1.I was born with asthma and I never thought I'd be a runner!
赏析:be born with sth. born的常见搭配还有:be born in, be born into, be born+形容词。
2.It lists your performance against other runners in your social network.
3.Soon, I found that I was not alone — I came across other runners in the same area running for the same purpose!
4.As a computer engineer, there's always a new challenge just around the corner!

come across

Not so long ago, I didn't do any exercise — not even any jogging! Then I discovered an app called Running Power. It lists your performance against other runners in your social network. At first, I kept running just to see my name in the top five. Soon, I found that I was not alone — I came across other runners in the same area running for the same purpose! Now I no longer use the app, but I've fallen in love with running, and still do it with my running friends.
赏析:本段中使用时间顺序词“Not so long ago,Then, At first, Soon, Now”条理清晰地描述了Sarah喜欢上跑步的过程。
Whether I'm at the gym or on the road,my nervous energy pushes me through mile one. By mile two, the tension has moved from my mind to my legs. By the end of the run, all my stress has disappeared and I'm ready to face the next day at work!

A
A sedentary (久坐的) lifestyle eventually does harm to health but breaking out of long inactivity can be discouraging. Now, however, there may be a simple way to ease into more activity.
A recent study suggests that short bouts (一阵) of intense (高强度的) activity every day — climbing stairs, carrying a heavy load of things, or stepping up the pace of housework — can provide great health benefits.
“It's quite simple, but it's not an idea that's out there,” says University of Sydney exercise scientist Emmanuel Stamatakis who led the research. “Many people, including many health professionals, still think of physical activity as something that you do during your free time, and you need to go somewhere to do it.”
Stamatakis and his colleagues, on the other hand, wanted to understand if daily life activities done somewhat vigorously in short bouts could also provide health benefits compared to a sedentary or less active lifestyle.
To study this, his team used data from nearly 25, 000 adults who were non-exercisers. Without these data, it was almost impossible to continue the study. Over the course of seven days, they used machine learning tools to determine whether a person was either sedentary, standing, walking, or doing intense activities like running during repeated 10-second windows. The researchers also divided any movement into light, middle, or high intensity. Then, for the next seven years, they recorded which study participants died and what caused the death.
The team found that people who did at least four one-to-two-minute high intensity physical activities every day had a nearly 40 percent less risk of dying from cancer and a roughly 49 percent chance of dying from a cardiovascular (心血管的) disease. More bouts of such strong activity meant greater protection from death risks, Stamatakis says, “The more, the better.”
1.What did the recent study find?

“done somewhat vigorously in short bouts”在句中作后置定语修饰“daily life activities”,根据后面“compared to a sedentary or less active lifestyle”可推测,画线词应该和less active意思相反,应该是“高强度地,剧烈地”的意思。故选A。
√
3.Which of the following is mentioned in paragraph 5?
A.Research purposes. B.Research limitations.
C.Research findings. D.Research methods.

Many people have an immediate negative reaction to the word fat. But according to a new study, fat tissue (组织) itself is very, very important for health. It's an important place to store the extra energy in our body. Fat tissue is supposed to be stored under the skin. If it can't go there, it's going to other places such as your liver, heart or pancreas (胰腺). More fat in those organs could affect how well they function. Exercising regularly over time makes fat tissue a more accommodating place for extra energy under conditions when we do gain weight.
To see how exercise impacts fat tissue, researchers compared fat tissue just under the skin from two groups of 16 people with overweight problem: those who reported exercising at least four times a week for at least 2 years, and those who did not exercise regularly. People who had a history of regular exercise in the past had fat cells with features that allowed them to store more fat.
Results from the former group showed several structural changes in fat tissue, including slightly smaller fat cells and more of them, and changes in proteins (蛋白质) that adjust body fat remodeling. However, many of the above changes disappeared when regular exercise stopped. Dr. Horowitz, professor of movement studies at the University of Michigan, said, “This is one of the big reasons why it is so important to be physically active most days. A lot of the body's exercises help you to keep going longer or push harder in your works.”
The key takeaway of the study is that we're broadening our understanding of why it is helpful to exercise. There are so many ways to exercise, and figuring out a way to make it part of the daily routine plays an important role. Of course, you should check with your doctor first to make sure it's safe.
5.What can we learn about fat tissue from paragraph 1?
A.It is most energy-demanding.
B.It has little to do with fatness.
C.Its location makes a difference.
D.Its function is to control health.
根据第一段中的“Fat tissue is supposed to be stored ...could affect how well they function.”
√
6.How are the participants in the research grouped?
A.By their health problem.
B.By their body weight.
C.By their workout habit.
D.By their personal hobby.
根据第二段中“To see how exercise impacts fat tissue ...and those who did not exercise regularly.”
√
7.What is stressed in paragraph 3?
A.Weight loss depends on less fat tissue.
B.Exercise can reshape protein structure.
C.Harder training results in stronger fat tissue.
D.Fat tissue is closely related to regular exercise.
根据第三段中“Results from the former group showed ...changes disappeared when regular exercise stopped.”
√
8.What is the main idea of the text?
A.Fat tissue is harmful to health.
B.Regular exercise improves fat tissue function.
C.Exercise should be done only a few times a week.
D.Avoiding weight gain is the key to health.
通读全文,尤其是第一段中“Exercising regularly over time makes fat tissue a more accommodating place for extra energy under conditions when we do gain weight.”和最后一段中“The key takeaway of the study is that we're broadening our understanding of why it is helpful to exercise.”
