Cornell University raised the 3 P’s for effective (有效的) reading. The 3 P’s—purpose (目标), preview (预览), plan—allow students to get into their reading and learn more actively.
Purpose - “Why am I reading this?”
Think about the reason you’re reading. Is it for fun, to learn something new, or to find an answer?
Example: “I’m reading this story to find out how the hero solves the problem he meets.”
Why it helps: Knowing your purpose keeps you focused and makes reading more meaningful.
Preview - “Let’s take a quick look !”
Before reading, look at the title, pictures, and headings. Look through the pages to see what’s coming.
Example: “I see a picture of a dragon — maybe this is an adventure (冒险)”!.
Why it helps: Previewing builds your interest and gives hints (线索) about what you will read.
Plan - “How will I read this?”
Decide how you’ll read—slowly to understand new words, or quickly to get the main idea.
Example: “I’ll read one chapter at a time and write down new words.”
Why it helps: Planning helps you keep on tasks and remember more of what you read.
45.What do we use 3 P’s for?

C.Effective writing. D.Effective talking.
46.What does “previewing” help you do?

Plant Phototropism (向光性): The Hidden Power of Growth
①Have you ever noticed that house plants always lean (倾斜) toward the window? This is called phototropism, a special ability of plants to grow toward light. It is not a random movement but a well-planned biological response that helps plants grow.
②For a long time, people wondered how plants “feel” light. Early scientists thought the plant’s tip (末梢) might play a key role. In the 19th century, a lot of experiments began to uncover the secret behind it.
③Charles Darwin and his son did a famous experiment with grass seedlings (幼苗). They covered the root of some seedlings and left others uncovered. Only the seedlings with uncovered root bent (弯曲) toward the light, showing that the root is important for finding light.
④Later, other scientists found that the root produces a chemical called auxin (生长素). Auxin helps cells grow, but it moves away from light. When light shines on one side of the root, auxin builds up on the dark side of the stem.
⑤With more auxin on the dark side, cells there grow longer and faster than those on the light side. This unbalanced growth makes the stem bend slowly toward the light over time.
⑥Phototropism is important for plants. As plants, they need light to make food through photosynthesis Growing toward light makes sure that they get enough energy to grow, flower, and produce seeds.
⑦Today, this knowledge is used in farming. Farmers adjust (调整) light positions in greenhouses to control plant growth, helping crops grow stronger and produce more of what we want.
48.Where can I put the sentence “This discovery laid the foundation (基础) for further research on plant hormones (激素)”?
A.Between Paragraph 2 and Paragraph 3. B.Between Paragraph 3 and Paragraph 4.
C.Between Paragraph 4 and Paragraph 5. D.Between Paragraph 5 and Paragraph 6.
49.What is the usage of auxin in phototropism?
A.It helps plants find light directly. B.It makes cells on the dark side grow faster.
C.It stops cells on the light side from growing. D.It moves toward light to promote growth.
50.We can infer from the passage that ______.
A.plants without root can still grow toward light
B.auxin is produced in every part of the plant
C.phototropism helps plants adapt to their environment
D.Darwin was the first to discover auxin
51.If Lily wants a plant to grow straight up and well, which way is effective according to the passage?
A.Put the plant in a dark room all the time.
B.Turn the flower pot regularly to keep light balanced.
C.Cover the root of the plant with a dark cloth.
D.Provide light only from the bottom of the pot.

