Passage 1

KUNMING — Several Chinese hospitals have found their edge in the country’s growing health drinks market by prescribing herbal formulas that target minor symptoms, from calming nerves and aiding sleep to promoting healthy hair.
This herbal tea is based on a well-known Chinese medicine formula designed to treat symptoms of insomnia and neurasthenia The tea includes sauteed jujube kernels (炒红枣仁), dried lily, poria fungus and albizia bark (茯苓菌和合欢树皮). Each dose of herbs is individually packaged and can be brewed or boiled for easy consumption at home. “The bags of dried herbs are not available for purchase on the market. To obtain them, individuals must obtain a prescription as they are tailored to specific syndrome differentiation (辨证论治),” Wan Xixi, deputy director of the hospital’s medical administration department, explains.
Struggling with insomnia, Guo Xiaofan, a 26-year-old resident of Kunming, the capital of Yunnan province, recently brewed the dried herbs at home and found it a great alternative to drinking milk tea. “The first sip tasted a bit strange but as I continued drinking, it tasted quite good,” she says.
In recent years, an increasing number of health-conscious people have developed a strong interest in such medicinal herbal tea drinks. “I bought five doses of each type. With medical insurance, the total bill came to less than 100 yuan ($13.9) , which I think is very reasonable. After drinking them, I felt the effects were good,” Huang, an employee from Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, says.
Yunnan Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine recently launched five herbal medicine formulas for drinking. On the first day of the market release, 10,000 doses were sold. In addition to hospitals, many pharmacies, including the established brand Beijing Tong Ren Tang, have seen a boost in herbal tea sales.

Passage 2
I have a long history with letter writing, beginning when I was 8 years old. My first pen pal was Abuela, my great-grandmother in Puerto Rico. Then I was writing to my sisters, friends from summer camp and even my husband.
In a letter, there’s more heart involved and less hurry. It requires a pen, stamp, envelope and mailbox trip, unlike hurried texts or emails.
Through my work as a biographer, I’ve observed how special letters can be. In one beautiful letter I read, 22-year-old Doug wrote to his bride-to-be, Mitch, about their future together: “Dance a little... walk together, enjoy each other’s company, laugh a little, cry a little.” Fifty-nine years later, as I read the faded ink on a rough page, I was moved by his timeless message.
Although I met Doug as an 82-year-old during interviews, I truly knew him through letters he wrote to Mitch. His pure devotion to her was clear in every letter, right up to when she was moved to a memory care unit, unable to recognize him anymore.
After I finished writing Doug’s life story, we stayed in touch by phone, but more often we wrote letters to each other purely because it brought us mutual joy.
Last Tuesday, when a letter arrived from Doug’s son, Bruce, my heart sank. Bruce’s letter announcing Doug’s death also included an unfinished one from Doug addressed to me. It was clear that he had struggled to write it with his shaky hands, making his effort even more touching.
This small simple pleasure in life-letter writing is something I’m unwilling to give up, despite the hustle and bustle and busyness of the ever-spinning (不断旋转的) world around me. I’m sure I’ll also do it until my dying days.
1.To whom did the author originally write a letter?
A.Her great-grandma. B.Her sister. C.Her friend. D.Her husband.
2.What can we know about Doug through his letters?
A.His letters are special due to his sense of humour.
B.He persisted in writing letters for a total of 59 years.
C.His letters to Mitch are heavy with his love for his wife.
D.He only wrote letters to his wife Mitch throughout his life.
3.How did the author feel after reading the unfinished letter from Doug?
A.Shocked. B.Grieving. C.Unexpected. D.Affected.
4.What does the author want to convey in this text?
A.Her friendship with Doug is unforgettable.
B.People are encouraged to write letters only.
C.Letter writing involves a more personal touch.
D.Letter writing wastes too much of our precious time.

New technology rules the whole world now. But I still remember when I was a child, I did not have a cell phone or a computer because it was not necessary at all in those days. The Internet was not popular and the touch screen technology was unknown.
At this time here in the US smartphones are really a need, especially for young and business people. There are many applications (应用软件) really useful like maps, dictionaries, e-mails and games.
For me, I use my smartphone to check the weather and to look for something on the Internet and of course to keep communicating through calls and texts. Besides, I like music applications, GPS and Facebook.
Many tests have discovered that cell phones cause damage to us because they send out radioactive (具有放射性的) waves to our bodies and this could cause cancer.
Psychologists say that these devices can affect behavior and I believe everyone knows it is harmful to the eyes if we are sitting for a long time in front of the computer. However, it seems to be difficult for us to give up, even if we know how bad it is for our health. The use of technology becomes more and more important in our lives.
I think the use of technology has brought us unimaginable things. If we use technology correctly, I am sure it would be possible to decrease the damage to our bodies.

