M: On Christmas Eve 2022, Yvonne White got a call from Sha’Kyra Aughtry, a stranger who had rescued Yvonne’s brother, Joey White, in the deadly winter storm. Joey is mentally disabled. He had promised Yvonne he would stay put when she called him just before the storm hit. But as the storm hit the city, Joey still went to North Park Theater, a cinema where he has worked as a gatekeeper since 1980. “For someone who’s used to being in a pattern, I think it’s hard to change that pattern,” Joey’s employer Ray Barker recalled. “During the pandemic, when the theater was closed, Joey still showed up for work sometimes.” Joey ended up in a snow bank outside Aughtry’s home, suffering from severe frostbite. Aughtry carried Joey into her home. Joey urgently needed medical attention. However, with the roads covered in ice and snow, getting help seemed impossible. “I called 911 easily 100 times,” Aughtry said. In desperation, Aughtry posted a live video on social media for help. Within half an hour, neighbors offered to help. Several showed up to clear the snow around Aughtry’s home. They wrapped Joey in a warm blanket and carefully transported him to the medical center. “Joey’s rescue is all thanks to Aughtry. This kind woman came out, noticed a human being in trouble and did something about it, which most people in this day and age wouldn’t necessarily do,” Barker said. “She saved his life.”

A millionaire Richard Branson flew into space aboard his own winged rocket ship Sunday, bringing space tourism a step closer to reality and beating out his richer rival Jeff Bezos.
The nearly 71-year-old Branson and five crew members from his Virgin Galactic space tourism company reached an altitude of 86 kilometers over the New Mexico desert — enough to experience up to four minutes of weightlessness and witness the curve of the Earth and then glided back home to a runway landing.
With about 500 people watching, including Branson’s family, the space plane named Unity was carried high in the air underneath a twin-fuselage (机身) aircraft. Then, at an altitude of about 13 kilometers, Unity separated from the mother ship and fired its engine, reaching more than Mach 3, or three times the speed of sound, as it pierced (刺穿) the edge of space.
“The whole thing, it was just magical,” joyful Branson said on his return aboard the space plane. Spectators cheered, jumped into the air and embraced as Unity touched down on Earth. Mike Moses, a top executive at Virgin Galactic, said that apart from some problems with the transmission of video images from inside the cabin, the flight was perfect.
The brief, up-and-down flight — the space plane’s portion took only about 15 minutes — was a eye-catching commercial plug for Virgin Galactic, which plans to start taking paying customers on joyrides next year.

