Last year’s Nobel Prize for Physics was awarded to inventors of LED, now being used around the world. However, more than a billion people in the world still do not have access to electricity. After sunset, most of them use light candles or oil lamps which, in addition to unsteady light, also give off poisonous gas. A company in the Netherlands is trying to change that with its product based on LEDs.
When darkness falls, many kids in the countryside of Haiti, Rwanda, or refugee (难民) camps in Syria read or do their homework by candlelight or a kerosene (煤油) lamp. The open flames sometimes cause fires, while poisonous gas leads to physical problems.
Portable (便携式的) electric light is safer, healthier and now, even cheaper.
“This is the first time that artificial light or solar LED light is now less expensive than kerosene,” said Camille van Gestel, head of a Dutch company called Waka Waka.
LEDs are a safe and efficient (有效率的) electronic light source that shines with bright white light.
Van Gestel said Waka Waka is the most efficient solar-powered light and phone charger in the world today. When fully charged, it shines for up to 16 hours It is affordable and its battery (电池) lasts for a long time. It can be set up on any flat surface. It is intended for the poorest of the poor.
“Our primary target is to reach people who live on less than two dollars a day,” said Van Gestel.
Van Gestel said his company operates like any other business, but some of the money made from selling its products is used to make Waka Waka lights affordable to poor people. He said the project is supported by international non-government organizations. “The International Rescue Committee was one of the first to actually take the Waka Waka power into Syria, to provide light and power to Syrian refugees, and now the Waka Waka is the most valued non-food item in Syria,” said Van Gestel.
In the past 24 months, the company has sold around 300000 units in places such as Syria, Haiti, Rwanda,Indonesia and the Philippines. Its goal is to reach 1.2 billion by 2030.
41.The product based on LEDs can be accepted in countries such as Syria mainly because _______.
A.it won’t cause fires B.it gives off steady light
C.it is cheaper than kerosene lamps D.it doesn’t produce poisonous gas
42.Who is the product based on LEDs aimed at?
A.Poor people. B.Rich farmers
C.International companies D.Non-government organizations
43.What do we know about the Dutch company?
A.Its product has won the Nobel Prize B.It sells light candles and oil camps
C.It gives lots of money to kids in poor areas D.It has cooperation with non-government organizations
44.What does the underlined word “Waka Waka” refer to in the last but one paragraph?
A.Oil B.A kind of lights C.A company D.A type of energy

