He knew that the city’s immigrant (移民) communities included many soccer enthusiasts, but girls and boys from such communities were nowhere to be seen on the costly club circuit (巡回赛). Two years later, Lowery co-founded the Open Goal Project to help talented young players who could not afford club fees. The program supports about 500 children who play on eight free club teams, in a mini-league, and at summer camps. Beyond soccer skills, participants learn nutrition, financial knowledge, and receive academic and college guidance. Joining his first soccer program at age 4, Lowery played for youth clubs and his parents sacrificed time, money and energy to transport him to games and tournaments. He had a social network of people who backed his passion and really wanted to see him succeed. That foundation helped him earn a full scholarship to Wake Forest University, where he captained the men’s team before joining Major League Soccer. The Open Goal Project operates on an annual budget of roughly $700,000. Local officials say the families it serves would otherwise have no access to high-level soccer. Lowery also hopes the program will broaden the soccer talent pool, and argues that rising costs — often near $1,000 a year per child — preclude many skilled players. Removing financial barriers, he believes, would reveal much untapped talent. On a sunny afternoon, Lowery led a practice on a field, where dozens of kids trained and parents sat in chairs, watching proudly. Coach Precious Ogu, once an early Open Goal Project participant, understood how priceless such sense of belonging was. Feeling out of place in a wealthy suburban club shaped her belief in the Open Goal Project’s mission. As practice ended and the children walked off the field, it was clear they left with more than ball skills. 4. Why was the Open Goal Project established? A. To lower fees of the soccer club. B. To equip children with multi-skills. C. To spark soccer dreams of gifted poor kids. D. To inspire talented soccer players globally. 5. What is paragraph 2 mainly about? A. The influence of sports. B. Lowery’s achievements. C. The value of support. D. Lowery’s love for soccer. 6. What does the underlined word “preclude” in paragraph 3 mean? A. Prevent. B. Transform. C. Motivate. D. Disappoint. 7. Which aspect of the program matters most to Precious Ogu? A. Closer family bonds it forms. B. Welfare services it thinks highly of. C. The path to the future it opens. D. A harmonious atmosphere it creates. C(★) Philosophers have a bad reputation for expressing themselves in a dry and boring way. The standards for most philosophical writing include precision, clarity, and in-depth conceptual analysis that leaves no detail unexamined. There is nothing wrong with clarity, precision, and the like — but this isn’t the only way to do philosophy. Outside academic journals, abstract philosophical ideas are often expressed through literature, cinema, and song. There’s nothing that grabs attention like a good story, and there are some great philosophical stories that delight and engage rather than bore the reader to sleep. Unlike formal philosophy, stories don’t wear their meanings on their sleeve — they require interpretation, and often express conflicting ideas for the reader to struggle with. Consider the metaphysics (形而上学) of race, which explores whether race is real. There are three main positions on this question. One holds that a person’s race is written in their genes (a position known as “biological realism”). Another holds that race is socially real, like days of the week or currencies (“social constructionism”). A third views races as unreal — more like leprechauns (一种魔法精灵) than like Thursdays or dollars (“anti-realism”). A great example of social constructionism is George Schuyler’s novel Black No More. A Black scientist invents a procedure that makes Black people visually indistinguishable from Whites. Thousands of African Americans flock to his clinics and undergo the procedure. White racists can no longer distinguish “real” Whites from those who merely appear White. At the end of the story, new Whites are even paler than those “real” Whites, which kicks off a trend of sunbathing to darken one’s skin in order to look whiter. Philosophically rich stories like this bring more technical works to life. They are stories to think with. 8. What is a common complaint about philosophical writing? A. It uses too many technical terms. B. It lacks clear organizational structure. C. It fails to capture readers’ interest. D. It focuses excessively on abstract theories. 9. How do stories handle philosophical questions? A. Give clear answers. B. Create emotional appeal. C. Simplify concepts. D. Present multiple views. 10. What does Black No More challenge? A. The ethics of scientific advancement. B. The biology of racial classification. C. The economics of social class. D. The psychology of racial prejudice. 