Kathy Ho teaches high school inside Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford(LPCH).“Sometimes I don’t like saying that I’m a teacher,” says Ho.“People get in their minds an idea of what teachers do,but that’s not really what it is here.”
“Here” is room 386,where each year, about 500 LPCH patients also become students. The hospital school is free of parents, doctors, and medical procedures. It’s a place of learning.About half of Ho’s students stay for a week or less;others are there for more than a year. Most of Ho’s students will recover, which means that preparing them to return to school is an increasingly important component of care.
Still,in room 386,academics don’t come first.Physical health and mental health are the priority.“If you’re scared about something and thinking only about that, there’s no way you’re going to be able to learn,” Ho says.“I’m a coach,an adviser, and a comforter, and that’s what it means to be a hospital teacher.”
There are up to 30 students at any given time in Ho’s class. She generally works with their regular teachers to get lessons and tests being used at their home schools. Some teachers don’t give the kids any assignments;they express sympathy instead.“I feel like it is a disservice to the kids,” Ho says.“They think their teachers don’t care about their schoolwork.”
Ho recognizes the psychological benefit of helping kids keep up with their peers(同龄人)outside the hospital.“I actually think the medicine is only a small piece for some problems,” says Julie Good, director of pain management services at LPCH.“It’s about problem-solving around what it means to have a full life. Those kids have dreams.School can keep those dreams alive by giving kids a way to learn and grow.”
24.Who does Ho teach at LPCH?
A.Sick children.
B.Young nurses.
C.Medical students.
D.Patients’ parents.
25.What is a characteristic of Ho’s job?

A.Offering regular lessons.
B.Paying extra attention.
C.Assigning no schoolwork.
D.Showing no sympathy.

A.It eases peer pressure.
B.It helps them live in hope.

Researchers recently studied 3,000 middle school students.Among them were 618 teenagers with one parent who lived away from home for long periods of time because of work. The researchers wanted to know how the work of these “fly-in,fly-out” parents might influence the health of their children.
A higher percentage(比例) of teenagers who experienced the long work absence of a parent had emotional(情感的) or behavioral problems compared with those whose parents worked more traditional hours. This supports earlier research finding high percentages of emotional problems in teenagers who often returned to an empty house after school or whose parents were seldom at dinner.
Findings also suggest that parents don’t have to be home all the time to be present in their children’s lives, but it helps to be home at certain times. And the best parental presence for a teenager may sometimes be like a potted(盆栽的) plant. Many parents of teenagers have known this to be true and find ways to be present without trying to start a conversation. One friend of mine quietly does housework each evening in the sitting room where her teenagers watch TV.They enjoy one another’s company(陪伴) without the need to talk.
In fact, many years of research suggests that children use their parents as a safe base from which to explore the world.Studies tell us that young children quietly follow their parents’ movements from room to room, even while carrying on with their own activities.Perhaps our teens, like babies, feel most at ease when their parents are still around. They don’t want to stay away from parents who allow them freedom.
A new school year is at hand,so as parents we could offer our teenagers a “potted flower” as a gift, whose quiet and steady(稳定的) presence will give them a great day.
28.What did the study find about the 618 teens?
A.They had more dinners with their parents.
B.They were more prepared to help themselves.
C.They were more likely to have trouble with their feelings.
D.They showed more dislike for traditional working hours.
29.What is the author’s attitude to her friend’s practice?
A.She doubts it.
B.She supports it.
C.She is worried about it.
D.She cares little about it.
30.What does earlier research say about young kids according to paragraph 4?
A.They prefer to play with babies.
B.They want more freedom from parents.
C.They pay attention to parents’ behavior.
D.They show more interest in new activities.
31.What is the best title for the text?
A.Teens want potted-plant parents
B.Your kids still need conversation
C.Quiet families raise healthier teenagers
D.Parents know little about today’s teenagers
D
As an open-minded parent of a 7-year-old boy,I find out that “yes” is the word I say most frequently in life.I do this because “yes” is a sign of positive living.Saying “yes” means opening myself up to new experiences and inviting new or deeper relationships. However, too much “yes” may leave any one of us feeling powerless to set and keep boundaries(边界) in our lives.
This had been on my mind when The Book of No came across my desk. The book is rich, readable and useful to people who have difficulty in saying “no”.
Susan Newman, the writer of the book, calls people who keep saying “yes” through life “people-pleasers”.Those people often hold long-term expectations that they will care for others and feel sorry to even speak out their own needs when a request comes their way.For people-pleasers,saying “yes” is the way to avoid breaking their relationship with the asker.
So how can we say “no”?The Book of No offers short and simple dialogues for hundreds of situations in which “no” is the right answer. After reading the book,I realised the things that started helping me improve my “no” skills.
For one thing, the “no” dialogues seldom include “I’m sorry” language.Instead, they are simple and clear sentences like “No,I don’t want to go” or “Not without everyone’s help”.I also noticed the sentences generally don’t ask us to say “I can’t”.Instead, they say “I prefer not to...”,“I’m not in a position to...”,or “It won’t work for me to...”.These expressions pay more attention to the person’s needs, not to his ability to respond(回应) to a request.
Do you think this book might be helpful to you? It’s OK if the answer is “no”,but I do highly suggest it for your Positive Reading List shelf.
32.What does the author think of “yes”?
A.Saying “yes” too much is unwise.
B.“Yes” means more possibility to others.
C.“Yes” gives us power to decide our own life.
D.People should say “yes” as much as possible.
33.What are people-pleasers like?
A.They put others ahead of themselves.
B.They are popular among people.
C.They often ask others for help.
D.They are positive in life.
34.What should you say if you don’t want to go to a party according to Newman?
A.I can’t.
B.I’m sorry.
C.I don’t want to go.
D.Not without everyone’s help.
35.What can be the best title for the text?
A.“Yes” and “No”
B.Ways of Positive Living
C.Reasons Why We Should Say “No”
D.Positive Reading List:The Book of No

