A
Floods often happen after or during heavy rain. Too much
water can cause damage(损坏) to homes and roads and can even
wash cars away. More importantly, floods can be very dangerous to people’s lives as well.

If a flood happens suddenly without getting prepared, people may have no way to run. The weather report helps people prepare for heavy rain and floods. People try to protect their things by putting sandbags(沙袋) in front of their doors to stop water from coming into their homes. Floods are more likely to go to lower places, so people living in lower areas or near rivers are more likely to be in danger. If heavy rain is reported early, these areas will be saved before the floods arrive.

Floods can happen quickly in many parts of the world. We
need to prepare earlier and act quickly before they begin. So how
can we deal with floods? First, stay away from water. Then,
get to higher ground during the floods. Finally, go back home
carefully. There could be something dangerous in the dirty water
that has washed into your home. Clean your home as soon as
possible after the flood is gone.

As soon as morning came, rescue workers began digging for people alive. They used hand tools because they were worried that machines might hurt anyone trapped under the rocks. Rain and snow kept falling and there was a danger that more rocks would come down the mountain.
For two days, rescue workers never stopped digging. On
Thursday evening, they found the first body. The next day they
found three more. They had almost given up hope. But on Saturday morning, a special machine found a small movement. A fireman shouted down, “Can anyone hear me?” “I can hear you,” came the reply.

Immediately, rescue workers began carefully taking away
the rocks. At the same time, two workers talked to the man. They found out that his name was Stuart Diver and his wife was already dead. He was cold and hungry and had almost given up any hope of being saved.
Finally, after 12 hours’ hard work, Stuart was pulled out.
Rescue workers all over the hillside began shouting with joy. In
thousands of homes, people were also cheering as they watched
the rescue on their televisions.
