining Experiences across Cultures In China In the West Seating Big round tables let everyone talk 1 , even in large groups. Small tables make it difficult to chat with more than a few people. Older people or respected people sit at the end of the room 2 . Ordering One guest orders 3 dishes for the whole group. Everyone orders their own food. Dining Everyone serves 4 . Everyone eats what they order. Cultural 5 The importance of eating at restaurants lies in sharing and community. Personal choices and preferences matter most. Did you know that trees can “talk” with each other? It may look like each tree in a forest stands alone. But they’re connected underground by networks made of fungi. (真菌) Between 80% to 90% of trees are part of these networks. Earlier studies show that trees use networks to warn others about danger. For example, when bugs come to eat the leaves of a tree, the tree sends chemical signals (信号) through the networks. Other trees then receive the messages and make special juices to keep away from the bugs. However, a new study led by the UK’s University of Oxford says something different. After running tests on math models, scientists found that trees do not actually get anything from being nice to each other. This is because trees fight for sunlight, water and food all the time. So, it’s illogical (不合逻辑的) for a tree to help others when it is in trouble. So why are there still signals? Some scientists believe trees are born to send messages, just like we can’t stop our faces from turning red. Some think the fungi may be the ones sending the signals because they can’t live without trees providing energy for them. Another possible answer is that trees may be sending false warnings. The trees around will use their own energy to make juice. This way, the signaling trees can save energy to grow taller. Aren’t they tricky? Believe it or not, there was a time when movies had no sound at all. These movies were called silent films, and there was one actor that was one of the most famous stars in that time: Charlie Chaplin. Charlie was born in England in 1889 to pretty talented parents. His dad was an actor, and his mom was a singer and actress. With his parents, Charlie was destined (命中注定的) to be a star! Sadly, his father left the family shortly after Charlie was born, and his mother was ill and could not care for him. So it was up to him to find ways to make a living. His first performance actually happened because of his mom. She was in the middle of a show when she lost her voice, so Charlie went out to take the place of her. The crowd loved him! Soon he was performing with different groups of people doing vaudeville (杂耍) shows. Although he loved performing, sometimes he did not make enough money, so he did lots of jobs. He was even a toymaker! An American movie producer discovered Charlie Chaplin and signed (签约) him. He only made $150 a week as a movie star, but at that time it was a great deal for Charlie. A lot of actors in the movies seemed alike (十分相似) to Charlie. He wanted to make himself stand out, so he created a character called The Tramp. He played this character in many different movies. He made quite a few movies, in one year starring in 35 films! By the time he was 26 years old, he was a famous star. It’s a fact that this is caused by greenhouse gas emissions from human activities. Many people are suffering this summer. Areas of Europe were hit by big thunderstorms. At least 13 people died in Austria, France and Italy by Aug 19.  In Portugal and Spain, huge wildfires have forced thousands to leave their homes. In the US, more than 80 percent of the west is in drought, up from just 20 percent in 2021. Three-quarters of farmers in drought-hit areas have stopped growing food. In China, the south has suffered from the heat since June. The duration of this year’s high temperatures break the 62-day record in 2013, becoming the longest heat wave in 61 years. Extreme weather events are not only killing people and destroying homes. They also drive more people into hunger. Millions in East Africa have little food to eat today, according to the World Health Organization. For four years, there wasn’t enough rain during its rainy seasons and the land was too dry to grow food. Extreme weather has also made 218 of the known 375 infectious diseases more serious,  including malaria (疟疾), cholera (霍乱) and anthrax (炭疽), according to the journal,  Nature Climate Change.  