Reading is a healthy habit that everyone should develop from childhood because of the benefits that come with it. 36 Therefore, take your time and start by reading slowly. The following will discuss the effects of not reading books,so you can basically consider and judge where you are and understand how reading can be beneficial.
37 People who don’t read and don’t like to read find it harder to learn than people who actually read. For example, most students who fail to develop a reading habit find it difficult to get through school. This then leads to students dropping out, which is bad for society.Reading is a habit that strengthens the brain and develops your inborn love for wanting to learn more. Therefore, not being addicted to books closes you off from this.
Narrow mindedness.Reading a variety of books broadens the readers’ mind. Most people who don’t read have a certain narrow mindedness to them that can easily be noticed. 38 When you don’t read, you’re forced to take everything at face value and then create and shape your views in this way.
Low brain power. One advantage of reading is its ability to improve brain function.Reading can help people become better thinkers and use brains more effectively.People who don’t read usually have low brain power because they don’t exercise the brain as much as readers do. 39
Poor imagination.Reading books allows you to tap into your imaginative power. 40 This is important because it expands(拓展)your thought process as well as the ability to understand.People who don’t read books usually are short of the inspiration necessary to create imagination. This makes it difficult to be creative.
A.Learning difficulty.
B.The reason for this is simple.
C.Such exercise strengthens the brain.
D.Inability to fully understand the world.
E.It then makes you picture what you read.
F.It is developed slowly just as any habit would.
G.The ability to read is important in today’s world.

Once, when I was a teenager,my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for the circus(马戏).Finally, there was only one family between us and the ticket counter.
This family made a big impression on me.There were eight children, all probably under the age of twelve. You could tell they didn’t have a lot of money.
Their clothes were not expensive, but they were clean. The children were well-behaved,all of them standing in line,two-by-two behind their parents, holding hands. They were excitedly talking about the clowns, elephants, and other acts they would see that night with their brothers or sisters in a low voice.
One could sense they had never been to the circus before. It promised to be a highlight of their young lives. The father and mother were at the head of the pack, standing as proudly as they could be.The mother was holding her husband’s hand, looking up at him as if to say,“You are my knight in shining armor.”
He was smiling and responding in pride, looking back at her as if to say,“You got that right.” The ticket lady asked the father how many tickets he wanted. He proudly responded,“Please let me buy eight children’s tickets and two adult tickets so I can take my family to the circus.”
The ticket lady gave the price. The man’s wife let go of his hand. Her head dropped, and her lips began to shake. The father leaned a little closer and asked,“How much did you say?”
The ticket lady again quoted the price. The man didn’t have enough money.
How was he supposed to turn and tell his eight children that he didn’t have enough money to take them to the circus?Actually we were not wealthy in any sense. So I understood how the kids would feel.I felt sorry for them.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;

Seeing what was going on,my dad put his hand in his pocket, pulled out a $20 bill and dropped it on the ground.

