The History of Basketball
Adapted from History.com "Basketball History"
Do you love playing basketball? Millions of people around the world play this sport. But do you know how it started?
Basketball was invented in 1891 by a Canadian teacher named James Naismith. He worked at a school in Massachusetts, USA. The winters were very cold, and his students couldn't play outside. They needed a sport they could play indoors.
Naismith had 18 students in his class. He wanted a game that wasn't too rough. He took a soccer ball and two peach baskets. He put the baskets on the walls. The idea was simple: throw the ball into the basket.
At first, there were 13 rules. Players couldn't run with the ball. They had to pass it. If someone broke the rules, the other team got the ball. The first game ended with a score of 1-0!
Soon, the game became popular. People changed the peach baskets to metal hoops with nets. They also opened the bottom of the nets so the ball could fall through. By 1936, basketball became an Olympic sport.
Today, basketball is one of the most popular sports in the world. Stars like Michael Jordan and LeBron James have inspired millions to play. And it all started with two peach baskets and a soccer ball!