As viruses try to adapt to higher temperatures, they gradually become stronger and harder to kill. Extreme weather is a warning to us. It’s time for everyone to take action to slow down climate change. Do you have any siblings (兄弟姐妹) or cousins? Do you get along well with each other? How do you think siblings can support each other in their lives? Here is my story with my brother Matthew. “Are you okay?” Matthew asked from the driver’s seat as we hung upside down, trapped(被困在) by our seat belts and covered in sand. I felt the blood rushing to my head, my heart pounding (咚咚作响) like the loud bass (低音吉他) in a car. It reminded me of the four bass-loving brothers who lived across from us growing up.As a little girl, I often wondered if Matthew and I would ever have their friendship. When Matthew found out he was to have a baby brother, he was over the moon. But to everyone’s surprise, “It’s a girl!” His disappointment was clear. As soon as I could walk, my big brother was everything to me. But to him, I was an annoying girl, though he found comfort in playing tricks on me. The sibling relationship is unique, and it’s often the longest relationship we have in our lives. After learning that I missed him, Matthew unexpectedly invited me to visit him at university. In his room, he handed me a drink. We didn’t need many words; as siblings, we had a simple way of chatting. He knew about my struggles—the family secrets—and became my rock. Years later, when I was excluded (阻止参加) from the family Thanksgiving, he refused to attend without me.  Instead, we had dinner—just the two of us. My big brother, once a tormentor (折磨者), had become my protector and friend. But after our off-roading accident,I saw him differently. “Are you okay? Are you bleeding?” I checked his injuries. The man I’d seen as strong was now human, fragile (脆弱的). As we got ourselves out of the car, I realized it was time for me to be his protector. Our shared bond had grown even deeper. I looked at my big brother, and we both smiled. Without him, my life would be unimaginably different. It was my turn to protect him. Thank fully, we had let each other in. Many people in Florida may have experienced the sad accidents that their pets were killed by some wildlife. While wildlife is something to love, it’s also something to fear. These days, more people are living in big cities than ever before. For many, they only get to know wildlife on social media, where it inspires curiosity rather than the fear and respect. The dangers of wildlife, for most, are millions of miles away. One of these online stars is a lone, thin-looking wolf. It has been seen wagging (摆动) its tail by the roadside, drawing the attention of passing drivers. Some people believed it was hungry and started feeding it human food. Over time, it got so used to receiving food from people that it stopped hunting (狩猎) for itself. What’s worse, other wolves in the area are joining its pack. They now depend on humans to keep on living. The wolves and these “curious” and “friendly” humans are both in danger as they lose their natural fear of each other. Human food is bad for the wolves’ health, while the drivers could get hurt or even killed by the wild animals. What’s more, without being hunted by the wolves, the local antelope population has been greatly increasing. This has caused the area’s plants to disappear. One October, a world-famous bear, Grizzly No. 399, was accidentally killed by a passing driver in Yellowstone National Park. She had gotten so used to human visitors that she wasn’t afraid of cars on the road. How could she have known that she would pay for this “trust” with her life? The wild is full of wonders, but it must be treated with respect. We should keep it just that-wild. The 1 of the Fear and Respect Between Wildlife and Human Reasons * Living far from wildlife make many people only remain curious about wildlife. * Some people are 2 by some wildlife’s behavior, such as the wolves. * Some wildlife is so used to its “trusted” human visitors. Dangers * Some wildlife is so 3 on human food that it stops hunting for itself. * Human food harms the wildlife’s heath. * The wildlife’s action makes the local 4 lose balance. * The drivers passing by are hurt or killed by the wild animals. * Some wildlife loses its life by accident. Solutions * Remember the truth that the wild is full of both wonders and risks. * 5 wildlife with love, fear and respect. According to a recent survey, about 70% of teenagers think having supportive friends is one of the most important things in overcoming