No matter how old we are when they leave us, it can be a heartbreaking experience to lose one of our loved ones. Our memories are all that is left by them and happy reminders of their love turn into our most valuable treasures. That's how Mara Soriano feels about the teddy bear that she tragically lost in her recent move to a new apartment.
Diagnosed with cancer, Mara Soriano's mother, Marilyn, gave her daughter the bear as a gift in 2017. After Marilyn's death in June, the gift became even more special to Mara.“That bear was basically the last reminder of my mom. It was her voice that accompanied me,” she said in an interview.
The plush (长毛绒制成的) toy didn't cost a lot, but it contained a recording of her mother's voice telling her that she loved her and was proud of her. The bear, called Mamabear, was in the backpack that contained electronics. When the bag was lost last week during the move, the 28-year-old was heartbroken — not for the gadgets (小装置), but for Mamabear.
Mara posted a photo of her and her Mamabear on social media, explaining the importance of the bear.Millions of people were touched by the story. More and more people were talking about the bear, but there was no good news for Mara. So again and again she posted online about the item and the story behind it, hoping it could catch more viewers' attention in a big way.
A famous actor was moved by Mara's story and then posted an appeal (请求) for Mamabear's safe return.“I think we all need this bear to come home,” he wrote. Along with the message, he also offered a $5,000 reward to the people who found the bear.
Luckily, the Internet did its thing. ____________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Luckily, the Internet did its thing. It's a bit of a modern-day wonder that would never have happened without social media. Mara's story was quickly and continuously spread via the Internet. Several days later, Mara got an email from someone, telling her that the bear was on the way back. What's more, in the email the sender said that deeply touched by Mara's story, she didn't want the reward, just hoping that Mara could live a happy life with memories of her mother in the future. For now, she's keeping Mamabear close and sending thanks to those who kind-heartedly helped with the happy reunion.

Tracee Herbaugh lives in the Boston area of Massachusetts. She thought she was alone in her backyard recently when she used the Merlin Bird ID app. She learned by listening that she was surrounded by more than 12 kinds of birds.
Two birds identified by the app, veery (画眉鸟) and great horned owl, even had a red dot next to their names. The red dot means it is an unusual sighting. Herbaugh wrote, “Who knew these birds could be in one yard?”
Cornell Lab of Ornithology is the maker of Merlin Bird ID. The app was released in 2014. At first, the app only identified birds by their photos through Photo ID. Then we answered a series of questions about the photo to help identify the bird, such as date, area, color, and size. The app became popular when people increasingly wanted to be outdoors.
In 2021, Cornell Lab added Sound ID to identify birds by their sound. In the United States alone, Merlin's Sound ID can identify over 700 kinds of birds. More than 7 million people now use the Merlin Bird ID worldwide.
Alli Smith works on the Merlin project at Cornell Lab. Smith said bird watching by sound “opens up a whole new world”.“Even if you cannot see the birds,”he added, “you can hear their beautiful songs and know they're sharing your neighborhood.”
More than birds, Herbaugh said the app also helped her reconnect with people across the country. When Herbaugh shared her bird list on social media, two childhood friends who also used the app messaged her about it. Her relative in Montana shared a list of birds. And even her young children now quickly go for the app when they hear an unfamiliar bird call.
Herbaugh has identified 45 birds on her list so far. She said now her children are the ones driving her to get more on the bird list.

The way you use your cellphones around your family can have an effect on your relationships. Cellphones can make you feel more connected, but they can also distract (使分心) you and your family from connecting with each other in person. While some people need to check their phones for work or emergency (紧急情况) purposes, it's important to make meaningful connections through face-to-face communication.
Some people have trouble putting away their cellphones. They might feel they can't control how often they pick up their phones or how long they use them. They might feel the need to often check phones without a real reason or feel upset if they don't have an opportunity to use their phones. Using cellphones for work purposes during family time can increase worries and unhappiness among family members. While using their cellphones, parents talk to their kids less, reply more slowly, and overreact to being interrupted. And ignoring their partner while on the phone is linked to lower relationship satisfaction among couples.
Once you've given some thought to your own cellphone use, think about the rules you want your family to follow when you're together. To get your family on the same page, call a family meeting. Review each person's current cellphone use and areas where you think some changes might help. It's not just about simply cutting cellphone use down. Instead, consider what you're using your phone for and what activities you want to carry out.
For example, are you or your children using phones to stay connected, learn something new, do school work, or do something else? If you have kids, ask their opinions on your own phone use. You might be surprised by what they have to share. Use good communication skills by practicing active listening and showing curiosity about what each family member has to say.
Less phone use also usually means less screen time, which enables kids to spend more time outdoors and be more physically active. When teens spend more time actively with their parents, they tend to set higher educational goals.

