Love eating fish, but worry about the tiny bones? Chinese scientists have found an answer. Using gene-editing, they have made a new type of carp (鲫鱼) without the small bones.
This special fish, named “Zhongke No. 6”, was developed by a team at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, reported Xinhua. They found that the “runx2b” gene helps make over 80 tiny bones in the carp. Using special gene-editing “scissors” called CRISPR-Cas9, they cut the runx2b gene precisely. This way, the tiny bones never grow, but the main skeleton (骨架) does, like usual, said online news site Interesting Engineering.
“The carp swims and grows normally and tastes just the same,” Gui Jianfang, the head of the team, told Guangming Daily.
Zhongke No. 6 also grows faster and needs less food than the usual carp. This makes it possible for more products to be made from carp, like fish balls for hotpots, said Guangming Daily.
What’s more, scientists made sure that Zhongke No. 6 cannot have babies. So even if these carp get into the wild, they won’t grow in number and take over the wild fish.
WHAT ARE GENES?
Genes are like orders that tell our bodies how to grow and look. For most life on Earth, genes are made of DNA. You get half of your DNA from your mother and half from your father. That is why you look more like them and your other relatives. At the same time, your genes are also more similar to those of other humans than to those of different animals, like rabbits.
根据材料内容选择最佳答案。
11. Why do Chinese scientists develop the new type of carp?
A. To help the fish live longer in the wild.
B. To make the fish swim faster in the water.
C. To make the fish have more babies than usual.
D. To help people eat fish without worrying about tiny bones.
12. What is TRUE about “Zhongke No. 6”?
A. It has more than 80 tiny bones in its body.
B. It grows more slowly and needs more food.
C. It can swim and grow normally like common carp.
D. It can have many babies in the wild.
13. What does the underlined word “runx2b” refer to?
A. A kind of special gene. B. A new kind of food for fish.
C. A tool to catch fish easily. D. A famous scientist from China.
14. Why can’t Zhongke No. 6 have babies?
A. Because it is not healthy enough. B. Because it is too small to have babies.
C. To stop it from influencing wild fish too much. D. To make it taste better for hotpot food.
15. According to the last paragraph, which of the following can we infer about genes?
A. Genes are only found in human bodies.
B. People’s genes are totally different from their relatives.
C. DNA is the main part that makes up genes for most living things.
D. Humans’ genes are more similar to rabbits’ than to other humans.

【答案】1. D 2. C 3. D 4. B 5. A
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了树木年轮如何记录地球气候信息,以及科学家如何利用年轮研究古代气候。
【1题详解】
第一段(树桩年轮部分)指出:“These rings can tell us how old the tree is, and what the weather was like during each year of the tree’s life.”,这直接说明年轮能告诉我们树的年龄和每年的天气情况。
【2题详解】
最后一段说明原因:“In most places, daily weather records have only been kept for the past 100 to 150 years. So, scientists can use trees to learn about the climate hundreds to thousands of years ago.”,因为日常天气记录的时间跨度很短,所以科学家用年轮研究古代气候。
【3题详解】
第一段(年轮形成部分)说明:“The light-colored rings are wood that grew in the spring and early summer”,浅色年轮代表春季和初夏的生长,对应图中春季(D选项,树木开花、气候温暖的景象)。
【4题详解】
最后一段明确给出:“In most places, daily weather records have only been kept for the past 100 to 150 years.”,说明大多数地方的日常天气记录保存了约100到150年。
【5题详解】
全文围绕树木年轮与气候变化的科学知识展开,属于科普类内容,因此这是一篇科学报告。

A. To help the fish live longer in the wild.
B. To make the fish swim faster in the water.

I hope my partner is a girl. Firstly, she should be good at English, especially speaking, because our play needs clear pronunciation. Besides, she’d better have a good sense of humor to make our performance more lively and attractive. Secondly, I’d like her to be active and creative. An active person can bring energy to our team, and creativity helps make our play more interesting. Finally, being hard-working is important. We will need to practice a lot after school.
