A team of scientists found that spending two hours a week of class time in nature could help 10 to 12-year-olds with serious mental (心理的) health problems to feel better.
About 1,000 children took part in the three-month-long study. They came from 33 different middle schools. All schools were near a park or green space. In the study, half of the children stayed at school, while the other half took part in some nature-based activities for two hours every week. During the two hours they spent in the park, scientists asked teachers to give their daily classes in subjects such as math, languages or science. Also, they asked teachers to hold some short 10-15-minute activities to improve students’ mental health. There were activities like drawing a tree, writing stories, talking about life in nature, and so on.
To see if there were changes in behavior (行为) over the study time, scientists asked students and teachers in the study to answer some questions. These questions could help scientists learn about the changes in children’s mental problems and behavioral difficulties.
The scientists found that after three months, the biggest changes in behavior appeared (出现) in children with the most serious mental problems, such as feeling nervous or having trouble getting along with classmates. Talks with the teachers also showed that children were more peaceful, relaxed and focused in class after the time spent in nature.
This study shows that nature-based programs can help children with more serious mental health problems. The programs may act as a helpful tool to ease school-aged children’s mental problems. According to the scientists, the results are meaningful for teachers to find better ways to help students in need. These low-cost and safe ways will play a bigger role in schools with green space.
4. Teachers can help students with mental problems by asking them to ________.
A. have more PE classes in the gym B. share ideas with parents at home
C write stories in the classroom D. have fun activities in a park
5. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?

C. Why teachers held different activities. D. What children learnt from the activities.
6. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Outdoor activities better students’ physical health.
B. Subjects about nature make students more relaxed.
C. Spending time in nature helps students with mental problems.
D. Learning in nature helps students get some useful safety skills.

I work as a waiter in a cafe and love the job most of the time. I spend the morning hours with all the coffee and see friendly customers (顾客) every day. But there are always those mornings when a few unwanted customers come in. Maybe they are late for work, or simply wake up late. They often make a short loud request (要求) for coffee without looking at me directly. It is hard to stand. And some customers are just impolite and they believe that customers are always right, even if they act like fools. Things like good manners (礼仪) are often unseen in such situations.
Just like me, Austin Simms of Cups Coffee and Tea has had enough of this. To help some customers with their manners, he placed a sign (标牌) outside showing their new pricing method.
His new sign shows the cost of a cup of coffee as $5. If a customer walks up to the waiter and simply says,” Small coffee,” he/she will need to pay $5 for that small coffee. The price goes down to $3 if a customer says, “Small coffee, please.” The coffee only costs $1.75 if the customer says, “Hello. A cup of small coffee, please.” So you can see that customers who show the best manners get the largest discounts (折扣).
The new way certainly has got some people to rethink their manners. We can be sure that at least some customers have become polite, and that’s a good thing, even if they do it just to get discounted coffee. The more you do something, the more you get used to it. So, this method could actually end up making many people more polite.
7. What does the underlined word “impolite” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. 不礼貌的 B. 骄傲的 C. 平静的 D. 忙碌的
8. What is the sign of Cups Coffee and Tea mainly used to do?
A. To show the cost of coffee there is low.
B To attract more customers to the shop.
C. To show kind customers get good service.
D. To encourage customers to have good manners.
9. What can customers do to get the cheapest small coffee?
A. Say “Small coffee” quickly.
B. Say “Small coffee, please”.
C. Say “Hello. A cup of small coffee please”.
D. Argue that customers are always right.
10. What is the purpose (目的) of the writer in writing the last paragraph (段落)?
A. To explain practice makes perfect.
B. To show he supports Austin’s method.
C. To show the importance of politeness.
D. To introduce the future of the cafe business.
( D )
How would you describe yourself in one word? If your answer is “organized (有条理的)”, “hardworking”or “active”, you might live longer. That’s according to a study by an international team of researchers (研究者). They wanted to find out whether there is a connection (关联) between the way people describe themselves and their lifespan (寿命).
The researchers looked at data (数据) from more than 22,000 people. All of them completed questionnaires (问卷) that included questions about their personality (个性). Researchers also got the health data of these people. Researchers followed them for 6 to 28 years to see how long they lived and when they died. They then compared this data with the personality the participants (参与者) had described earlier.
The researchers found that people who described themselves as active, organized, hardworking, lively, responsible and helpful were more likely to live longer. However, people who often felt very worried, nervous, or easily upset were less likely to live longer.
The researchers said that people shouldn’t worry about the results of the study, no matter how they describe themselves. It also doesn’t mean that people should try to change their personality. Instead, the results could be used by doctors to help treat their patients (病人). For example, people who say they are disorganized may need greater help to remember their medicine or doctor visits. Those who are not especially active-whether physically or socially-could be given a helping hand to find activities in their local area.
11. What is the main purpose of the international researchers’ study?
A. To find out how to improve people’s personality.
B. To see if self-described personality is connected with lifespan.
C. To help doctors treat patients with mental health problems.
D. To collect health data of 22,000 people around the world.
12. Which is TRUE about the study?
A. It covered more than 30,000 participants.
B. Researchers spent 5 years on the study.
C. “Are you outgoing?” appeared in the questionnaire.
D. Researchers got the results by doing science experiments (实验).
13. Which of the following ideas are researchers most likely to agree with?
A. Active people need to give a helping hand to others.
B Some people should change their personality to live longer.
C. Doctors can use personality information to treat patients better.
D. People should try to use good words to describe themselves.
14. What is the best title (标题) for the passage?
A. Personality Could Affect (影响) Lifespan
B. Healthy Habits Lead to Longer Lives
C. How People can Live a Longer Life
D. Why People Have Different Personalities

How would you describe yourself in one word? If your answer is “organized (有条理的)”, “hardworking”or “active”, you might live longer. That’s according to a study by an international team of researchers (研究者).
