take effect“生效”;stand out“突出”;come alive“生动起来”。
42.C 根据下文“unusually got into a shouting match with another kid over a toy”和“he pushed the boy down”可知,作者儿子与另一个孩子高声地争论并推倒了他,这是不同寻常的,故可推知作者的儿子本来是有礼貌的。talkative“健谈的”;playful“爱玩的”。
protest“抗议”;forgive“原谅”。

in some ways意为“在某种程度上”,为固定短语,故用介词 in。

【情感线】this announcement made Ella nervous→Ella found herself sinking lower in her chair→Ella felt frightened→face her fears and give it a try
Suddenly an idea struck her:Why not create something out ofcrumpled paper? The more Ella thought about it,the more she warmed to the idea. With determination, she began crumpling sheets of paper this time.Had she not experienced such anxiety and pressure, she might not have come up with this idea.(虚拟语气)Over the next few days, with her hands working tirelessly(with 复合结构),the crumpled paper was transformed into an intricate tree, each ball of paper, which symbolized growth even in imperfection(非限制性定语从句),becoming a leaf.
On Friday,Ella carefully carried her work into the library. She placed it among those extremely beautiful paintings. Small as she felt(倒 装),her courage kept her standing tall. Other students, their curiosity aroused(独立主格结构),began gathering around and appreciating the creativity of using something so simple to express such complex emotion. It was its reflection of shared human struggles that made the work stand out.(强调句)On that day,Ella really understood Ms. Amanda's words-art isn't just about skills, but about sharing who you are with the world.
Text 1
W: How cold it is today! I still have to wear a jacket in May in case I catch a cold.
M: It's not strange. I remember I had to wear a jacket one day in June last year.
Text 2
W: Did you hear that Mr. Peterson is coming next week, Gordon?
M: Yes. So call all the department heads to my office. We need to give him reports on our program.
Text 3
W: I'm so excited that we are going to the concert. It will last for about three hours.
M: I miss going to concerts so much. We haven't enjoyed live music for two years.
W: Yes, let's enjoy it.
Text 4
M: You've already tried on 10 dresses, honey. Come on, our daughter will be late for school.
W: It is my first day of work. There are so many people to impress.
M: Don't worry. You are always the most beautiful in town.
Text 5
M: Do you really give up? You've hardly even started to guess. Oh, okay, I'll tell you. The secret addition is dark chocolate.
W: With chicken? No way! That's amazing!
M: Just a tiny bit. The rest of the chocolate went into the cake I'm about to bring out.
Text 6
W: Well, sir. Will you be checking any bags?
M: I just have one carry-on and my computer.
W: All right. Here is your boarding pass. The flight will begin boarding at 7:00 at Gate 3. Enjoy your trip.
M: I'm sure I will. Traveling business class is always a pleasure, especially on an overnight flight like this. I can't wait for it.
Text 7
M: Angela, it seems you're drawn to the computer.
W: I've found this interesting online news about recent discoveries in the Maya civilization.
M: So, what's the latest?
W: Scientists have uncovered cities dating back to 1000 BC. They were connected by long stone highways, which are considered the world's first highway system.
M: I had no idea they had such advanced roads.
W: The Maya were first thought to be hunter-gatherers, but these discoveries have proven they were already creating cities. And to do this in a forest environment, they had to clear rainforest areas for farming and build large underground man-made lakes to store rainwater.
M: Surprising! Someday I'll visit the Maya ruins. I wonder how a civilization like theirs came to an end.
W: Scientists are still trying to uncover the reasons. You know what? I think I know what topic I should present to our classmates in Mr. Smith's class next Tuesday — the great Maya civilization!
Text 8
M: So, is it as boring as you thought it would be?
W: I hate to say it, but I'm actually quite enjoying it.
M: Yes, I knew it.
W: Calm down. I still have no interest in collecting the cards, but I must say this show is pretty attractive.
M: Who do you like best?
W: I quite like Pikachu. It's cool to see a character based on one of my favorite animals.
M: According to the designer, Pikachu was inspired by a kind of mouse, which is confusing. What's a pika anyway?
W: It is part of the rabbit family. Look, here's a photo.
M: Oh, so cute.
W: I know, even cuter when you see them carrying little flowers around. And they're really common across British Columbia.
M: You mean in western Canada?
W: Yeah, so I saw them all the time growing up.
Text 9
M: Why did you quit athletics, Gemma?
W: I'd achieved several medals for coming second and third in world events and I'd been lucky enough not to pick up too many injuries. I felt I had the ability to keep on going. But the truth was that I was fed up with living out of a suitcase.
M: Was it easy to adapt to life after retirement?
W: At first no. After a short rest, I started applying for paid jobs. I needed something to do to prevent me from thinking about the good things about being an athlete.
M: Was it easy to find a job with your background?
W: Not at all. When employers looked at my information, there was no evidence that I was fit for the job.
M: But finally someone took you on and five years later, you set up your own company to help retired sportspeople. Was the business an immediate success?
W: Not in the early days. But I didn't give up. I always had a name for being a strong person when I was an athlete. What kept me going most of all was the knowledge that my business would meet a real need.
Text 10
W: When I read the economic news — the housing problem, the high cost of necessities, or the possibility that AI will make my professional skills out of date — I always come back to the same thought: I should start growing my own vegetables. Money savings and fresh produce aside, gardening and spending time in nature have been shown to reduce stress and anxiety. For people like me who live in cities, there's no doubt gardening helps connect with neighbors, and the exercise of planting can support general health. But like many adults in the US, I live with back pain, and it makes repetitive physical movements uncomfortable. Fortunately, this spring I've been seeing Rebecca, a specialist in health care at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. She has a deep love for plants. She grows flowers as well as medicinal plants in her own garden, and has a lot of ideas about how to ease gardening activities to prevent pain.

