语境中体悟
Influenced by his father, who was a historian, Sima Qian took an interest in history when he was a child.He learnt Chinese classics from great literary masters, and at the age of 20, he began travelling extensively across the country.Learning and travelling were exactly ①what helped him in his later career as a historian.

①连接代词what引导表语从句,在从句中作主语;
②从属连词that引导表语从句,在从句中不作成分;
③从属连词because引导表语从句,并在从句中作状语;
④从属连词whether引导表语从句,在从句中不作成分,表示“是否”。
学案中理清
在主从复合句中充当表语的从句叫做表语从句,它常位于系动词之后,用来说明主语是什么或怎么样。
一、引导表语从句的常见连接词
常见的有连接代词 who, which, whatever 等,连接副词 how, why, whenever 等,从属连词 as if, that, whether, because等。
1.that引导表语从句
that引导表语从句时仅起连接作用,无任何意义,在从句中不作任何成分,通常不可省略。
The trouble is that she has lost his address.
麻烦的是她弄丢了他的地址。
2.whether引导表语从句
whether引导表语从句时起连接作用,意为“是否”,但在从句中不作任何成分。
The question remains whether they will be able to help us.
问题还是他们是否会帮我们。

3.连接代词引导表语从句
连接代词what, who, whom ,whose, which等引导表语从句时,除了在句中起连接作用外,在从句中还可充当主语、表语、宾语等成分。

4.连接副词引导表语从句
连接副词where, when, why, how等引导表语从句时,除了在句中起连接作用外,在从句中还分别充当地点、时间、原因或方式状语。
The problem is how we can find him.
问题是我们如何找到他。

5.because, as if/as though等引导表语从句
because引导的表语从句常见于“This/That/It is/was because ...”句型中。as if/as though引导的表语从句常置于系动词look, seem, sound, be, become等后面。

二、表语从句的注意事项
1.why和because引导的表语从句的区别
That's why ... 意为“那是……的原因”,强调结果
That's because ... 意为“那是因为……”,强调原因
I didn't phone her, and that's why she got angry with me.(强调“生气”这一结果)
我没有给她打电话。那就是她对我生气的原因。
I didn't phone her, and that's because I got angry with her.(强调“生气”这一原因)
我没有给她打电话。那是因为我生她的气。
2.reason作主语时的表语从句
主句主语为名词reason时,表语从句中的连接词要用that,而不能用why或because。
The reason for such a serious accident is that the driver was too careless.
(发生)一起如此严重的事故的原因是司机太粗心。
3.表语从句中的虚拟语气
在表语从句中,表示间接的命令、要求、请求、建议、决定等时,主句中的主语通常是:advice, suggestion, proposal, request, order, idea等,从句谓语用“should+动词原形”,should可以省略,但不可换成would。
My suggestion is that we (should) start out early tomorrow.
我的建议是我们明天早点出发。
4.系动词+表语从句
可用于表语从句的系动词有以下三种:
(1)状态系动词:be动词, seem, appear, remain等;
(2)感官系动词:look, smell, taste, sound, feel等;
(3)变化系动词:become, get, turn, grow, fall, come等。
It looks as if it is going to rain.
看起来似乎要下雨了。
It sounds as if you are from the south of the United States.

Xu Yuanchong, China's most renowned master translator, passed away in Beijing at the age of 100.A winner of the highest honour in the field of translation, Xu was best known for his translations of ancient Chinese poems into English and French that have gained worldwide recognition.
