When 15-year-old Priya Joshi visited her grandparents'poor Indian village, she was
shocked to see students struggling to study under dim kerosene lamps(煤油灯),which created
dangerous indoor air pollution and provided only.1%of modern LED's brightness."The smoke
hurt their eyes and the unstable light caused headaches,"recalls Priya, now an engineering
student at MIT.This troubling observation inspired her to create a solution.
Considering all kinds of specific problems in the local area,Priya spent months exploring
the best way to deliver lighting solutions to students.Priya began experimenting with solar-
powered study lamps. Her breakthrough came when she repurposed old school notebooks by
embedding flexible solar panels into their covers. This dual-function design increased light
output by 15 times compared to kerosene lamps while reducing carbon emissions by 2 kg per
unit annually."It charges in sunlight during the day and provides reading light at night, she
explains.
Her project's true creativity lay in its sustainable distribution model.Priya partnered with
local women's cooperatives to manufacture the notebooks, creating valuable employment
opportunities.Meanwhile, students could earn notebooks by collecting recyclable materials
from their communities. The results were transformative."We've seen a 30%improvement in
school attendance since students could study after sunset,"reports teacher Anika Patel.
From its beginnings as a simple science project,Priya's invention now brightens the lives
of over 10,000 families across 42 villages. An unexpected benefit emerged when village elders
began using the notebooks to record traditional folk tales and recipes that had previously only
been passed down orally, helping preserve valuable cultural heritage.
Recently,Priya has adapted her design in collaboration with UNICEF to help refugee(
children.Field tests in three refugee camps showed the modified version reduced study
interruptions by 65%0 compared to previous lighting solutions."The same technology that
assists rural students is now supporting those displaced by conflict, she notes.
24.What directly inspired Priya's invention?
A.The health and study challenges she observed.

The development of society has enriched children's experience. But in this age of the
Internet, video games and artificial intelligence, attracting children to the theater has become
challenging for playwrights and theater artists around the world.Youngsters need to watch
plays to learn from literature and the other arts the values of life, society and culture.
For the past decade, the China National Theatre for Children(CNTC)has been producing
educational plays. For example,Three Monks, originally a physical drama based on an ancient
Chinese legend, has surprised audiences since its debut in 2014,thanks to its vivid and
innovative theme. The most valuable aspect of the play is that it makes young audiences
interested in Chinese culture.
In 2023,A Cat's Legend in the Forbidden City, adapted from a children's book and co-
produced by the Palace Museum, debuted in the CNTC.The play tells a heartwarming story of
friendship and companionship, life and permanence through the perspective of a cat, with the
aim of promoting the Palace Museum among young audiences.
The Palace Museum is a precious cultural heritage of humankind. How can we enable
children to understand its essence and significance? At least we can use a play to make people
who have not been to the Palace Museum yearn to do so,and enable people who have visited it
to re-imagine its charm and cultural value.Though a play whose target audience is children may
convey only a limited meaning,it can open a window through which they can find infinite
spiritual treasures.A Cat's Legend in the Forbidden City brings to life China's profound
culture for children.
In the AI era, youngsters,as well as adults, need to know why we are humans.A person
should know "who she or he is"to find the meaning and value of life.As such,it is the
responsibility of contemporary authors, playwrights, short story writers, and artists including
performing artists,to spark children s curiosity about their origin through their works,so they
can understand them in the cultural sense.Since youngsters are the future of humankind, they
need to carry on the human spirit.
28.Which of the following may account for the success of Three Monks?
A.Its use of modern stage techniques.
B.The popularity of a physical drama.
C.Audience's preference for ancient stories.
D.Its novel reflection of the Chinese legend.

A.Stop.
B.Long.
C.Decline.
D.Pretend.
30.What is the significance of plays for kids in AI times?
A.Replacing digital devices.
B.Boosting academic grades.
C.Cutting down on screen hours.
D.Helping explore human roots.
31.What message does the author want to convey in the passage?
A.The CNTC has put on a series of entertaining plays.
B.Plays help youngsters carry forward the human spirit.
C.AI contributes to the rising interest in Chinese culture.
D.Artists are responsible for sparking children's curiosity.

