(1)Tom knelt down and patted the dog.
(2)The singer glanced at the audience, took a deep breath and began to sing.
(3)My mother gathered me in her arms and whispered to comfort me.

(4) Widening his eyes in extreme horror, Sheldon fled away, screaming.“Mom, help!”
IHe finally found his way into the forest, cxhausted but excited.
She paced to her bedroom and dressed herself with the greatest care.

I had been swimming competitively for five years and was ready to quit because I felt I was horrible at it. I was often the only African American at a swim competition. I kept receiving “Honorable Mentions”. Any athlete knows that you don’t want to have a bookshelf full of “Honorable Mentions”, which you get just because you showed up.
One summer day, the day before a big swim meet, I decided to break the news to my grandma that I was quitting the swim team. When I told her of my desire to quit swimming, she looked me into my face, saying firmly but warmly: “Baby, remember these words:’ A quitter never wins and a winner never quits.’ Your grandfather didn’t raise losers or quitters. You go to that swim meet tomorrow, and you swim like you are a grandchild of mine, you hear?” I was too afraid to say anything but “Yes, ma’am.”
The next day we arrived at the swim meet late, missing my group of swimmers in the 15/16 age group. My coach insisted I be allowed to swim with the older group. I knew she was including me in the race so our long drive would not be wasted, and she had no expectations whatsoever that I would come in anything but eighth place and only that because there were not nine lanes.
As I was mounting(走上) the board, all the other girls looked at me. I quickly noticed that these girls were here to do one thing—beat me! All of a sudden my grandma’s words rang in my head:” Quitters never win and winners never quit. You swim like you are a grandchild of mine.Quitters never win and winners never quit....” “Yes, grandma, I will swim like I am a grandchild of yours.” I said to myself.

who I; my grandma; my coach; the other girls
when one summer’s day, the day before a big swim meet
where the swim meet
why I missed my group of swimming in the 15/ 16 age group and had to swim with the older 17/18 age group.

18
What’s the genre of the passage?
Narration(记叙文)
Argumentation(议论文)
Exposition(说明文)
Read for the genre
续写第一段的段首语“SPLASH!I swam harder than I had ever swum before(扑通一声!我游得比以前任何时候都努力).”以及第二段的首句“It was then that I heard the claps and cheers around me(就在那时,欢呼声和掌声淹没了我),”可知,第一段应写“我”的比赛全程(全力以赴十心理活动), 以及抵达终点(touched the wall)过程中的所做、所感。
(After the first flip turn, had a half-body length lead over the other girls)——对手加速(they sped up and narrowed the gap)、局面落后——感到疲惫(felt tired)、奶奶的话在耳边响起(the powerful words of my grandma echoed again in my ears)[照应前文]——自我突破(used every last bit of strength to swim)到终点(touched the wall) 焦急等结果(waiting anxiously)。
It was then that I heard the claps and cheers around
me.”可知,第二段应写“我”所取得的成绩(at the top of the list)以及教练的反应(ranto me and hugged me tightly)以及“我”的反应,动作+情感和心理like a dream.weeping tears of joy, replaced the “Honorable Mentions” on my shelf (协同首段)], 最后升华主题厂“Yes. Grandma, you're right. Quitters never win and winners neverquit.”(协同前文提到的奶奶的这句话)]。

A MOTHER’S DAY SURPRISE
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a. m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.