personal problems. The story of Ava and Aliza shows how friendship can help people build confidence and reach success. One day in class, Miss Margaret asked Ava to read a paragraph. Ava was nervous because she stammered (口吃,结巴) when reading aloud. “Em... Emma was stand... ing...” Some students started laughing at her mistakes. After class, Ava went to the library to practice reading alone. She tried many times but found it difficult to read smoothly. She clearly needed more practice and help from others. Aliza, a classmate who noticed Ava’s efforts, offered to help her. They created a regular study plan and met at a fixed time for reading practice. Aliza taught Ava several helpful methods, such as taking deep breaths before reading and focusing on one word at a time. Research shows that these simple methods can improve reading speed by 40% within a month. After several weeks of daily practice, Ava’s reading skills improved a lot and her confidence grew stronger. At the end of the semester, Miss Margaret held a reading test for the whole class. When it was Ava’s turn, everyone was surprised to hear her read the paragraph smoothly without any mistakes. Miss Margaret praised Ava’s progress, and Aliza felt proud of her friend’s achievement. Their success shows that keeping on trying and getting support are two key parts for personal growth. This experience taught Ava an important lesson about people: there are those who laugh at your weaknesses and those who help you overcome them. Studies have found that positive friendships can increase a person’s chance of success by 30%. The key is to use challenges as reasons to improve ourselves and to thank those who support us along the way. Most importantly, we should also help others in need. In 2007, Muniz worked on a two-year project at one of the world’s largest landfills Until it closed in 2012, Jardim Gramacho got about 70 percent of the rubbish from Rio de Janeiro. About 3,000 rubbish pickers worked there. Their job was to collect the rubbish that they could sell to recycling companies. Their work was dirty and dangerous. Most of them only got between $20 and $25 a day, but many were proud of their work. Valter Dos Santos, who worked there for more than 25 years, told Muniz “I am proud to be a picker. And what we do prevents great harm to the environment. Even one small bottle matters a lot!” Muniz became friends with these workers. They allowed him to take their photos for artistic portraits (肖像). The workers then helped Muniz recreate huge images (图像) of these photos. They made the images colorful and deep with materials from the landfill. Why create such huge images from rubbish? Muniz said he wanted to change people’s lives with the same materials they deal with every day. A work of his sold for $50,000 at a London art sale. And Muniz gave the money to the pickers’ organization. In 2010, director Lucy Walker created a movie about Muniz’s project called Waste Land. The film won great popularity and helped make people learn about the garbage collectors’ lives. The collectors also began to see themselves differently, “Sometimes we see ourselves as so small,” says Irma; a cook at Gramacho, “but people out there see us as so big, so beautiful.” Should books always have a happy ending? Are you allowed to use your phone freely? How well do you think you could live without it for three weeks? 1.根据“This term reflects the Chinese nation’s spirit of pioneering and making continuous effort that lies deep in Chinese culture.” 2.根据“The theme’s main idea ‘Qi Ji’ is an ancient term in Chinese culture which means a ‘thousand-mile steed’—a fast and fine horse.”及“Interestingly, ‘Qi Ji’ sounds quite similar to the Chinese word for ‘miracle’ (奇迹). Consider how Westerners go about eating at restaurants. 【答案】1.easily 2.facing the door 3.the 4.themselves 5.values 【导语】本文主要对比了中西方餐厅在座位、点餐、用餐方式及文化重点上的差异,展现了不同的饮食文化。 1.根据文章中“Usually, everyone sits at large round tables where it is easy to see and talk with each other, even if it is a rather large group.”可知,大圆桌让人们在大群体中也能轻松交谈。故填easily。 2.根据文章中“respect is still shown to older people or people of higher status, as they always sit at the far end of the room facing the door.”可知,年长或受尊敬的人坐在房间尽头面向门的位置。故填facing the door。 3.根据文章中“One person considers the likes and dislikes of the other people in the group and orders the food for everyone.”可知,由一位客人为全桌点餐。故填the。 4.根据文章中“Everyone then serves themselves by taking a small bit of food and putting it on their own plates.”可知,在中国用餐时,每个人都是自己盛饭。