Of all the forces that shape our lives, work is the most dominant. A huge portion of our conscious hours is devoted to our jobs. What we do defines our living standards and, to a considerable extent, our social status. Some argue that the importance of leisure allows us to ignore work’s injustice, and that people should offset (抵消) its frustrations by focusing on other parts of their lives.
I consider this attitude a form of giving up. For the foreseeable future, the material and psychological rewards that work provides will remain vital to life’s satisfaction. However, only a small minority of people can control their pace of work or their working environment. Similarly, work offers only a few people the chance for creativity, imagination, or initiative. The inequality we see in and through work remains one of the cruelest and most obvious inequalities in our society.
And the clearest form of this inequality is the contrast between managers and the rest. For most managers, work is an opportunity and a challenge. Their jobs interest them and allow them to develop their abilities. They keep learning, can exercise responsibility, and have a significant degree of control over their own and others’ working lives. Most importantly, they have the freedom to initiate. In contrast, for most manual workers and a growing number of white-collar workers, work is a boring and even painful experience. They spend their lives in conditions which would be considered intolerable by the managers who allow these conditions to continue.
Ordinary workers have little control over their work. Their jobs provide them with no opportunity for personal development. Often, the design of production makes workers simply a part of the technology. In offices, many jobs are so routine that workers rightly feel themselves to be small, unimportant parts in a large rigid machine. As a direct result, many workers feel disengaged from their jobs and their companies. This sense of alienation remains one of the most serious outcomes of inequality in the modern workplace.
28. Why does work’s dominance pose a problem according to some people?
A. It makes leisure unimportant.
B It hides work’s built-in injustice.
C. It rarely defines our social status.
D. It consumes all our conscious hours.
29. What does the underlined word “alienation” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Disconnection. B. Satisfaction. C. Promotion. D. Exhaustion.
30. Why is work inequality considered cruel?
A. It cannot be offset by leisure activities.
B. It lowers overall social productivity.
C. It lowers everyone’s living standards.
D. It denies most people autonomy and fulfillment.
31. Which would be the best title for the passage?
A. The Power and Problems of Modern Work.
B. Why Leisure Cannot Replace Work Satisfaction.
C. Inequality and Its Effects at Work.
D. Managers Versus Workers: A Workplace Divide.
B 29. A 30. D 31. C
根据第一段“Some argue that the importance of leisure allows us to ignore work’s injustice, and that people should offset its frustrations by focusing on other parts of their lives.(一些人认为,休闲的重要性使我们能够忽视工作中的不公平,人们应该通过关注生活的其他部分来抵消工作中的挫折。)”
根据上文“As a direct result, many workers feel disengaged from their jobs and their companies. (作为一个直接的结果,许多工人感到与他们的工作和公司脱节。)”可知,工人感到与工作和公司脱节,而这种脱节感是现代工作场所中最严重的不平等后果之一。由此可知,“alienation”意为“疏离、脱节”。故选A项。
根据第二段“However, only a small minority of people can control their pace of work or their working environment. Similarly, work offers only a few people the chance for creativity, imagination, or initiative. The inequality we see in and through work remains one of the cruelest and most obvious inequalities in our society.(然而,只有极少数人能够掌控自己的工作节奏或工作环境。
D
In the dark depths of the ocean, sound serves as the essential medium of life. Marine species ranging from giant whales to socially complex seals have evolved to depend entirely on sound signals for navigation, communication, and survival. This delicate underwater soundscape now faces huge disturbance from human activities, with commercial shipping as a primary contributor to marine noise pollution. Scientific research consistently demonstrates that ocean noise levels have been increasing by approximately 3.3 decibels per decade, directly corresponding with the expansion of global maritime traffic.
The most significant sound disturbance originates from propeller cavitation (螺旋桨空化) — a complex process where ship propellers spin so fast that they create tiny bubbles. When these bubbles burst, they generate persistent low-frequency sounds capable of traveling thousands of meters through water. This human-made noise pollution severely disrupts critical marine mammal behaviors including finding mates, feeding patterns, and migratory navigation, with consequences that may extend throughout marine ecosystems.
Addressing this environmental challenge, researchers worldwide are developing new technological solutions. At the University of British Columbia, marine engineers are pioneering flexible propeller blades (桨叶) that significantly reduce bubble formation through controlled blade movement. Simultaneously, researchers at the Dutch institute MARIN have perfected bubble curtain technology — systems that generate streams of air bubbles around propellers and ship bodies to soften bubble collapse and absorb sound waves. Test results demonstrate substantial noise reduction across frequencies particularly important to marine mammals.
Beyond these solutions, emerging technologies include unique materials and innovative “sound black hole” concepts that effectively trap vibrational energy within ship structures. These cutting-edge approaches achieve notable noise reduction while avoiding concerns about additional weight or safety risks.
Despite these promising advances, practical implementation faces substantial challenges. Upgrading existing ships requires significant investment, and shipowners need stronger economic and regulatory support. Encouragingly, international environmental standards are gradually creating favorable conditions for adopting these technologies. As research refines these solutions, the maritime industry moves closer to achieving sustainable coexistence between global commerce and marine ecosystem preservation.
32. What is the main cause of underwater noise pollution?
A. Sound of underwater ocean currents.
B. Noise from marine mammals’ activities.
C. Noise from ship propellers.
D. Low-frequency sound waves.
33. How does bubble curtain technology primarily function to reduce noise?
A. By hardening the ship’s bodies.
B. By slowing down the propeller’s spin.
C. By controlling the water current.
D. By generating sound-absorbing bubbles.
34. What is the current state of these new technologies?
A Facing global rejection by shipowners.
B. Effective yet costly to apply.
C. Causing safety risks for ships.
D. Primarily useful for new ships.
35. What is the author’s overall tone about the future?
A. Cautious but fundamentally optimistic.
B. Pessimistic and overcome with frustration.
C. Neutral and purely informational.
D. Urgent and skeptical of regulatory efforts.
C 33. D 34. B 35. A
根据第一段最后一句“Scientific research consistently demonstrates that ocean noise levels have been increasing by approximately 3.3 decibels per decade, directly corresponding with the expansion of global maritime traffic. (科学研究一致表明,海洋噪音水平每十年增加约3.3分贝,这与全球海上交通的扩张直接相关。)”可知,海洋噪音污染与全球海上交通的扩张直接相关。再根据第二段第一句“The most significant sound disturbance originates from propeller cavitation (螺旋桨空化) — a complex process where ship propellers spin so fast that they create tiny bubbles. (最严重的声音干扰源于螺旋桨空化——这是一个复杂的过程,船用螺旋桨旋转得很快,会产生微小的气泡。)”可知,这种声音干扰的主要来源是船舶螺旋桨。根据这两处信息,水下噪音污染的主要原因是船舶螺旋桨产生的噪音。故选C项。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段最后两句“Simultaneously, researchers at the Dutch institute MARIN have perfected bubble curtain technology — systems that generate streams of air bubbles around propellers and ship bodies to soften bubble collapse and absorb sound waves. Test results demonstrate substantial noise reduction across frequencies particularly important to marine mammals. (同时,荷兰MARIN研究所的研究人员完善了气泡帘技术——这种系统在螺旋桨和船体周围产生气泡流,以减缓气泡破裂并吸收声波。测试结果表明,在对海洋哺乳动物特别重要的频率范围内,噪音显著降低。)”可知,气泡帘技术的工作原理是通过产生气泡流来吸收声波,从而达到降噪的效果。故选D项。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段前两句“Despite these promising advances, practical implementation faces substantial challenges. Upgrading existing ships requires significant investment, and shipowners need stronger economic and regulatory support. (尽管取得了这些有前景的进展,但实际实施仍面临巨大挑战。升级现有船舶需要大量投资,船东需要更强的经济和监管支持。)”可知,这些新技术有前景,但实际应用面临挑战,主要是需要大量投资,成本高昂。故选B项。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段第一句“Despite these promising advances, practical implementation faces substantial challenges. (尽管取得了这些有前景的进展,但实际实施仍面临巨大挑战。)”可知,作者首先提到实际实施面临巨大挑战,这是谨慎的一面。又根据本段最后两句“Encouragingly, international environmental standards are gradually creating favorable conditions for adopting these technologies. As research refines these solutions, the maritime industry moves closer to achieving sustainable coexistence between global commerce and marine ecosystem preservation. (令人鼓舞的是,国际环境标准正在逐渐为采用这些技术创造有利条件。随着研究不断完善这些解决方案,航运业正朝着实现全球贸易与海洋生态系统保护可持续共存的目标迈进。)”可知,作者对其前景持乐观态度。综合来看,作者既看到了挑战,也看到了希望,态度是“谨慎但根本上乐观的”。故选A项。

