As a six-year-old Canadian schoolboy,Ryan had trouble believing the words spoken
by his teacher that many people in developing African countries couldn't get enough clean
water. He looked across the classroom at the drinking fountain. It was very close--only ten
steps away. So,Ryan asked himself,"Why do some African children have to walk ten
kilometres to get water every day?And why is the water so dirty that it makes them sick?"
Young Ryan thought,"Life iseasy for me;but hard for those people. Why don't I help?
At first, his plan was to earn money to build a single well somewhere in Africa. He
cleaned windows and did gardening for his family and neighbours. He soon reached his first
target of $70,but when he gave the money to a charity,he was told that it actually cost
$2,000 to build a well.Two thousand dollars was a lot of money,but Ryan didn't give up.He
was determined to help other children have clean water. He started to ask for help from his
classmates and neighbours and persuaded them to donate money. At the same time,a friend
of Ryan's mother helped make his story go public.After-several months,Ryan had raised the
$2,000,with which a well was built near a primary school in Uganda. The children at the
school no longer needed to walk for hours to get water. They were grateful to him and
invited him to visit.
In Uganda,Ryan at last saw the finished well with his own eyes. But that was not all.
He also saw hundreds of delighted students who had turned out to welcome him. They sang
and danced happily. Some even offered him food and gifts. At first Ryan was nervous, but
soon a great warmth filled him.He really had made a difference for these children. He broke
into a joyful smile.
Later,Ryan's experience led him to set up a foundation to encourage more people to
help. Many inspired people gave him their support.Ryan's foundation continues to attract
support from more and more people,so the work of building more wells can go on.Today,
over 800,000 people in 16 countries across Africa have benefited from the life-changing gift
of clean,safe water.
Now,as an adult,Ryan says that the question to ask is not "Why don't I help?",but
"How can I help today?".This msight grew from the determined attitude of a six-year-old
boy who had the courage and perseverance to make his dream a reality.

Like most other parrots, parakeets(长尾小鹦鹉)are known to have the ability to copy
human speech. Now a new study has found that when parakeets make sounds, their brains
work similarly to the way human brains function when we speak.
The study was led by Michael Long,a professor at New York University.Long's team
focused on common parakeets, also known as budgerigars or budgies. They placed tiny
probes (into the brains of four birds to keep track of their brain activity as they made
sounds, focusing on a part of the brain called the anterior arcopallium (AAC),which is
known to affect vocal muscles, which are muscles related to voice.
They found that certain brain cells (became active when the birds made specific
sounds. Some cells seemed to be involved in producing consonants, and others created
vowels. Some showed activity when the birds made high sounds, while other cells lit up for
low sounds. This simple system allows parakeets to combine different sounds to make
complex calls.Long described it as a"beautiful solution"for sound production.
In human brains, specific brain cell activity is connected with certain movements of the
lips or tongue. This is the first time scientists have identified a similar language"map"in the
brain of a nonhuman animal. The researchers think it's possible that other parrots also have a
similar set up in their brains.
Long's team also studied zebra finches.Compared to parakeets, the finches'brains have
complex systems. But these can make only simple songs and cannot copy human speech.
Researching how language works in bird brains could help scientists better understand
how it works in the human brain. This could lead to solutions for speech injuries in humans.
Long said that discovering insights from animals is "an important way to develop new
treatments for speech disorders."
28.What is the function of tiny probes?
A.To record parakeets'brain response.B.To study the structure ofAAC.
C.To help parakeets make sounds.
D.To change parakeets'muscular system.
29.What can we know about parakeets'brain cells?
A.They work in a puzzling way.
B.They fail to mix different sounds.
C.They only process high sounds.D.They react to sounds differently.
30.Which is the new finding about parakeets?
A.Ability to sing beautiful songs.B.Talent for copying human speech.
C.Speech-linked brain activity.
D.Higher intelligence than zebra finches.
31.Which aspect of the study does the last paragraph mainly focus on?
A.The method.
B.The process.
C.The significance.D.The future.

2024 marks an exciting year for space exploration, with NASA's Europa Clipper
mission leading the way. This spacecraft, launched in October 2024,is set to completely
change our understanding of Jupiter's moon Europa-one of the most promising places to
search for alien life in our solar system.
Europa, covered in a thick layer of ice,is believed to hide a vast subsurface ocean(a
liquid water layer beneath its icy surface)larger than Earth's oceans combined.Scientists
think this ocean could have the right conditions for life:water, energy (from tidal forces),
and maybe even organic molecules (the building blocks of life).
The Europa Clipper carries advanced tools to study Europa's ice and ocean. One key
instrument is a radar that can"see"through the ice, mapping the thickness of the frozen layer
and detecting cracks where water might erupt onto the surface.Another tool will analyze
gases and particles released during these"cryovolcanic"eruptions(eruptions of water, not
lava)to check for organic compounds.Early data from the mission already suggests that
Europa's ice may have"chaos regions"-areas where the ice is cracked and mixed with
liquid water-making it easier for organic materials to rise to the surface.
While no direct evidence of life has been found yet,the Europa Clipper is laying the
groundwork for future missions. If organic molecules are confirmed,it could mean Europa's
ocean is a habitable world-even if we don't find actual life there,it would be a major step
toward answering the question:"Are we alone in the universe?"
3
32.What is the main goal of NASA's-Europa Clipper mission?
A.To land humans on Jupiter.
B.To collect samples of Jupiter's atmosphere.
C.To study Europa's icy surface and search for signs of habitability.
D To map the orbits of all Jupiter's moons.
33.What does the underlined word "subsurface"in para.2 probably mean?
A.Above ground
B.Under the ice
C.In the atmosphere
D.Between planets
34.What is the passage mainly about
A.The history of Jupiter exploration.
B New discoveries about Europa's surface from the Europa Clipper.
C.How to build a spacecraft for deep space missions.
D.Why Mars is no longer a focus of space research.
35.What's the author's attitude towards the Europa Clipper mission
A.Positive
B.Doubtful
