In a lively martial arts (武术) club in Akpro-Misserete, Benin (贝宁), the sound of feet hitting the ground and cries of “Hay-Hah!” fill the air. Damien Degbo, 53, teaches his students kung fu and tai chi there. For him, Chinese martial arts are more than just exercise. They’re a way of life and a bridge between Benin and China.
At the age of 13, Degbo watched Chinese martial arts movies in Benin’s capital. He loved how these actors fought with beauty and power. That’s when his love of kung fu began. He learnt how to practice calligraphy, tea preparation and traditional Chinese medicine.
Now, Degbo’s club has more than 350 students. He teaches not only Chinese martial arts but also Chinese culture. Chefif Deen, a student of the kung fu master, says kung fu has changed his life, helping him become stronger and more self-controlled.

Reading a good book is a wonderful journey because the reader can live in someone else’s world for a while. Reading together with others, known as buddy reading, will make this journey even more fantastic. During the journey, the buddies spend time doing a lot of reading activities. This not only adds to the pleasure of reading, but also deepens their understanding of the books.
Although it is all right to have students join in buddy reading with same-aged schoolmates, schools usually pair up older students with younger ones. In 2023, Green School started such a programme and has achieved a great success.
Both younger and older readers in this school have learned a lot from this two-year programme. For example, when they listened to each other, they learned to be kind and patient. This experience also provided them with a chance to practise lifelong skills, such as exercising leadership or communicating with others. A student called Jason said that reading to a younger buddy was really helpful. He became more confident, as he knew he was a role model for someone.
The school also became a closer community. The reading buddies felt more connected as they often met each other. The students were always excited when they saw their buddies pass by in the hallway.
Now summer vacation is coming. It’s a great time to get into books. Why not pair up with a friend, choose a book you both like and read it together?
28.What does buddy reading mean?
A.Reading while travelling. B.Reading in the library.
C.Reading with others. D.Reading in free time.
29.How did Green school pair up buddies?
A.With classmates of the same age. B.Based on the same interest.
C.With schoolmates of different ages. D.Based on the location.
30.What can the students learn from the two-year programme?
A.How to achieve success. B.How to be confident and patient.
C.How to start a programme. D.How to make friends with others.
31.What’s the purpose of the last paragraph?
A.To call on us to read.
B.To teach us to be good readers.
C.To tell us how to spend a holiday.
D.To show the advantages of reading.
【答案】28.C 29.C 30.B 31.A

①Imagine watching a movie in a foreign language or attending a lecture where the speaker talks fast, the subtitles (字幕) appear directly on your glasses. Isn’t that amazing?
②Recently, a magical pair of glasses—the AR Smart Glasses—has hit the market, which goes far beyond common translation tools by offering hands-free, screen-free, and real-time interactive (实时互动) translation.
③The AR Smart Glasses are lightweight and comfortable to wear. They look just like common glasses, but the “magic” hidden within them can’t be ignored (忽视).
④The coolest feature of the AR Smart Glasses is their special translator. When people talk with someone, they can just point the glasses’ camera at the person they’re talking to, and the translation appears on the screen. When people visit a new city wearing AR Smart Glasses, they can simply look at any text, and a translation quickly appears in their view. If they get lost and need directions, the glasses can connect with GPS apps and show them translated directions right in front of their eyes. Even for language learners, it would be wonderful to practice a new language by seeing the words they hear being translated simultaneously. Learning a language can become quicker, easier, and more certain.
⑤Since translation tools like the AR Smart Glasses help people understand words easily, some people start to doubt whether it’s still necessary to learn English, or, any other foreign languages. In fact, knowing a new language is more than just that. When you speak a language fluently, you understand the way people talk, the jokes they make, and the special meanings behind their words. Friends are important in our lives. But not all of friends stand the test of time. We spoke about friendships with Marisa Franco, writer of the book How Can You Make And Keep Friends.
36
Accept changes in life
37 Things just keep coming and going. Franco said: “Nobody really wants the friendship to end, but people get busy and can’t keep the friendship any more.” It doesn’t mean we are not qualified (合格的) friends. Instead, it makes us value what we have at present.
38
“When being with friends, the relationship will get worse if you keep leaving something unsaid instead of communicating with each other positively (积极地).” Franco said. We might be afraid of having arguments. But if we think about it and talk in peace, it can be a sign that you care enough to fix the friendship.
Allow yourself to feel sad
Normally, when a friendship ends, there is a process of feeling sad. Allow yourself to feel those emotions and be patient with yourself. The way society views friendships may make your sadness last longer. When a friendship ends, you are questioned, “Sorry for your loss, but why are you still in a bad mood?” Then you think “Is it wrong to feel sad?” 39 Of course, you are upset, which means you love your friend deeply. “And you can’t put a timeline on your sadness. Sadness is just a process of feeling emotion over time.” Franco said.
Be kind to yourself along the way
It’s important to forgive (原谅) yourself for not getting over the loss of a friendship. 40 But don’t go into a new friendship feeling afraid. “Your understanding of friendship in your brain isn’t just colored by this one experience.” Franco said.
A.Make the unsaid said.
B.Losing friends is a part of life.
C.Solve problems as quickly as possible.
D.One way to make you feel better again is to make new friends.
E.Come on, you lost someone you are close to.
F.Here are four tips to remember if you’re losing a friend.

Degbo joined a private kung fu club and later learnt Chinese at a culture centre. In 2010, he started his own club, Super Shaolin of Benin. In 2014, he got a chance to train at China’s Shaolin Temple. The training was hard, but it taught him a lot about Chinese culture.

This helps you connect with people better and make real friends. Also, being able to speak more than one language makes you smarter. It helps you think in new ways and solve problems more easily. In a word, learning a language isn’t just about understanding words. More importantly, it’s about real connections with native speakers and a different point of view to see the world.