Good gift giving is an art. The perfect present can lift a mood or improve a relationship. Gift giving around holidays, birthdays, graduations or weddings is a great opportunity to reinforce those relationships. Whatever the occasion, gift giving is a social practice that requires careful thought and consideration. ____36____ The following tips may help you craft a simple guide to gifting.
____37____ When we receive gifts in a bunch, we tend to unconsciously average out their value, so a small gift attached to a big one will hurt the latter’s impact.
Gift experiences rather than things. A brand-new iPhone becomes old fast. But a dream vacation or seeing our favorite artist in concert will give us memories that last forever. That is why we should consider an experience over a physical object. ____38____
Think like the receiver. ____39____ That might seem obvious, but it happens far less than we’d like. People tend to use gifts as jokes, encouragements to change one’s ways, or to signal something about themselves rather than providing utility or happiness to the receiver.
But if all else fails, remember there’s a reason why we say that it’s the thought that counts. Don’t forget why we are giving gifts. ____40____ Instead, they just want us to think about them, and that can be done in lots of easy ways.
A. Don’t add a small gift to a big gift.
B. So are there a set of rules to follow?
C. Most people don’t want lots of money spent on them.
D. To put it simply, buy things that our receiver would buy for themselves.
E. The value of a gift is often determined by its emotional impact, not its price tag.
F. Experiences often have more thought gone into them, and they create more vivid memories.
G. Money spent on doing provides more enduring happiness than money spent on having.