While developing an app a couple of years ago, Aryan Nangia, a Class 12 student at Pathways School, Gurugram, India, saw some problems. “Over the course of time, I noticed that many of my friends had great ideas for things they wanted to build, but they only remained at the idea level. They had trouble doing marketing, dealing with money, and growing their projects, making it difficult for actual products to appear. For many teenagers, this is a common situation,” Aryan said.
Therefore, Aryan created LaunchPad — a free digital platform (数字平台) aimed at helping students learn necessary skills for the future and build real-world projects. “We waited a month to launch (发布) it because I wanted everything to look just right. I was afraid to fail. But the first step to any creation is never perfect. Once you put it out there and start getting suggestions and reviews from the users, you’ll make improvements accordingly,” Aryan said.
Through videos, expert interviews, and presentations, LaunchPad helps students learn these skills in a fun way. The platform also offers guidance programs, where students are paired with volunteers who guide them based on their interests. For example, a student interested in robots might be connected with a volunteer who is good at that area. It’s really about providing first-hand advice and instruction during their project-building journey.
Armaan, a 14-year-old student at Pathways School, developed skills in design thinking, business plans, and problem-solving through LaunchPad. He tells how the program’s focus on soft skills, like storytelling and communication, has allowed him to better present himself. “I’m working on developing skills that will aid me in choosing the right career,” he said, with a particular interest in computer science.
Looking back on his journey, Aryan can’t wait to share his experience with other students. “ Sometimes, we overthink our ideas. The best projects often come from simple ideas that you deeply care about, and the best way to learn is by doing. Focus on what excites you, and you’ll be amazed at what you can create,” he said.
46.Many of Aryan’s friends found it difficult to ________.
A.gain design skills B.put ideas into practice
C.balance study and projects D.understand customers’ needs
47.What does Aryan consider important to his platform?
A.Learning from other teams’ failures. B.Making progress based on users’ opinions.
C.Planning every part of product development. D.Collecting students’ questions before launching.
48.What does paragraph 3 stress about LaunchPad’s teaching method?
A.It follows a fixed schedule. B.It depends on online games.
C.It allows personalized support. D.It requires high-tech teaching tools
49.How does Armaan feel about his learning through LaunchPad?
A.Valuable. B.Interesting. C.Difficult. D.Boring.
50.What is Aryan’s suggestion for other students?
A.Focus on creative ideas. B.Act on your own interests.
C.Open your mind to new challenges. D.Think twice before making decisions.
D
As is known to everyone, the options we make have an effect on our future. Suppose I am an intelligent student with good marks. But on the other hand, being lazy, I do badly in my examinations. I am refused admission to university and cannot find a good job. The golden future I had imagined will never be. All these are all from a bad choice!
However, your choices affect your future in a way that is a lot more complicated. This is because nearly all the choices you make affect your character. Your character is displayed through your choices, but it is also formed by them. No matter when you make a choice, your character changes or grows, or diminishes depending on whether the decision you made is wise or foolish. Your character is being made by you, bit by bit, choice by choice. And so, you become the sort of person who will make a certain kind of choice in a certain situation.
Some will argue this is not true. After all, the field of human choice is a narrow one. Most of the things that form us in our lives are not subject to choice. We cannot choose when and where to be born, whether our families will be rich or poor, kind or cruel. We cannot even entirely control who we will meet in our lives. With so much that we cannot choose, how can we be said to be responsible for anything?
There is some truth in this. We are thrown into life without any say over the matter, and have little control over most of it. However, we do have some power of choice, and we do control the most important thing of all: how we respond to circumstances. We can choose to keep struggling in hard times, or to give up.
This ability to choose how we behave and respond is a great gift. It is our key to having confidence in the future. It is human nature to fear the future, as the future is unknown. You can’t entirely control what will happen to you tomorrow. But if you have confidence in your character, formed by years of making good choices, then you do know one thing for certain about the future: no matter what happens, you will make a choice that you will be proud of.
At every moment, then, practise forming your character when you make your choices, no matter how small they are. Remember: your choices form your character. And your character determines your future.
51.What example does the author use to illustrate the impact of bad choices on the future?
A.A student who fails to get into university due to laziness despite good academic potential.
B.A person who can’t choose their birthplace and family background.
C.Someone who gives up easily during hard times.
D.An individual who is afraid of the unknown future.
52.What can we infer from the passage?
A.We have no control over any aspect of our lives except making choices.
B.Good character formed by making wise choices gives us confidence in the future.
C.External factors like birthplace and family background have no impact on our life.
D.Small choices in daily life don’t matter in shaping our character.
53.In the author’s opinion, what is the most important thing we can control in life?
A.When and where to be born. B.Whether our families will be rich or poor.
C.How we respond to different circumstances. D.Who we will meet in our lives.
54.According to the passage, why are our choices closely related to our future?
A.Because choices directly decide our social status.
B.Because choices can influence our character which determines our future.
C.Because making choices helps us gain more control over external circumstances.
D.Because every choice we make ensures a successful future.
55.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.The ways to make good choices in different situations.
B.The uncontrollable factors existing in our life.
C.The significant relationship between our choices, character and future.
D.The importance of having confidence in the future.

