We often see cars running on their own without a human driver in science fiction movies. But in China, this is becoming real now. People call this kind of cars self-driving cars or robot cars.
Self-driving cars were first famous in 2015. That year, Volvo, a carmaker from Sweden (瑞典), tested such cars in Beijing. Later, Chinese businesses like Baidu started making self-driving cars too.
Now China is on its way to becoming the world’s largest market for self-driving cars. By 2040, China will have 12 million robot taxis, followed by the US with around 7 million.
However, some people are worried about the safety of the self-driving cars. In Wuhan, Baidu’s self-driving cars had some small accidents. Once, one such self-driving car stopped in front of a big box and caused a traffic accident. Another time, two self-driving cars slowed down to face each other, and did not know what to do next. These situations may seem funny but in fact can be dangerous.
Luckily, in December 2023, the government (政府) made a set of new rules to improve the safety of self-driving cars. More rules will come in the future.
