Dear Dr Wisdom,
I am a mother of three children and we live with my husband’s parents. One of my children has a bad habit of hitting and throwing things away. But when I try to stop him, his grandparents always stand by his side. At last, it becomes very clear to him that Mum’s words do not matter! In fact, he’s so clever that he even “blackmails” me sometimes. When I say no to a thing, he says he will tell it to his grandparents! This is crazy! What should I do?
Susan
Dear Susan,
Grandparents always seem to care too much about their grandchildren. You should have a sit-down talk with them. Let them understand that they are making your child lose respect for you. Although they may disagree with you, they should talk to you in a private (私下的) way, not in front of your child. If you tell your child to do something, they should say, “Do as your mother says.” And the same is right for you. One more thing, hitting and throwing are never good, no matter what the reason is. Your child should also learn to take control of his actions.

Many people worry too much about things that might happen or think back again and again about what they did before. This is what we call “overthinking (精神内耗)”. In fact, the longer you think about something, the more tired and stressed you may be. But can we do something to stop overthinking?
Ethan, a 35-year-old salesman, often found himself staying awake at night, replaying a talk with his boss in his mind. “Am I right? Is there anything wrong with the talk?” The more he thought about it, the worse he felt. One night in bed, he noticed that his body was under great stress and it was hard for him to breathe. He decided to get out of bed and started doing simple exercise. After a few minutes, he felt less nervous. Then he kept his mind on his body, and stopped worrying too much about his mistakes. As he exercised more, he felt greatly relaxed.
Next time you start worrying too much or getting nervous, try to put your mind on your body instead. You may go for a walk or do push-ups until you are sweating (出汗). Holding something cold or warm can also help you feel better quickly. “4-7-8 breathing” is another useful method. That is to spend four seconds taking a deep breath, hold it for seven seconds and then breathe out for eight seconds. Soon, you'll find your mind is peaceful again.

①If you’re in a bad mood, you might lie in bed, hide at home, or do nothing. In less than a day, your body will certainly have problems, and your mental state will also be problematic. Here are some suggestions to help you guide moods.
②Practise breathing. Taking a deep breath for yourself actually allows your emotions to calm down and become much more relaxed.
③Gently touch your own Danzhong acupoint (膻中穴). Touching it makes you feel much better. If you don’t want to touch it, you can clap. Applauding (鼓掌) can make us happy. The palm (手掌) has a rich array of tactile neurons (触觉神经元), which makes you feel very happy when you touch them. So applauding is not given to others—it’s for yourself.
④Make sure to exercise. A ten-minute workout will produce positive effects, and a thirty-minute workout will produce beautiful results. Why? The movement brings changes in neural circuits (神经回路), producing an important brain nutrient factor called brain-derived neurotrophic factor, BDNF (脑源性神经营养因子), which is the “fertilizer (肥料)” of the brain.
⑤When you encounter something uncomfortable, find something to do. What you do isn’t important. Just do it. Taking a shower, changing clothes, mopping the floor, singing and dancing, and even shouting can all help with your mood.

What do you do when you’re angry? Some people vent (发泄) their anger. They may shout or hit something to get their anger out. New research said that it doesn’t actually help. In fact, it might make things worse.
Sophie Kjaervik and Brad Bushman led the research. They looked at 154 studies including more than 10,000 people from more than 20 countries. The experts said the results were the same for people of all ages wherever they came from. “Angry people want to hit, kick or scream (尖叫),” said Bushman. “But that doesn’t work. People say they feel better after, but this feeling just makes them more likely to do it again.” He said venting is the worst thing you can do.
Kjaervik explained how they did their work. They collected research on anger and activities. And then they looked at the influences of different activities on people’s heart rate and anger.
The researchers found that activities like breathing and yoga helped people relax. “We were surprised to find that all activities that calm your body down are helpful in making people less angry,” said Kjaervik. So she gave some advice.
“People should calm their breathing down,” Kjaervik said. “This can be done by simply lying down and breathing slowly and deeply. Imagine your angry thoughts flying away on a cloud, and that should make you less angry.”
Bushman also gave advice on managing anger. He said that eating healthy food, like fruits and vegetables, can help. “To manage your anger, make sure you’ve had something to eat!” said Bushman.

39.What is Bushman’s advice on managing anger?
A.Doing yoga. B.Going for a run.
C.Breathing slowly. D.Eating healthy food.
