The ground shook suddenly. Houses moved, and
people ran into the streets. With people running around, Zhang Heng
stood still, thinking quickly. He had seen many scenes (画面) of
5
earthquakes in his life, and each time, people couldn't do anything. But
this time, Zhang Heng decided to find a method. #1.2
After studying the stars, the sky, and the earth for years, Zhang
Heng had an idea—what if there was a machine that could feel
earthquakes before they happened? Without wasting any time, Zhang
Heng began to work on his invention. He used bronze (青铜) to create a
large container (容器) with eight dragon heads, each holding a small ball
in its mouth. At the bottom of each dragon, he placed a frog.
If an earthquake happened, the shaking would cause the ball to fall into
the frog's mouth, showing the direction of the earthquake.
Months of hard work passed. One night, Zhang Heng was ready to
test his invention. Suddenly, the ground vibrated again. His heart raced as
he rushed to the machine. To his surprise, one of the dragon heads
dropped its ball! The ball fell into the frog's mouth, pointing west. Zhang
Heng smiled with excitement. It worked!
A few days later, a strong earthquake hit the west, just as the
seismoscope had shown. People were amazed, and Zhang Heng's
invention saved many lives by giving them a warning.
Though Zhang Heng became famous, he never stopped searching for
answers. He knew that science was a never-ending journey, and he was
always ready for the next challenge.#1.6

B
Robotic dogs have become famous online! A robotic dog being
tested for rubbish transport draws visitors' attention at Taishan Mountain
in Tai'an, Shandong Province. Its main job was to carry heavy things and
rubbish on the mountain and reduce the need for human workers.
Every year, Taishan Mountain receives millions of visitors. These
tourists produce nearly 24,000 tons of waste every year. The terrain
(地形) in the Taishan Mountain makes it harder and more costly to clean
and transport the rubbish because large machines can't be used and the
rubbish has to be collected by hand.
13
This is why the robotic dogs come in! These dogs are introduced
for waste collection tests at Taishan Mountain. The tested robotic dogs
were some of the fastest and most advanced (先进的) industrial-grade
quadruped (四足的) robots on the market. They could cross obstacles
(障碍物) easily, keep good balance, and carry heavy things for a long
time.
Tests were carried out over three days at the base, middle and top
of the mountain. Robotic dogs could make waste transport faster and
more efficient (有效率的) than human cleaners. Each dog is able to carry
30 to 40 kilograms. It can stay balanced and move around things in its
way. During the tests, the robot could reach the top of the mountain in
two hours, while the time for adults without carrying anything is about
four hours. The robot can work for four to six hours on a full charge
(充电量). What's more, the robotic dogs fit over 80 percent of the
mountain's terrain.
Many tourists were attracted by these robotic dogs. Wang Yang, a
tourist from Heilongjiang Province, said, “I saw it climbing and took a
photo with it. It's truly amazing.”#1.5