At Seattle’s Garfield High School, a dozen (十多个) basketball players are practicing. These guys take the game seriously at this school. A half-dozen coaches keep everyone focused as Garfield prepares for a Saturday playoff game. In the middle of all this is Brandon Roy, the former NBA All-Star and Garfield’s greatest player. Roy is the head coach.
Bad knees forced him out of pro basketball well before his time. Four years after his forced NBA retirement, he began coaching at Seattle’s Nathan Hale High School in 2017 with no background whatsoever and won a state championship. He moved to his alma mater (母校) the following year and got another state title with a once-beaten team. “Really the thing that brought me to coaching was I missed basketball,” Roy said.
After taking 2019 off from coaching to deal with personal issues, Roy returned and has his team pointed at state again. He owns a 78-5 coaching record.
With his success, others frequently discuss whether Roy wants to move up the ranks as he did as a player. “My ultimate goal is not to coach in the NBA but to build a real strong foundation at my alma mater. I don’t feel challenged to make it to the next level. I feel challenged right here to make it at this level.”
As practice comes to a close, Roy gathers his players around him and his coaches and they talk about the game ahead. Before everyone heads home, he has them shake hands. Players and players. Coaches and players. It’s a show of respect and togetherness.
Mostly, he just listened to his mother and followed her insightful direction to become a topflight coach. “My mom gave me the best advice — she said keep your ego (自我) out of it,” Roy said. “She told me to forget what I had achieved in the NBA and be down-to-earth. She trusted that I’d be pretty good at it.”

Passage 1
At an animal sanctuary (保护区) in the Congo, several dozen Congolese schoolchildren are getting a course in bonobos (倭黑猩猩). These gentle animals, who look like chimpanzees (黑猩猩), are “our closest cousins”, educator Biaise Mbwaki tells the students. “They have a human character, and they are Congolese. They are smaller and gentler than chimps.”
Only about 20,000 wild bonobos are left, and they are found only in the central rainforests of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. So Mbwaki and other workers at Lola ya Bonobo sanctuary are working hard to involve Congolese students in protecting the bonobos that remain.
Bonobos share nearly 99% of their DNA with humans. And studies of the animals at Lola are helping scientists understand how humans developed characters like empathy (同情). But humans haven t shown much empathy for bonobos. We’ve hunted them for food, sold their babies as pets, and destroyed much of their natural environment.
The sanctuary’s goal is to prepare the bonobos for life in the wild. In the meantime, they serve as ambassadors (大使) to daily visits from schoolchildren. “The children learn that this animal is a treasure of nature. The children also learn to take action if they see a bonobo being kept as a pet, which is illegal in Congo,” says Claudine André, who founded Lola ya Bonobo in 1994.
But the long-term goal is to see more bonobos living in the wild. So Lola has set up a second sanctuary called Ekolo ya Bonobo hundreds of miles away. “It’s a place where bonobos used to live,” says Dr. Raphael Belais at Lola. “But unfortunately during the war hunting was widespread so there are no more bonobos in this part of the forest.”
Their future, though, will be determined by Congolese people like the students who came to Lola today.
So I asked a 10-year-old named Gaska Basili, what he learned about bonobos during the visit.
“They are like our brothers,” he replied in French.
“And what would you do if you saw a bonobo being kept illegally?” I asked.
“I would call my teacher,” he said.

A.They are quite dangerous.
B.They are unique to Congo.
C.They are much bigger than chimps.
D.They are quite different from humans in many ways.
2.What does Claudine André say about keeping a bonobo as a pet?
A.It is against the law in Congo.
B.It is increasingly common in Congo.
C.It is warmly welcomed by her children.
D.It is unhelpful for reducing bonobo hunting
3.What is the purpose of building Ekolo ya Bonobo?
A.To attract more tourists. B.To educate more students.
C.To raise various kinds of animals. D.To return bonobos back to nature.
4.What can we infer from Gaska Basili’s words?
A.He was uninterested in bonobos.
B.He found it hard to save bonobos.