11. Which would be the best title for the text? A. Limits of Philosophy B. New Research Trend C. Nature of Philosophical Writing D. Philosophy Enlivened by Stories D The family, wing length and wing color of tropical butterflies all influence their ability to withstand rising temperatures, say researchers at the University of Cambridge. They believe this could help identify species whose survival is under threat from climate change. Butterflies use two strategies to fight against changing air temperatures: thermal buffering (热缓冲) — adaptive behavior like flying to a shaded area to maintain a steady body temperature, and thermal tolerance — dependence on physiological (生理学的) mechanism to prevent overheating. Both of these strategies are needed to deal with climate change. However, deforestation leading to a potential lack of forest cover means tropical butterflies may have to rely on physiological method. Researchers cooperated with the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) to study thermoregulation (体温调节) strategies of tropical butterflies. To assess thermal buffering abilities, scientists collected data from multiple habitats in Panama. Equipped with hand-held nets, they took the temperature of over 1,000 butterflies and compared each to that of the surrounding air. To assess thermal tolerance, at STRI Gamboa facilities, a few butterflies were placed in a glass jar within a water bath with a steadily increasing temperature. The results showed butterflies with large wings tended to have higher thermal buffering ability, but a lower thermal tolerance. Butterflies with dark wings were found to tolerate heat better than those with pale wings. Notably, butterflies from the Lycaenidae family with small, bright wings had the poorest thermal buffering and thermal tolerance abilities. Lead author Esme Ashe-Jepson said, “As temperatures continue to rise, and forests get smaller and further apart because of deforestation, butterflies which rely on their surroundings to avoid high temperatures may not be able to travel between forests, or deal with increasingly common heatwaves.” If temperatures continue to rise alongside deforestation and loss of cool microclimates, there is a very real threat that we could lose many species in this family. 12. What might be the main focus of the research? A. Survival strategies of at-risk butterflies. B. Factors in butterflies’ heat-resistant abilities. C. Butterfly species endangered by warming. D. Physical characteristics of tropical butterflies. 13. What can be learned about the thermoregulation strategies? A. Thermal buffering isn’t always possible to use. B. Thermal tolerance tends to be more effective. C. Thermal tolerance isn’t limited by surroundings. D. Thermal buffering interacts with thermal tolerance. 14. How did the researchers reach their conclusions? A. By comparing 1,000 different species. B. By doing small-scale water-bath trials. C. By referring to collected data of STRI. D. By combining field and lab experiments. 15. What do the researchers find? A. The paler-winged tolerate higher temperature. B. Smaller butterflies have lower thermal tolerance. C. Darker butterflies are hardest hit by heatwaves. D. The larger-winged stabilize body temperature better. Salt and pepper shakers are often ignored as decorative or unnecessary but they serve several purposes. My parents just managed to save a little money for my college education. My high school drama teacher, Mr. Meshke, had just started teaching at a local community college. He was a man with few words and demanding standards. During rehearsals (排练), his criticism was direct, often making me nervous. I had always assumed he was dissatisfied with me. So, it was a surprise when he suggested, in his typically serious way, that I sign up for the college where he taught. With the little money my parents had saved, I managed to pay for my first term’s tuition (学费) and a place to stay. Money was incredibly tight. Despite this, I threw myself into college life, joining the drama club immediately and spending every spare moment rehearsing. Mr. Meshke, who was now my acting professor, was as demanding as ever. His praise was rare, usually a simple nod. Yet, he pushed me harder than anyone, and I grew under his strict guidance, though I never felt close to him. As the winter break approached, I faced a hard truth: I didn’t have enough money to return for the next term. With a heavy heart, I went to tell Mr. Meshke I would have to work full-time to save up, hoping perhaps to return the following year. He listened in silence. Two days later, he called me, and, in his usual serious way, told me, “Well, you probably don’t really deserve it, but I find out there is a college drama scholarship (奖学金) available, and you will get it to fully pay for your college tuition.” I was surprised. That next term, I focused on my studies while taking on every part-time job I could find. I was determined to build my future through this precious chance. Toward the end of the school year, I realized I might need to apply again to keep my drama scholarship. So I went to the financial aid office. There, I asked the woman in charge how to keep my scholarship. When I finished speaking, I noticed a confused look on her face. