My older cousin Charlie was always up for an adventure. Then, one day, he had a snowmobile accident that changed his life. The doctors said that he might never walk again. Charlie said they were wrong.
Charlie is a big guy who is more than six feet tall and weighs 260 pounds. His size, along with his black hair, makes him look strong. He likes to wear tight T-shirts to show off. These days, Charlie is wearing baggy clothes to cover up the scars (伤疤) on his legs. It was hard to move around with his crutches (拐杖). The doctors aren’t sure when or if Charlie will ever fully recover (恢复).
For me, the best thing about Charlie is that he doesn’t give up easily. In the beginning, when Charlie was in hospital, he pushed himself hard to practise walking again. When the doctor told Charlie to take a break, my cousin would say, “No way, man! I want to do this now.” Charlie kept pushing himself. Before long he was getting around pretty well without any help. However, I know Charlie.
He’s not going to stop until he can walk without his crutches.
Before the accident, Charlie liked riding his snowmobile and his motorcycle. These days he’s finding other ways to keep active. When the whole family got together during vacation, Charlie couldn’t play on our pickup football team. That didn’t stop him. He did a super job of teaching. My cousin Charlie has taught me two important lessons. First, I realize I should check out all the safety rules before I try something dangerous. Second the best way to get through bad times is to have the right attitude (态度). Charlie’s attitude is just as strong as he is. I believe that someday Charlie will walk the way he did before, just like he says he will.
54.What happened to Charlie?

“We create the smart machines to do the work people can’t or don’t want to do. This is our goal,” Hong said.
It’s not easy to build humanoid robots. “The hardest part is perfecting their movements, like hand motions and walking,” Hong explained. “Objects, such as stairs and doors, are made for people. If robots are to move around and use things in our world, they need to do them like we do.”
Developing a robot follows clear steps. First, the team comes up with ideas that might work before they build it. Then they program the robot’s software (软件). After that, they start to make its metal (金属) parts. Once the robot is completed, the team tests it to see what needs improving.
Hong loves all of his robots. “Our projects, big or small, make the world better,” he said.
14.What does the underlined word “tackle” most probably mean?

16.第五段提出:“‘The hardest part is perfecting their movements, like hand motions and walking,’ Hong explained. ‘Objects, such as stairs and doors, are made for people. If robots are to move around and use things in our world, they need to do them like we do.’”,说明设计人形机器人最大的挑战是完善它们的动作,让它们像人类一样移动和使用物品,因为周围物体是为人类设计的,机器人要像人类一样使用它们。
17.第六段详细说明了制造机器人的步骤:“First, the team comes up with ideas... Then they program the robot’s software...After that, they start to make its metal parts...Once the robot is completed, the team tests it to see what needs improving.”,因此正确顺序是:②提出想法→③编程软件→④制造金属部件→①测试改进。

Oliver decided to leave the workhouse for London. “No one will find me in London,” he thought. On the first day, he walked and walked for twenty miles, then he fell asleep, tired and hungry. He walked for another seven days, begging for food and water. Then in the afternoon, he walked slowly and sadly into a small town near London and sat down to rest. His feet were bleeding (流血) and he was covered in dirt. A boy saw him and came to talk to him.
“Hello, where have you been?” asked the boy.
The boy was about the same age as Oliver, but he was a ________ boy. He had a large hat and he wore a man’s coat, which came nearly to his feet. He was just a dirty little boy but he acted and talked like an adult.
Oliver explained he had walked for a few days and was very hungry.
The boy bought Oliver some food. Then, as Oliver ate hungrily, they talked.
Oliver told the boy that he was going to London and had no place to stay.
“I know an old gentleman who lives in London,” said the boy. “He’ll give you a place to stay for nothing.”
“Really?” said Oliver with his eyes shining brightly.
Oliver was thankful for the boy’s offer. The boy, Jack Dawkins, and Oliver soon became new friends, but Jack’s friends called him the Dodger.
Late that night they reached London. Then Dodger led Oliver to a narrow smelly street, and into a house. They climbed the stairs and went into a room at the top.
Oliver looked around. They were in a large room. The walls and ceiling were black with age and dirt. A man was cooking some food. The man had an ugly face and dirty red hair. There were beds on the floor. Four or five boys, about the same age as the Dodger, sat around a table.
“Fagin,” said the Dodger to the man, “this is my new friend Oliver Twist.” Fagin smiled, then he shook Oliver’s hand and said, “We are very glad to meet you, Oliver.”
After that, they all had supper. Oliver ate a lot and drank a nightcap that Fagin prepared specially for him. Then he fell into a deep sleep with a full stomach and satisfaction (满足).
