If it seems like all your friends have smartphones, you may get into it. A new report by Common Sense Media found that by the age of 11, more than half of kids in the US have their own smartphones. By age 12, more than two-thirds do, and by 14, teens are just as likely as adults to own a smartphone. Some kids start much younger. Nearly 20% of 8-year-olds have their own smartphones!
So, what’s the right age for you? Well, I study the effects of media and technology on kids, and I’m here to say that there is no single right answer to this question. The best way to call the shots is this: When both you and your parents feel the time is right.
Here are some points to consider to help you and your parents make this decision:
Keep Safe
Do you travel to or from school without an adult? This is when phones often go from a “want” to a “need”. Sometimes parents report that they feel better knowing they can reach their children directly, and that their kids can reach them, too.
Be Careful
Do you treat your friends with kindness and respect? Do you know the fact that once something goes out onto the Internet, it can never truly be deleted (删除)?
When you have a smartphone, your parents are the most important influence in your life. If parents use their phones all day, guess what? Their children probably will be like that, too. However, if parents have smartphone habits like putting the phone away during meals, that will go a long way in helping kids develop the same habits.
24.How does the writer begin the passage?
A.By giving a report result.
B.By raising some questions.
C.By providing some reasons.
25.What does the underlined phrase (短语) “call the shots” mean in Paragraph 2?
A.提问题 B.查信息 C.做决定
26.A phone goes from a “want” to a “need” when children use it to ________.
A.talk with their friends
B.get in touch with their parents
C.have a break from schoolwork
27.What is the best title of the passage?
A.You Need A Phone! B.When To Get Phones? C.No Phones For Kids!

Like many other foreigners, Rosalind Oliver’s first touch of Chinese Tai Chi came from popular kung fu movies. However, she has become a Tai Chi master herself, teaching it to both Chinese and foreigners.
Oliver’s journey with Tai Chi began in her early 20s, when her backache was always troubling her and she was turning to an exercise. Then she discovered advertisement classes about Tai Chi by accident and decided to try the “mysterious” eastern sport. Right away Oliver fell in love with the beautiful movement of Tai Chi, and she found that her back pains disappeared after years of practice.
Oliver later met her late husband, who was also her Tai Chi teacher. In the early 1990s, the couple opened their own Tai Chi school in the UK. To further understand Tai Chi, they decided to start a journey to China. However, three years after moving to Shanghai in 2000, her husband died, leaving her alone to work on Tai Chi.
The 58-year-old British woman recalled that it was a hard time for her. However, her Chinese friends in Shanghai supported her though the painful process. “They didn’t treat me like a foreigner, but rather like a friend.” Oliver said.
In 2005, Oliver set up the Double Dragon Alliance Cultural Center, which acts as a bridge for foreign people to get a better understanding of Chinese culture such as traditional Chinese medicine and Peking Opera.
Besides her Tai Chi classes, Oliver now teaches English at Shanghai University. She not only showed her deep love for Chinese culture, but also hoped to work in China forever.
56.When did Oliver’s journey with Tai Chi begin?
57.Where did Oliver’s couple open their own Tai Chi school?
58.Who supported Oliver through her hard time?
59.What do you think of Oliver?