Daniel Newham and Cleo Luden set out on an exciting journey to discover Chinese culture, which is part of the documentary China's Culture Journey,an English documentary that provides global audiences with a first-person view of China's rich and deep culture and modern atmosphere, making it accessible to people of all backgrounds.
The documentary sheds light on the preservation of 5,000 years of Chinese civilization, the creative development of traditional culture, the inheritance and protection of Chinese intangible cultural heritage, and the exchanges and learning between Chinese and foreign civilizations.
During their journey, they visited 16 landmarks across China, including 9 UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as Hangzhou's Archaeological Ruins of Liangzhu City, the Grand Canal Yangzhou section, and the Temple of Confucius in Qufu. Beyond admiring the sites, they communicated with local artisans, took part in traditional activities like calligraphy and paper-cutting,and listened to stories from locals. They also dug into the cultural significance of the intangible heritage, developing a real understanding of how traditions are preserved and passed down in daily life.
Having lived in China for over 25 years,Newham,45,is no doubt an "expert". Still,he described the journey as "eye-opening,all-inspiring and heartwarming ".The Green Cloud Corridor,a landmark in Sichuan, particularly impressed him. Newham shared that there were many memorable moments, people and stories during the journey. He was touched by an archaeological team member born after 1995 at the Sanxingdui archaeological site in Sichuan, who broke the stereotype(刻板印象)about people of such a young age. He was also attracted by the oracle bone script calisthenics(甲骨文广播体操)in Anyang, which combines the mysterious ancient Chinese writing with dance exercises.
Eyeing new personal goals of introducing Chinese calligraphy to the world, Newham described how he felt about the journey, inviting more global visitors to visit and experience China firsthand.
24. What is the documentary mainly about?
A. Modern lifestyles. B. Presentations of the heritage.
C. New arrivals to China. D. Preservation of the culture.

C
In this age of online communication,it is easy to forget how recently postcards were a main way of sending images and short messages. A friend once told me that he delivers postcards by hand after he returns from a trip because they arrive more quickly that way. Yet when postcards were invented, they were revolutionary(革命性的)technology.
It was 1865 when German postal official Heinrich von Stephan was the first to propose the use of what he described as an" open post-sheet" made of hard paper. One side would be kept for the recipient's address, and the other side would have just enough space for a short message. It would possibly be sent at the cheapest rate. His proposal was not accepted. Who would give up their privacy, even for convenience?
Four years later, when a similar proposal was accepted by the Austrian post office, the public answered that question. Three million postcards passed through the Austrian post within the first three months. Nations around the world quickly issued their own official postcards.
The postcard's popularity baffled and even shocked the cultural elite(精英).On one hand,it seemed very silly and highly improper to write anything personal on a postcard, where postal workers, neighbors or servants could read the message. On the other hand,if one lacked anything in large amounts to write, why did he write at all?The smaller space limited sustained thought. For true postcard fans, communicating through postcards was not just easier but also better. "Wish you were here" on a hand-colored postcard of the "moonlit" Eiffel Tower could not only give a taste of what the sender was thinking as he put pen to paper but also fire endless imagination. The recipient would imagine the rest.
As telephone service spread, placing a call was faster and eventually would become cheaper. Each new form develops toward the fantasy of perfect communication. And each,in turn, becomes not really needed once it disappoints us. Perhaps we have it backward. We always seek communications that are easy and effortless, and think they will contribute to the real connection. But what is truly valuable to the recipients is the trouble we take in the connection.
28. Why are a friend's words mentioned at the beginning?
A. To stress the popularity of postcards.
B. To compare online apps with postcards.
C. To present the friend's interest in postcards.