由Pre-College Program中的“A two-week residential experience featuring noncredit courses”可知,该项目不修学分。
由Pre-College Program中的“The Pre-College Program cost includes...and most entrance fees”可知,该项目的收费包括课程学习、食宿以及课外活动的交通和大部分的门票费用。
由Secondary School Program中的“...which includes fees for two 4-credit courses ($3,050 for each course)... 【语篇解读】本文是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了露西尔·帕卡德儿童医院的教师 Kathy Ho 如何在医院学校中为患病儿童授课,强调医院学校不仅关注学业,更注重学生的身心健康,帮助他们在治疗期间保持对学习和生活的希望。
24.A 细节理解题。根据第二段中的“‘Here’ is room 386,where each year,about 500 LPCH patients also become students.” 故选A项。
第三段中Ho提到“I’m a coach,an adviser,and a comforter,and that’s what it means to be a hospital teacher.”,表明她作为一名医院学校的教师,在工作中同时扮演教练、顾问和安慰者等多重角色。
第四段中提到“Some teachers don’t give the kids any assignments;they express sympathy instead.”,部分老师不布置作业,只表达同情,Ho 认为这对孩子不利。
根据最后一段中Good 的话“School can keep those dreams alive by giving kids a way to learn and grow.”
根据第二段中“A higher percentage of teenagers who experienced the long work absence of a parent had emotional or behavioral problems compared with those whose parents worked more traditional hours.”
根据第三段中“One friend of mine quietly does housework each evening in the sitting room where her teenagers watch TV.They enjoy one another’s company without the need to talk.”和第四段的“Studies tell us...who allow them freedom.”
根据第二段内容和第三段中的“Findings also suggest that parents don’t have to be home all the time to be present in their children’s lives, but it helps to be home at certain times. And the best parental presence for a teenager may sometimes be like a potted plant.” 故选A项。
故选A项。
根据第三段中的“Those people often hold long-term expectations that...to avoid breaking their relationship with the asker.” 故选A项。

36.F 根据上文“Reading is a healthy habit that everyone should develop from childhood because of the benefits that come with it.”可推知,设空句应继续讲述此话题,同时,下文“Therefore, take your time and start by reading slowly.”
根据下文“People who don’t read and don’t like to read find it harder to learn than people who actually read. For example, most students who fail to develop a reading habit find it difficult to get through school.” 故选A项。
38.B 分析可知,上文“Most people who don’t read have a certain narrow mindedness to them that can easily be noticed.”提出了一个现象:大多数不读书的人会思想狭隘,下文“When you don’t read, you’re forced to take everything at face value and then create and shape your views in this way.”
40.E 上文“Reading books allows you to tap into your imaginative power.”

Dear Steven,
How are you?I’m writing to tell you my lifestyle in the new senior high school.
Our school is very beautiful with a big playground. There are green trees and all kinds of sweet flowers all year round. The teachers are very strict with us in studies, but after class, they are friendly and care about us very much.My new classmates are all very excellent and always work very hard. They help me a lot with my lessons as well as many things in my daily life and we get along quite well with each other.
Though the school life is stressful,I am full of confidence.I think with the help of the teachers and classmates,I will make great progress.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
Seeing what was going on,my dad put his hand in his pocket, pulled out a $20 bill and dropped it on the ground. Then he picked it up and tapped the man on the shoulder and said,“Excuse me,sir, this fell out of your pocket.” The man turned around and saw the money. He knew what was going on.He looked straight into my dad’s eyes, took my dad’s hand in both of his, squeezed tightly onto the $20 bill, and with his lip shaking and a tear running down his cheek,he replied,“Thank you, thank you, sir. This really means a lot to me and my family.”
That day my father and I went back to our car and drove home without any tickets. We didn’t go to the circus that night. When I asked Dad why he did so,Dad said,“My child,it was a desperate, heartbreaking and embarrassing situation for a father.Surely he wasn’t begging for a handout, but he reminded me of my father, when I was young.” He paused for a while,as if wandering in his memory.“We should appreciate what we have obtained from life and seize every opportunity to help others. We didn’t go to the circus tonight, but we didn’t go without anything. Now,do you want an ice cream?”
