Dear Jim,
Great to hear from you and know that you take an interest in traditional Chinese clothing. As for my favorite, it has to be hanfu, which features a long gown with loose sleeves, a high collar, and a wide belt at the waist.
I fall in love with hanfu for its graceful style. Hanfu also has an important cultural significance in China. Wearing hanfu inspires me to learn about the culture and history behind the clothing.
I hope my introduction can offer you a glimpse of the charming Chinese culture. If you have any more questions, feel free to write back to me.
Now, Julie peeked out behind the stage curtain and the theatre was full. A wave of nervousness swept over her. “You’re a fantastic dancer. This is just stage fright,” she comforted herself. Julie took deep breaths. The music began and she twirled on to the stage. Her shoes tapped lightly on the stage floor, her arms flowing like an arc. As she danced, she forgot all about the audience. A slight smile tugged at her lips as she finished a perfect landing. All the years of hard practices melted away. In that moment, there was only her, the music, and the dance she’d waited a lifetime to share.
Bowing at the end, she saw her family. They were on their feet, clapping and cheering. The audience in the theatre also burst into thunderous applause. “You were fabulous!” her husband beamed, hugging her afterwards. Their daughter joined in the group hug. “You were always a better ballerina than me,” Kirsty appeared, smiling. Julie was finally able to sign up for ballet lessons when she was 40. “Mum, let’s go home to celebrate your success,” her daughter bubbled with excitement. Linking arms with her daughter, Julie hoped she’d shown her that it was never too late to follow your dreams.

M: Good morning and welcome to City Football Club.
I’d like to give you some useful information about your visit to the stadium today and then we’ll start the tour. I can see lots of children here today, so just to let mums and dads know a few things. The stadium has lots of stairs and the players’ tunnel is very dark. Please don’t let your children wander off on their own, even for a minute. We don’t want any accidents or anyone getting frightened.
Cameras are permitted everywhere and you can take pictures of your child taking a shot. It’s very hot and sunny out on the field today. You can get food and drink at the cafe and I really recommend the healthy lunch boxes for children. Also in the cafe, children are invited to do a football themed drawing. We’ll pick the best one at the end of the afternoon, so don’t forget to put your name and contact details on the back. That way if you’ve left the stadium before then, we’ll send your prize, but sadly we can’t return drawings.

I opened my car window and called out “Ma’am! Ma’am!” The only lady in the parking lot looked around until she saw me. “I just wanted to tell how nice you look today,” I said. “The colors you have on are beautiful on you.” Her face registered surprise for a second, and then she smiled. “Thank you!” she called back. Her final steps to her car seemed lighter, and I smiled to myself.
I grew up with very few cheerleaders in my own life. When I was in the middle of fighting a battle for my life, I had been confirmed depression, along with anxiety. It has taken many years and more effort and determination than I thought I was capable of recovering from this illness. With no cheerleaders in my court, I fought this battle alone. I am proud of the progress I have made thus far. There are times when I thought, if only I had had someone to hold me and say, “Susan, I believe in you. You can do this, and I’ll be there every step of the way.” I wonder how much sooner I would have recovered. I’ll never know.
So I have made it a point in recent years to praise people, especially women and girls. Instead of just thinking that someone looks nice or did a great job, I say it out loud. It doesn’t take long, and it’s easy. So, I wonder, why don’t more people do this? As women, we have learned from our role models to be quiet. We downplay our own achievements even when we do receive a rare compliment. Now, when I compliment someone and she denies, I say to her, “Just say thank you.”
Most women are relieved that they don’t have to deny the compliment; they can accept the praise without guilt.
Cheerleading doesn’t require any skills. It only takes a few seconds, although you do have to remind yourself to do it. Eventually, it becomes a habit.
