(2025·江西鹰潭二模)When it is the time of the year, London’s plant stores appear to be filled up with a lot of James Wong’s favorite old-school Victorian houseplants, which are now thought to be incredibly difficult to grow, thanks to the widespread adoption of central heating.
As so many of these cool-climate species look remarkably exotic, people tend to assume that plants decline soon after they bring them home due to their own failure to treat them with the steamy jungle conditions they are convinced plants must require.
Wong believes that knowing that reality is normally the polar opposite is comforting. With the current energy crisis causing a lot of people to consider reducing the number of rooms they heat as well as the temperature in every home generally being actually reduced to a decidedly colder level, a few species could begin to come into their own, as per The Guardian.
Plants rely on light to produce food, start the growing cycle, and ensure healthy development.Photosynthesis (光合作用) would just not occur with the deprivation of the absorption energy from sunlight, and there would be insufficient oxygen to support life.
Wong holds that while these light-loving species will handle a wide range of temperatures, the combination of warm temperatures driving up their metabolic rate (新陈代谢率) coupled with the lack of light (meaning they don’t have the solar energy to support this desire for growth) is kind of like making an emergency stop and speeding up at the same time on their biology.Any driver wouldn’t go through such a conflict in their driving experience.
That’s why light-emitting diode (LED) lights, which can send out different wavelengths of light like the form of red and blue light used by plants for flowering, are frequently adopted to promote plant growth. They are not only effective at stimulating plant growth, but are also very energy-efficient.Basically, unlike most light bulbs, LEDs require very little power to generate light.
4.What is people’s common assumption about exotic plants?( )
A.They are highly sensitive to light.
B.They are hard to survive outdoors.
C.They can’t adapt to changeable weather.
D.They need a hot and wet growing environment.
5.What can be inferred about the Victorian houseplants from paragraph 3?( )
A.Victorian houseplants are becoming more popular in stores.
B.Some Victorian houseplants grow better in cooler environments.
C.Reducing home heating has harmed the majority of houseplants.
D.The energy crisis has caused these plants to require more artificial heating.
6.What does Wong probably want to stress by mentioning car driving?( )
A.Inefficiency of photosynthesis’ function. B.Central heating’s negative effect on plants.
C.Seriousness of plants’ metabolic disorders. D.Houseplants’ adaptation to various temperatures.
7.What are LED lights used to do for houseplants?( )
A.Extend their growing cycles. B.Monitor their metabolic rates.
C.Meet their additional energy demand. D.Offer appropriate room temperatures.

D项中的a hot and wet growing environment与文中the steamy jungle conditions意思相近。
Wong holds ...on their biology.