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The next morning, I knocked on Mr. Meshke’s office door with my heart beating wildly. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 高一英语试卷 时量:120分钟 满分:150分 第一部分 听力(共两节,满分30分) 做题时,先将答案标在试卷上。 1. C 5. C 6. A 7. 根据第一段中“Two years later, Lowery co-founded the Open Goal Project to help talented young players who could not afford club fees.(两年后,洛瑞与人共同创立了“开放目标项目”,以帮助那些负担不起俱乐部费用的有天赋的年轻球员)”可知,创立该项目是为了激发贫困有天赋孩子的足球梦想。 根据第二段内容“Joining his first soccer program at age 4, Lowery played for youth clubs and his parents sacrificed time, money and energy to transport him to games and tournaments. He had a social network of people who backed his passion and really wanted to see him succeed. That foundation helped him earn a full scholarship to Wake Forest University, where he captained the men’s team before joining Major League Soccer.(洛瑞4岁时参加了第一个足球项目,为青年俱乐部效力,他的父母牺牲了时间、金钱和精力,送他去参加比赛和锦标赛。他有一个社交网络,人们支持他的热情,真的希望看到他成功。这个基础帮助他获得了维克森林大学的全额奖学金,在加入美国职业足球大联盟之前,他是该校男子足球队的队长)”可知,本段主要讲述了支持的价值。故选C。 【6题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第三段中“Lowery also hopes the program will broaden the soccer talent pool, and argues that rising costs — often near $1,000 a year per child — preclude many skilled players.(洛瑞还希望这个项目能扩大足球人才库,并认为不断上涨的费用——通常每个孩子每年近1000美元——preclude了许多有技术的球员)”可知,费用上涨阻止了许多有技术的球员加入,所以preclude意思是“阻止”,与A项“Prevent(阻止)”意思一致。故选A。 根据最后一段中“Coach Precious Ogu, once an early Open Goal Project participant, understood how priceless such sense of belonging was. Feeling out of place in a wealthy suburban club shaped her belief in the Open Goal Project’s mission.(教练Precious Ogu曾经是“开放目标项目”的早期参与者,她明白这种归属感是多么的无价。在一个富裕的郊区俱乐部感到格格不入,让她更加坚信“开放目标项目”的使命)”可知,该项目创造的和谐氛围对Precious Ogu来说最重要。故选D。 C(★) Philosophers have a bad reputation for expressing themselves in a dry and boring way. Philosophy Enlivened by Stories 【答案】8. C 9. D 10. B 11. 根据文章第一段首句“Philosophers have a bad reputation for expressing themselves in a dry and boring way.(哲学家以枯燥乏味的方式表达自己而声名狼藉)”可知,人们对哲学写作的普遍抱怨在于它枯燥,无法引起读者的兴趣。选项C“It fails to capture readers’ interest(它未能引起读者的兴趣)”精准地概括了“dry and boring”的信息。 根据文章第三段“Unlike formal philosophy, stories don’t wear their meanings on their sleeve — they require interpretation, and often express conflicting ideas for the reader to struggle with.(与正式的哲学不同的是,故事不会把自己的意思显露在外——它们需要解读,并且经常表达矛盾的想法,让读者思考)”可知,故事不直接显露其含义,需要解读,并且常表达相互冲突的观点让读者思考。 B“The biology of racial classification(种族分类的生物学基础)”是基于此情节的合理推断。 文章结尾“Philosophically rich stories like this bring more technical works to life(像这样富含哲学思想的故事为技术性作品注入了活力)”明确点出这一核心观点。选项D“Philosophy Enlivened by Stories(被故事激活的哲学)”准确捕捉了这一主旨,适合作为标题,其中“enlivened”对应原文“bring to life”的含义。故选D。 D The family, wing length and wing color of tropical butterflies all influence their ability to withstand rising temperatures, say researchers at the University of Cambridge. 12. B 13. A 14. D 15. 故填which。 故填was set。 故填in。 keep doing sth. decided to establish the Saihanba Forest Farm和sent 369 foresters为并列谓语,所以用连词and连接。故填and。 句中已有were unable to ensure,所以此处应用非谓语动词,be equipped with意为“配备有……”,they与equip之间是被动关系,所以用过去分词Equipped作状语。 故填the。 Dear Chris, _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Yours, Li Hua 【答案】Dear Chris, I’m Li Hua, excited to take your “Situational English” course this term. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 When I finished speaking, I noticed a confused look on her face. She checked the system carefully and then told me that I didn’t need to apply again, which came as a complete surprise to me. She explained that the scholarship I was on was a one-time award, but Mr. Meshke had used his personal funds to ensure I could continue my studies. Hearing this, I was completely stunned. All my life, I had misunderstood his seriousness as dislike, but in fact, he had been quietly supporting me. The next morning, I knocked on Mr. Meshke’s office door with my heart beating wildly. When he looked up, I couldn’t hold back my emotions any longer. “Mr. Meshke, I know everything,” I said, my voice trembling. “Thank you for everything you’ve done for me.” For the first time, his serious face broke into a gentle smile. He simply nodded, but his eyes were full of warmth, and the faint light in them seemed to melt away all the distance I had once felt toward him. At that moment, I understood his true care behind his demanding standards. 词汇激活 行为类 ①检查:check/ scrutinize ②确保:ensure/guarantee ③抑制:hold back/restrain 情绪类 ①惊讶:surprise/astonishment ②感激:thank/appreciate 【点睛】[高分句型1]She checked the system carefully and then told me that I didn’t need to apply again, which came as a complete surprise to me.(使用了关系代词which引导的定语从句和that引导的宾语从句) [高分句型2] “Mr. Meshke, I know everything,” I said, my voice trembling.(使用了独立主格结构) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