24. How did the lady feel after hearing the author’s praise?
A. Delighted. B. Anxious. C. Relaxed. D. Worried.
25. What made the author become a cheerleader?
A. Her experience. B. Her habit.
C. Her personality. D. Her ambition.
26. What does the author hope when she praises someone?
A. She can be rewarded. B. She can be appreciated.
C. They can accept the praise. D. They should say something.
27. Which of the following best describes the author?
A. Caring. B. Brave. C. Outgoing. D. Honest.

What is a lifestyle and how is that different from a life? A lifestyle is about brand names and buying identity or fame. Lifestyle gives a false sense of peace and acceptability that comes from others recognizing what you’ve bought into (as well as bought). If your car, clothes, and home are expensive, you’re sophisticated (见过世面的) and stylish. If you have the right kind of job or go to the right social gatherings, then you receive the insincere approval of others. This means that your self-esteem is always at the mercy of others, with no appreciation of you as an individual.
A life, on the other hand, is very different. A life is what you lead when you know what matters most to you. It is very simple and comes from being connected to what you know is important and being willing to put that first, no matter what others may think. When you create a life vs. a lifestyle, your self-esteem comes from what’s inside you, not what others think about you.
Lifestyle is expensive financially and personally, because it costs a great deal to keep up appearances and do what you think is socially acceptable. A life is not expensive. Rather than using personal or financial resources, a life generates energy and staying power. It’s about liberating yourself from the mindless consumption that society expects. It is about making the choices that are in line with your values, instead of using up your bank account or energy for no heart-driven reason.
How can you make the change? Understand the difference between a life and a lifestyle. Analyze your current lifestyle to see what is costing you in money, time, stress, and energy to maintain it. Let go and make room for what is really important to you, what supports you and brings you joy. Remember who you are from within, not what you own!
28. Which of the following examples best explains “what is life about”?
A. We work long hours in a job that we do not enjoy.
B. We focus on what we wear, or what kind of car we drive.
C. We find out what our true beliefs and values are and choose to live by these.
D. We think that how others see us is more important than what we think of ourselves.
29. What method does the author use to explain his opinion in the third paragraph?
A. Making a comparison. B. Giving an example.
C. Giving a definition. D. Giving a reason.
30. To make the change, we need to _______.
A. be directed from within B. be directed from outside
C. be driven by social values D. be driven by others’ opinions
31. What is the author’s purpose of writing this passage?
A. To describe what life is.
B. To introduce what lifestyle is.
C. To promote life instead of lifestyle.
D. To tell the differences between life and lifestyle.
D
Extreme heat often brings extreme wildfires, and this year is no exception, with unprecedented heat waves fueling enormous outbreaks of fires in the western United States and Canada, as well as across the Mediterranean and in Siberia. But paradoxically, the most intense wildfires can have the opposite effect on temperatures, cooling Earth's surface both regionally and globally.
Thick wildfire smoke can temporarily block sunlight near the ground, causing regional temperatures to drop by several degrees. Wildfire smoke can also have global cooling effects by making clouds in the lower atmosphere more reflective or blocking sunlight in the upper atmosphere, similar to what a volcanic eruption does.
The effect is far too small to counteract human-caused global warming; researchers say it's too early to predict what it means for the broader climate system. But with fire seasons growing more intense around the world and triggering a range of extreme fire weather in North America and elsewhere, the search for answers is growing increasingly urgent.
Smoke particles act as seeds for water vapor to form clouds that are smaller and reflect more sunlight. While smoke tends to rain out of clouds fairly quickly, the Australian bushfires raged for months, pumping more and more cloud-brightening smoke into the atmosphere. “It's not a big effect, but when you integrate over the entire Southern Ocean, it adds up," one of the researchers says.
While this research highlights the cooling effects of smoke in the lower atmosphere, on occasion, wildfire smoke can reach even higher altitudes into the stratosphere, the layer that starts about 10 miles up. There, it can have additional effects on the climate. Smoke reaches the stratosphere when heat from a powerful wildfire creates an updraft that combines with moisture
in the atmosphere to generate towering thunderclouds.
