Judy was about to turn 7 years old when her mom suggested a new way to celebrate her birthday. “What would you think about donating your gifts to a children’s hospital?” her mom said.
At first, Judy wasn’t sure. Then she gave it some thought. “It can be a good idea.” Judy told TIME for Kids. “I already had everything I needed, and these kids that were going through things at the hospital— they needed it more than I did.”
Now a freshman in high school, Judy continues to bring joy to kids and teens being treated for serious illnesses. In December 2023, it was her 9th year to donate her birthday gifts to the children’s hospital in San Antonio, Texas.
“Just to see their little faces when she hands them the gifts, that’s always been our favorite part,” says Judy’s mom, Sondra Perez. “Seeing the kids’ reactions just touches our heart.”
Kids, 10 and older are more often hospitalized for mental health problems. Whatever the patient’s age, a hospital stay can be stressful. Judy’s effort is a bright light during a difficult time.
Along with an invitation to Judy’s party, her friends get a list of gift ideas for kids at the hospital. For the littlest patients, gifts might include building blocks or toy trains. “And for the teenagers, my age or older,” Judy says, “it might be nail polish or books.”
After the first round of donations, Judy shares the list with family, coaches, and teammates. The number of donations “grows every year,” she says, but she doesn’t keep an exact count. Instead, she judges by sight. “We measure how much of the carpet it covers in our living room,” Judy says. “Last year, it covered the whole carpet (地毯).”
Then it’s time to share the gifts with kids at the hospital. “Seeing other people’s happiness—— that’s all that matters to me,” Judy says.
Natalie Gutierrez works in the public relations office at the children’s hospital. She has seen firsthand the influence of Judy’s gift-giving. “She puts smiles on the faces of these little patients in our hospital and on our nurses and doctors.” Gutierrez says. “They are all amazed at how generous she was at such a young age.”
Judy’s efforts to help kids in the hospital have encouraged others to follow in her footsteps. Friends have collected and donated gifts for their birthdays too. And Judy says her 11-year-old twin sister helps animals by donating to the Humane Society.
“Giving to others, it’s just a good feeling to have at the end of the day,” Judy says. “I want to keep doing this as long as I can.”

1.D 2.B 3.C 4.A 5.B 6.C 7.B 8.B 9.D 10.B
26 years old 26岁;26-year old表达错误;26-year-old 26岁的;26-years old 表达错误。
根据“he…as Student of the Year in high school!”,结合选项可知,此处应该表达他在高中被选为年度最佳学生,所以此处时态应该为一般过去时,且主语he与choose之间是被动关系。故选A。
If 如果;When 当……
the other其他的,特指;another另一;再一;others其他的,泛指;other其他的,泛指。根据分析句子“Some served the guests, some kept the place clean, and…did the cooking.”
happy幸福的,形容词;happily幸福地,副词;more happily更幸福;the most happily 最幸福。根据分析句子“Many customers have meals…at Tim’s Place.”,结合选项可知,此处应该填入happily,副词,修饰动词have,指的是愉快地用餐。故选B。

Cave paintings are the oldest pictures. Some of them are almost 30,000 years old. Many of these paintings show animals or hunting scenes They do not have written words on them. But when we look at them, we get an idea of the feelings the people had when drawing them. The paintings tell stories of hopes and fears. 36
Sometime between 4,000 and 3,000 BC, the skill of writing was developed in Egypt and Mesopotamia. People cut texts on stones first. 37 But it was impossible to carry stones from place to place. The invention of papyrus (莎草纸) allowed documents to be moved easily. More than 3,000 years ago, the ancient Chinese people cut words on bones and shells. These words are called jiaguwen. It is the writing system that has developed over thousands of years into today’s hanzi.
People made the first books from papyrus and from thin animal skins. Around 105 AD, paper-making skill was improved after the invention of paper in China. 38 It was published on May 11, 868 AD.In the middle of the 15th century, the printing machine was invented in Germany. Since that time, a huge number of books have been printed worldwide. 39
Books will be around for many years, of course. But some people prefer reading electronic books. 40 Now you can buy your books whenever you want without having to leave the comfort of your home.

36.根据上文“They do not have written words on them. But when we look at them, we get an idea of the feelings the people had when drawing them. The paintings tell stories of hopes and fears.”
37.根据上文“People cut texts on stones first.”
38.根据上文“Around 105 AD, paper-making skill was improved after the invention of paper in China.”和下文“It was published on May 11, 868 AD.”

Since that time, a huge number of books have been printed worldwide.”和下文“Books will be around for many years, of course.”
40.根据上文“But some people prefer reading electronic books.” 故选A。

21.How many times has she donated her gifts to the children’s hospital before 2024?
A.7. B.8. C.9. D.10.
22.Why does the author use “a bright light” to describe Judy’s effort in Paragraph 5?
A.Because she manages to cure these kids’ illness by herself.
B.Because she donates money to them to help them get better treatment.
C.Because she helps the doctors and nurses a lot with their work.
D.Because she brings these kids happiness during their difficult time.
23.What does the underlined “They” include in Paragraph 9?
①Natalie Gutierrez ②doctors ③Judy’s twin sister ④little patients ⑤nurses
A.①②④ B.③④⑤ C.②④⑤ D.①③⑤
24.What can we know from this passage?
A.Judy was unhappy when her mom suggested her to donate her gifts.
B.Judy donates the same gifts to kids in the hospital every year.
C.Judy’s twin sister also helps children in hospital because of Judy.
D.More and more people choose to donate gifts like Judy.
25.Which could be the best title for the passage?
A.Celebrate Often, Think Often B.Need Much, See Much

We use our hands to communicate in many ways. The thumbs (拇指) up sign means approval (赞成). People cross their fingers to wish for luck. Many people make an O with their thumb and the second finger to show that everything is OK.
Police officers wave (挥手) traffic on or hold their hands up to direct drivers to stop. In classrooms, children often raise their hands to speak in class.