People suffering from depression (抑郁) or anxiety may make themselves healthy again by doing nice things for others, new research shows.
The study divided 122 people from central Ohio who had depression, anxiety or stress into three groups. The first two groups were asked to follow methods often used in cognitive behavioral therapy (认知行为疗法) (CBT) for depression: planning social activities or cognitive reappraisal (重新评价).
The social activities group was instructed to plan social activities for two days a week. Another group was instructed to write a diary for at least two days each week that helped them recognize their negative ways of viewing stressful situations and change their views in a way that could reduce depression and anxiety. Members of the third group were instructed to perform three acts of kindness — big or small acts that benefit others or make others happy — a day, for two days out of the week.
Research volunteers followed their instructions for five weeks, after which their mental states were recorded. The researchers then checked with the volunteers after another five weeks to see if the methods were still effective. The findings, published in the Journal of Positive Psychology, showed that people in all three groups showed an increase in life satisfaction and a reduction of depression and anxiety levels after the study.
“Compared with social activities and cognitive reappraisal, acts of kindness make people feel more connected to other people,” said David Cregg, who led the study at the Ohio State University. “Social connection is one of the parts of life most strongly linked with well-being or happiness. Performing acts of kindness seems to be one of the best ways to create those connections.”
The research also showed why performing act s of kindness worked so well: It helped people take their minds off what causes their own depression or anxiety. This finding suggests that one view many people have about people with depression may be wrong.
“We often think that people with depression have enough to deal with, so we don’t want to burden them by asking them to help others. But these results run counter to that,” Cregg said.
56.What did the social activities group do in the study? (no more than 10 words)
57.What did the researchers find after ten weeks? (no more than 15 words)
58.Why did performing acts of kindness work so well? (no more than 15 words)
59.What does the underlined part in the last paragraph mean? (no more than 5 words)
60.Of the three methods of reducing depression in the text, which one do you prefer? Please explain. (no more than 20 words).

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen!
It is a great honor for me to attend the International Youth Science and Technology Forum. Today I want to share with you my thoughts about technology and teenagers.
There is no doubt that the progress of science and technology has had a great impact on my study and life. Various online resources and apps have not only made my learning easier and richer, but also enriched my spare time and broadened my horizon. Therefore, as a teenager, who has enjoyed the benefits of technological progress, we should take an active part in scientific and technological innovation, such as academic lectures, science and technology competitions and other practical activities.
Science and technology can shape the bright future. So I hope all teenagers can get involved in scientific and technological innovation activities.

He always made sure I 30 my studies and remained an excellent student. I can honestly say that no other coach has given me as much 31 advice, not just on how to succeed in basketball, but more 32 , on how to succeed in life.
I am truly 33 to have attended a school with such a great person who not only teaches and coaches but also profoundly 34 his students.

52.推理判断题。根据第二段“However, your choices affect your future in a way that is a lot more complicated. And so, you become the sort of person who will make a certain kind of choice in a certain situation.(然而,你的选择对你的未来所产生的影响要复杂得多。这是因为你所做出的几乎每一个选择都会影响你的性格。你的性格通过你的选择得以展现,同时也由这些选择所塑造。无论何时做出选择,你的性格都会随着选择的变化而改变、成长或者衰退,这取决于你所做出的决定是明智还是愚蠢。你的性格是在你一点一滴的选择中逐渐形成的。因此,你会成为在特定情境下会做出某种特定选择的那种人)”以及倒数第二段“You can’t entirely control what will happen to you tomorrow. But if you have confidence in your character, formed by years of making good choices, then you do know one thing for certain about the future: no matter what happens, you will make a choice that you will be proud of.(你无法完全掌控明天会发生什么。但如果你对自己的性格充满信心,这种自信源自于多年来所做的正确选择,那么你就能够确切地知道关于未来的一件事:无论发生什么,你都会做出一个让自己感到自豪的选择)”可知,通过做出明智选择而形成的良好品质会让我们对未来充满信心。故选B。
53.细节理解题。根据第四段“However, we do have some power of choice, and we do control the most important thing of all: how we respond to circumstances. We can choose to keep struggling in hard times, or to give up.(然而,我们确实拥有一定的选择权,并且我们确实能够掌控最重要的事情:我们如何应对各种情况。我们可以选择在艰难时期继续努力奋斗,也可以选择放弃)”可知,在作者看来,在生活中我们能够掌控的最重要的事情是如何应对不同的情况。故选C。
54.细节理解题。根据最后一段“At every moment, then, practise forming your character when you make your choices, no matter how small they are. Remember: your choices form your character. And your character determines your future.(所以,在每一个时刻,当你做出选择时,都要努力塑造自己的性格,哪怕这些选择看起来微不足道。要记住:你的选择塑造了你的性格。而你的性格决定了你的未来)”可知,我们的选择与我们的未来息息相关是因为选择能够影响我们的性格,而性格决定了我们的未来。故选B。
55.主旨大意题。根据最后一段“At every moment, then, practise forming your character when you make your choices, no matter how small they are. Remember: your choices form your character. And your character determines your future.(所以,在每一个时刻,当你做出选择时,都要努力塑造自己的性格,哪怕这些选择看起来微不足道。

