Andrew Diggs worked as a member of a joint search and rescue team to help find people missing in the flood of the Guadalupe River. While he was searching, he came across an old wooden paddle (船桨) with markings that gave him pause: the year 1962,Greek letters.
It was just another personal item lost among the ruins. But the more he looked at it, the more it felt like a message — someone, somewhere, had loved this object deeply enough to hold onto it for 60 years. That meant something. And after everything that had already been taken by the flood, it was a 1-of-1 piece of memorial lost in the chaos. He knew he couldn’t let this be one more thing lost to time. He made it his mission to find its owner.
That mission led him to Tom Schulze, who had given the paddle to his wife when they went to a University of Texas Formal Dance in 1962. It had been hanging in his daughter’s house — more than 3 miles from where it was found — but the house was heavily damaged in the flood.
When reunited with the paddle, Tom called it a bright spot in a time of loss and suffering. To him, it wasn’t just wood and paint. It was family. History. Resilience (韧性). Tom expressed his gratitude to Diggs and a promise that he would never clean it up and would do something to preserve it as a reminder of that night of disaster.
Diggs had never been very emotional about material things but a minimalist, who believed memories live in heart. That has changed, though. The stories behind the paddle made him realize it was a physical thing that could remind people of so many good times. He had seen so many small things that he previously would have considered insignificant, but now he can see what they mean to people.
4 What did Diggs do with the paddle?
A. He removed its markings. B. He kept it for himself.
C. He donated it to the museum. D. He returned it to its owner.
5. Why did Tom decide to keep the paddle as it was?
A. To preserve its paint. B. To keep it as a witness.
C. To repair it for later use. D. To maintain its commercial value.
6. What has changed for Diggs?
A. His ambition for the future. B. His daily routine of work.
C. His attitude to physical things. D. His appreciation of life meaning.
7. What is the best title for the passage?
A. A Narrow Escape B. A Huge Disaster
C. A Flood Rescue Mission D. A Rediscovered Treasure
D 5. B 6. C 7. D
根据第三段“That mission led him to Tom Schulze, who had given the paddle to his wife when they went to a University of Texas Formal Dance in 1962. (这次任务让他找到了Tom Schulze,1962年,Tom Schulze在参加德克萨斯大学正式舞会时把船桨送给了他的妻子。)”以及第四段“When reunited with the paddle, Tom called it a bright spot in a time of loss and suffering. (当再次看到船桨时,Tom称它为在失落和痛苦时期的一个亮点。)”可知,Diggs找到了船桨的主人Tom Schulze,并将船桨归还给了他。故选D项。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“To him, it wasn’t just wood and paint. It was family. History. Resilience (韧性). Tom expressed his gratitude to Diggs and a promise that he would never clean it up and would do something to preserve it as a reminder of that night of disaster. (对他来说,它不仅仅是木头和油漆。它是家庭、历史和韧性。Tom向Diggs表达了感激之情,并承诺他永远不会清理它,会采取措施保护它,作为那场灾难之夜的纪念。)”可知,Tom决定保持船桨的原样,是为了将其作为那场灾难之夜的见证,保留其背后的家庭、历史和韧性等意义。故选B项。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Diggs had never been very emotional about material things but a minimalist, who believed memories live in heart. That has changed, though. The stories behind the paddle made him realize it was a physical thing that could remind people of so many good times. (Diggs从来不是一个对物质事物很情绪化的人,而是一个极简主义者,他相信记忆存在于心中。不过,这已经改变了。船桨背后的故事让他意识到,它是一件可以提醒人们许多美好时光的实物。)”可知,Diggs原本是一个极简主义者,对物质事物不太在意,但船桨背后的故事让他改变了对物质事物的态度,开始意识到物品背后的情感价值。故选C项。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,特别是根据第二段“He made it his mission to find its owner. (他决定把找到船桨的主人作为自己的使命。)”以及后文对Diggs寻找船桨主人并成功归还的描述,可知文章主要讲述了Diggs在洪水救援时发现了一个带有特殊标记的旧船桨,他决定寻找其主人并最终成功归还的故事。这个故事围绕着“重获的宝藏”即船桨展开,因此D项“A Rediscovered Treasure (重获的宝藏)”最符合文章主旨,适合作标题。故选D项。
C
Language is not just a tool for communication; it’s also a playground for the mind. English, in particular, is famous for its rich vocabulary and influence from many different languages, which provides a great basis for creativity and humor. One example of this is the use of puns — the clever or humorous use of a word that has more than one meaning, or of words that have different meanings but sound the same.
Puns can be sorted into different types. Homophonic puns rely on word pairs that sound alike but have different meanings, like “A bicycle can’t stand on its own because it’s two-tired.” Homographic puns use words that are spelled the same but have different meanings and sometimes different pronunciations, for example, “I can’t bear the weight of that bear.”
Compound puns often combine homophonic and homographic elements, creating even more complex wordplay, for example, “I was struggling to figure out how lightning works, but then it struck me.”
The history of puns in English literature and culture is rich and interesting. Following their development shows how language, culture, and humor have changed over time. Puns have been a part of English literature from the early days, appearing in medieval (中世纪的) texts and Shakespeare’s plays, often used for humor or to show double meanings. During the Victorian Era. strict social norms promoted the use of puns, as they allowed people to comment on issues cleverly while avoiding directness. Today, puns are widely used in advertising, television, and social media, reflecting how English wordplay adapts to different contexts and media.
People’s opinions of puns have changed throughout history. Once seen as a sign of cleverness, puns were sometimes looked down on as low-level humor. However, in recent years, they’ve regained popularity, largely because of the Internet and social media, which allow for quick sharing and creativity in pun-based humor.
8. What can we learn from paragraph 1?
A. Language is difficult to learn.
B. Language develops over time.
C. Language serves different social purposes.
D. Language has a creative and playful nature.
9. Which of the following contains a homographic pun?
A. You can call a bee from America a USB.
B. Six is afraid of seven because seven ate nine.
C. Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana.
D. I only know 25 letters of the alphabet; I don’t know Y.
10. What was the major purpose of using puns in the Victorian Era?
A. To break social rules. B. To express ideas indirectly.
C. To spread different opinions. D. To make communication easier.
11. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The rise and fall of the popularity of puns.
B. The new changes of language in recent years.
C. The influence of social media on modern humor.
D. The link between puns and social communication.
D 9. C 10. B 11. A

