Last Friday, after finishing my homework, I glanced up at the clock, and it was already 6:20.Suddenly, an idea flashed through my mind — I could cook for my parents. As it was the first time for me to cook, I searched for the recipe of homely dishes on the Internet. After some comparison, I chose two dishes that my parents liked the most.
After putting the fish in the pan, I reduced the heat to medium. As the color of the fish turned golden, I added some salt and garlic. Finally, I finished my first dish and it smelt really great. My parents arrived home the moment I finished cooking.Thankfully, my dad gave me a thumbs-up after his first bite and my mom took photos to mark this unforgettable meal.I was delighted to hear that and was ready to do more things for my parents in the future.
Almost every childhood memory I have is centred on food.Telling stories around a crowded table at holiday dinners, the smell of roasting vegetables, the sensation (感受) of heat coming from the kitchen, all picture a familiar feeling of love and comfort.
My favourite memory of all is making and baking bread together with my grandparents. To this day, I have never tasted bread as delicious as theirs. No other loaf has ever been made with that kind of powerful, unconditional love.
When my son Brian, one of seventh graders, began to refuse usual communication with me, I felt desperate. How I missed those lovely old days when he couldn't wait to tell me his stories in kindergarten the moment I arrived home without getting changed! And there were also times when he brought loads of storybooks to me and demanded to be told all the stories before going to bed.But I didn't know since when everything had changed. There was hardly any sharing about his daily school life with friends or any trouble about his schoolwork. Most of the time, his bedroom door was closed. The cold silence between us seemed to warn me that love between us began to fade.
At that time, like most mothers, I couldn't focus on work and couldn't sleep well. Why did things go off track so much? Was it because my work took away most of my energy that family love was taken for granted? Was it because my only precious spare time went too much to my two-year-old baby daughter that Brian's need for my company was ignored? The more I reflected, the more I felt that I was to blame and it was my responsibility to find a way out.
One day, as my eyes landed onto the bread on the kitchen table, I was reminded of those sweet childhood memories. “Could food help us make a change?” I wondered.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
With an uneasy feeling, I decided to try.
More than that, one weekend evening, Brian offered to help me in the kitchen.
With an uneasy feeling, I decided to try.Just then it occurred to me that several days before Brian ever mentioned that he loved the fried rice that I cooked. After a short visit to the market, I began preparing the ingredients.Although it seemed years that I last cooked fried rice, it was still a piece of cake. When he got home from school, Brian was greeted by delicious fried rice on the table and a note reading, “From your mum who loves you forever.” He was surprised and gave me a hug, saying, “Thank you, Mum.” Although Brian still had his door closed every day, I was greeted by more broad smiles every time he came back from school.
More than that, one weekend evening, Brian offered to help me in the kitchen. When we were preparing his favorite fried rice together, Brian came to me and looked at me in the eyes, saying,“Mum, although I made you unhappy, I love you in my deep heart just as I love fried rice.” I cried that night for nearly half an hour because I got my Brian back again.

I remember a time when steaming dishes of dumplings were laid out before me on the dining table.I was five years old, and a bowl of Chinese vinegar with two drops of sesame oil sat under my nose, eagerly awaiting the three hot dumplings that my grandma would soon drop in.
She'd always break them in half for me so my little fingers could use my chopsticks, and that day, I was the pride and joy of my family for consuming a total of nine dumplings.
That was the last time I had looked at a plate of dumplings without fear — at least until recently.
Somewhere along the way, food transformed into something I avoided.Any plate became fat-protein-carbs in my eyes. The rich fat on red-braised pork remained untouched on my plate, and even my mom's delicious stir-fried dishes were secretly washed in the water before I'd attempt to eat them.Passing by bakeries consumed me with conflict for the rest of the day because they looked so, so delicious.I wanted a taste so badly, but no, I couldn't.
This past March, I visited my family in China for the first time in six years. There was a stillness unlike earlier springs. The winter chill overstayed its welcome, seemingly in response to my grandpa's passing just a few weeks before. My grandpa always requested peanuts with his dumplings, sometimes a bottle of beer, if my grandma allowed it.He liked sauerkraut filling (酸菜馅), since meat was hard on his dentures (假牙), which made clicking sounds when he chewed.
This time around, we bought giant sauerkraut dumplings from the morning market. My grandma still broke them in half for me.This time, I couldn't eat nine, but I ate until I was full, and over the memories of my grandpa's clicking and the warmth of my stomach filling up, I found comfort.