故填themselves。 5.根据文章中“the importance of eating at restaurants lies in sharing and community”和“Personal choices and preferences matter most”可知,这是在对比中西方的文化价值。故填values。 (9) 根据短文内容,完成图表中所缺信息。 Did you know that trees can “talk” with each other? 【答案】1.protect 2.from 3.natural 4.need 5.less energy 【导语】本文介绍树木间通过真菌网络交流的相关研究,早期研究认为树木会通过网络发送信号警示危险、互相帮助;而英国牛津大学新研究发现树木实际不会因互助获益,还探讨了树木仍发送信号的可能原因,如真菌依赖树木供能发送信号、部分树木发虚假警示节省能量长高。 1.根据“when bugs come to eat the leaves of a tree, the tree sends chemical signals (信号) through the networks. Other trees then receive the messages and make special juices to keep away from the bugs.”可知,keep away from the bugs即保护自己免受虫子侵害,这里表示附近树木产生特殊汁液保护自己。故填protect。 2.根据第一空可知,此处用protect…from…保护……免于……的搭配。故填from。 3.根据“Some scientists believe trees are born to send messages, just like we can’t stop our faces from turning red.”可知,说明发送信息是树木的自然天生行为。故填natural。 4.根据“Some think the fungi may be the ones sending the signals because they can’t live without trees providing energy for them.”可知,即真菌需要树木提供能量。故填need。 5.根据“Another possible answer may be the trees may be sending false warnings. The trees then won't use their own energy to make juice. This way, the signaling trees can save energy to grow taller.”可知,save energy即使用比周围树木更少的能量。故填less energy。 (10) 阅读下面短文,根据其内容,完成表格中所缺信息。 What if you went to the latest movie and found there was no sound? You would probably ask for your money back! It’s time for everyone to take action to slow down climate change.   【答案】1.had no choice 2.stopped 3.was suffered 4.Effects 5.dead ; hunger 【导语】本文介绍极端气候给人类带来的影响,呼吁人们采取行动减缓气候变化。 1.根据第二段“In Portugal and Spain, huge wildfires have forced thousands to leave their homes. ”可知,在葡萄牙和西班牙,野火迫使数千人离开家园。故填had no choice。 2.根据第二段“In the US, more than 80 percent of the west is in drought, …Three-quarters of farmers in drought-hit areas have stopped growing food”可知,在美国,超过80%的西部地区处于干旱状态,受灾地区四分之三的农民已经停止种植粮食。故填stopped。 3.根据第二段“In China,  the south has suffered from the heat since June. …becoming the longest heat wave in 61 years. ”可知,中国南方遭受最长的高温的折磨。故填was suffered。 4.根据下面“Destroy homes…”列举极端天气带来的灾害;可知,此处填“极端天气的影响”。故填Effects。 5.根据第三段“Extreme weather events are not only killing people and destroying homes.  They also drive more people into hunger. ”可知,极端天气事件造成人员死亡、房屋毁坏,还使更多的人陷入饥饿。故填dead; hunger。 (12) 根据短文内容,完成图表中所缺信息。 Do you have any siblings (兄弟姐妹) or cousins? 【答案】1.disappointed 2.closer 3.excluded 4.instead 5.off-roading accident 【导语】文章讲述了作者与哥哥Matthew从童年时的矛盾到成年后相互扶持的成长故事,展现了兄妹关系从疏离到亲密的转变,最终彼此成为对方的保护者和依靠。 1.根据“When Matthew found out he was to have a baby brother, he was over the moon. 【答案】1.Disappearance 2.attracted 3.dependent 4.ecosystem 5.Treat 【导语】本文讲述了人类喂食野生动物致生态失衡,危险并存,需保持敬畏。 1.通读全文可知,文章主题围绕野生动物与人类之间恐惧与尊重的消失展开,标题应概括这一核心问题,disappearance“消失”,故填Disappearance。 2.根据“It has been seen wagging (摆动) its tail by the roadside, drawing the attention of passing drivers.”可知,文中提到人们因狼的摇尾行为被吸引并投喂,导致其依赖人类食物,attract“吸引”符合题意,此处需填过去分词,与设空处前的“are”构成一般现在时的被动语态。故填attracted。 3.根据“Over time, it got so used to receiving food from people that it stopped hunting (狩猎) for itself.”可知,狼停止狩猎后完全依赖人类食物,强调依赖性,dependent“依赖的”,作表语。故填dependent。 4.根据“What’s more, without being hunted by the wolves, the local antelope population has been greatly increasing. 【答案】1.experience 2.follow 3.faster 4.surprised 5.supportive 【导语】本文通过Ava在Aliza帮助下克服朗读困难的故事,展现友谊在困难时刻的重要性,表明应借助挑战提升自我,感恩支持者并帮助他人。 1.根据“Ava was nervous because she stammered when reading aloud.”及“Some students started laughing at her mistakes.”可知,Ava在大声朗读时存在口吃问题,这是她正在经历的困扰,故填experience。 2.根据“They created a regular study plan and met at a fixed time for reading practice.”可知,这里提到制定了学习计划且在固定时间进行阅读练习,意味着按照计划去执行,故填follow。 3.根据“Research shows that these simple methods can improve reading speed by 40% within a month.”可知,这些方法能使阅读速度在一个月内提高40%,也就是阅读速度变得更快了,故填faster。 4.根据“When it was Ava’s turn, everyone was surprised to hear her read the paragraph smoothly without any mistakes.”可知,大家没想到Ava能在阅读测试中读得如此流畅,让每个人都感到惊讶,故填surprised。 5.根据“The key is to use challenges as reasons to improve ourselves and to thank those who support us along the way.”可知,本文强调友谊在困难时期的重要性,我们应积极成为在他人身处困境时,能够及时给予帮助与有力支持的人,故填supportive。 (15) 根据短文内容,完成图表中所缺信息。 Brazilian artist Vik Muniz uses everyday objects in unusual ways. Through his art, Muniz makes people think differently about their everyday lives, even their own rubbish. In 2007, Muniz worked on a two-year project at one of the world’s largest landfills (垃圾填埋场). Until it closed in 2012, Jardim Gramacho got about 70 percent of the rubbish from Rio de Janeiro.