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了一项新研究表明,患有抑郁或焦虑的人可以通过为他人做好事来恢复健康,并详细说明了研究的分组、过程、结果及意义。
56.考查细节理解。根据第三段中“The social activities group was instructed to plan social activities for two days a week. (社交活动组被要求每周安排两天的社交活动。)”可知,社交活动组在研究中每周安排两天的社交活动。故答案为They planned social activities for two days a week.
57.考查细节理解。根据第四段中“The findings, published in the Journal of Positive Psychology, showed that people in all three groups showed an increase in life satisfaction and a reduction of depression and anxiety levels after the study. (研究结果发表在《积极心理学杂志》上,显示三组受试者在研究结束后生活满意度均有所提高,抑郁和焦虑水平有所降低。)”可知,十周后研究人员发现三组受试者的生活满意度均有所提高,抑郁和焦虑水平有所降低,即三组受试者的情况均有所改善或三种方法均有效。故答案为People in all three groups felt better. Or: Their methods worked effectively on three groups.
58.考查细节理解。根据倒数第二段中“The research also showed why performing acts of kindness worked so well: It helped people take their minds off what causes their own depression or anxiety. (研究还揭示了为什么行善效果如此之好:它帮助人们转移注意力,不再纠结于导致自身抑郁或焦虑的原因。)”可知,行善效果如此之好的原因是它帮助人们转移注意力,不再纠结于导致自身抑郁或焦虑的原因。故答案为Because it helped people take their minds off what causes their own depression or anxiety.
59.考查词句猜测。根据最后一段中划线词所在句“We often think that people with depression have enough to deal with, so we don’t want to burden them by asking them to help others. But these results run counter to that (我们常常认为抑郁症患者已经承受了太多,所以不想让他们再通过帮助他人来增加负担。但这些结果却与此run counter to)”可知,我们原本认为不应该让抑郁症患者帮助他人,但研究结果却表明这样做是有益的,即与我们的想法相反,所以“run counter to”意为“与……相反”。故答案为Are the opposite of.
60.考查开放题。本题为开放题,言之有理即可。
示例一:根据倒数第三段中David Cregg 所说的“Compared with social activities and cognitive reappraisal, acts of kindness make people feel more connected to other people (与社交活动和认知重新评价相比,善意行为让人们感觉与他人的联系更紧密)”可知,我更喜欢行善,因为这是一种与他人建立联系的简单方式,能让每个人都微笑。故答案为I prefer to perform acts of kindness. It is an easy way to connect with others and make everyone smile.
示例二:根据第三段中“Another group was instructed to write a diary for at least two days each week that helped them recognize their negative ways of viewing stressful situations and change their views in a way that could reduce depression and anxiety. (另一组被要求每周至少写两天日记,帮助他们认识到自己看待压力情境的消极方式,并以一种能够减少抑郁和焦虑的方式改变自己的观点。)”可知,我更喜欢认知重新评价,因为它能让我冷静下来,从不同的角度重新思考糟糕的情况。故答案为I prefer cognitive reappraisal. Because it makes me calm down and rethink the bad situation from a different perspective.

【答案】 Youth & Technology: Shaping Tomorrow