Scientists have developed a new method to break down plastic waste, using moisture(水分)from the air. By putting an inexpensive catalyst(催化剂)into plastics and leaving them in the air, researchers broke down 94%of the material in just four hours. The plastics turned into TPA,a valuable material which can be upcycled into more valuable materials,so the process is a step forward compared to present plastic recycling methods. "What's particularly exciting is that we achieve an exceptionally clean and safe process,"co-author Yosi Kratish said.
The US is the number one plastic polluter per head, and people only recycle 5%of those plastics. Over 50%of the plastics ever made have been produced since 2000,and yearly production is projected to double by 2050.To date, only 9%of the plastics ever produced have been recycled. The remainder, with lifetimes often lasting for generations, can have serious environmental and health influence.
To find a new method to break down some of this waste, the researchers put a catalyst to PET,the most common type of polyester(聚酯纤维)plastic. The researchers then heated the mixture. When the team put the material in the air,the mixture turned into TPA. When they tested the method on mixed plastics, the researchers found it had an effect only on the polyester materials. That meant they didn't have to sort the plastics beforehand. It worked on plastic bottles,T-shirts and colored plastics, breaking them down into colorless TPA.
"It worked perfectly,"Kratish said. "When we added extra water, it stopped working because there was too much water. It's a fine balance. But it turns out the amount of water in air was just the right amount. "The team's next steps will be to adapt the process to industrial applications. "Our technology may significantly reduce plastic pollution, lower the environmental footprint of plastics and contribute to a circular economy where materials are reused rather than thrown away," said Naveen Malik, first author of the study.
32. What is the advantage of the new method?
A. It is easier to operate. B. It needs fewer catalysts.
C. It is cheaper and greener. D. It produces more materials.
33. How does the author present the plastic waste problem?
A. By providing numbers. B. By giving examples.
C. By making a comparison. D. By quoting an expert.
34.What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. Why to conduct the research.
B. What is found from the research.
C. How the research is carried out.
D. What to focus on in the research.
35.What does Kratish think of the influence of water in the air?
A. Disappointing. B. Challenging. C. Interesting. D. Amazing.

What does the term" dinosaur" actually mean? What is the average life expectancy in Japan in 2024?Who was the president of the United States when Uncle Sam first got his beard?
These are not just questions from a particularly difficult public test. 36 After asking a group of volunteers these questions, they asked each of them to rate how much they cared about the answers to each question, from "low-curiosity" to "high-curiosity". And then they let the questions stay in the minds of the participants(参与者)for a while.
_ 37 For one thing, the researchers assumed that when people were curious about something, they remembered the details better. They were right. The study showed that people were 20 percent more likely to remember an interesting fact.
But what was perhaps more surprising was what was going on in people's brains at the point when they remembered these facts. 38 They seemed to receive a hit of dopamine(多巴胺).Dopamine is one of our feel-good hormones and activates the part of the brain responsible for learning and forming memories. So,for the study participants, exciting their curiosity made them feel good. 39
Making full use of your curiosity is an important method for building adventure into your life. 40 It also allows us to focus longer." Being curious about everything not only makes you more creative but also enriches your life,"a famous writer wrote.
A. They are three interesting questions.
B. They in turn become better at receiving information.

E. They are used by researchers in a pioneering experiment.
F. When they had a brain examination, their brain activity was quite different.
G. The researchers tried to find out what effect curiosity had on people's minds.

Ms. Amanda, the art teacher, stood at the front of the room." Class, next Friday our school is going to hold an art competition,"she announced. Ms. Amanda was a great teacher, and Ella liked her a lot.But this announcement made Ella nervous."Everyone in the school will have to create a piece of artwork and show it in the library. You can use the different types of artwork we have been studying."Ms.Amanda was quite excited when she spoke while Ella found herself sinking lower in her chair.

Ella finally decided to face her fears and give it a try. When Ella arrived home, she took out a piece of paper and a pencil from her desk drawer. She remembered Ms.Amanda's words."Art is a person's way of expressing his or her feelings.”Ella wrote the word"fear"on her paper. She crumpled(揉 皱)the paper and threw it to one side of her desk. Then Ella stared at the crumpled ball.