It was a summer, but what a summer.
I once had my own vegetable garden. It was my first and also my last because I couldn’t go to the countryside often enough to keep my eyes on it. Anyway, the second summer, the bugs (虫) found us and ate some of the vegetables. I could see the garden needed more care than I could give it, and I stopped.
But the first season was so pleasant. I still remember sitting in that garden— fresh air on my face, quiet all around me. Sometimes I would sing, softly at first, then a little louder. Soon a small group of cows walked over and put their big heads over the fence (栅栏), looking at me gently. Mostly I sat there, picking green beans, boiling them, adding a little butter and salt, and eating them just like that. They were so delicious that I felt like singing again, right there in the quiet garden.
Once I thought life was too short for all my dreams. There were so many choices, and it made me sad that things had to end or I had to choose between them. How could I both live on a farm and travel the world? It seemed that enjoying life fully only meant loss (失落).
▲ These memories are a permanent (永恒的) part of me. I often think back to that wonderful summer and my lovely garden. Little by little, the truth became okay with me: someone who loves many things can’t make all of them permanent. You have to walk away from one thing so you can have another. So, it’s common for us to feel a little lost sometimes.
Then I understood that summer with my fresh vegetables, the hours I spent sitting on the ground, and the unexpected love from the cows—all these filled an empty place in my heart.
And it has never been empty since.
52.What made the author stop planting the vegetable garden?
A.She didn’t have enough time or energy for it. B.The garden was too far away for her to visit.
C.The plants were eaten by insects. D.She was not interested in it.
53.Which of the following is NOT a simple pleasure for the author in her garden time?
A.Enjoying the quiet and fresh air. B.Eating freshly cooked vegetables.
C.Selling vegetables for money. D.Having unexpected animal visitors.
54.Which of the following may be the best to put in “ ▲ ” in Paragraph 5?
A.However, I soon forgot the garden. B.However, nothing was lost.
C.Besides, I felt upset about the dead plants. D.Besides, those days were a waste of time.
55.According to the author, what did the experience of that summer finally bring to her life?
A.The sad feeling of not keeping the garden.
B.The skills to grow vegetables successfully.
C.More free time to enjoy being close to nature later.
D.Permanent memories that filled an empty space inside.

Teen mental health has become one of the hottest social topics in 2026. Today, teenagers are facing more stress than before. Heavy study pressure from endless exams and homework makes more and more teenagers feel anxious, stressed and lonely. Some even lose interest in their favorite things and stay in bad moods for a long time. Luckily, teachers, parents and the whole society are working together to help teenagers keep a healthy mind and live a happy life.
Nowadays, nearly every middle school has professional mental health teachers. They are patient and well-trained to listen to students’ problems. Students can safely talk about their worries, exam stress, friendship or family problems with these teachers in a safe and private environment and get useful, warm advice in private. This safe way lets them speak out their feelings freely, so they don’t have to face difficulties alone. These teachers may advise them to join in some meaningful activities to relax, such as stress-relief games and small psychological lectures. Through these activities, students can learn to know their feelings better.
What can teenagers themselves do? First, it’s important to keep a healthy daily routine—sleep at least 8 hours each night and exercise for 30 minutes every day. Good rest and daily exercise build strong bodies and clear minds, which help us fight against bad feelings. Second, talk to parents or close friends when feeling upset. Don’t keep bad feelings to yourself. Sharing true feelings can take away much pressure and make your heart much lighter.
A new survey in 2026 shows that about 78% of teens feel more positive after trying these ways. Asking for help is not a shame, but a brave and wise choice for every teenager. Mental health is as important as physical health. With care from families, schools and society, as well as our own good habits, teens can stay away from negative moods and grow up happily and healthily.
65.Are teenagers today facing more stress than before?
66.What percent of teens feel more positive after trying these ways according to a survey in 2026?
67.According to the passage, what ways can teenagers find to deal with their mental health problems?
68.What other ways can you think of to help solve mental health problems? (At least 30 words.)