For many kids, the Internet is at their fingertips. From computers to smartphones, a web of information is open to them. According to a new report from the Pew Research Center, about three out of four kids aged 12 to 13 connect the Internet using a mobile device from time to time. Many younger kids are online, too.
Julian Zeitlinger, 9, from New Jersey, uses his computer to watch videos and play games. To keep him safe online, his parents monitor (监测) his web use and discuss Internet safety with him. “I ask my parents if something is wrong,” Julian says.
Mobile devices offer more ways than ever to share personal information. The information can be dangerous in the wrong hands. A study found that 62% of children aged 8 to 17 have had an unpleasant online experience.
Have you ever had to enter a parent's email address when signing up for a website? That safety net is there because of the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). The law says sites for kids under 13 cannot collect personal information, such as a phone number or full name, without a parent's permission.
This July, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) will update COPPA for the first time since the law was created in 1998 — when there were no smartphones. “The nature of the way kids get online has changed,” FTC lawyer Phyllis Marcus said.
When the changes take effect, COPPA will apply to (适用于) mobile devices and newer forms of advertising. It will expand what falls under “personal information” to include videos, photographs and services that give users' location.
COPPA doesn't cover everything that can go wrong online. That's why kids and parents need to know what to look out for and to stop and think before sharing information online.
“There is a misunderstanding that if a site is following COPPA, it is totally safe,” says privacy expert Shai Samet. He runs kidSAFE, which checks whether a site meets kidSAFE standards and is safe. “It's important that kids know how useful the Internet is but that it also can be dangerous if you are not careful,” he adds.
12.Julian's parents check his web use to make sure ______.
A.he doesn't watch too many videos
B.he doesn't play computer games

D.he controls his online time
根据第二段中的 “To keep him safe online, his parents monitor(监测) his web use”可知, Julian的父母监测他的上网情况是为了确保他在网络上的安全。
√
13.How does the author explain children's unpleasant online experiences?
A.By describing his own experiences.
B.By presenting scientific research.
C.By showing differences.
D.By using examples.
根据第三段中的 “A study found that 62% of children aged 8 to 17 have had an unpleasant online experience.”
√
14.People often hold the wrong idea that ______ .
A.formal websites are always safe
B.the Internet is becoming safer and safer
C.COPPA can ensure their complete safety
D.daily checks prevent future online problems
根据最后一段中的 “There is a misunderstanding that if a site is following COPPA, it is totally safe”可知,人们认为遵循COPPA的网站可以确保他们上网的绝对安全,然而事实表明,这是错误的观念。
√
15.What's the main purpose of the text?

B.To tell people to be careful online.
C.To offer tips on online safety.
D.To introduce an online law.

E-learning
Courses that are taught through the Internet, or online courses, have become popular in many countries. 16 But most show a video of a teacher and students in a classroom. Students watch the video online and take part in online activities. Some courses are free and open to anyone, giving students anywhere the chance to study at any time.
17 Some schools in Singapore, for example, have tablets (平板电脑) and touch screens instead of books and blackboards in the classrooms. There are also social media platforms (平台) to help the students work together on projects, and online “worlds” where the students can interact with each other and the digital environment while completing different tasks.
18 The teachers are in their home countries and are connected to the Korean classrooms through the Internet. Instead of looking at a screen, the students interact (互动) with a robot in the classroom. The robot is controlled by the teacher and can move around the classroom and talk with students. It is unlikely that robot teachers will replace real teachers. 19
These important examples show us that e-learning can be successful. Thanks to technology, more and more ways of teaching and learning are being developed. 20 However, one thing is for sure — there has never been a more interesting time to be a student.
A.There's a golden rule of the Internet.
B.There are different kinds of online courses.
C.Students are more likely to take part in a real class.
D.Other kinds of e-learning are being tested around the world.
E.Nobody knows what the classroom of the future will look like.
F.But like online learning environments, they can be useful tools.
G.In South Korea, some students are taught English by teachers abroad.
16.选B 后文“But most show a video of ... take part in online activities.”
17.选D 根据后文“Some schools in Singapore, ... blackboards in the classrooms.”
18.选G 根据后文“The teachers are in their home countries ... through the Internet.”
19.选F 根据前文“The robot is controlled by ... will replace real teachers.”
How to recognize cyber-attacks
Cyber-attacks may sound like something that happens only in Hollywood movies. You 21 a team of talented Hackers gathered around computer monitors trying to break into a secure bank or government server. In reality, cyber-attacks are much less exciting but no less 22 .
A 23 attack involves a cyber-criminal sending out thousands or even millions of links and files. They assume that someone will 24 fall for their trap and open an infected file or page. Somebody always does. The best way to protect yourself is to learn how to 25 cyber-attacks as well as how to prevent them from happening in the first place.