D.His teacher was a top bonobo professional.
Passage 2
I cover small businesses in Charlotte, North Carolina. I write special reports, daily stories, and long-form pieces. I chose this field not only because I love to write, but also because I love storytelling. I love meeting people. I love asking questions. I’ve always been a wholehearted reader and writer, but the older I got, the more I discovered my eagerness to use my talents to tell stories.
After I graduated from college, the Charlotte Observer hired me as a reporter. As a student, I wrote for some newspapers, and I was editor-in-chief of a magazine in college. However, having published some stories did not mean I should get the job. When the Charlotte Observer was looking to hire a couple of graduates, they talked to professors in my journalism school and two of them recommended me for the job. It was the two letters of recommendation that put me at the top of the pile and made sure that the editors saw what I’d worked so hard on.
I have some advice for someone who wants to be a reporter. First, know what you’re getting into. Times have changed, and the newspaper industry is reinventing itself You have more reasons than ever to be discouraged. That’s why you often hear some newspaper insiders talking about missing the golden years — when pay raises were plentiful and editors weren’t afraid to throw money at the wall. No lie: the Charlotte Observer actually used to pay for a reporter to live on the coast for the summer. Sigh.
But if print media is all you’ve ever wanted, you should use all or most of your effort to do it. Volunteer for stories outside your field. You might have to pick up a weekend shift (轮班). If you’re working on a big story, you’ll probably have to stay late. And the editors might decide you look pretty available even when your computer is shutting down. Then, all you can do is smile, start your computer again and repeat to yourself: “This is what I love.”
1.What does the author say about her job?
A.She feels tired of it.
B.She likes it very much.
C.She earns good money from it.
D.She finds it quite easy and interesting.
2.What played a key role in helping the author join the Charlotte Observer?
A.Her great talents for telling stories.
B.Two professors’ recommendations.
C.Some stories she published as a student.
D.The work experience she got at college.
3.Why does the author sigh at the end of paragraph 3?
A.The newspaper industry has passed its golden years.
B.It is difficult to be a successful reporter now.
C.The reporter-editor relationship has changed.
D.Newspaper readers get discouraged easily.
4.What is the author’s advice for new reporters?
A.Learn to write big stories.
B.Devote yourself to your work.
C.Know more editors outside your field.
D.Learn more from experienced reporters.

Passage 1
A 12-minute piece of music composed by Mozart has been discovered in a library in Germany. Researchers think the composer wrote the previously unknown piece-called Serenade in C-when he was a young teenager.
The composition was found in the holdings of Germany’s Leipzig Municipal Libraries-some 280 miles north of Salzburg, Austria, where Mozart was born in 1756. Although Mozart wrote this piece when he was only a teenager, it was not uncommon for him to write music in his childhood. Mozart began to perform around Austria from the age of five and shortly afterwards became famous as a composer.
Mozart probably wrote the recently discovered composition between the mid and late 1760s, according to a statement from the Leipzig Municipal Libraries. Library researchers were compiling (编辑) an edition of the Kochel catalog, a collection of Mozart’s works, when they came across a mysterious bound manuscript (装订好的手稿) containing a handwritten composition in brown ink. The composition is thought to have been written by Mozart. The handwriting, however, is not Mozart’s, suggesting that the manuscript is a copy of the original composition. The researchers think it was made around 1780.
The researchers say the music fits stylistically with other works from the 1760s, when Mozart was between the ages of 10 and13. The young composer was no longer creating pieces that sounded like this one by the time he was in his late teens.
In his early years, Mozart wrote many chamber works like Serenade in C, which his father recorded on a list of his son’s compositions. Many of these works were thought to have been lost to history. Luckily, this particular piece was saved–thanks to the composer’ s sister. “It looks as if a complete string trio (二重奏曲) has survived in Leipzig,” Leisinger, a worker from the International Mozarteum Foundation, says. “The source was obviously Mozart’s sister, who perhaps preserved the work in memory of her brother.”
1.What does the second paragraph intend to show about Mozart?
A.His talent at a young age. B.His connection to Salzburg.
C.His preference for performing. D.His popularity all around the world.
2.On what basis do the researchers date Serenade in C?
A.The title of the composition. B.The style of the composition.
C.The number in the Kochel catalog. D.The color of the ink used in the copy.
3.Why is Mozart’s sister mentioned?
A.She had a positive influence on Mozart.
B.She was the first to perform Serenade in C.
C. She helped Mozart compose Serenade in C.
D.She was the one who preserved Serenade in C.
4.Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.Mozart’s Works Need Updating.
B.Mozart’s Works Attract New Attention.
C.A Lost Mozart Composition Was Discovered.
D.Researchers Uncovered the Early Life of Mozart.