Host: Welcome to “Youth Insight Debate”! Today’s hot topic: “Should young people prioritize ‘adding’ or ‘subtracting’ to achieve true happiness?”
Pro Debater: Thank you, host. We firmly believe that young people should hug “adding” to find happiness. Youth is a time of growth and exploration—every new skill learned, every new friend made, every new experience gained adds color to our lives. When we learn a language, join a volunteer team, or try a new sport, we don’t just collect achievements; we build confidence, expand our horizons, and discover our potential. Happiness comes from the richness of life, not the emptiness of limitation. “Subtracting” sounds easy, but it risks narrowing our world, making us miss out on the opportunities that shape our future.
Con Debater: With all respect, pro side, your view is a trap of overcommitment We argue that young people must practice “subtracting” to unlock happiness. In an age of endless notifications and endless to-do lists, we’re drowning in choices—too many social media accounts, too many trivial commitments, too many “shoulds” that drain our energy. “Subtracting” isn’t about giving up; it’s about intentionality When we cut down on mindless scrolling, say no to toxic friendships, and focus on what truly matters—our passions, our health, our loved ones—we free ourselves from stress and find peace. Happiness isn’t about having more; it’s about needing less.
Pro Debater: “Subtracting” as the con side describes it is just a fancy word for fear. Young people need to take risks, not retreat. When we “add” meaningful experiences—like pursuing a degree, starting a side hustle, or traveling—we’re not overcommitting; we’re investing (投资) in ourselves. The stress they mention comes from not choosing the right things to add, not from adding itself. If we only subtract, we’ll never know what we’re capable of.
Con Debater: Investment without strategy (策略) is waste. The pro side confuses (混淆) “adding” with “mindlessly accumulating.” Every “yes” to a new task is a “no” to something else. When we subtract the noise, we make space for the things that truly bring joy—deep relationships, focused work, quiet moments. Happiness isn’t a checklist; it’s a state of mind that comes from clarity, not clutter.
Host: Final statements, please.
Pro Debater: To young people: don’t shrink from “adding.” Every step you take to grow, to connect, to create is a step toward a happier, more fulfilled life. The world is full of possibilities—don’t let the fear of “too much” stop you from saying “yes” to life.
Con Debater: To young people: don’t be fooled by the myth of “more.” True happiness comes from simplifying, from focusing on what matters, from letting go of what doesn’t. The less you carry, the freer you are—and the more room you have to love, to grow, to be happy.
Host: Thank you both for this passionate debate.
This is a passionate debate on whether young people should “add” or “subtract” to find happiness. The pro side firmly believes young people should 74 to enrich their lives, while the con side argues that “subtracting” 75 . The debate shows that 76 , as for young people, happiness ultimately lies in 77 .

An Experience That Made Me Feel Upset
Last month, I had an experience that made me feel really upset. I argued with my best friend, Tom, over a small thing.
It started when Tom borrowed my favorite book. When he returned it, I found some pages were dirty. I got angry and said some hurtful words to him. After that, he stopped talking to me. I felt very upset and lonely. I missed our friendship, but I was too proud to say sorry first. My mother noticed I was unhappy and asked what was wrong. I told her everything. She advised me to apologize to Tom because true friendship is more important than a book. This experience taught me an important lesson: we should think before we speak and learn to forgive. Now our friendship is stronger than before.

Last Saturday, our school basketball team played against the team from another school. It was an important game, and we all wanted to win. Before the game, our 35 Mr. Smith told us to pull together and do our best.
The game started well. We played hard and the 36 was really close. But then, something terrible happened. One of our players, Mike, pushed a player from the other team. The 37 saw it and gave the other team two free throws.
Mike felt really bad. He knew he had let the whole team 38 . “I’m so sorry,” he said quietly. He didn’t 39 to look at anyone. We could see that he was in low spirits.
After the game, we lost by just two points. Everyone was sad, but nobody was 40 on Mike. “Don’t worry,” I said. “We all make mistakes. The important thing is to learn from them.”
“You’re right,” said Mike. “I won’t 41 this mistake next time. I promise!”
Our coach came over and said, “I’m 42 of you all. You played well and worked together as a team. We didn’t win this time, but we will next time.”
Mike felt a 43 better after hearing these words. “Thanks, everyone. Your support means a lot to me,” he said with a smile.