D
Have you ever seen an animal video online that made you stop and wonder? Videos showing a wolf taking care of a rabbit, or a lion walking calmly through a small town are now spreading widely. This is possible because of AI technology. However, scientists warn such popular videos may hurt real wildlife protection and spread wrong ideas about nature.
A study in Conservation Biology points out that AI-generated animal videos create an untrue world, leading to wrong ideas about animal behavior and widening the gap between people and nature. Co-author José Guerrero-Casado stresses the danger of false (虚假的) information. For example, videos showing birds killing “bad” snakes might make people less willing to protect snakes, and create false ideas about animals that are already in danger.
The effect on children is especially worrying. These videos can give them wrong ideas about how people and animals really get along. When children discover that real-world animals do not act as they do in these made-up videos, it can have the opposite result, finally making them feel less connected to nature. This risk grows as young people increasingly turn to social media for information.
So, how can one recognize these videos? Experts suggest looking for a few signs: unnatural animal movements that appear too smooth or seem impossible in real life; light and shadows that do not look quite right; and small details like fur or feathers that appear unclear or repeat in an unusual way.
To deal with these risks, the research team suggests putting more effort into education, like teaching media literacy (素养) in schools. As another co-author Francisco Sánchez says, the goal is to make sure “children learn early that there are no lions living here.” While they think this is important, the researchers also say that school lessons alone cannot stop the spread of false information made by AI. This leads to an important question about who else in society needs to help solve this problem, if school education is not enough.
12. How does the author present the issue in the first paragraph?
A. By giving examples. B. By making a comparison.
C. By quoting an expert. D. By sharing an experience.
13. What can be inferred about AI-generated animal videos?
A. They make children love animals less. B. They mainly focus on species in danger.
C. They may make animals seem dangerous. D. They create a false understanding of nature.
14. According to paragraph 4, which is most probably an AI-generated video?
A. A parrot with clear feathers. B. A cat with natural shadows.
C. A dog with unusual marks. D. A frog with extremely smooth jumps.
15. What will the author most probably discuss next?
A. The media literacy lessons. B. The duties of social media.
C. The popularity of such videos. D. The threats to wildlife protection.
A 13. D 14. D 15. B