One day in 1996,someone ate a McDonald's McChicken burger in Amsterdam.Perhaps a
quick bite after work?A family outing? These details are lost to time, but others are hard to
erase completely. The meal left a permanent mark on the local environment when a Eurasian
coot()found the discarded McChicken wrapper and decided to use it to line its nest,
where it remained.
"It really shows that it's not just us humans who are writing history, but also these birds
are taking notes and documenting our throwaway society,"said the nest biologist Auke-Florian
Hiemstra, who has been researching the influence of the Anthropocene era on birds'nests in
Amsterdam's canals. When investigating nests in the canals,he found a variety of old
packaging discarded from the early 1990s up to last year.
敬
The Eurasian coot only started migrating to Amsterdam in the late 1980s,and Hiemstra's
findings of packaging from 1994 could show the entire lifespan and heritage of the species in the
area.
While a bird's nest is usually made from twigs(and moss, the abundance of plastics
has been helpful for birds in the city where natural items are in short supply.Hiemstra said
there would likely be a return of natural nests if people focused on re-greening cities and
bringing natural water vegetation back, but in the meantime, the birds were successfully
working with what they had.
"For the coots, our litter is not a waste product but something very valuable.Finding
these materials that were littered 30 years ago,yet they look as fresh as they were just littered
yesterday, really gave me the chills.I really hope we can learn something from the birds to re-
evaluate how we think about our materials. These plastics are a wonderful material, yet we use
them for single use and throw them away,Hiemstra said.
南
32.What does the McChicken wrapper in the coot's nest indicate?
A.The durability of fast-food packaging.
B.Birds'preference for colorful materials.

33.Which of the following best describes the birds in Amsterdam?
A.Pioneering nest builders.
B.Witnesses to urbanization.
C.Victims of plastic pollution
D.Resourceful waste recyclers.
34.What do the coots remind people to do according to Hiemstra?
A.Clear up the canals.
B.Protect bird habitats.
C.Reuse plastics wisely.
D.Expand green space.
35.What is the best title for the text?
A.Plastic Waste:A Hidden Threat to Birds
B.Bird Nests:A Mirror of Throwaway Culture

C.Eurasian Coots:A Creative Architect in Nature
D.Man-made Items:A Silent Driver of Nest Changes

Cindy had always been my most cherished friend. In my eyes, she was an extraordinary
dog full of unique charm, yet my mother labeled her a troublemaker. When I was just eleven
years old,I first laid eyes on that adorably tiny pup with a mass of curly hair, and it was love
at first sight.
Cindy wasn't just cute;she was incredibly smart too.I took great delight in teaching her
all sorts of nifty tricks.Whenever I placed a stick or a small piece of carrot close to her mouth
and uttered the word "chew",she'd dutifully obey. She loved going for walks with my friends
and me.She danced around us as if listening to our conversations about school and clothes and
movies we'd seen.I'd tell her about my friends, the boys I liked, the test I was about to take in
history.Cindy would sit and stare at me as if listening to everything I told her.
Then,out of the blue,my uncle,my mother's younger brother,found himself in a tough
situation and came to stay with us.He and his wife were struggling financially after he lost his
job. They slept in my room and I slept on the couch. My mom didn't want Cindy's curly fur all
over the living room furniture,so she had to sleep in the garage.Instead of being beside my bed
as usual, she was out of my aunt and uncle's way.I resented their presence and kept Cindy
outside with me as much as possible.
But one afternoon, when I went to get her from the backyard, she wasn't there. The back
gate was partly open.I looked everywhere around the neighborhood, knocking on doors and
asking everyone if they'd seen her.I called her name over and over, that name which had
always summoned my faithful friend. But this time, the silence was deafening.
"Sorry,"my uncle said."I guess when I went through the gate to check something in my
car,I forgot to close it completely."I didn't want his apology.I cried and searched.