后文出现“Our coach came over...”,且赛前指导队员的身份是教练,应用coach“教练”。
后文提到“we lost by just two points”,说明比赛过程中比分胶着,应用score“比分”。
let sb. up“让某人起来”、let sb. out“让某人出去”、let sb. off“放过某人”均不符合文意。
固定搭配be hard on sb.
前文提到“The important thing is to learn from them”,说明Mike决心避免再犯同样的错,应用repeat“重复”。
固定搭配be proud of sb.
固定搭配a solution to a problem意为“问题的解决办法”,solution与problem搭配最准确,符合“团队协作解决困难”的主旨。
A
Cornell University raised the 3 P’s for effective (有效的) reading.
A.Effective listening. B.Effective reading.
C.Effective writing. D.Effective talking.
46.What does “previewing” help you do?
A.Focus on the reading task. B.Understand new words.
C.Build interest and get hints. D.Read more quickly.
47.Which of the following example is “planning”?
A.“I’ll read this chapter and write down the words that I don’t know.”
B.“I’m reading this science article to learn how bees help plants grow.”
C.“I see the picture of colorful fish—this book is probably about ocean life.”
D.“I’m reading the traveling guide book to decide where to go on my next vacation.”
【答案】45.B 46.C 47.A
45.原文第一句明确指出“Cornell University raised the 3 P’s for effective reading”,直接说明3P方法是用于有效阅读的,因此对应选项B。
46.在Preview板块的“Why it helps”部分,原文提到“Previewing builds your interest and gives hints about what you will read”,与选项C“Build interest and get hints”完全对应。
47.Plan板块的示例为“I’ll read one chapter at a time and write down new words”,选项A“I’ll read this chapter and write down the words that I don’t know”与该示例结构和内容一致,属于规划阅读方式的表达;而选项B、D属于Purpose(目标),选项C属于Preview(预览),因此答案为A。

第三段介绍达尔文父子的实验,得出结论:“Only the seedlings with uncovered root bent toward the light, showing that the root is important for finding light”,表明根尖对感知光照十分重要,完成了早期实验发现;第四段开始介绍后续科学家的进一步研究,发现了生长素。
49.第五段指出:“With more auxin on the dark side, cells there grow longer and faster than those on the light side.”,说明生长素在向光性中的作用是使植物暗侧细胞生长更快。
50.第六段提到:“Growing toward light makes sure that they get enough energy to grow, flower, and produce seeds.”,可推知向光性能够帮助植物获得生存繁衍所需的能量,帮助植物适应环境。
51.第四段和第五段:“When light shines on one side of the root...This unbalanced growth makes the stem bend slowly toward the light over time.”
C
52.第二段指出“It was my first and also my last because I couldn’t go to the countryside often enough to keep my eyes on it”,这直接说明作者没有足够的时间和精力去照料菜园,所以停止种植。
53.第三段中指出“fresh air on my face, quiet all around me”体现享受安静和新鲜空气;“eating them just like that. They were so delicious”表明吃新鲜烹饪的蔬菜;“Soon a small group of cows walked over and put their big heads over the fence (栅栏), looking at me gently”说明有意外出现的动物访客,而文中未提及卖蔬菜赚钱。
所以“However, nothing was lost.”
55.最后一段指出“Then I understood that summer with my fresh vegetables, the hours I spent sitting on the ground, and the unexpected love from the cows—all these filled an empty place in my heart. And it has never been empty since.”

65.Yes, they are. 66.About 78%. 67.They can ask professional mental health teachers for help, take part in meaningful activities, keep a healthy daily routine, and talk to parents or close friends. 68.I think teenagers can also try some relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing, meditation, or yoga. Besides, developing some hobbies like reading, painting, or playing music can also be helpful. Moreover, keeping active in social activities is also important for mental health.
65.首段明确提到“Today, teenagers are facing more stress than before”,这是原文直接陈述的信息,因此直接给出肯定回答。
66.第四段开头指出“A new survey in 2026 shows that about 78% of teens feel more positive after trying these ways”,该题是对原文具体数据的直接提取。
67.根据第二段中“nearly every middle school has professional mental health teachers. Students can safely talk about their worries... with these teachers”、“join in some meaningful activities to relax”、第三段中“keep a healthy daily routine”和“talk to parents or close friends when feeling upset”可知,青少年可以通过向专业心理教师求助、参加有意义的活动、保持健康的日常生活习惯以及与父母或亲密朋友交谈来解决心理健康问题。

74.actively take “adding” 75.unlocks true happiness 76.two sides hold different views 77.your own suitable choice