根据第四段“So, how can one recognize these videos? Experts suggest looking for a few signs: unnatural animal movements that appear too smooth or seem impossible in real life; light and shadows that do not look quite right; and small details like fur or feathers that appear unclear or repeat in an unusual way. (那么,如何才能辨别出这些视频呢?专家建议寻找一些迹象:留意一些异常的动物动作,这些动作看起来过于流畅,而在现实生活中是不太可能出现的;还要留意光线和阴影的分布是否不太自然;还有一些细微之处,比如毛发或羽毛的呈现不够清晰,或者呈现出一种不寻常的重复现象)”可知,“极其流畅的跳跃”属于AI生成视频的典型特征。故选D。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“This leads to an important question about who else in society needs to help solve this problem, if school education is not enough. (如果学校教育还不够,这就引出了一个重要问题:社会上还有谁需要帮助解决这个问题)”可知,作者接下来最有可能讨论除了学校之外,其他社会主体(如媒体、政府等)的责任。“The duties of social media. (社交媒体的责任)”属于社会主体责任的范畴。故选B。

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
I live in a small but lovely neighborhood. Our house is neither large nor luxurious, but it has a fairly big garden. My father loves his garden. He planted some seeds in it and took good care of the plants, watering them, applying fertilizer, weeding and getting rid of bugs. He was never tired of doing all that stuff. But at that time, I didn’t understand why working in the dirt excited him so much.
Unfortunately, in the summer vacation before senior high school, my father was seriously injured in an accident. He had to stay in bed for a while. My mother had several business trips, so she couldn’t take care of the garden. I didn’t want my father to worry. I said that I would take care of his garden until he recovered. I assumed that the little plants would continue to grow as long as they had water, and luckily it rained fairly often, so I didn’t think much about the garden.
One Saturday morning, my father said to me, “Christine, the vegetables should be about ready to be picked. Let’s have a salad today!” I went out to the garden and was upset to see that many of the lettuce (生菜) leaves and carrots had been half eaten by bugs. There were hundreds of bugs all over them!
I panicked for a moment but then I quietly went to the nearest supermarket to buy some vegetables. When I was making the salad, my mother came home and saw the bag from the supermarket in the kitchen. I was embarrassed and admitted, “Dad would like a salad, but the garden is a disaster. I don’t want to disappoint him, so I went to the store and bought some vegetables.” My mother smiled, saying, “Honey, you know what is the right thing to do.”
Paragraph 1
My father seemed very pleased when I took the salad to him.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2
Feeling guilty, I decided to do the right thing.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
My father seemed very pleased when I took the salad to him. “It looks so good. Your salad makes my mouth water,” Dad couldn’t wait to try it. He forked a piece into his mouth and chewed slowly, his face spreading in a satisfied smile. Giving me a thumbs-up, he said, “Little did I know you are so good at gardening. You are a man of your word.” My father kept praising me, which made my ears burning. Feeling bad about what I had done, I forced a bitter smile. How could I cheat my father?
Feeling guilty, I decided to do the right thing. With tears welling up in my eyes, I told my father I didn’t live up to his expectations and that the garden was a mess. To my surprise, instead of scolding me, my father patted me on the shoulder gently and told me to turn to him if I needed any help. Under his guidance, I learned to apply fertilizer, weed and remove bugs. The vegetables became better and better day by day, and so did my father. I began to enjoy taking care of vegetables and I finally understood my father’s pleasure of working in the dirt.

4. What did Diggs do with the paddle?

C Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana.

Co-author José Guerrero-Casado stresses the danger of false (虚假) information.
