Is there any truth behind the saying “You are what you eat”? We put this to the test by asking four people to open their fridge doors and talk about their lifestyles.
Ellie 24 Junior doctor
There’s not enough room in my small apartment, so I don’t cook very often. My fridge is usually half empty and I’m often too tired to eat much anyway. I often end up saving part of my meal for the next day. Some evenings, I’ll just have something quick, like toast. As a doctor, I know I had better change the way I eat, but I just don’t have the time or energy right now.
Jenny 31 Teacher
My husband and I avoid all products that come from animals. We like cooking at home and make our meals from fresh, seasonal fruit and vegetables. Cooking together gives us a chance to relax and communicate. If we have children, I want to bring them up just like us, but my husband says that everyone should be able to make their own lifestyle choices.
Ted 35 Construction (建筑) worker
Each day at the construction site is more or less the same-tiring! When I get back home, there’s nothing more satisfying than a big meat dinner. I guess I’ve always been a big meat eater and in this house, no family meal is complete without some form of meat. I still don’t think that anything can beat my mum’s homemade sausages.
Mike 49 Chef
With five children, we’re one big family! My wife and I both work full-time, so life can get pretty busy! Like a lot of chefs I know, I don’t really do much cooking at home. Sometimes I bring home food from the restaurant where I work. Once a week, we do a big shop and buy a lot of frozen food. C
An unpleasant smell came into my nose as the bowl of fried stinky tofu (臭豆腐) was placed on my grandmother’s dinner table. I sat back and pushed the dish away. “It’s supposed to stink. Just give it a try!” my grandmother said.
Holding my breath, I unwillingly took a bite. To my surprise, the tofu beneath the fried skin was warm and soft. From then on, whenever I visited my grandmother, I would rush to the kitchen for the stinky tofu. It became my favourite dish.
I would also meet my Uncle Chan on every visit. As a young boy, I never understood his Down syndrome (唐氏综合征). He was an unfriendly and terrible creature in my eyes. He walked around the house, talking to himself. Whenever I saw him, I would run away in fear.
However, one day, my view of my uncle suddenly changed. I was getting out of bed when I heard soft steps approaching (走近). He slowly sat next to me and touched my face gently, as a mother would stroke (抚摸) a baby. I could not help but smile, and my fear disappeared. For the first time, I could see softness and warmth in his eyes.
My uncle is like stinky tofu. Stinky tofu smells unpleasant on the outside, yet feels warm and soft inside. Like stinky tofu, my uncle’s Down syndrome made me keep my distance at first. Yet I learned that deep inside, he is harmless and has a loving nature.
Some people look down upon disabled people. As I was able to see through the outer surface of the tofu, these people are unable to see through the surface of prejudice (偏见). They judge the disabled with one glance (一瞥).
The outside and inside of stinky tofu are two extremely different worlds. Stinky tofu offers an important lesson: never judge people at first glance, for true beauty comes from the inside.
36. Why did stinky tofu become the author’s favourite dish?
A. It was a family tradition. B. It turned out to be quite delicious.
C. Grandma encouraged him to try it. D. His taste for food increased.
37. What did the author think of his uncle at first?

A. You are what you eat. B. A person’s taste changes over time.

Each day at the construction site is more or less the same-tiring! When I get back home, there’s nothing more satisfying than a big meat dinner.