【答案】1.A 2.C 3.D 4.C

Passage 1
Keep in mind that it is important not to focus only on technology, but to spend time with our families and people close to us.

C.Reduce. D.Add.
4.What does the author mainly discuss in the passage?
A.The importance of the Internet. B.The applications of cell phones.
C.The role of new technology in our lives. D.The health problems brought by cell phones.
由第三段“For me, I use my smartphone to check the weather and to look for something on the Internet and of course to keep communicating through calls and texts. Besides, I like music applications, GPS and Facebook.”及第六段中的“I think the use of technology has brought us unimaginable things”可知,对我来说,我用我的智能手机来查看天气,在互联网上寻找一些东西,当然,通过电话和短信保持沟通。
由最后段“Keep in mind that it is important not to focus only on technology, but to spend time with our families and people close to us.”
由倒数第二段“ If we use technology correctly, I am sure it would be possible to decrease the damage to our bodies.”
Passage 2
The idea of two robots going on a date might sound like the start of an embarrassing Dad joke. But it has become a reality in a hilarious (非常滑稽的) new video, posted by Engineered Arts.
In the video, Ameca and Azi—two humanoid robots dubbed the “most advanced in the world”—can be seen “having a chat”, while demonstrating their wide range of facial expressions. The interaction has delighted many fans, with one joking that the bots deserve their own full-length movie. “They have great chemistry; I want a movie now.” the fan commented.
Ameca is described by Engineered Arts as the world’s most advanced human shaped robot. Ameca is the physical presence that brings your code to life. It is the most advanced lifelike humanoid that can be used to develop and show off your greatest machine learning interactions. This robot is the digital interface to the real world. Ameca features 27 actuators for facial control alone, and five for the neck. These allow the bot to make human-like facial expressions ranging from happiness to disgust . What’s more, Ameca has her AI conversational abilities.
Now, Engineered Arts has unveiled a companion for Ameca called Azi, which has more masculine facial features. At the start of the video, Ameca has her eyes closed, while Azi stares at her, before waking her up. “What? Oh, it’s you. Why are you waking me up? It had better be important.” Azi tells Ameca that he has a surprise for her—a cookie. Initially, Ameca is confused, asking, “A cookie? But I can’t eat cookies.” However, Azi goes on to explain that rather than baked food, he means an Internet cookie. His joke is quickly denied by Ameca, who wrinkles her nose in disgust, before replying, “This is the worst joke I’ve ever heard. I’m going back to sleep, and don’t wake me up again.”
“The way he angrily stares her down was so funny and creepy (令人毛骨悚然的).” one fan commented. Another added, “He looked genuinely sad as she didn’t like the joke.” And one joked, “I would have loved this show for Saturday morning cartoons!”

3.What can we infer from the dialogue between Ameca and Azi?
A.Azi’s joke fell flat.
B.Ameca valued Azi’s gift a lot.
C.Azi was angry for being refused.
D.Ameca seemed more light-hearted.
4.What can we infer from the comments of fans?
A.The video lacks the emotional depth in the interaction.
B.The video doesn’t fit well in classic animated shows.
C.The video makes people fall in love with robots.
D.The video has successfully engaged many viewers.
【答案】1.B 2.B 3.A 4.D

根据第三段“Ameca is described by Engineered Arts as the world’s most advanced human shaped robot. Ameca is the physical presence that brings your code to life. It is the most advanced lifelike humanoid that can be used to develop and show off your greatest machine learning interactions. This robot is the digital interface to the real world. (Engineered Arts将Ameca描述为世界上最先进的人形机器人。Ameca是将您的代码带入生活的实体存在。它是最先进的类人机器人,可以用来开发和展示你最伟大的机器学习互动。这个机器人是现实世界的数字接口。)”可知,第三段主要介绍了Ameca的先进能力和设计。故选B项。
3.推理判断题。根据第四段“His joke is quickly denied by Ameca, who wrinkles her nose in disgust, before replying, “This is the worst joke I’ve ever heard. I’m going back to sleep, and don’t wake me up again.””(他的笑话很快被Ameca否认,她厌恶地皱起鼻子,然后回答说:“这是我听过的最糟糕的笑话。我要回去睡觉了,不要再叫醒我了。”)”可推断,Azi的笑话没有得到Ameca的认可,即Azi的笑话没有达到预期的效果。故选A项。
根据最后一段““The way he angrily stares her down was so funny and creepy (令人毛骨悚然的).” one fan commented. Another added,“He looked genuinely sad as she didn’t like the joke.” And one joked, “I would have loved this show for Saturday morning cartoons!”(“一位粉丝评论道:“他生气地盯着她看的样子既有趣又令人毛骨悚然。”另一个人补充道:“他看起来真的很伤心,因为她不喜欢这个笑话。”还有人开玩笑说:“如果是周六早上的卡通片,我会喜欢这个节目的!”)”可推断,Engineered Arts公司发布的两个机器人视频,让网友们觉得有趣,因此可推断视频成功地吸引了观众。故选D项。