Whether you shop for food in a traditional grocery store or a big-box store, most of your options are junk foods.Terms on food packaging like “low fat” “gluten-free” “keto-friendly” and “a good source of fiber” don't answer the fundamental question:Is this food good for me? There is little reliable guidance available for people who don't have the time, patience or skill to analyze the nutrition labels (标签).
But what we really need is a bold (大胆的) move that would be to prevent people from food that's bad for them:a warning sign that a high-sugar soda or breakfast cereal product, for example, is an unhealthy choice.
Chile, Mexico, Brazil and dozens of other countries have worked to change food labeling.Research has suggested that these labels can help people understand nutritional quality and change their purchasing habits. Finally, the goal of the labels is to improve nutrition and reduce the consumption of over-processed foods.
After Chile adopted several rules in 2016, researchers found that the consumption of drinks high in sugar and sodium declined by nearly 25 percent. In Uruguay a survey published in 2020 assessing the early effects of nutritional warnings found that 58 percent of participants who noticed the warning changed their decisions about buying a product.Of those who changed their decisions, 17 percent said they chose a similar product with fewer warnings, and 18 percent decided not to buy a similar product at all.
In the United States, it will be much more challenging for new labeling laws to take effect. As you might expect, food producers will surely try to stop warning labels from being required. They are arguing that these plans would be costly and that those costs would be passed on to consumers. But research conducted soon after Chile's food labeling and advertising law passed showed no effects on total employment and __________effects on wages (工资) and profit, even as consumer consumption of unhealthy foods declined.
negligible
To be clear, this is just one of many steps toward providing all Americans with a healthy diet. But knowable front-of-package labeling is one of the best levers (杠杆) available to policymakers, and it is already working elsewhere. It can work here, too.
8.What does paragraph 1 focus on?
A.The doubt about nutrition.
B.The problem with labels.
C.The doubt about package.
D.The problem with food.
√
9.What do the examples of Chile and Uruguay show?
A.Warning labels can effectively change people's buying behavior.
B.People in the two countries have better nutrition awareness.
C.Food producers there work well with the government.
D.The consumption of over-processed foods has been stopped.
√
10.What does the underlined word “negligible” in paragraph 5 mean?
A.Obvious. B.Lasting.
C.Insignificant. D.Huge.
√
11.What's the author's attitude towards adopting warning labels in the United States?
A.Unclear. B.Opposing.
C.Doubtful. D.Supportive.
作者在文中列举了其他国家实施食品警告标签取得的积极效果,并在最后一段中“But knowable front-of-package labeling is one of the best levers (杠杆) available to policymakers, and it is already working elsewhere. It can work here, too.”

There is more of a connection between food and culture than you may think. On an individual level, we grow up eating the food of our culture. It becomes a part of who we are. Many associate food from our childhood with warm feelings and good memories and it ties us to our families, holding a special and personal value for us. Food from our family often becomes the comfort food we seek as adults in times of frustration and stress.
On a large scale, traditional food is an important part of culture. It also operates as an expression of culture identity. Immigrants bring it wherever they go, and ____is a symbol of pride for their culture and means of coping with homesickness.
it
Many immigrants open their own restaurants and serve traditional dishes. However, the food does not remain exactly the same. Some materials needed to make traditional dishes may not be readily available, so the taste and flavor can be different from what they would prepare in their home countries. Additionally, immigrants do not only sell dishes to people from the same countries as them, but to people from different countries. Therefore, they have to make small changes about the original dishes to cater to a wider range of customers. Those changes can create new flavors that still keep the cultural significance of the dishes.
We should not only embrace our heritage (传统) through our culture's food but also become more informed about other cultures by trying their food. It is important to remember that each dish has a special place in the culture to which it belongs, and is special to those who prepare it. Food is a window into culture, and it should be treated as such.

A.To help motivate homesickness.

√
13.What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A.The specific traditional food.
B.The national culture.
C.A traditional expression of food.
D.The old-fashioned taste.
√
14.Why do some immigrants have to change the original dishes in their restaurants?
A.To attach cultural importance to their dishes.
B.To announce the beginning of their life on foreign soil.
C.To make the dishes popular among customers.
D.To present their own food culture in a new way.
√

Rex watched the dust cloud around his bare feet as he walked up the path from the river in the summer sunshine. As he came within view of the farmhouse, he saw his mother working in the vegetable garden. She was a hard worker, but when she had a moment to spare, she spent it on her little flower garden in the front yard.
Suddenly, something in the front yard caught Rex's attention. His mother jumped up from the vegetable patch (小块土地) and ran toward her flowers. “Scat! Get out of here, you old turkeys!” There, in her flower garden, a flock of turkeys ruined the flowers. Rex ran to help his mother, shooing (赶走) them back to Mr Blake's farm.
“Go back home!” Rex's mother shouted, her face red. The turkeys waddled single file (一路纵队摇摆行走), ruining every plant in their path. “Rex, chase those turkeys back to where they belong. Then we will prepare dinner for you and your father.” She sadly looked at the ruined flowers.
Rex quickly drove the turkeys back down the road, yelling. As the turkeys entered Mr Blake's yard, Rex grabbed a rock lying on the ground and threw the rock with all his strength to give them a good scare. As a result, Rex found he killed the largest of Mr Blake's turkeys.
What was he going to do? Mr Blake would be very angry. He felt frightened the moment he thought of Mr Blake's angry face. Looking around, he realized no one had seen him throw the rock. He did not have the courage to face Mr Blake. Without another thought, Rex grabbed the dead turkey and hid it in the bushes. He turned and ran home as fast as he could, hoping that no one saw the truth.
His mother praised him for his quick work with the turkeys, not noticing the worry in Rex's heart. As the worry welled inside him, tears filled his eyes.
“What's wrong?” his mother asked.
He ran to her arms, sobbing as he told the whole story, complete with his fear of Mr Blake's anger.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
Finally, as his sobs quieted, his mother
“Hi, Mr Blake,” Rex handed him the dead bird.
Finally, as his sobs quieted, his mother pulled back to look at him, “Rex, take the bird to Mr Blake and tell him what happened. You will never have peace if you don't face him. Mr Blake deserves to hear the truth.” The walk to Mr Blake's house was difficult. Leaving his mother in the yard, Rex stepped to the front door with the dead turkey. He knocked, hoping Mr Blake wouldn't answer. But the door opened.
“Hi, Mr Blake,” Rex handed him the dead bird. When he finished telling the whole story of how he killed the turkey by mistake, Rex looked at the ground, too frightened to watch the reaction. There was a moment's pause, and then Mr Blake said, “That's all right. We'll have it for dinner today.” A smile pulled at the corner of his mouth. Rex couldn't believe what he had heard. As he ran home, he felt as if a rock had been lifted from his shoulders. He realized that doing the right thing was truly easy in the end.