Hackers are smart. True, there are plenty of apparent scams (骗局) like “the Nigerian Scam” emails. But there are so many attacks that can fool even the skillful computer-users.
Nowadays, cyber-criminals create fake websites and email addresses. You may think you are clicking a link to Dropbox (多宝箱) only to download malware onto your computer, 27 may never know when you have visited the wrong site and downloaded a/an 28 file. So, it's up to you to be vigilant (警觉的) and protect yourself.
So you need to learn to recognize the signs of cyber-attacks. First, recognize 29 activity on your accounts or devices. 30 some things may be obvious such as account password changes, others aren't so easy to spot. Usually, hackers insert pieces of code into valid files and programs. And then, you might receive a file from a trusted sender whose mail has been 31 . Sometimes, the data are even real, but the hacker may have inserted a few lines of code that can also infect your computer. You should take the time to check your “Task Manager” to get a sense of what 32 are running. Check anything suspicious that's 33 in the background. That's often the sign of malware.
Other things to 34 for include random device or Internet slowdown; the software you don't recognize; inability to access your account or unscheduled shutdowns and restarts.
As with everything, 35 is the best medicine. So, instead of waiting for cyber-attacks to hit you, recognize the signs to protect yourself.

How to be a civilized netizen
I am a senior high school student. Today I want to blog about how to be a civilized netizen.
First of all, keep away from the harmful information on the Internet. If you see or read something that makes you uncomfortable, leave the site immediately. Second, we should make good use of our time and not become addicted to the Internet. What we should do now is to concentrate more on our study. Third, express our ideas online politely. The more polite we are, the more likely it is we will be respected.
Do you have any good advice for being a civilized netizen? Your ideas are welcomed below!
It was Christmas morning. Mark received a gift from his grandma. “It must be the video game she promised!” Mark thought. However, when he opened the gift, he discovered it was a red thick woolen sweater, which was a bit too big for him. And its sleeves (袖子) weren't even the same size.
Then Mark said, “I hate the ugly sweater.” “You shouldn't say that!” his mom explained. “Do you know ...” Suddenly, the phone rang and Mark's mom went to pick it up. It was Mark's grandma, and she wanted to speak to Mark.
“Hi, Grandma,” Mark said. “Do you like the sweater? I chose red because I thought it would look lovely on you,” his grandma said. “Honestly, it looks terrible,” Mark replied and hung up the phone. His grandma was so sad and cried after hearing Mark's hurtful comments.
Little did Mark know the sweater's real value. His grandma had knitted (编织) the sweater by hand though she was legally blind. She had knitted the sweater with love rather than by sight. This year, Mark's parents were unable to travel to Philadelphia to meet his grandma for the holidays, so she decided to send a gift to Mark because she was missing him terribly.
Days later, Mark's parents planned a short ski trip. Before leaving home, Mark's mom forced Mark to wear the sweater because it was cold that day. Due to the heavy snow, Mark's father drove slowly. When they finally reached their destination, it was late in the evening. Unable to ski that day, Mark wanted at least to go and look around. His mom asked him not to go too far. Mark nodded and raced off to a nearby place.
However, when Mark was playing, he accidentally fell, injured his head, and was unconscious (昏迷的). Later, finding Mark missing, his parents were worried and looked for him. “Mark, come back now!” they shouted, but there was no reply. They asked a few passers-by whether they had seen a child, but no one knew anything.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
Then they called the police and reached out to the hotel workers. __ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
“Boy, the sweater saved your life. It kept the majority of your body warm,” the doctor said. ______________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Then they called the police and reached out to the hotel workers. With the help of a few workers, they began looking for Mark. Soon the police arrived and joined them. Suddenly one worker found a shoe behind a tree. He immediately informed the police and Mark's parents and they hurried to the location. There they discovered Mark, who was unconscious and covered with snow. Hurriedly, Mark was taken to hospital, but he didn't wake up until a few hours later.
“Boy, the sweater saved your life. It kept the majority of your body warm,” the doctor said. Knowing it was due to the sweater that he was saved, Mark was sorry for being rude to his grandma. When Mark's parents told him what great efforts his grandma had taken to knit the sweater, Mark finally understood its true value. He called his grandma, thanked her and apologized for those hurtful comments. Hearing Mark's words, his grandma felt a sense of relief. Now, many years have passed and Mark still likes the sweater best.