故填a。
______(emphasize) the global fascination with the 12th century monument作非限制性定语,起补充说明的作用,且“门票售罄”与“凸显全球痴迷”之间是逻辑上的主动关系,要用现在分词形式。
故填to have caused。
故填What。
故填were invested。
stood in the rain outside Notre Dame是关系词引导的定语从句修饰表示many,many在此指代许多人,关系词在该从句中作主语,关系代词who或that符合要求。故填who/that。

Chocolates, lollipops, and toys were the items picked by Babloo while his Mom was busy selecting the provisions (供给) for the month from a departmental store. They both completed their selection of items and entered the billing counter. Seetha was surprised to see the bill which amounted to Rs.1000, which was more than the budget that she had. She wanted to return some of the items picked up by Babloo, but she did not want to disappoint her only son.
That evening, Ramesh dragged himself through the door, looking extremely tired. Seetha asked, “How was your day today?” Ramesh said with a dull face, “It was very tough... I must be very aggressive to save my job. We need to save at least a little more amount per month, Seetha”. “So, what was the bill amount for this month?” asked Ramesh with curiosity. When Seetha quietly mentioned the grocery bill in the kitchen, he murmured, “Every child deserves these small joys”, forcing a smile.
However, Babloo overheard his parents’ conversation. Peeking (偷瞥) through the doorway, Babloo saw his father sitting at the table, head in hands — a sight that sent a sharp pang (痛苦) through the boy’s heart. The next morning, he noticed the deep worry lines on his father’s face that even a forced smile couldn’t conceal (掩藏).
In the following weeks, a quiet determination settled over Babloo. He began spending evenings writing something, with his English dictionary constantly at his side. When his mother urged him to sleep, he’d simply say, “It’s for a school assignment,” though his eyes held a secret. Ramesh, noticing the light under his son’s door late at night, felt a mixture of pride and concern, unaware that his son’s efforts were all for him.
One evening, Babloo rushed to meet his father, face glowing with triumph. “Papa, this is for you!” he exclaimed, holding out a Rs.8000 note. Ramesh’s face darkened instantly. “Where did you get this? Did you steal it?” he demanded, his voice sharp with fear. Babloo’s radiant smile soon vanished, tears springing to his eyes as he looked at the father.
注意:
(1)续写词数应在150左右;

Paragraph 2: Then, Babloo proposed, “We can use it to buy the provisions.”
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Seetha immediately stepped between them, asking Babloo softly, “Tell us, dear.” “It’s my prize,” Babloo said as he pulled the award certificate and his winning essay from his schoolbag. Wiping away his tears, he began explaining in a trembling voice how he had noticed his dad’s weariness and mom’s worried looks over their financial struggles. He recalled the moment he decided to enter the essay competition, murmuring, “I thought if I won, I could help.” As Ramesh’s rough fingers gently traced the words on the certificate, his initial anger melted away, replaced by a surge of affection mixed with self-reproach.
Then, Babloo proposed, “We can use it to buy the provisions.” Seetha and Ramesh exchanged a deeply touched glance, seeing the pure love behind their son’s gesture. They embraced him tightly, their voices thick with emotion. After a thoughtful discussion, Ramesh suggested, “Let’s set aside most of it for your education.” But seeing the earnest look in Babloo’s eyes, he added, “We can use a small portion to ease our situation right now.” A genuine smile finally returned to Babloo’s face, brighter than any they had seen in months. The money would provide temporary relief, but they all understood that the real treasure lay in the strengthened bonds of their family and their newfound mutual understanding.

“The whole thing it was just magical,” joyful Branson said on his return aboard the space plane.
24. What’s the main idea of paragraph 3?
A. The plane’s flight height.
B. The smooth launching process.
C. The record-breaking speed of the flight.

A. It just took fifteen minutes.
B. There is much room for improvement.
C. It was a successful promotion for space tourism.
D. It was a private flight intended for billionaire.
27. Where is the passage probably from?
A. A travel brochure. B. A science report.
C. A textbook. D. A newspaper.

B. It hides work’s built-in injustice.
32 What is the main cause of underwater noise pollution?
A. Facing global rejection by shipowners.
