After a decade-long revision,the third edition of The English-Chinese
外刊精
Dictionary has returned on May 8-bigger,sharper,and more attuned to the rhythms
of modern language.
With 250,000 entries, the new edition incorporates updates that affect around 30 per cent of its
content. The dictionary holds the distinction of being China's first large-scale,independently
compiled bilingual reference book.It is also the official dictionary for translators working for the
United Nations.Throughout its publication history, the dictionary has played an essential role in
facilitating English education among Chinese speakers, and is widely used by students and
professionals alike, according to Zhu Jisong,editor-in-chief of the third edition.
Zhu inherited the task from his mentor and predecessor."I had a somewhat ambitious plan for
the third edition,"Zhu says."I wanted to highlight the creativity and productivity of modern
English since the 15th century....I believe a more sophisticated understanding of English can help
China expand its knowledge of the world."Apart from the routine tasks of any large-scale
lexicographical update,Zhu and the editing team set out to enrich the dictionary with illustrative
examples drawn from diverse and contemporary sources. This shift,Zhu explains, better captures
the dynamic,ever-evolving character of English.
However, few teams for professional research and the compilation of dictionaries remain
today.To overcome this,they launched a new Readers'Integration Project,recruiting volunteers
from all walks of life to contribute new words, phrases and uses of English-Chinese translation in
their specific professional field, academic background and reading experience. These citizen
lexicographers submitted new words, translation examples, and even flagged outdated definitions
or blind spots in previous versions.
"The dictionary serves as a reflection of China's global prominent and constructive role,"Zhu says.

As a geographer,I wanted to offer a summer study abroad programme on sustainability.
However,it wouldn't make sense to design a sustainability programme that includes flying due to
planes'excessive carbon footprint.Alternatively,Amtrak's trains generate 40%less CO2 per
person compared to flying.
Combining my love of Amtrak with a desire to get students out of the classroom,we found
ourselves riding across the country to learn about sustainable tourism, landscapes and urban and
regional planning.
Destinations serve as living laboratories for our students.Classes in some cities, such as
Galesburg,Illinois,or Sacramento,California, focus more heavily on exploring the cities'
industrial histories. In cities such as Portland,Oregon,or Glenwood Springs,Colorado, which
experience large flows of visitors every year,we focus more on tourism and planning.
While staying in Glenwood Springs, students complete an assignment about "destination
tourism"-when tourism becomes the primary driver or economic base of a region.Students ride
the bus "up valley"to Aspen. On the bus, they come to understand what they've read in The
Slums of Aspen,a book about how the ski town passed a resolution that pushed out their
immigrant(移民)workers, who live farther and farther“down valley'”but still work in Aspen.
Once students arrive in Aspen-during the off-season(),they find a polished empty town full
of high-end fashion stores. After returning to Glenwood Springs, they reflect on the differences
between the cities in terms of housing costs, sustainability and tourism labour.
After finishing this course, the students have a better understanding of how and why they can
use public transportation in their daily lives. They also have a greater understanding of the positive
and negative impacts of tourism on a place.Ultimately, they learn how they,as travellers and
community members, can contribute to a more sustainable and equitable future.