However, scientists have only recently begun studying these effects. “We might still be in the infancy of understanding how large and how important the effects of these wildfires are," scientists say.
32. What probably causes extreme wildfires to cool the earth globally?
A. Extreme wildfires can result in volcanic eruption.
B. Wildfire smoke covers sunlight above the ground forever.
C. The smoke blocks less sunlight in the higher atmosphere.
D. The clouds in the lower atmosphere reflect more sunlight.
33. What does the underlined word “raged" probably mean in Paragraph 4?
A. Spread. B. Stopped. C. Released. D. Strengthened.
34. What can we infer from the text?
A. Scientists need further studies of the effects of wildfires.
B. Extreme wildfires are the consequence of global warming.
C. Wildfire smoke means a lot to the climate system of the earth.
D. Smoke at higher altitudes has the most impact on cooling earth.
35. Where does the text probably come from?
A. A science fiction. B. A research report.
C. A geography textbook. D. A science magazine.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
People say fortune favors the brave, but taking a leap is easier said than done. 36
·Embrace strategic risk.
One of the biggest misconceptions about risk-taking is that if something feels uncomfortable, it’s a sign to back away. But researches have taught us this: 37 Ask yourself, “Does this risk match my values? Is it moving me toward something I care about?” If yes, expect some embarrassment. The biggest payoffs live just past that initial awkward phase.
· 38
Many of us have grown too afraid of taking risks—maybe because one risk made us embarrassed. A good way to feel less scared of risks is to ask yourself, “What’s one small thing I can do to get used to not knowing what will happen?” Start with bite-size, winnable risks, like speaking up in a meeting, volunteering for a project slightly outside your wheelhouse.
·Breathe in bravery.
Breathe out fear. 39 In other words, taking a few deep breaths helps regulate anxiety. Another easy way to stretch your risk-taking muscles is by copying someone you admire. Imagine them in your shoes and how they’d approach your challenge. How would they talk, walk or hold themselves? Even standing tall sends a signal to your brain that “you’ve got this”.
·Forgive yourself.
We all have moments when we don’t do the thing that will help us grow. And that’s okay! Instead of beating yourself up, forgive yourself because you’re human. 40 Being kind to yourself may just be the best way to step forward toward a braver version of yourself.

Julie twirled (旋转) in her white ballet costume. She couldn’t believe, at 40, she was going to fulfil her dream of becoming a ballerina in tonight’s show.
Tying her ballet shoe ribbons, she remembered that moment. When she was 11, she’d been fascinated by the graceful dancing and beautiful costumes in Swan Lake on TV. So she had decided to be a ballerina instead of a nurse when she grew up. Back then, her mum shook her head. “Sorry, love, we can’t afford ballet lessons.” Julie tasted disappointment.
Next day, she peeked (偷看) through the window of the local dance school and tried to follow the routines. But without a pole to hold on to, she fell over and hurt her knees. She struggled to get up and continued to copy the girls, stretching her arms in an arc (弧形).
She noticed Kirsty from her school in the class. “Will you teach me?” Julie begged. Kirsty blinked. “I’m not sure I’ll remember the steps when the teacher isn’t showing us what to do.”
It turned out Kirsty was a hopeless teacher. But the girls giggled and became firm friends.
Afterwards, they often practised in the park. Julie listened to ballet music in her bedroom every day, doing complex dance moves. “Julie, please turn down that music. It’s giving me a sore head,” her mum complained. Julie loved the music for the ballet. She couldn’t understand how her mum didn’t appreciate the emotions in it. Kirsty wasn’t a fan either. “I’d rather listen to pop tunes. I asked grandma if you could take my lessons instead of me, but she said no.” Julie hugged her thoughtful friend. “Thanks for asking.”
Kirsty pointed to a bruise (淤青) on her arm. “Ballet may not help my clumsiness (笨拙) anyway.” “What happened?” Julie asked. “I crashed into the piano at my ballet lesson.” They both burst out laughing.