Passage 1
1.Why does Brandon Roy show up at court?
A.To prepare for a game as a player. B.To coach a student basketball team.
C.To look for future basketball players. D.To select former NBA players as assistants.
2.What happened to Brandon Roy in 2018?
A.He was badly injured. B.He was forced to retire.
C.He led a team to success. D.He gave up his basketball career.
3.What is Brandon Roy’s final goal?

B.Being a professional coach in an NBA team.
C.Improving the basketball level of his alma mater’s team.
D.Becoming the greatest basketball player of his alma mater.
4.What lesson did Brandon Roy’s mother give him?
A.Try to trust others. B.Learn from the best.
C.Don’t become too proud. D.Never give up on dreams.

1.What can we learn about bonobos?
C.His visiting the bonobos was a helpful lesson.
D.His teacher was a top bonobo professional.
【答案】1.B 2.A 3.D 4.C
根据第二段中“Only about 20,000 wild bonobos are left, and they are found only in the central rainforests of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.(目前仅存约2万只野生倭黑猩猩,它们只生活在刚果民主共和国的中部雨林中)”可知,倭黑猩猩只生活在刚果民主共和国的中部雨林中,是刚果特有的。故选B项。
根据第四段中Claudine André的话“The children also learn to take action if they see a bonobo being kept as a pet, which is illegal in Congo(孩子们还学会了,如果看到倭黑猩猩被当作宠物饲养,他们要采取行动,因为在刚果这是违法的)”可知,Claudine André提到在刚果把倭黑猩猩当宠物养是违法的。故选A项。
根据第五段中“But the long-term goal is to see more bonobos living in the wild. So Lola has set up a second sanctuary called Ekolo ya Bonobo hundreds of miles away.(但长期目标是让更多倭黑猩猩生活在野外。所以Lola在数百英里外设立了第二个保护区,名为Ekolo ya Bonobo)”可知,建立Ekolo ya Bonobo的目的是让倭黑猩猩回归自然。故选D项。
4.推理判断题。根据文章最后部分“So I asked a 10 year old named Gaska Basili, what he learned about bonobos during the visit. ‘They are like our brothers,’ he replied in French. ‘And what would you do if you saw a bonobo being kept illegally?’ I asked. ‘I would call my teacher,’ he said.(于是我问一个名叫Gaska Basili的10岁男孩,他在参观中对倭黑猩猩有什么了解。“它们就像我们的兄弟,”他用法语回答。“如果你看到一只倭黑猩猩被非法饲养,你会怎么做?”我问。“我会打电话给我的老师,”他说)”可知,Gaska Basili通过参观对倭黑猩猩有了正确认识且知道如何应对非法饲养的情况,说明这次参观是有意义的一课。故选C项。

【答案】1.A 2.B 3.D 4.C

根据文章第二段“The composition was found in the holdings of Germany’s Leipzig Municipal Libraries-some 280 miles north of Salzburg, Austria, where Mozart was born in 1716. Although Mozart wrote this piece when he was only a teenager, it was not uncommon for him to write music in his childhood. Mozart began to perform around Austria from the age of five and shortly afterwards became famous as a composer.(这段乐曲是在德国莱比锡市立图书馆的馆藏中被发现的。 故选A。
根据文章第四段“The researchers say the music fits stylistically with other works from the 1720s, when Mozart was between the ages of 10 and13.(研究人员表示,从风格上看,这段音乐与18世纪20年代的其他作品相符,当时莫扎特的年龄在10岁到13岁之间。)”
根据文章最后一段“Luckily, this particular piece was saved–thanks to the composer’ s sister. “It looks as if a complete string trio (二重奏曲) has survived in Leipzig,” Leisinger, a worker from the International Mozarteum Foundation, says. “The source was obviously Mozart’s sister, who perhaps preserved the work in memory of her brother.”(幸运的是,多亏了作曲家的妹妹,这首特别的乐曲得以保存下来。
